Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

In the mood for Mexican food in Patagonia? Might want to make it yourself... Somehow I suspect that there are some menu items that could be good, but we tried 3 things: enchilada, bland; chile relleno - made with a good chile but otherwise blah; and beef taco - the meat was flavorful!. The salsa seemed like grocery store tomatoes blended with a hot pepper. Good flavor from the pepper but otherwise nothing to it. Chips were hard and definitely not home-made or even purchased from a home-made type supplier; same with the tortillas. Beans and rice were again, completely bland and appeared almost canned. There was a sign offering menudo, posole and a couple of other items. I wish I had tried the posole or menudo, those dishes are usually made fresh when ithey're offered at all. A couple of locals were eating hamburgers, maybe I should have taken the hint.

This is not the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten, but was pretty bad. The salsa was not spicy and appeared to be a blended tomato. My vegetable "burrito" contained no beans or rice. Instead it was lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and cheese wrapped up in a tortilla. And I specifically asked that it not contain carrots! The best thing you can say about Mercedes is that it's really cheap.

I thought the food was pretty good. The ambiance leads a lot to be desired, but I had tilapia with butter and garlic and my husband had the machaca. Both were good. The salsa was nothing to write home about, but the the people were very nice and I would definitely eat here again if i lived around here.

The wait was long, not much for ambiance but the food was good all the way around. Menudo was awesome. The waitress was Very sweet.

Very, very nice people. Very helpful with pointing out roads, camping, and hunting areas. And for that, they get an extra star. The food, aside from the pozole, which was average, was not good at all. Bland chicken in the chimis. And I don't even know how to describe how bad the carne asada was. Burnt, chewy, greasy, bad flavor. The beans were cold and lacked flavor. The chips and salsa were passable.

In a (taco)shell, Mercedes Mexican Restaurant is a bit different, a bit like the town of Patagonia in which you find this restaurant. The town itself is a three blink town, meaning rub your eye and you'll miss the whole town. Especially this place which is a converted home, setback from the road a bit, displaying a diminutive sign with a faint Mexican flag behind - the only indication as to the cuisine served here. The food: the guacamole is fresh. Chips are freshly made and hot. a large beer selection, both domestic and import, are offered (read large by Patagonia standards). Salsa is a bit different; kind of plain and simple, but truly home-style like many a home cook has made for me before; yes, I'm used to having a strong tomato base, but somehow this was a refreshing, albeit a bit bland, offering if lacking a few other ingredients. Beans were on par, but nothing spectacular, chili rellenos were properly made with egg, not wrapped in greasy batter, cheese was tasty in the enchilada and the meat in the taco was the most flavorful item, but the taco shell left much to be desired, even if the taco was devoid of any cheese and you had to dress it with extra lettuce on the plate yourself. The ambiance: well, its different, its small town, its casual. It will suffice for the need of sustenance in the flavors of Mexican; however, I feel that that prices charged for the food items were too high: at least offer a unique twist or ultra high-quality, ultra-fresh food or enormous portions for the prices charged. Overall I was torn as to offer two or three star rating. I settled on three. Given the location, competition, or lack thereof, service and setting, plus a local family run business Mercedes is truly just a-OK. Maybe time will change things for the better and prices will become more inline with the food quality and flavor or vise versa with taste and quantity. Final rating: 2.8 Stars Food: 2.7 Stars Price: 2 Stars Cleanliness: 3.5 Stars Atmosphere: 3.8 Stars

As one of the only restaurants open in this small town on Monday we stopped to get a bite to eat. They were out of one menu item, out of non sugar sweetener and the restaurant itself was not very clean. I went to use the restroom, which you have to go outside to do, and it was filthy, with no paper towels, and broken fixtures. I ordered the taco salad and it had no flavor at all. The only things with flavor was the mexican rice, which was very good. We came in at the same time as 4 other people and after we all had to wait an extremely long time to locate anyone to pay the bill as everyone just seemed to disappear. Very dissapointing.

Lesson learned: geographic proximity to Mexico has no bearing on the quality of Mexican restaurants. This place was an enormous letdown. The chips were overcooked and the salsa was lackluster -- not a good way to start. Entrees lacked, oh, what's that called? Right. Flavor. There's better Mexican to be found. Try someplace else.
