There were six of us. Out of the six dishes we had, only one said their dish was ok. The flat iron steak had a processed rubbery texture to it and the meatballs looked like pressed together cat food. I was very disappointed as we were celebrating our friends 40th. The service was good and the presentation of the food was beautiful, but the taste was awful! I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant where the food was almost inedible.

I've been wanting to try this place ever since Chef Greg LaPrad announced that he was leaving Quiessence Restaurant in Phoenix to open his own place in Sonoita. The holidays were just too busy so I had so schedule a little wine tasting excursion on a Saturday in January with my mom, hubby and his mom. After a full afternoon of driving around and tasting wine we were all ready for dinner. I had made a reservation for 5:30 (they open for dinner at 5pm) and I think that was a good idea. The dining room is pretty small and all the tables were full by 6pm. Of course they do have some patio seating which was mostly empty since it was a little chilly that evening. The concept is farm-to-table, same as at Quiessence (which is part of the Farm at South Mountain) and so they work with local farmers to get the fresh produce and local ranchers for the meat. We saw plenty of cows grazing on our drive! They also have some seafood options including several oyster appetizers. Our server explained that on long cattle drives cowboys would bring along live oysters to eat since that was the only type of seafood that would travel. Little bit of trivia for you there. I think I read somewhere that Overland Trout was old cowboy slang for bacon so I was surprised not to see a lot of that on the menu. Overall most of the dishes were pretty basic American fare. Nothing too fancy. This is definitely a meat and potatoes type of place, just slightly elevated. Hubby and I started with the potato soup since our server highly recommended it. Good idea since I loved it! Smooth and creamy with a crisp fried potato slice on top for some texture and just the right amount of truffle shavings. I highly recommend the soup. MIL got the basic side salad called simple greens which actually was quite large and looked really good. No iceberg lettuce there! Mom declined a soup or salad and instead ordered oysters as a starter which she was nice enough to share with me. She got the crispy dilled oysters which were basically 6 fried oysters each served on top of a thick round slice of dill pickle with a dollop of tartar sauce. The oysters were big and meaty and cooked perfectly. We both really enjoyed this dish. For our entrees both hubby and his mom got the meat and potatoes which was basically just the same as a pot roast you might make at home. But the meat was tender and flavorful and they both liked it a lot. Mom ordered the veal scallopini which she loved as well. I tasted a bite and thought it was a bit too sour from all the capers. But I guess that is how it is supposed to be... I've never ordered this anywhere else. We both thought the greens tasted like spinach even though the menu said arugula. No biggie. I had the pork tenderloin and I think this was actually my least favorite dish. The meat was roasted with a bit of a crust on the outside and then sliced into medallions. It was an ample portion with also a lot of rice. I took probably half the plate home. There were some pumpkin seeds and peanuts scattered around but that was not enough to add flavor to a bland dish. I did enjoy the sauce but there just wasn't enough of it. I probably would not order this again. I was a little disappointed in my meal but I think it was because my expectations were too high. Everyone else really loved the food and I did like it enough to come back and try some more dishes. The dining room is really nice looking. They had some nice touches like white tablecloths and good silver but they still have a subtle cowboy theme. I loved all the wood around everywhere, the tables and chairs are gorgeous and so was the ceiling. The main attraction is the view of the wide open grassy prairie which they show off with a huge picture window. Overall, it's a classy place but nothing too fancy. I think I expected Overland Trout to be as awesome as Quiessence and it is not. But it is a great addition to the area. If you are out in Elgin / Sonoita area wine tasting there are not a whole lot of options and this is definitely the best restaurant around. A little pricey maybe but if you skip the starters its not too bad... and the portion sizes are big enough that you can do that even though the server recommend multiple courses for the full experience. Now that they have a happy hour menu I think it would be worth it to pop in just for a drink and some oysters, to relax and enjoy the view.

So disappointed. I did not even get to step foot into this establishment and was quite disappointed. We make it down to the Sonoita, Elgin, Patagonia region once per year to visit the local wineries and were very excited to have reservations at Overland Trout. We've heard quite the buzz about this new eatery and were looking forward to celebrating my birthday here yesterday. After setting our reservation a few weeks ago on Open Table, I stopped at the Overland Trout website to check out their menu and drooled over the exquisite looking offerings. We had it planned out perfectly and after our second winery stop of the day, I noted a missed phone call from a 520 area code. I listened to the voicemail. It was someone from Overland Trout telling me that they were not open tonight (Saturday 8/2) and would be open next weekend. I do understand from their website that they were closed for a month for Summer break, but had seen that they were re-opening on Friday 8/1 to serve dinner. There are few options in the area for dinner, which by this point, I was left with maybe two places to eat an "okay" birthday dinner. Just plain disappointed that I didn't get to eat here for my birthday. The Overland Trout folks could have called prior to Saturday afternoon, the day of our reservations... especially considering we've got so few options down in that area. Big bummer.

Chef Greg created one of the most unforgettable meals we have ever had! Each savory bite made you crave more - wishing the meal would never end!

I wasn't super stoked to try this place out because of some of the reviews but it did come highly recommended by a family member, so we decided to give it a chance. We liked everything we ordered but there were some things we weren't overly impressed with. Let's start with the good stuff... The place is adorable; they have huge windows overlooking an infinite grassy rancher field which was beautiful, the place is decorated in style and on first glance I gave my approval. We ordered the wine country burger with mushrooms and swiss cheese and the monte cristo sandwich with sunny eggs on top (i posted pics of both). Did we enjoy the food? Yes! Did we think it could have been a little better? Yes! The ingredients were great quality and very fresh, however the burger could have used something more (maybe an option to top it off with a sunny egg or some mixed greens or arugula, just a little touch other than the meat-mushroom-cheese combo). The monte cristo was essentially just a glorified grilled cheese, but it was tasty. The cole slaw was different and pretty good (and I usually hate cole slaw with a passion) but I actually had a few bites of this particular one. They do have a decent selection of wines and beers (try the san tan beer made with local grapes - interesting and delicious). I do believe they change out their menu quite often though, so there is a lot of potential here. Now onto the stuff we weren't too crazy about... We came at 11:30 am on a Sunday and were hoping for more of a brunch. They only had one brunch-y meal and that was the monte cristo, and NO mimosas. The menu lacks options overall; for lunch entrées your options are salad, burger or baked potato (plus some apps and small bites). They were also out of one of their salads because they ran out of lettuce (??). My only other complaint is is that their side options were either cole slaw or potato salad, which I am not too fond of either. However, depending on your taste buds, other people might enjoy this. I will be returning to try more food here in the future.

A friend from tucson brought us to do the sonoita wineries and was adamant we eat lunch here. I'm glad she insisted this place is a gem. We arrived in a Saturday at about 1:30 and it was uncrowded, a restrained but interesting menu was presented. My husband and our friend had the burger with blue cheese and a red wine glaze on a potato roll with the bacon slaw. Delicious and perfectly cooked. I had the pork burrito with cabbage apples and cilantro - very interesting blend of German and Mexican flavors. The homemade pickles were delicious. We also started with the cheese plate which I thought was a little lackluster. The wine & beer list was well thought out and my German Pilsner was delish! If headed out this way this is a fabulous place to stop for a bite.

We came here for my birthday dinner. We'd heard from another guest staying at our B&B that it was tasty. My wife wanted to have a nice dinner for my birthday, so we made reservations. So glad we did. The wait staff was attentive (Chantel??) and the food phenomenal. We tried the "feasting" which meant chef's choice over several courses. This was a lot of fun and a tremendous way to try different menu items you might otherwise pass up. I will definitely come back and tell people about this place. There were no negatives, but I do agree with another diner that the chairs are a little hard. Of course that could have been the two hours we sat and ate our SEVEN courses! Oink oink!!

Don't bother. Very expensive, poor quality. I had high expectations as they stress using high quality, local ingredients, so I was incredibly disappointed when their "BBQ buffalo" burger turned out to be a frozen-patty-looking, bland burger, and their "BBQ sauce"?! Not even close!! They also served me the skin of the onion, poorly breaded, and undercooked as "onion rings". When we expressed our disappointment, they offered to re-fry onion rings...after we had already asked for a box, but they did not try to satisfy us any other way. My companion's torta was mostly dry, overcooked, and bland pork. Even after we informed them if the problems they still charged us full price. Not coming back.

The flavors dished up by Chef Greg and his team are so wonderful, I would even consider trekking to Sonoita just for a meal at Overland Trout. I've dined once for dinner and twice for brunch now. I also have been lucky enough to enjoy some small bites prepared for a lunch event. Our dinner was a wonderful plated multi-course experience purchased as part of an auction package....worth EVERY penny. The beauty of my brunch visits is dining with people willing to try a variety of things from the menu and share. Definitely recommend trying one of the breakfast cocktails. Watch for special menu nights like Valentine's Day or at the holidays. Be prepared for changes to the menu. Things are very seasonal. So if it's not the season for apples, don't expect to see them incorporated into any dishes. And, thank you to the wonderful staff who has been not only gracious but also knowledegable about the menu and able to make recommendations.

What a great find in Sonoita. Enjoyed some excellent wine and amazing "flaming cheese" before the beautiful entrees came out. Prices and options are wide-ranging for people with different tastes and budgets. The Cesar Salad in particular was large, affordable, and unusual in the best of ways. There is Art in these dishes. I hope this great, classy place stays open!

This place way misses the mark on food and service. We tried 3 dishes and were thrice disappointed. Corn over dressed and undercooked, tacos under-seasoned and poor presentation, their take on pico de gallo was fine, but nothing I'd go back for. When we were done (plates empty, glasses empty), our server disappeared. The place wasn't very busy, but we couldn't get a bill! Finally, when we did flag down another server and got the bill, it had an error. Sigh. We left disappointed and will not be back.

Seriously? This wonderful chef from Phoenix has opened a lovely little place with great views and ambience but the food and service was abysmal. We had reservations for Sunday brunch at 10am. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were seated on the patio out front when the (rude) hostess addressed us to let us know we were early. Yep, we were as we didn't know how long it would take to get here. But we were not trying to get in ahead of time. I hate to write poor reviews, I really do. We were invited in and seated at 10am but did not place our order for food until 10:30. There were literally only two other tables filled at this point. Where was our waiter? The menu looks amazing but the food was such a disappointment. My potato/egg dish was actually a disappointing salad (with no mention of lettuce on the menu) with little dressing, way too much onion, and flavorless crumbled trout. Hubby's omelet resembled something from Denny's or IHOP. The "not from concentrate" orange juice was flavorless as well. The only redeeming plate were the banana fritters and Bisbee coffee. I see other terrific reviews and I can only hope that dinner is a better idea. Sorry...

I love this restaurant! We have had really great brunch, lunches and dinners here. I love the Queso Flameado appetizer and also the Shrimp Ceviche. The shrimp bisque is amazing too. For dinner entrees I loved the Sea Bass and the Quail. My favorite dessert by far is the vanilla lime sorbet with the almond cookie on top. So refreshing and amazing. For lunch I love both the trout platter and the cheese plate. Not only do they look beautiful they are delicious. I had never even tried trout before and I love the trout deviled eggs! Brunch is great too. I love the divorced eggs and the bacon is the best I have ever eaten it glistens with what I am guessing is maple syrup. Seriously great! They also have what they call Potato Cakes that have so much flavor you won't be sorry if you get these! The menu also has a great selection of wine from Arizona Wineries. Everyone who works there has been so kind to us. It has a great ambiance and I love looking out the big windows to the rolling fields that go on forever. It is a great restaurant and it is always a treat to eat there!

Had a great meal! Love the AZ wines on the menu! Stop in after a day of wine tasting. Had the Pastel de Gallo with a glass of Dos Cabezas, would recommend this dish. The chocolate creme bulee was delish!

Had dinner for the first time here. We are locals and looked forward to a restaurant we could enjoy. The service was great, limited menu. I enjoyed the pastel de Azteca, but my husband was not impressed with the Sonoran enchiladas. A one time visit or once every three or four months, unless they expand the menu. You can eat reasonably if you don't include alcohol.

I originally wrote the review below a few days ago, but then realized that, since I'm the only reviewer so far, a 3 star review may unfairly disadvantage this new business. Even though 3 stars means "A Ok" on Yelp, reviewers are so quick to dish out 4 and 5 star reviews that a 3 star looks bad. So, because I want this place to succeed, I'm upping it a star. But if I come back and there are still no vegetarian entrees..... Original review: On a recent road trip to southern Arizona, my boyfriend and I ate dinner at Overland Trout, which had just opened a few days prior. We made a reservation by following the instructions on the outgoing voicemail message, leaving our name, number, number in party, etc. When we arrived, the hostess misunderstood us, apparently, and thought we had 6 people instead of 2. She panicked and mumbled something about not listening to voicemails until we got through to her that we only had 2 people. Apparently she couldn't just look up my name and see that the reservation was for 2. This is most likely just a "just-opened" kink in the system. We sat down and the restaurant was about half full. Service was prompt and friendly. There's an extensive wine list, and I ordered a glass of local wine while the b.f. got a local beer. The bread was delicious. Meat and potato fans, rejoice! There are no vegetarian entrees. There is one fish entree. I ordered the trout plate. It was tasty, but for $16 dollars I thought I'd get a little bit more. I ate lots of bread. :) This restaurant is a good addition to the area. Judging by the baseball caps, athletic shorts, and kids crawling on the floor, it appears the locals aren't used to a white-tablecloth kind of joint. I'd go back if I were in the area, but if this restaurant were in a city, I wouldn't bother with a second visit.

My friends and I went to the Overland Trout for Sunday brunch. I really wanted to like it but can't say I did. The staff was great but the food was not. My eggs were overcooked and the rest was not much better. One of the people in our group is a vegan and she had the oatmeal which was very pricey and so so. Our other table mate had eggs with some sort of sauce and you would think since with eggs with sauce that you could find the eggs. They should put it on the menu and lots of sauce and not much egg. I was very disappointed - Breakfast was over $60 for three people and it was terrible. I give it a 2 only because the wait staff was terrific.

Food is fantastic and extremely thoughtful. You don't expect food of this quality or creativity in Sonoita. If you are tipsy aka wine drunk from drinking in Sonoita all day...there is no better place to go! If you are reading this...you are hungry. Eat well...life is too short for bad food!

I have been looking forward to trying Overland Trout since before it opened. My husband and I finally made it down to Sonoita on Saturday. We arrived at the restaurant and were greeted by the friendly hostess (she continued to be wonderful throughout our time there, checking up on us, boxing our food, and wishing us a good night); we sat at a bar table for happy hour. From the beginning, our server was borderline rude, curt, and definitely did not make us feel welcome. I was surprised that the happy hour was so minimal; the only specials that day were $2 sliders and a $6 Dos Cabezas pink wine (delicious). We ordered the Angels and Devils on horseback- dates and oysters wrapped in bacon. They were decent, but nothing special. The oysters were a bit fishy. We decided to stay for dinner to try the full menu. Before taking us into the dining room, our server very aggressively persuaded us to get the sliders. It was kind of awkward- I don't like to feel forced into getting more food. They were good, but still. Our server (unfortunately) continued to wait on us in the dining room. We were very disappointed to find out that the beef that night was corn-fed, which seemed strange, seeing as they claim to be a local-sourced restaurant and you can watch cows grazing on grass from the window. So we ordered the pork ("meat and potatoes" on the menu) and the Sonoran enchilada, as well as the caesar salad. Randomly, after ordering, our server stopped by for the sole purpose of saying condescendingly, "so you are ONLY getting the pork, enchiladas, and a salad?" as if it was not enough. In total, we spent $90 before tip, so I feel that that comment was downright rude. The caesar salad was nice, but, again, nothing special. The entrees were presented nicely, but did not live up to their appearance. The pork was dry, and tasted like Frank's Red Hot (not what I want to pay $19 for). I am 99% sure the potatoes were from a box (or made to taste like they were?) and there was no arugula to be seen. The dish was flavorless. The enchiladas were fine, but very sparse and downright boring. We left disappointed. The wine was the best thing about the menu, the hostess the most friendly person we encountered (we did hear the other server interacting with the tables and he seemed very nice). Maybe we ordered the wrong things, but a seasonal, local menu should taste more fresh and exciting than it did. And no service should make us feel that uncomfortable.

This place was the worst. Their service was extremely slow, the food was cold, and although the waitress was kind, the owner was rude, snobbish and arrogant. Not good qualities to have in friendly, family-centered Sonoita. Before we could order, the waitress went into a spiel about "we're SOO lucky to have our chef from Phoenix!" Tip: Don't mention Phoenix outside of Phoenix. The rest of the state isn't impressed by that. Once our food came, it was cold. All of it. I ordered a lovely pork dish that would have been great, had it been warm. At the end of the (excessively long) lunch, we gave the waitress some feedback, since they had only been open two weeks. We told her that the service was slow and the food was cold. She thanked us in front of the owner. One of us asked for a toothpick, and the waitress said, "you know, we don't have any, but we'll add it to our list." The owner looked at her, looked at us, and said: We'll NEVER, ever have toothpicks." Wow. Not that I want to dignify her rudeness with a response, but I've eaten at plenty of fine dining, all over the country, and guess what? They carry toothpicks.

I have to ditto VRs review. First, I called the day before for a reservation and never heard back. So I called the day of and they apologized that they had not listened to their messages. There was no problem getting a reservation so all was well there. I was very disappointed there were no vegetarian entrees on the dinner menu. I was able to pick out side dishes that they served to me as an entree. My overall impression: Service good. Food is good but not outstanding. Overall too pricey. We had the cheese appetizer plate to share and my husband had bass and I had 3 sides. My husband liked his bass and two of my 3 sides were very good. I had the capirotada for dessert which really was very good. Bottom line: I do like that they get their produce local and there were a lot of Arizona wines available. But really? Not one vegetarian entree on the menu??

Went with friends for the valentine dinner. Got there a bit early - they were very patient finding a wine the ladies liked. Shantrell was our waiter and could not have been more attentive and personable. The entire meal was spectacular and the wine pairings were very good. I highly recommend this restaurant.
