El Charro Restaurant Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

El Charro catered an employee breakfast for us. Jonathan was very prompt and detailed in getting back to me in the planning. He arrived on time at 6:30 am, set everything and came prepared. The food was great, coffe, oj and flavored creamers too! Came back a few hours later and cleaned up and took everything away. I would absolutely have them cater another event for us. Thank you Jonathan!

Okay, I'll say a few nice things about this place first: the salsa was pretty good and the staff seemed happy. Although the salsa was okay, the chips were from Costco. You know, the tortilla chip strips that come in a 3 pound bag? There's nothing wrong with Costco chips, but I expect a little more from a Mexican restaurant. And the chips were cold when they were brought out. Anyway, my parents both ordered tacos which came out in store-bought shells. My dad said, "This taco is only warm in spots. The rest is cold." And that wasn't even the strangest/worst part. I ordered a burrito with shredded beef inside. The beef was not Mexican style at /all/. It was the kind of roast your grandma makes in a crock pot and serves with mashed potatoes and gravy. Yes, that's right. It was completely bland with no spices or taste...all wrapped up in a tortilla? I'm glad I ordered mine enchilada style. Otherwise the plate would have tasted like nothing. All in all, this place serves pretty bad Mexican food that you could easily replicate with a quick trip to Costco, for a fraction of the price. I think people eat here simply because it is a convenient distance from the square. Skip this place for sure; a short drive to another restaurant is worth it!

The food is affordable and decent, but there are better places in prescott to eat! My entire plate felt like it was just cheese but there was supposedly an enchilada buried in it somewhere. The server Chris was fun and helpful, ask for him!

Bean dip was good Chile relleno was good burrito was juat so so my chimi was bland and the beans were bland service was ok. Except the staff doesn'ttake well tI being told that the chips are stale..because the arent reallyadequate here so don't ask for a new basket 2 more times becauseit won't make a difference.

Was just there last night with my sister from out of town, and obviously they take cost cutting to the extreme. Worst chips I've EVER tasted...salsa was equally terrible. Food had ZERO taste and barely edible. The margarita's were equally horrible (very odd taste) and I suspect they came from a bottle. Service was a tad slow..but waitress was very nice. Actually....Taco Bell would be WAY better and much cheaper. I've been to this place before...and although I never thought it was that good.....I don't recall it being quite this BAD. The green tamale we had was so bland, doughy and very thick with ZERO flavor. So gross. I will never go there again. As a general rule....if the chips and salsa are bad (no care taken to make them taste good) that is your first indicator that food is going to be equally bad. Certainly proved to be true here. We should have just gotten up and left after we tasted the chips and salsa. Bottom.....don't waste your time here if you want good Mexican food.

My family, including our 3 small children, just had lunch at El Charro and found it incredibly accommodating and friendly, despite our mess. I had the El Tango plate and it was just as fantastic as ever. I eat here regularly and highly recommend the Boracho Burrito, the Chimichanga, or if you want something you can continue to eat for lunch another day, the El Grande Burrito--all WICKED GOOD WITH SALSA PILED ON!!!

The cantina is where it's at! They have a beautiful bar with handmade details, colorful art and lots of big screen tv's to watch your favorite sports on. Their tequila selection is huge and their house margaritas are delish. Seafood dishes are really good here - I especially like the stuffed avocado appetizer and the shrimp tacos. Great place to go to relax and enjoy a drink in the heart of Prescott.

The Chile Relleno was cooked perfect, chilie was not crunchy and not mushy. Ask for the Hot salsa, way better flavor than what they bring out w/chips. I think it was a #6 combo we ordered, all was good and I would go back.

Worst food and service ever! Steak looked like a pork chop. Black beans tasted like car oil. Taco shells were super stale. Last time I came her was good . Not sure what happened.

This review is for breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised at how good my breakfast enchiladas were and how accommodating the staff was to my request for no bell peppers. Hubby had the breakfast burrito which he enjoyed. I really liked the potatoes since they were not mushy. Service was good and friendly.

First let me start at the service, we got sat then waited 15 min for our server then took our drink orders. Waited for another 10 to get those and the restaurant had 4 tables max in it. Terrible service. The food was unfavored and not authentic Mexican. The reason I even gave it 1 star is because the churro was good. Smh never again going here

I wouldn't say this is the best Mexican food I've had, but I prefer more food that is more aggressively seasonaed and spicier fare. Even so, I have eaten here many, many times, and all my visits have been consistant and satisfactory. I know just what to expect, so I will come back. I usually stick with one of three menu items Borracho Burrito -- I like the shredded beef, topped with green sauce Cheese & Onion Enchiladas (these are some of my favorite anywhere!) El Tango Special -- Red or green chili meat served with a cheese and onion enchilada and rice or beans. They do a respectable job on their green chili. The chips are always good. I'm not a fan of their salsa. It's well made, but is more like a taco sauce, smooth with red chili flavor. A few of my friends love the stuff and buy it to go, so this is really a preference thing. The margaritas are always top notch too. The thing that has stand outs for me is I have had very good service in all my visits. A couple times we have come with 2 or 3 kids under 12 and the servers have been very accomidating even with the extra work that's required. Reading the reviews, there have been some very unhappy Yelpers. I've never tried some of the dishes that accompanied some of the one star reviews. But this restaurant has been around since 1959; I've eaten here since '85. They also expanded to double their size just a few years ago. If you haven't been here I think it's worth a try. - I you feel this review is Useful, Funny, or Cool, please check the boxes below. Thanks.

Huevos rancheros were ok... solid chips and salsa and an amazing chili rellenos.

I've always had good food here. I like to sit on the cantina side because it seems more casual. I always order a chile relleno, enchilada and rice. I have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and the food is always consistent which is very important to me. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Prescott.

Yummy!!!! Good food and good service. We had the Chorizo enchilada and they were fantastic. Added a fresh grilled Serrano pepper on top for a little kick

I'm not sure what all the negative reviews are about this place. I ordered half chicken and half shrimp fajitas to be delivered and they showed up fast and hot. I was surprised with how much was in the box! They also gave me 5 or so large tortillas - which was nice considering most places give you 3 small. Even the fried ice cream was still intact and seriously delicious. I also received a box of rice and beans and a bag of chips with my order. Yummy! Will be ordering again soon.

honestly, please do not waste your time coming here. The waitress we had was not attentive at all, the food was bland and somewhat repulsive and also way overpriced. Chips and salsa can tell you everything about a restaurant and the chips here might as well be store bought and put through the microwave. The salsa is watery and is in no way fresh at all. Upon arrival, there were glasses upside-down on the table and there was a large water pitcher for us to pour our own water... the only thing is I have no idea what has touched that table and there were no straws for us. When we asked for straws it took forever for us three to receive just one because the waitress forgot the other two. It also took 20 minutes just to get two skinny margaritas. Now, the food.... the food... overpriced and plopped together. We ordered a simple order of nachos with chicken and it cost $15. after the long wait for it to arrive, we were presented with a burning hot plate the waitress said nothing about, dry chips and a big scoop of what seemed like canned shredded chicken in the middle with little seasoning and guacamole and sour cream. oh yeah, and some cheese that was probably 1/8 of a cup and that was for the whole 10 inch long plate! They were the most horrendous nachos I had even come in contact with and they were bland bland bland. Mind you, I am from Texas where Mexican food is a great part of our diets (once a week type of thing) and this "authentic" mexican restaurant served me something I authentically did not enjoy. for two margaritas, slow service, a plate of nachos and some bean dip, the whole lunch cost $46. This is by far the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. I will NOT be returning. A last note is that the atmosphere is very poor. The floor was absolutely disgusting. There were so many chips crushed into the carpet, and I don't know what else to say. DO NOT GO. On the bright side, the water was good. So if you want a nice glass of water I'd definitely go.

The food is on the level of Filiberto's. It's just not that good. Very bland and lacks flavor. The chips were cold cheap pre-made from the bag. The salsa was ok. We sat for a very long time, with menus closed, waiting to place our order. The food arrived on scorching hot plates. Details: I noticed the ceiling fans were on reverse in the cantina. Not sure why but it was hot and stuffy.

This is certainly not the best Mexican food you'll ever eat, but it hit the spot for me. The service was good, and they are open slightly later than other places, which is a plus here. A quick note about adventure: That's right, Guacamole Adventure. You do get to make this yourself, so be prepared! The rest of the food was nothing special but not terrible.

Great breakfast not your same ol same ol. The empanada's were tasty and since nobody ever thought of serving them for breakfast it makes theirs the best. Service could of stepped up but over all great price and enjoyed the meal. I am coming back.

Me and my "gang" (friends) take frequent motorcycle road trips from Scottsdale up through Prescott. These trips always include a stop at El Charro. We've been there many times. while the food isn't the best Mexican food, it is very good and consistent. I also like the low key atmosphere and the wait staff has always been very friendly and enjoyable to deal with. HOWEVER, I am concerned because on my most recent visit a week ago, I was disappointed to see that management has decided to make some (at least one) change which I think is a big mistake. One of the things I've liked about El Charro has been their chips. Many other Mexican restaurants serve excessively fat fried chips (you know, the ones that look like you could just squeeze the lard out of them). Fortunately, El Charro served what I considered to be a more light, baked type of chip (whether it was baked or not, I don't know). It was one of the things I always looked forward to as part of the meal. On my visit last week, I knew there was something amiss the minute I bit into my first chip. It wasn't the same. It wasn't as crisp and seemed almost stale. I mentioned it to the waitress and she confirmed that management had shifted to a GMO free chip. What?!!!! Why?!!! I think management needs to rethink this. First, most people don't go to a Mexican restaurant with the desire or expectation of eating healthy. Second, unless they changed the entire menu to GMO free, what have they really accomplished? Is management on a personal crusade to change the world? Is it a political statement? If so, that is a dumb business move. Is it a marketing move? Do they think that by offering GMO food, that it will appeal to a large customer base and therefore be better for business? If so, are they also going to eliminate all sugary drinks such as Coke? I mean, what's the point? What are they trying to accomplish. Speaking for myself, and I bet the vast majority of their customer base, give me the good, tasty stuff and leave the healthy crap for the tree hugging, juice drinking vegetarians (who won't patronize El Charro anyway). Again, a dumb management decision. One other thing I've liked about El Charro is their Ice Tea. it seems like plain brewed black iced tea which is the best and hard to find in the current restaurant world where many restaurants allow their suppliers to talk them into serving that terrible foo foo (Passion fruit) flavored ice tea crap. A total bogus sell-out. Hopefully El Charro won't go down that road. Management; please accept this input with the constructive intent with which it is intended. I'll give El Charro another try but if this nonsense keeps up, we'll have to find a new favorite place to stop when passing through Prescott. Thanks.

I think this place was misnamed. It should have been called "El Chorro", (look it up, it means loose stomach). The food was poor, service took forever and prices were nothing to shout about. (My bill was $60 or so and I got a taco plate, a kids burger, a bowl of horrible bland menudo and a chile rellano. I eat better at Garcia's and for less). The restaurant was not packed. There were empty seats around. The server came to drop off chips and salsa...mostly tomato sauce with garlic powder. Later came waters with a pitcher and four sets of one napkin with silverware. Then we waited and waited to order. We didn't order a specially cook steak or anything difficult yet it took over thirty minutes or more just to get this mediocre food. It was so frustrating. I believe this place is open due to the shear desperation of people having options here. But I'd strongly suggest going elsewhere. Next time I'm in the area, I'll try the Taj Indian place next door. Great little town. Sad little El Charro restaurant.

This was by far the worst Mexican Restaurant I have Ever even at. Makes Taco Bell look like a 5 star restaurant. the chips were store bought and the salsa was nothing but chopped tomatoes with hot sauce mixed into it. I ordered a combo meal of an enchilada and tamale. both items were tasteless. My husband ordered the daily special of beef taco and a tostada. Fat was dripping out of the taco and the tostado tasted like cardboard per my husband. They should be ashamed to call the themselves a Mexican Restaurant. oh and it is very overpriced to boot.

Came here with the family the day before thanksgiving. ... service was quick and attentive, and the food was served promptly, was hot and quite tasty! Was surprised by some of the other reviews, but have learned that on yelp, you just can't please everybody so better to try yourself sometimes. ...

The food tasted very good and the prices were incredibly reasonable. Our service was friendly and reminded me of a Hometown diner. I will definitely come back. They offer free delivery during certain hours and have a separate side with a bunch of different drinks and happy hour specials.

  • Ramon M.

This is the worst restaurant. If I had a option to not put a star then I would. This restaurant is possible the hardest to order from and on top of that I get put on hold for 10mins. That is just unprofessional and has to be some kind of joke. I am sick of this place because this is the third time something like this has happened. Pulse the seating in the restaurant is horrible and is only for small people so if your are a larger person your going to feel like you are inside some midget both. I will be happy to take my money else where.

Leon wanted Mexican and didn't know much about Prescott. We ended up on Montezuma Street, finding El Charro close to closing time.. The appearance was not impressive. The place has an old time giant bar able to slake any alcohol-laced thirst. The chips were good, the salsa; tomato sauce with mystery heat. Wisconsin Mexican. No offense Wisconsonians, it seemed like a salsa someone in the cooler, more northern parts of the nation would find at home. "Oh no, oh no, oh no" was the soundtrack deep in my head. I Yelp*. I went big. I ordered the Complete Dinner Deluxe, a little bit of everything served on a turkey platter. The Chicken Tortilla Soup was To Die For. And I rarely use those three words. I could have had a giant bowl of that, chips and funny salsa, and been a very happy man. Flavorful, lots of chicken, seasoned to fit my palate. There was a dab of guacamole, it was good, the avocados properly ripe. The frijoles were more than decent. The flat, rectangular, flour and oil flavored sopaipilla mystery needed college in New Mexico The cheese was all yellow American. And lots of it. It's hard to goof up a yaller cheese and onion enchilada smothered in sauce. It was OK. The large chile relleno packed with cheese, smothered in sauce, crispy and good. I wanted to sample the menu, I didn't want to eat it all. I couldn't. And I couldn't take any with me. Shame on me. The menu says ice cream for dessert. I looked forward to that. It was deep fried ice cream made up like a sundae of your choice. Crispy, chocolate-saucy, whipped creamy giantness. The meal could feed three. Would I return here on a Prescott trip? You bet. Particularly lunch. I hope my words haven't put a knot in the tail of any charros. Prescott is a proud town and El Charro's been here a long time. I never intend to offend. That's the way it was for me.

Enjoyed a wonderful breakfast here yesterday morning. I had the huevos rancheros with the green chile carnitas sauce and coffee and it was excellent. The waitress was charming and attentive. We discovered this place a couple of years ago while visiting our parents in Prescott. We always stop by when we are in town. Keep up the great work.

Food was great, perfectly seasoned and not too salty like some Mexican restaurants can be. We got there during happy hour sat in the bar side of the restaurant about 6 PM on a Friday night. Wasn't too crowded and drinks were only three dollars for a pretty good margarita. Ordered guacamole "make it yourself" that was kind of fun, waiter wasn't as attentive as we would've preferred. Two in our party had the chili relleno, wonderful, other two had chimichanga and pork Carnitas, with a side of onion cheese enchilada. We could see why they are really known for their onion cheese enchilada, it was delicious. If we lived in this area it would definitely be on our go to list for evening meal.

My husband was in the mood for Mexican food, we happen to see this place and decided to try it out. I'm glad we did, my husband said the red chili was very good and I had the fry bread. That fry bread was soft, fluffy and not greasy, topped with beans, cheese, lettuce and tomato...simple, but I think the best fry bread I've had. I think everyone should give this place a try.

My wife and I have been in Prescott for only 4 years but have been coming to this town for over 20 years. Wow so many changes in the quad city area, but El Charro has always been a tradition for our family. The best authentic Mexican food. They have some of the original chefs that have been there for over 30 years. Fajitas, fish tacos(fried or grilled), or original combo plates are some of our loves. Most of the time its busy, so just be patient and nice to your server or bartender. Realize your blessed to be eating any kind of fresh & tasty foods. So many in this world have none. Be blessed America.

I have only been here twice, and only tried 2 things, so my review is just for the Tortilla soup and Avocado/shrimp appetizer. If you want a refreshing, light lunch as opposed to the typical, heavy Mexican/American food, order this. It really is the best homemade Tortilla soup ever and that appetizer is so yummy.

Well what can I say food was terrible - chicken enchiladas was filled with canned chicken - making the plate soaking wet with water- completely tasteless. My wife complained and they replaced her full meal with a single "meet?" Filled taco. The meet had bone pieces in it. Almost making us sick - we were able to get our bill. Which included a $3 charge for sour cream. And the full price for the meal that was taken away. Glad to get out. I felt sick all night. Service? Don't even get me going. AVOID

I sat at the bar and the bartender seemed to be in a very foul mood. The food was okay, but but Arizona Mexican food great. I paid with a debit card. After leaving I realized that the bartender had switched my card with another customer. After going back I got a very nonchalant I don't care getting from her. She eventually decided the receipts and key me knew that I was lucky because she had run the other person's card twice on accident. I was out my only card for a week and the other person had been charged double.

Good food needs more seasoning. Waitress in particular need to learn to pick up plates and not rely on the bus boy. If a half portion of shrimp fajitas is 8 shrimp a double portion should be 16 not 9!!!!!!

All fresh ingredients and very tasty without overpowering spices. Fresh cilantro used, meats grilled just right. We chose this place at random without even looking at Yelp and found a great surprise. I had the tacos dorados. Made-to-order tacos with fresh onions & cilantro. Both chicken & beef had very subtle spice so you can taste the fresh high quality meat. Kids had the cheese crisp (we call them quesadillas). They raved so I tasted: very yummy grilled meat and a nicely crisped tortilla: yum! Finally we had churros. Obviously fresh made: crispy outside & soft inside. Not too much sugar. Overall excellent!

Just ok. Nothing memorable nor worth returning for. Kinda pricey for the quality of food, however the portions are large. Here's my breakdown: Chips: D Cold, old, and seem to come out of a bag Salsa: F It's pretty much just tomato sauce and very runny Folded taco: C- The shredded beef inside was moist and flavorful, but the taco shell itself was a Pre-made shell, those you can buy in a box at a grocery store Rice: B Not great, but edible. Beans: A Probably the best thing I had there Cheese enchilada: C Just ok. Overly cheesy and the enchilada sauce was kinda blah. Service: A Overall: C-

The service was good. That's it. This is the most disgusting, sorry excuse for Mexican food I have ever experienced. Chips and salsa were blah. The beans literally tasted like water. The rice was not cooked. I ordered carne asada tacos and got lettuce with some slices of really fatty meat that was beef, but not carne asada. Very disappointed.

Check out the New Mexican Moonshine from Roger Clyne. The margarita is awesome! This is that great joint you love to go to because it is consistent. Always. The beer is cold, chips are great, salsa is ...well you get the drift. Quick in & out if you are in a hurry. Or sit in the Cantina side and have some cold ones. Their enchiladas are great. Basic and wonderful. If you are looking to be wowed by some crazy creation - not your place. If you are looking for consistently good mexican food that the whole family can enjoy in a nice relaxed atmosphere. This is your place.

We got up and walked out! We had stopped in for lunch today and waited almost 10 minutes to be seated, even though the place was virtually empty. We waited at the table for another 10 minutes and no one took our order. We were getting a bad vibe from this place anyway, so we decided to bail. Before leaving though, I found an employee hiding in the bathroom talking on his cell phone...too weird. This place desperately needs some professional management.

The female bar tender was great. The male bartender was horrible. No personality and did not know how to make a Margarita. The food was horrible!!! Do not waste your time and stop by this place.

When we walked in the staff greeted us and let us pick our own seats. Our server, Zane, was extremely nice and very patient. I'm pretty indecisive and he never got pushy. He brought chips and salsa out immediately, I thought the chips were a little stale and the salsa was kind of spicy. I told the server about the salsa and he brought out a milder salsa. The mild wasn't as flavorful, it was pretty plain. I mixed the mild and medium and it tasted decent. Once we did order the food came out at a reasonable time. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito, a tostada (with shredded beef and the works) and a side of rice and beans. The rice was a little plain for my taste, but I usually eat my beans and rice mixed, the beans were really good so it worked. My burrito was pretty good, the tostada was really good. The shredded beef was very flavorful and moist. The tortilla because a little soggy because of the meat but I ended up just eating it like a soft taco, which I was okay with. It had guacamole on top that was really tasty. I would of ordered a bowl of that again. It was awesome. The price was a little much for me. I'm not sure if I would come here again because of the price.

I grew up eating here, and I would agree that the food quality has done downhill over the years. It's not as terrible as other reviewers have said, but it's not magnificent by any means. I work downtown so I usually get the food to go, therefore can not truly review the service. I find the enchiladas to have wayyy too much cheese, and I love cheese! It overwhelms any flavor the rest of the dish may have had. Salsa is not chunky like I prefer, but watery and thin. I personally like that it has at least a little heat to it. Chips are often stale and not salty enough to my taste. Used to love the Boracho/ "drunken" burrito, but have not been as impressed the last times I have ordered it. Overall, it's edible but underwhelming Mexican food. Explore other options

We went for breakfast this morning. Mine was disappointing and hubby rated his as fair. I had the Huevos a la Mexicana. The eggs were over cooked and there was maybe 1 egg. The peppers and onions were barely cooked- they both tasted raw. I had the Mexican potatoes - don't bother, stick with the rice and beans.

We took our friend from out of town here for some "authentic" Mexican food. Never having been here, we thought that we were going to get some decent fare. Wrong. The food was incredibly bland, the salsa was gross and our waiter seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there. The girls who worked there seemed really sweet and kind however, if I do return to El Charro it will most likely be to the bar side for some Margs and not the food.

I've been here for breakfast which is great, but just tried it for dinner the other night...FANTASTIC. Why was I wasting my money at Chili's this whole time? Dinner comes with free salsa (pick your heat level) and chips. I added a side of guacamole which was under $3 and got a decent bowl full. Guac was very creamy and not over seasoned. Dinner was shrimp fajitas which are the best I've ever eaten...and I don't say that lightly! The shrimp was top quality, tortillas were warm and soft, and the garnishes were generously portioned. The house margaritas come in either original or strawberry...delicious, but probably a little over priced for the amount you get.

I've been coming here about 10 years or more. First, let me say that the enchiladas are the best I've ever had. The drunken burrito is what the place is famous for, and it's earned it. Down to earth place. Friendly, very friendly people. Shrimp fajitas were LOADED with shrimp- a very nice suprise. They're expanding into the space next door- the place tends to be crowded, even in this economy. But, do try the enchiladas. OH, I almost forgot. They have a very old Pepsi machine. It uses ice to cool it. It makes Pepsi and Diet Pepsi that taste almost like they were fountain made, if you've ever had one of those. Definitely try one. How much do I like and trust these people? We went here after my mother's memorial service. With 10 minutes on a Saturday, they gave us their back room and sat all 14 of us together. What great people.

Had two lousy dinners here in the past so I thought I would give breakfast a try. Same experience, limited and overpriced menu. Food served lukewarm, cold potatoes. Tax, tip and coffee will run about $14

Stay away! I had the chili relleno and it was cold and soggy. This was after sitting at the table waiting for our food for an hour. They took the cold food off our bill, but the damage was done. We also had the tacos. The meat was good, but the shells were soggy. There are much better places to eat just down the street.

Service was great, it opened before 8am and the food is average. My biggest complaint was the coffee was warm, not hot. I ordered chili relleno and it was just okay. The menu had tons of stuff on it and would like to try it again but the coffee has got to get better.

Low quality food and horrible service, and the salsa tastes like Pace with some tomato paste mixed in... Truly substandard. I ordered a 2-taco platter - 1 carnitas and 1 carne asada. I asked if I could swap from soft corn tortillas to hard, the server answered, "Probably not!", and she acted as if I had asked her for one of her kidneys. I asked if the tortillas were warmed, as I do not enjoy my tacos falling apart halfway through dinner. She stated, "The tacos are hot!" I decided to order the meal anyway. After ordering, the host brought us chips and salsa. The salsa was horrible. I asked the server if she had any other salsa, and she rudely said, "No!", and made no inquiry as to why I was asking. When the meal showed up, my tacos were hot, as the server promised. However, and as I suspected, the tortillas both fell apart after a few bites. The carnitas were mushy and flavorless. The asada was overcooked, crunchy and tasted too much like charcoal. The beans were Taco Bell quality, and I feared tasting the rice due to the rest of the meal being so horrible... And this is just MY meal. My fiance had an equally bad experience with her meal!

Good service, cheese enchilada and Chile relleano tasted very good, rice was mediocre and salsa tasted canned. I would recommend this restaurant and I would eat here again when in Prescott.

Love, love, love El Charro! It's not the food, so much, although I love their enchiladas and their drinks. Last time I was there, I had to request a watered down 'rita since I was driving. It was still very strong. The staff gets A+ for their service. I ordered a margarita but was served a mojito. Easy mistake since El Charro's names on the menu for these drinks were almost identical. The waitress trekked all the way back up to the bar (next to the cafe) twice until it was right. Prices are very good, as are the salsa and chips. (And, yes, I have had good Mexican food in SD. I have also had more than my share of crap Mexican. El Charro's food rates a B; drinks and service, A+. If you want lots of good, spicy Mexican and great drinks, check this place out.

I decided kind of late to go to town for some good Mexican food. I've been going solo for awhile so it is nice to find a place that doesn't make you feel so alone. I decided on El Charro once again. The restaurant side was already closed so I went up a few steps in the other direction into lounge. It's a delightful place with big screen tv's placed here and there. It wasn't loud and obnoxious like many places are, but more relaxing and subdued. Its a very pleasant atmosphere for a quaint after hours dinner. Kelly was the bartender and server that night. If you are looking for excellent service, just find Kelly. She is friendly, upbeat, energetic, personable, knows the menu thoroughly. I was very impressed with her and it was fun watching her interact and serve other customers. She is definitely an asset to El Charro's. The combo plate came out bubbly hot, plenty of smooth spicy sauces and cheese. Everything was seasoned well, flavorful and very good. The only thing I would maybe suggest is with the taco shell. While good, they use the ready-formed crispy shells. Though they are probably lower in fat and better for you, everything else on the plate points to making their own. Thank you Kelly and staff for making a lonely night out pleasant and satisfying.

Decent, if unexceptional Tex-Mex. The bar is a cool place. The red chile isn't that hot. Salsa is good, but chips are store-bought. Not as authentic as they claim on their sign, but you could certainly do worse. They do have good drink specials - 2 for 1 beers and margaritas on Friday.

This place was pretty lame. The chicken nachos were not very good. Some people in my party thought the chicken seemed like canned chicken. I'm not sure it was *that* bad. The service was poor and the decor tired. However, we did like the prickly pear margartias.

The good reviews of this place are a prime example of why Zonies don't know crap about good Mexican Food. The farther away from the border, the worse the food is, everyone knows that (I think). The tostada was crap, the salsa is crap, the fish taco is crap( however the white/orange sauce they give you is ok), the chimichanga is crap, etc... If any of the good reviewers ever make it to San Diego go to the following places and you will realize why El Charro is El Crappo: El Portal on Genesee Ave, Margos on Garnet, La Playa on Mission blvd.

The food was very tasty and they have some great spicy salsa! We went here twice during our recent visit to Prescott. If you are planning to order food, the service is much faster and smoother on the restaurant side (vs. the cantina).

Excellent service at lunch. Good chips and individual bowls of well spiced sauce. The foot long flour tortilla with beans and pork carnitas (choice of fillings) was delicious. Served with good rice and beans.

Bad food and lousy service. Not much else to say. Salsa tastes like tomato paste and beef contains MSG. The prices make this place especially unworthy of your hard earned money.

Danger! New Owners (Not Mexican)! The tacos are nasty. The taco shells were the hard shells you get from the supermarket. The shredded meat was straight from the can, no spices; seems like it had been sitting in a crockpot all day. The waitress took the order and we never saw her again. On the plus side, the busboy was nice, and brought us spicy hot sauce (the normal sauce on the table was bland). Prescott has lots of good Mexican Restaurants, there's no reason at all to eat here.

El Charro Cafe, from which some really good traditional mexican food has been delivered or eaten for the past fourteen years or so, don't forget (No olvide) a pitcher muy bueno (most awesome) of margaritas. Plates are hot and come with the regulation "really hot plate" warning that should be a standard in any worthwhile taberna. Authentic mexican food............you can taste the lard....I swear...... and I like it. The staff is great on chips and salsa refills, quick with food service, and friendly even when you get in just before closing. Now they've open Cantina Manana, in the space next door. a slightly out of place, wood finished bar is, made great by the handpainted mexican tile inlayed bar top, across which some fresh margarita recipes are been served. Fresh fruits and top shelf tequila make a nice addition to downtown Prescott's "Whiskey Row", serving a full menu from their compadres next door. I was mildly disappointed in the Grilled Chicken Fajita Salad, lots of words in the discription and not a lot of flavor. Stick with the classic here and you can't go wrong. Plasma screens and happy hour should make for a good upcoming football season. Service here is a little more cantina like so don't bring kids unless you are a legal guardian, yes even to eat....I watched as a party of soccer kids and coach were asked to leave....however the staff is over the top friendly, sincerly I felt, if not over the top busy. so be patient, all good things will....make their way to your table.

If you're in Prescott and want to have some good Mexican food, go to El Charro. Their margaritas are excellent and some of the items I'd recommend are their tacos, burritos and steak quesadillas. Definitely a cute little spot for a quick lunch or dinner.

Food is overpriced and service is horrible. I don't want to see places close in Prescott, but we would be better off with a good bistro here instead. Worst Mexican place in Prescott and that is including Taco Bell.

I generally think of four potential places to get Mexican food in Prescott. Of the four, El Charro is somewhat in the middle of the road. If you are looking for a nice place to sit and enjoy good food, it is one of the best. If you are looking for a nice greasy burrito from a hole in the wall place to feed your animalistic side, Alfonso's can be a better choice. I am partial to Hugo's Cocina and Barbudo's Burrito Company when it comes to a quick lunch, but on a Sunday, both of those are closed. Both Hugo's and Barbudo's have quite small dinning areas which could be a problem if you have a big party, are claustrophobic or want a place to sit during the lunch hour rush. El Charro also delivers. I would recommend the Baracho burrito, perfect size and excellent taste. If you are downtown and looking for a place to eat, you can't go wrong with El Charro.

This used to be a good place to eat. I grew up eating here on a regular basis, and always enjoyed it. But in recent years things have headed downhill. The food has lost its authenticity, and the wait staff has lost (for the most part) their brains. About the only thing worthwhile here is the chips and salsa. If you want authentic food, there are WAY better places in town (Maya's, Hugo's, Garcia's)

The Chile Relleno was cooked perfect, chilie was not crunchy and not mushy. Ask for the Hot salsa, way better flavor than what they bring out w/chips. I think it was a #6 combo we ordered, all was good and I would go back.

Thanks.

I've always had good food here. I like to sit on the cantina side because it seems more casual. I always order a chile relleno, enchilada and rice. I have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and the food is always consistent which is very important to me. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Prescott.

The food tasted very good and the prices were incredibly reasonable. Our service was friendly and reminded me of a Hometown diner. I will definitely come back. They offer free delivery during certain hours and have a separate side with a bunch of different drinks and happy hour specials.

honestly, please do not waste your time coming here.

  • G J.

We visit on every trip to Prescott! Great spicy salsa and great bloody Mary's to kick off a weekend! The food is tasty and priced well. I will be returning on future trips!

I was surprised to see low reviews. We really liked it. There was too much cheese on and in my enchilada. Other than that, we loved it. We will be back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
