Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Salsa bar ROCKS! and the kids meals are fairly priced I had the chicken taco which was very good

I don't understand how this place has less than 4 stars, maybe people on this side of town are more spoiled and pompous than those that visit the other locations, I don't know. What I do know, is that for Mexican food in Tucson, Taco Tote stands above the rest. People complaining about the meat having too much grizzle must have never eaten at Tucson's over-hyped restaurants where the meats are more close to rubber than meat. The salsa bar - Amazing. Free chips and unlimited salsas? Sign me up! Tacos - Anybody reviewing and complaining about there being nothing on the tacos here...you're stupid. The salsa/condiment bar is there for you to use, not just to look pretty. Service - Always great. Staff seems to actually enjoy their jobs and I can't say I've ever had even one bad experience with staff over the years. The real star of this place is the Family Platters. $18 gets you: 2 drinks Tortillas Rice Beans Mountain of your choice of meat. We typically share this between three adults, so that should tell you something about the amount of food. If you go between 3-7pm, they have their "Panchos", which is their version of Super Nachos for 1/2 price (2.99) and I think it's also 1/2 price beers.

It makes me sad seeing all these good reviews cause this is not Mexican food. Taco Bell is better Mexican food than this. And for what they are serving it is way over priced. Definitely never going back and not recommending it.
(1)Ray T.
Really superb food All prepared fresh right in front of you Ample portions and good value We did takeout as otherwise the place is a fast food environment
(5)Ron R.
I absolutely love their biztek brocheta! Their salad and salsa bar is super yummy! One thing they do need help in is their margaritas. I've had way better at places that are a hop and skip from this location. I'll be back.
(4)Chris B.
cheap, great salsa bar, good adobado. Tacos here are the good street tacos with corn tortillas, they have all the regular fixins: cilantro and onion, salsa rojo/verde, grilled onion, peppers, cabbage I always get the Quatro Taco special Nothing special to sit down at, but again, but for the price and service its a great for mexican food for the location it is in Tucson.
(4)Giovanni R.
I'm from Mexico, so i've been eating tacos my whole life, I've tried tacos all over tucson, and taco tote has the best tacos in town, Great salsas ,great tortillas, great meats, gracias taco tote for bringing great tacos like we say in Mexico "tacos ricos". Can't wait you open a location by Oro Valley.
(5)Esmat E.
The food isn't anything exceptional bit the service was spot on and Adrian the bartender was very cool.
(3)A F.
I come here when I'm craving tacos, and they're delicious. The salsa bar is superb! However I would only order to sit down here. Last time I came here I ordered the pork acabado tacos to go, had a long drive to where I was headed, And by the time I got home my tortillas were soaked in grease. Ask them to keep the tortillas separate if you order to go. Regardless they're delicious every time!
(4)Bill A.
Great for Take out! Food was still hot! Great tasting! Love the spices and salsas!
(5)Alicia A.
Tacos barbacoa and carne asada was delicious my husband tried the shrimp tacos and he loved them. The tortillas tasted like they were homemade. The rice needs to be improve but other than that place was nice and clean.
(4)Colleen M.
My boyfriend and I just went here today. We were hungry, tired, and hungover. But their flavor packed meats and salsas was not lost on us. We each got a combo with rice and refried beans. I got barbacoa and he got the pork whatchamacallit. Sorry, I did say I was hungover and tired, right? Anyhow. We got 2 tacos in the combo so we traded and got to try each others. Very juicy and succulent. Their salsa bar is fresh, clean and has a ton of variety! Speaking of clean, the restaurant was well manicured, and the bathrooms spotless (tho missing TP in 2 stalls). You know what they say about restaurant bathrooms... If the bathrooms are nasty, just imagine their kitchen! Taco tote passed with flying colors. This place is right down the road from us, and we couldn't be happier!
(5)Bunk M.
Not the cleanest place you'll ever go that's for sure. Customer service is TERRIBLE. The food is hit and miss. The salsa and chips are consistently great though.
(2)David W.
FREE CHIPS AND SALSA! This place has a huge salsa bar . The tacos are a pretty good size and they are super tasty! The service is friendly and fast. I would recommend checking this place out if your in the mood for Mexican food.
(4)Adam F.
Like the other El Taco Tote in town, they have managed to stay in a location that traditionally has high turnover rate for restaurants. This location is a bit more modern looking than the other one, has more seating, and includes a bar. The salsa bar is the best feature of El Taco Tote as it has one of the better guacamole salsas I've ever tasted. They give you generous portions including the sides. Taste wise, the chicken is a little too dry so I usually end up drenching my tacos with one of the salsas. There is nothing exceptional about the service but nothing bad to say about it either. If you are looking for a different style of Mexican food, then this could be a destination to try. It is not that expensive so if you don't like, it's "no harm, no foul." You can read through these other reviews and find a whole range of opinions about this place. That leaves it up to you to figure out if it's worth it!
(4)Chrissy M.
We went last night. This place is a mess so disorganized. Food took forever and was received cold. Would not go back. I couldn't eat the food.
(1)Lisa C.
I was pleasantly surprised. Great salsa bar, tacos had a lot of meat, everything tasted great. Will definitely go back.
(4)Sylvia M.
I could not be happier I found this place. When we first walked in, we were a little confused and uncomfortable but boy are we glad we stayed. The food was cheap and delicious. The drinks were cheap and good. We can't wait to go back to have another helping of machows and enchiladas
(5)Karin K.
Eh. Came for lunch and it was ok. The moving menu is absolutely annoying but they have printed ones at the register. I'm glad I accidentally came in on a day that was "happy hour" (Sundays maybe?) because the nachos were only ok. And I asked for the jalapeños on the side. I got a little to go cup with 3 slices. 3.
(2)Vanessa J.
I went there because it had good reviews and it was ok. It's not a traditional sit down restaurant. You order and bring your food to the table. It was a little more expensive than I would have liked but you get a lot of food. The margaritas were the best part. Go during happy hour and they are super cheap.
(4)David M.
Very solid tacos and a great salsa bar. love the barbacoa and carnitas. quick service, and they serve beer too. It's like a great taco truck inside a comfortable restaurant.
(5)Jamie M.
So empty and quiet! There were a ton of employees hanging out at the front and absolutely no customers. I felt weird walking in. We went up to order and I got the shrimp quesadilla and the sirloin taco. Both were good. The sirloin taco was just the meat and you go to the taco bar and add everything else. The shrimp quesadilla was shrimp, cheese and salsa. My boyfriend was very excited about the 100+ flavors coke machine. It would have been great except the MAJORITY of the flavors were EMPTY. Seriously? There were also about a million flies circling our table. So disgusting. I hate flies. Especially around my food. I really wanted to like it, but I doubt we will ever come back. Eat at La Salsa instead!

We aren't from Tucson, so this was a nice place to try to taste the local fast food. We got different tacos, shrimp, chicken, beef. All were good and made better by the salsa bar. That was fun. The corn taco was not to my liking, but I ate the rice that comes with the meals and that was more than good enough. I don't know if I'd come back in a regular basis if I lived here, but I certainly enjoyed our one trip and will remember it as part of our memorable Tucson trip.
(4)Rocky C.
I love this place the food is good they have a very nice salsa bar and they have the best charro (borracho) breans anywhere the only this is it is a very limited menu and the tortillas were very grease but all in all in has become one of our fav places.
(4)Andrea G.
Gary and I have driven by this place many times. We finally had to try it -- and we're delighted with the findings! It's a self-serve place. We found it very clean and fun, with happy Mexican music playing like a fiesta in progress. We ordered a platter for two (why not go all the way, right? We were hungry!), which came with soda. Being adventurous, we tried chicken and a Barbacoa (a beef item). The platter came with four sides, on top of having the run of this large, delicious salsa/fresh veggies bar. We ordered refried beans (2), charro beans and rice. It came with guacamole and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. The food was really good and plentiful! We made fajita-like meals in our fresh and hot corn tortillas, topping it off with all the goodies in the salsa/vegetable bar. I really enjoyed that bar, taking chopped cabbage, cucumbers, pickled onions, cilantro, a taste of Gary's pepper (looked hotter than it was, thank goodness!), and a variety of salsas. I found the pico de gallo delicious but the medium was a little too hot for me. They had two mild salsas that really were. Some veteran customer of this place mixed the avocado-based salsa with the tomato-based salsa. That worked well for me, too. Of course, my husband was devouring all of the salsas very happily, with his tolerance for all heat levels (show-off!!). :-) We also enjoyed the chips as a snack. The beef Barbacoa was FANTASTIC and I am not a big beef fan normally. They cook it shredded and with caramelized onions, which also were found under the chicken. We ate very happily. EVERYTHING was perfect. And, yes, they have one of the modern soda machines that allows sodas and mixtures of all types. I had a vanilla diet Barq's root beer (Yum!). I'm not a big soda drinker, but root beer, and a vanilla one? Oh yes! We left El Taco Tote very satisfied and ready to go back very soon. Am I sorry I didn't try this sooner! Do give 'em a try. I think you'll also agree they are worthy of your attention and dollars.

Yum! I've been wanting to try this place for awhile but never made it in. You order what you're going to eat (and they have a good variety) then you doctor it up with whatever you like on it from the bar. I had a shrimp taco my first visit, which was loaded with shrimp, really nice sized shrimp that seemed to have been grilled. The last couple times I went with the shrimp burrito which I love. Very nice sized, tasty and filling. Their chips & salsa are really good. You help yourself to those and don't have to wait on a server. Same with the drinks, they have the new machines that has just about everything known to mankind. The prices were low and the food was fresh and good, restaurant was clean and stocked. One of my new favorite places to grab a fast meal.
(4)Michael S.
I have ate at this El Taco Tote twice. The food Is just okay, they need to cut the fat off the meat before they cook it, the fish tacos are over cooked but generous portions. I like the pineapple they put on the al pastor. I did get a family meal to take home, don't bother, it said for 4 maybe 2 if you are lucky. 6 tortillas a little beans and rice and enough meat for 4 tacos if you are lucky. They forgot my pineapple. We called and asked if that was all we were supposed to get and the Manager said yes. Wow eat there you get way more. On my first visit I was confused the menu board is digital and changes very fast, I bought a couple tacos and after doing so I realized that a combo meal was cheaper. I think the staff could be a little bit more helpful explaining the menu and the sizes of items when you order..
(2)Myriam H.
I'm Sonoran and used to eating the BEST food in Hermosillo. This is not as good, but close as it gets in Tucson aside from Guero or Nenes. But this is MUCH better quality and ambience than the places mentioned. Meats are good quality and seasoned perfectly then grilled over an open flame. Tortillas made there. And the salsas are 100% authentic, exactly how my peoples make them. So if you didn't like it here, you probably had a bad day or don't like authentic northern México tacos. So I suggest you march your butt to Taco Bell and order an Enchirito with extra cheddar cheese and "fire" packets of sauce. As far as the review from the Chicago person? Get outta here!
(5)Linda C.
I used to rave about this place when they first opened. Now I can barely tolerate the name popping up during dinner or lunch suggestions. Somewhere, somehow, they've gone downhill. Their salsas are still great, but their tacos just aren't as splendid as they once were.
(3)Gilbert T.
Holy bonkers Batman, these are some awesome tacos. I love the salsa bar along with the chips. The food for two meal is perfect for me and my wife as it's cheap and delicious. Probably the best carne asada tacos in Tucson!
(5)Adrian G.
So it's been awhile since I've been here. One the serving sizes for the rice and beans are smaller. The meat was cold when served. What's going on here?!
(3)Amanda B.
Had a shrimp and a fish taco. Both were good, not the best I have had, but solid. They were on happy hour at 7 on a Friday, so I was pumped. But you can only get bottles at the register. If you want a draft you have to order separate at the bar. Great salsa bar and very cool coke machine. Definitely a deal to hit up for an easy happy hour.
(4)Susanne M.
Excellent. Two happy kids, two happy adults. Great beans, tacos, salsa bar. Don't eat any Mexican food less than four stars in Tucson. This is tucson after all v
(4)Kristy N.
We had a great meal here and will definitely be back! The salsa bar is awesome!
(4)Christian N.
We had no idea this place was so good!!! Great service. Better food, if possible! This spur of the moment pick made our day!
(5)M V.
Really good tacos like my grandma used to make! My faves are the Pirata and Pork Adobado. Fresh hand made tortillas and chips, with about the best salsa bar I've been to. My friends and I have been going there during the weeknight, and after the gym to chow down and have a few brews. They have a pretty decent selection of draft beer, and they are reasonably priced. This about the only place that I feel comfortable going and having a few beers in my gym clothes!! LOVE LOVE LOVe this place!!
(4)Eleana H.
Yay I live right across from this place, and I was pretty excited when they opened. I stopped by yesterday night for dinner and they had a pretty good beer selection at the bar w/ other various types of hard alcohol. I got a fish taco which was actually served up in a good sized portion. Fish was nice and deep fried.. just the way I like it. My boyfriend got the steak burrito.. he rated it a 7.5, because he said he has had better.... Salsa bar was nice and clean, as well as well stocked which was awesome for me! All in all this place was pretty good. I think we will have to go back and try the 1 lb meat plates... and then re evaluate this place again.
(4)Mandy C.
Tasty!!! It's not the gourmet high end places like you have downtown, but it is a very tasty family friendly place. The sirloin was really good and they have a salsa bar with yummy guacamole salsa and more with various levels of heat. Their menu has single tacos, meat by the 1/2 or full pound, and family style plating. The location on Stone has a bar, the other does not. For what you pay, it's worth the trip. It's a tasty quick taco meal.
(4)James S.
Came in late on a Wednesday after work, looking for cheap and fast eats. Frankly, we were kinda skeptical about this place. However, service was fast and friendly; the place was immaculate, and the salsa bar was good, too. Food was way better than we expected... There was a lot of meat! We'll roll through here again sooner or later.
(4)Melissa J.
Agh I love this spot too much. I'd been to the one on the east side a lot so I was excited when they opened this one. Inside is really nicer than the east side one. I love the chicken adobado tacos. Awesome spicy flavor. The salsa bar is great. So many delicious choices and it's always clean. They also have an awesome soda machine with crazy sodas you don't normally see. Pibb Zero? I didn't even know that existed! I need to be careful because this place is way too good.
(5)Kimmy F.
Great food! We shared some tacos and the chips were amazing! Good beans! Good carne and chicken!
(4)Montgomery B.
I was not impressed. Several salsas and unbelievably didn't care for any of them. The tacos were so bland for being their specialty. Meat was basically flavorless as well as the beans and rice. Place was clean but food was not memorable at all. Wouldn't go again.
(2)T W.
With the rating here I was expecting good things. Well, it's "meh". I was unimpressed when we walked in, but was hopeful. Had a hungry crew in tow and nobody wanted to go looking for someplace else. So we ordered. They at least bring it to the table instead of calling your number. The flavor was fine. Not really bad, but not really special either. I will say they are better than Taco Bell. That's a very low bar. First visit here, and probably my last. There are too many other places to eat to go for something mediocre. They are like Baja Fresh. Not bad, but not great. Really, I'd go with 2.5 stars if I had the choice. But I just can't go to three.
(2)José C.
First impression: El Taco Tote doesn't drown their tacos in cheese or other gimmicks. If you want a taco canoe floating in a cheese pond, so be it. But I'll be at El Taco Tote enjoying the salsa bar and the minimalism. What ultimately puts El TT in championship contention is the presentation of the food. The tacos come in foil, and when you unwrap that foil all you see is tortilla and meat. Just the way it should be. Let *me* decide on the appropriate amount of onion, salsa, and cilantro to add. Let *me* engage the ritual of folding the tortilla. As far as I'm concerned, TT ranks right up there with Tania's 33--though they each offer a different experience. This is the Taco Tote experience: 2 tacos, rice and beans. The wild card? Taco Tote has apple Fanta (we call it Fanzana). That's right, apple Fanta--it's like apple juice on bubbly steroids. Beat that, er, other taco place! Look, the bottom line is that Taco Tote is about as good as it gets in Tucson. How could I have ever missed TT? All this time! The salsa bar *alone* beats most taquerias.
(5)Sharon H.
We came here for happy hour which is daily from 4-7pm. $1 off draft beers, $3 margaritas which are super sweet. The restaurant has two areas, you have to sit in the bar area to order margaritas or draft beers. The other half has more of a fast-food atmosphere where you order at the counter. I was really dissapointed by my seafood tacos. The shrimp taco was bland, the fish taco was overly salted. Neither tasted fresh and I didn't finish them which is highly unusual for me! My fiancee was pretty satisfied with his al pastor and chicken tacos though. They have a large salsa bar-- we loaded up on the pico del gallo which was great, but the salsas themselves were no better than canned salsa. (For the most amazing salsa bar I've found in Tucson yet, try Calle Tepa) Fast friendly service
(3)Sergio A.
The food here is simply amazing. Fresh tortillas and high quality meat. salsa bar is fully stocked and kept fresh. The bar is stocked with great drinks. My wife and I went and the service was prompt and with a smile. The manager checked in with us to ensure our dining experience was on point. That demonstrated a genuine care for his patrons. I fully endorse this restaurant for the quality and taste of its food and the service received. A must go place!!!!!
(5)Walter B.
The taco place against which all others are measured and found lacking.
(5)Tina H.
I ran in because Big Juan's was CLOSED, and it looks like for good, darn it! Got the combo to go, I unrolled my tacos and there was Nothing on them, just meat in a tortilla. Huh? I won't be doing take out here again.
(2)Karol B.
The salsa's are really good and just like I used to get when I lived in Mazatlan! Yummy! The friends I was with loved their carne asada tacos and we were impressed that the corn tortillas were home made! I ordered the fish taco's and wouldn't order them again. Great lunch place that you can get in and out of quickly!
(4)Sonia R.
Completely agree with Jen W., the salsa bar is phenomenal, beans and rice are spot on. The atmosphere is out of sight and I love the soda machines. The quality of the meat, not so much. The top sirloin I've had there had way too much grizzle. The chicken, was definitely of the frozen variety and the barbacoa was way too greasy. Maybe it's a different style of barbacoa but in the last 40 years of my life I have never had barbacoa drenched in oil. Too bad because their tortillas are dynamite, next time I will stick with the beans, rice, chips & salsa.
(2)Jessei M.
The food is excellent! The corn and flour tortillas are hand made and the everything tastes great. They also have a salsa bar with a good variety of salsas and toppings for your tacos or burritos. Very fairly priced!
(5)Arlene C.
We've been here twice so far and I've got to say I love this place. It is so fresh tasting! I like the salsa/condiment bar. I leave here feeling full but not sick full and I love being able to customize my soft drink. We well be going here again sometime in the future.
(5)Monica M.
I agree with others about the sirloin. Way too much grizzle. The beans, guacamole, rice, and condiment bar were great. Didn't try any of the other meats.
(2)Jen P.
Let's start with yummy corn shell, fun soda machine and nice to have free chips with order! However, the man at the counter who talks to you like you are a moron because you haven't been here before is not helping me want to COME BACK! ;) Food is good (chicken taco was much better than the fish; oily and maybe microwaved) but isn't necessary enough to come back for another round of tacos.
(3)Rory J.
Great tacos, especially the pork. The salsa bar is really the key to this place, as the tacos are simply meat and tortilla. All the salsas I've tried are good. Have gone here with several coworkers and each time we all walk away happy.
(5)Jen W.
I think this is a fantastic restaurant (located in the old Ruby Tuesday near Sam's Club), and you can tell the salsa bar is well-kept. This franchise location is new and is a decent sit-down restaurant where you order food then wait for it while you go to the salsa bar. The free corn chips and everything at the salsa bar is everything that is right with authentic Mexican food. Pico de gallo. Avocado crema. Many kinds of green, red, and chipotle salsas. All the salsas mixed together = amazing. Grilled onions. Pickled onions. Pickled cucumbers. Limes. You can get a platter (two meats and sides - rice, pinto beans, or charro beans) for around $18. You can get individual tacos for around $3.10. They have a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine and even a coffee pot. I give Taco Tote only a 3 because I was not impressed with the chicken (thought the salsas were a 5 star). It tasted almost like the grilled refrigerated chicken strips you find in the deli meat section. I would go back just for the salsa!
