Despite the very good ratings, we were really disappointed with our experience. Right from the start the hostess seemed pretty unorganized. The servers were definitely polite but not very attentive. Very dark dining room, actually difficult to maneuver around, especially with several steps everywhere. Pizza was bad, totally raw on the bottom. Also very expensive prices, won't be returning.

Still the best place for us in Tucson. If you love Italian food and a great atmosphere this is the place. I had the best Lamb chops today.

When we arrived the hostess checked to ensure the kitchen was still open (it was 8:30). She later came by after seating us to tell us they close early depending on the volume, so its probably best to call ahead. I adored the old school decor and our service was great. The portions were generous, you def get what you pay for. My martini was phenomenal and after the antipasto and soup, my date and I both barely touched our meals! I would be sure to recommend or return next time I'm in the Tucson area.

Upon entering hostess was perfection !!! She recognized us ( I think ) got us a table right away. Sooo nice. Our wine selection was awesome, appetizer ( fried ravioli ) was really good! Then our salad came along but with dirty plates ( both mine and my husband's plate were dirty. That was a downer!!!!! The waiter promptly took them away when we pointed it out and brought out another but I was sort of uncomfortable with the hygiene situation and made me think if their kitchen was clean. We did not make a fuss and continued our dinner. Soup was good, not extraordinary but nice. Waiter was very attentive and did keep coming to our table to see if we needed anything. Main entree was the Sister Mary Joseph, three filet medallions which are always so tender!!! A little too much pepper for me, but otherwise great! Really cooked to term medium with the pink center! Tiramisu for dessert!!! Absolutely amazing!!! Had a wonderful evening except for the dirty salad plates. Otherwise perfect!! Ambiance is great and the hostess makes you feel so welcome It really starts of your evening wonderfully!! Kudos to the owners! The place is beautiful!! Please look into the kitchen to see that everything is going as it should! Dirty plates are a true downer to the experience!!! Will return anyway! Love Bazil's!!!

Typical traditional Italian. Slow paced, deliciousness. A dining experience meant to be savored - from the salad and soup to the pollo or lamb or pasta. My six-yr old LOVES the pasta fagioli soup and spaghetti with meatballs. The chicken rollatine is divine. This lovely restaurant continues to be a family favorite!

Came here for my birthday a few weeks ago, had a lovely time! It was kind of late on a Sunday, and there weren't too many other people in there at the time, but both our server and the bartender were very friendly, as was the hostess/manager woman. Our pizza was excellent, as were our appetizers, and our pasta and salad were o.k. We'll be back!

Full disclosure: I've been going to Bazil's for over 20 years and it's my favorite restaurant by far in Tucson. Try anything you want, you'll like it. I've had most things on the menu but I've gravitated towards the cannelloni over the years. I've posted a picture of it. You really can't describe the richness of the sauce that surrounds the cannelloni. Every time I order it, the meal begins with me and everyone else at the table trying a spoonful. They can give you red sauce on the side and you can mix and match, plus great for bread dipping. Most other people I go with try the scallops/seafood pasta and I've never heard anything less than praise. The Sister Mary Joseph is something you'll tell others about. Seriously, just try anything. I've also enclosed a picture of the triple chocolate cake. Each piece weighs over a pound, easily. We split one piece amongst the whole table whether it's 2 people or 6 people and it's more than enough for everyone. It's one of the richest chocolate cakes you'll ever have, anywhere. The dinner starts with fresh salad, soup, and bread. I've never actually finished a meal there yet and I'm a big eater. It's just sensory overload of richness and flavor. It's a great Tucson restaurant because it has a great balance between casual and upscale. You can show up for a romantic date, order expensive wine, and have an incredibly intimate experience. Or wear shorts and sandals and it's just as comfortable. Stop by the bar and watch a game or two. Great crowd and atmosphere and they'll serve you a pizza from Bazils-To-Go if you want one. We often have dinner in the restaurant then order a pizza to take home for the little ones. Check it out if you have the chance. If you like this type of cooking I think you'll put it high on your list.

Great taste but... I had the Veal Scaloppini for $26.95. Opened with a shared salad among friends. Very good dressing. Homemade I would say, you could taste the sugar. Classic. The pasta was cooked perfectly. The problem was the fact it was not strained very well. Spaghetti soup. Way too much water on the bottom of the bowl. I even drained it out on the side plate. The Scaloppini...well the best I have tasted in a long time! Perfect! Just wish it wasn't totally submersed in the liquid that was the sauce. That was a little annoying. As for the service. It was horrible. 10 to 15 minutes to get drinks. There were 3 of us. After waiting nearly 15 minutes, they brought out each drink individually! This continued throughout the evening. The atmosphere is the classic dark. Takes you back. Was nice.

Went here with some friends. Service was bit slow but the place was packed to the gills! Our table had the a steak, spaghetti and meatballs, and eggplant parmigiana. Portions were big and food was well prepared- overall however, I felt it was underseasoned and lacked a wow factor. The antipasto and soup were a nice touch, plus the owners come around to every table to check up. Bazils has a nice homey Italian feel I've yet to experience in Tucson.

Should be called Bazil's attempting Italian. I ordered the cioppino, which was around $40 and listed as the house specialty. When I ordered it, the guy told me it's the best cioppino he has ever had and he's had a lot of cioppino. Well, I've had a lot of cioppino and I grew up in NY, and I can safely say it was the worst cioppino I've ever had. The sauce was salty and tasted like it was burnt but they just used it anyway. The sauce was not the traditional chopped tomatoes but simply tasted like a bad oversalted (and burnt) marinara. The lobster was a langostino, not a true lobster tail AND to add insult to injury, all the seafood had clearly been frozen and sitting in the freezer for way too long. Even my toddler refused to eat it and she loves lobster and crab. I also ordered the ravioli and the spaghetti with meatballs and again the sauce tasted like a nasty burnt mess, the ravioli was overcooked to the point of soggy and I ended up throwing everything out. A total waste of time and money. I will not be returning.

Waited 45minutes told it would be10-15minutes when I checked in, bar had three empty tables but apparently not enough servers according to the hostess. The hostess didn't seem concerned in the least with their tardiness. The final time I asked about my seat I was told "just wait, I'll let you know." This was 30 minutes after they told me they were cleaning my table. Won't be returning I wouldn't recommend it unless you bring a good book.

Strongly do NOT reccomend this Resturant! Though the food is good you take you chances on actually getting it! Tonight was my mothers birthday dinner and we decided to take her to Bazils for good Italian dinning, we arrived at 7:00 PM and was seated immediately, when the waiter finally came to out table to take our drink and appetizer order he had a terrible oral odor from gingivitis after getting through the order we received our bottle if wine and other drinks for our party of 7 nearly 20 min later, the salad arrived 10 min later, we waited for nearly an hour them ordered another bottle of wine from the bus boy because the waiter was nowhere to be found, the older lady which I believe is the owner passed by our table and I was able to get her attention, letting her know that it was now 8;42 and we had been there for an hour and 40 min and still not received our dinner? She went to check on our meal, came back and assured me it would be no longer that 5 min more, we agreed to wait... Needles to say that too was an unfulfilled attempt to keep us longer, 10 min later we decided to leave... The older lady came out to the parking lot and stated "you owe me 60 bucks!, I think you are rude for ordering meals and walking out on your bill after drinking your wine" I attempted to reason with her, explaining that it had been 2 hours since our arrival and an hour and a half since our order was placed, she insisted that I must come back into the Resturant and pay the "60 bucks". I then went back into the Resturant and payed for our $60 wine and the never once tried to come to a reasonable solution to the problem, I suggest not to dine here, the management is very unprofessional and the help is severely under trained and thier hygiene is unexceptable.

Bazil's was recommended to my husband as a nice place to take me on a date many years ago. The person was right, the ambiance is perfect for romance. When you make your reservation ask to be seated in a romance booth, they are round booths that offer a little privacy while you eat. Also adding to the romantic ambiance are the dimmer switches allowing you to set the lighting over your table exactly as you want it. Along with romantic ambiance, Bazil's offers great food. I love the pasta fagioli and antipasto salad that are served with entrees. I almost always order the tortellinis, served in a creamy mushroom sauce. These servings are HUGE, my plate usually looks like I didn't even touch my meal when I am finished. Service is always friendly and our waiter/waitress is always happy to box up my leftovers for me. Bazil's is a great spot to take someone on a first date or someone you have been with for a long time.

Dark & overpriced with mediocre food at best. The fried shrimp were plump but tasteless really especially for $24.95. I chose the spaghetti for a side, thinking hey this is an italian joint it should be the bomb. Not so much! The antipasto salad is worth eating (since we all need veggies) but the escargo could use a little less drowing in butter/garlic. Just disappointed really. The young servers were happy to serve but the hostess/front folks were not so excited to be helpful. Our older friends at the table really like this place but as a couple in our 30s we wont be back on our own dime. (Try the Bazil's pizza joint next door, now that is yummy!).

Recommended for those loving a Luby's Cafeteria vibe. Owner and staff are unknowledgeable regarding the menu, the place is decorated like a dentist's office, and the food is way overpriced.

Great experience Finally a restaurant that doesn't cram your entrees down your throat before you get a drink, enjoy you bread and have an appetizer. The server (jessica) was amazing; she recommended great dishes and the food was fresh and cooked to perfection. Ps blue cheese martini! Need I say more

I really like this place. My grandparents have been taking me here for special occasions for the past 10 years and the owners know them by name. It is a little expensive but soup and an antipasto salad are included with entrees so you never leave here still hungry. They also tend to have some pretty awesome daily specials. I loved the mahi mahi with lobster. It was served with a lime sauce that was killer. My only complaint is that the lighting is super dim, but if you sit at a booth you can control the light above your table with an individual switch. They also don't seem to have many beers on tap, but I usually go with wine here anyways. If you're looking for a classy old fashioned restaurant, definitely give Bazil's a try.

Bazils and I have a long past. By long I mean like most of my life since I have had family that has worked there for nearly 10 years. I like Bazil's food, but it is VERY heavy. You also get outlandish proportions (very American). This is the kind of place that you won't think is good unless you know what to order. Same with the to-go. I will always have a fondness in my heart for Bazil's but as someone who has grown up in this area of town, and half of the male students of Catalina Foothills High School has worked her at least once, I know far too much about their dirty laundry. Bazils needs a makeover and new management... Kitchen Nightmares reno maybe? The food is better than that though. Pick Bazils to Go over the actually restaurant unless you want to spend $200 for dinner. I think theres definitely fresher and more delicious places to go, but if you want something savory and a nice relaxed environment, then Bazils is for you.

This place is steeped in the old-school east-coast Italian ambience that I've never really experienced it Tucson. Sweet nostalgia. Adding to that was the geriatric crowd of regulars - it was sweet that the servers and bartenders all knew them. Dark and romantic, not for kids. We opted to sit in the bar to order pizza, and it was delicious - definitely in my top five for pizzas in Tucson. Their sauce is boldy sweet and tangy - super good. We started out with an antipasto salad and wine. It was a lovely evening - a great opportunity for my husband and I to unexpectedly slow down and spend some great time and conversation together. Pricey? Yes. Modern and trendy? No. Inventive menu? Nope. Didn't stop me from loving it. Go with someone you love.

I went here with a big group of friends for a birthday dinner, and even though there were 11 of us, the service was impeccable. We had a manager checking on us all night and all we had to do was look around and someone would be right there to grab it for us. The food was great, and the atmosphere pleasant. I would definitely go again.

The hostess, originally from Chicago, said they used to be known as old fashioned, but now it's "retro." That they are! I had the steak Siciliano, the wife had the veal Marsala. Came with a salad of iceberg lettuce drenched in vinaigrette, a bowl of pasta shell and bean soup in a tomato base, bread, and choice of sides. She had the spaghetti marinara side and I had the steamed broccoli (isn't that virtuous?). The meat was good, all the others old fashioned, and our booth featured adjustable lighting so we could light it up to read the menu and turn it down for romance. Just fine with me.

I've enjoyed Bazil's classic Italian pizza for takeout several times. Dining in is an almost surreal experience in the bar, as the decor is over-the-top good ol' mafioso with a dash of ostentatious 70s disco thrown in to confound the wait staff. The bar is dark. This is the place to come after a bad facial peel or to heal a major sunburn. I can't imagine how the wait staff navigates the uneven carpeted mini-levels without calamity. Low-hanging stained-glass lamps slightly illuminate small circles on the dark tables and threaten to bruise the foreheads of the staff. Luckily the font on the menu must top 40 pts. I could read their menu wearing dark sunglasses 20 feet away. The lemon butter shrimp are tender, lightly sauteed and butterflied atop a thick, salty sauce that is probably artery-clogging, but addictive. The antipasto plate, salami and cheese slices with a few veggies tossed in a light Italian vinaigrette, is satisfying. While I didn't see linguini with clam sauce (the authentic Italian signature dish), the rest of the menu is classic and simple. If you can take your eyes off the hilarious back-lit glass grape bunches and twinkling lights embedded in the ceiling fabric long enough to notice, the presentation is detailed and the food fresh. It's a deal one can hardly refuse.

I can picture this place being a success back in 1995 or so, but overall has failed to keep up with the times. So disappointed and won't be going back. Went there with the family. In summary the only reason this is a two star instead of one is because the server was friendly and hard working. The baked clams were basically baked bread crumbs in little clam shells ... Where were the clams? My wife's eggplant Parm had soooooo much melted cheese on top that she had to peel back layers of cheese just to see and taste the bland eggplant. My chicken francaise I think was sitting under the heat lamp in the kitchen for a while. It had a film of crusted sauce over the chicken which after being cut up and mixed was decent. The antipasti was average but I had the same salad last week at Olive Garden . Overall for the money , there are so many other Italian restaurants to enjoy in Tucson ...bummed

What a wonderful place. Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, Bazil's offers wonderful Italian fare, great service, and a surprisingly romantic ambience. There are no windows, meaning it's always a cool, dark retreat from the desert sun and heat. The booths and lighting are perfectly done, making for a really homey place. When I lived in Tucson I used to order their exceptional pizza for delivery when I lived in apartments nearby. I also took my now-wife there for dinner on our first date, as well as the night I proposed to her. We were just back in Tucson this fall and had to return, and Bazil's again impressed. If you want a cozy, romantic place for Italian, check out Bazil's, it's really a hidden treasure.

I came here with a big group recently, and I have to say that the service was friendly and accommodating. You have a choice of two menus, either a pizza menu or a menu full of entrees. The main menu is definitely set for an elderly crowd because the writing was gigantic. Our table decided to order entrees. I went with the Eggplant Parmigiana. When you order an entree it comes with bread, an antipasto salad, and pasta fagioli soup. The bread was fresh and delicious. The antipasto salad was pretty standard, lots of chopped veggies, cheese, and meat, over iceberg lettuce that was lightly dressed. The soup was a little lacking in flavor. With all of the courses, the meal took a long time to come out, and by the time it did, I had already filled up on the bread, soup, and salad. The eggplant came out in a large portion, it was covered in a lot of cheese. I'm someone who loves cheese, but this was an overload. There was a lack of tomato sauce, breaded eggplant, and tons of cheese, so the dish was extremely heavy. Most of the dishes that came out looked that way as well. The eggplant came with a side as well. I had the choice of a baked potato, spaghetti, or a broccoli-pasta dish, that I ordered. The broccoli pasta was disappointing as well. The pasta had no sauce, not even some olive oil. I ended up stealing some alfredo sauce from a friend that had already finished their meal to make the pasta edible. The food was okay, but they seemed to rely on cheese and cream to impart flavor, which made the dishes one-note and extremely heavy.

We were in Tucson for a golf trip with a group a month ago. We found Bazil Italian on Yelp and it was near our hotel. It was a Friday night and we were early but it was almost full up. We got lucky and got a booth. It's a unique ambiance - mostly booths with adjustable light fixture over the table so we could turn it up to read the menu and turn it down for a more intimate atmosphere. The menu was varied enough that almost anyone could find something they might like. I had the Lamb Chops as did the wife of the other couple that accompanied us. My wife had the Angel Hair Pasta w/Tomato Cream Sauce and the remaining entree was the Grilled Italian Sausage over Polenta. It was all good. The lamb was tender and done just as I asked - Medium Rare. The Angel Hair was tasty and al dente. The Grilled Italian Sausage was excellent as reported by the husband! Service as very good. Things arrived hot and on time in the proper sequence. And the prices were reasonable. We would go back if we were in the area, again. Jim

Our first time here. It was a very pleasant surprise. The service was good. The martinis well shaken icey perfect. The shrimp scampi was perfect. The shrimp huge and cooked perfect not tough but juicy. My boyfriend had the pizza oven roasted ribeye and it was incredible. Cooked perfect almost 2inches thick what a surprise. We will be back often.

I don't think I have gone to a worse Italian restaurant. Let me start out by saying in their defense that they were short staffed. I gave them some leeway when waiting for my food, etc but this goes beyond being short staffed. We waited close to 30 minutes to sit and get our first round of beverages. We waited in a booth that the owner (?) sat us in for so long we thought they had forgotten about us. When it came to take our drink order we had to return the water glasses on the table because they were covered in lipstick. They were replaced and after 20 or so minutes we had to remind our server of our drink order. After placing our food order after another 20 minutes we sat in silence because we could not talk over the elderly people shouting at each other. I suppose that the reason there is no mood music is because no one would be able to hear each other. I got the low down on the party next to us, and at the end I felt like I knew too much. We ordered the tortillini and linguini and both were subpar at best. I think it took about 30-40 minutes for the food to come out... I lost track of time and resorted to coloring in the kids activity book provided to waste time/distract me. Both dishes came with a soup and antipasto salad. The soup was just the maranara sauce watered down with beans and pasta. The waitress pronounced it wrong (pasta fayoli vs pasta fagioli) and we at least got a kick out of that . The salad was mediocre but palatable. We chose a cream sauce for the tortillini and it tasted of flour. It was gritty and virtually tasteless. The clams (in a shell) around the linguini were very sandy and hurt my teeth to eat. The clams in the dish were not much better but I suspect that they were from a can/jar. I feel like I should find at least one good thing about this dining experience and I am having trouble. When we complained about the food, the service and the wait they took the linguini dish off, so at least we didnt have to pay for it. So, if you are looking for delicious Italian food served in a timely fashion go elsewhere. I never plan on going back. :(

Decor - A little dated with lots of stained glass Service - Formal but friendly Food - Tons of food!! This restaurant mainly has dishes with a cream sauce...if you prefer tomato sauce based dishes, go across the street to Laroccas. The off menu escargo is to die for...I mean any cooked with tons of butter and garlic can't be bad. Included with dinner is a anti - pasta course, soup, entree and pasta side dish. Trust me, theres enough food to feed you for a week. The place reeks of old school Italian, and I dont mean it in a bad way. The dishes aren't novelle or fusion, but pays a nice homage to traditional dishes.

I hadn't been here for years until we went a few weeks ago. It hadn't changed at all in 10 years from what I could tell. We really enjoyed the ambiance, which is pretty unique for Tucson. I love the look and feel of this place with its table side light dimmers and dark, timeless (some would say outdated) interior. Feels like the only thing missing is a group of mobsters in a corner. The only downside is the food. We had two pasta dishes, both around $25. They tasted literally like something I could've picked up in a freezer at Safeway and heated up in a skillet at home. That is to say, not bad, rather flavorful, and like it should cost about $8. On the other hand, the dishes were huge and gave me leftovers for 2 more meals. Also served with antipasto salad, bread, and soup - we were almost full before the main course arrived. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Service was on the slow side, but we didn't mind. It feels like a good place to go for a romantic date, rather than to enjoy the food. So I give it a 5 for ambiance and overall enjoyment, and a 2 for the food. Comes out to 3.5. I'm not feeling overly generous, so 3 stars it is.

Bazil's is easily the best Italian food in Tucson, and this coming from a native New Yorker. It isn't the best Italian I've ever had, but it is, again, the best in Tucson. You get what you pay for at Bazil's. Every entree comes with a delicious antipasto salad, pasta fagioli soup, endless bread, and the entree itself. The salad greens are always green and fresh, the meats and cheeses are good quality and tasty, and the vinaigrette dressing is sweet yet a little tart and just absolutely wonderful. It is an excellent salad, one of the best in town. The pasta fagioli is also loaded with flavor, and is great to dunk your bread into so you get every last bit of the soup. The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, and a great compliment to a good Italian dinner. We've only tried a few dishes here, personally when I find something I like I tend to stick with it, but what we've had has always been excellent. The chicken in the Chicken Parmigiana is cut thinly and breaded perfectly, and baked perfectly with a lot of yummy cheese. If you don't like cheese, don't order this! It is then covered with their rich and flavorful red sauce, which is seasoned well and is a perfect consistency for Chicken Parmigiana and for their pasta dishes and side dishes. We've also tried the Chicken Francaise, which also had well cooked chicken and a tasty lemon sauce. My husband enjoys the baked potato on the side with butter and sour cream, but it is pretty basic as far as a baked potato goes. We've also had their pizza to go, and it is also excellent. The service here has always been friendly and pretty good, and the owners are kind and often present. The atmosphere, while not the hip "trendy" style that everyone likes so much these days, is cozy and great to bring a date to. You can really feel like you're in your own little world with your partner while eating here. My one small gripe is that they charge per soda refill. Soda should never not have free refills. We love Bazil's and go here for all of our special occasions. We would recommend it to everyone!

I love this restaurant, and I'm not elderly. If I lived closer I would go there more. It is pricey, although if you are careful, you can get around that. Example: split the Anti pasto salad and the Pasta Pazoli soup. Very inexpensive for what you get and it is great! Their steaks are outstanding, and the bar is cozy and serves well made old-school drinks. I had to chime in after seeing the negative review, it's worth a visit for sure.

Still the best place for us in Tucson. If you love Italian food and a great atmosphere this is the place. I had the best Lamb chops today.

Had a great experience. Service was prompt and friendly, food was excellent and when my mother didn't see spaghetti carbonara on the menu she asked if they could do it. Our waiter Miles graciously asked the chef and they delivered and it was excellent.

Was nice.

Jim

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
