Great food and service. Take my family here on a regular basis. The place to go for Mexican food in Maricopa.

If you like good food and don't mind getting money stolen from you come eat at Penascos! We came back because we like the good food. We're never going back and here's why. Things seemed fine to start. We had our delicious margaritas, chips and salsa and we had ordered our meals. Soon, our margaritas got lower and so did the chips and salsa. When we asked our server for more chips, the new bowls were literally tossed into the empty ones with a huff. Hmm? That was strange. Sorry we want more chips while we are eating at your restaurant. The kicker: We, too, were victims of the 20% Auto-gratuity, for a party of FIVE. Then once we paid, the server totally disappeared, seemingly not wanting to face us, knowing that auto gratuity is uncalled for, I assume. Looking back, we wished we had just used cash to pay the bill and leave NOTHING for the insolent server (She said she was an owner. Ma'am, why would you treat your customers like this, especially AS AN OWNER? And to the co-owner family members, you may want to put this particular person in a role where she is not dealing directly with customers.) We felt taken advantage of. Although it is close by home and we enjoy the food, our only recourse is to never return. You do not deserve our business.

Terrible service, food was terrible, and the atmosphere was not good. I know good restaurants and this one is far off. I will never eat here again. Just awful

  • La Cebolla ..

Definitely not good eats. Don't waste your time and money. Food is very bland and over priced for what it is. The margaritas weren't even good. What mexican restaurant can't make a Margarita? Won't go back.

Great place to enjoy Mexican food. Everything I have tried have been very tasty. The service is quick and staff is very friendly. After coming in one time one of waiters remembered me and ask if I wanted the same. Great experience.

Never again will I go. I believe I went 3 times over 4 years. Each time got worse. The food is over priced, zero flavor. Boiled chicken in the enchiladas with a sprinkle of cheese. Their salsa and chips is the best thing they offer. Complained about horrible greasy nasty ground beef enchilada (inedible) and was not comped! Go to Cilantros!

My wife and I have been eating at Penascos since we moved to Maricopa in 2006. Lately I have been going in for lunch once or twice a month and we might eat there for dinner once a month. The menu has changed within the last year to make it a bit healthier overall. My wife noticed that right way and likes it better than before. My menu favorites are the seven seas soup, the ceviche, an occasional hard shell chicken taco, and the chicken fajitas. However, the go-to for me is certainly the chicken fajitas. I get them with the refried beans, which incidentally are made without lard, no cheese, extra salsa, and a side of their green and red enchilada sauces. Those sauces are both great and if I do not finish any sides I always take them home and eat them later. There are a lot of restaurants in Maricopa that have come and gone. I personally am very glad that Penascos has stuck around and hope that they will be around for a long time.

We have been going to Penascos since it opened and had not had any major issues. The food and prices are moderate with them changing the menu for the better. We will continue going here as this is probably the best mexican place in town.

We have been back a few times and have been less impressed. My wife enjoyed her veggie burro (which had chorizo......) but my enchiladas with the white sauce came with separated sauce and a glob of cheese on top, no where near as good as the first visit. The black beans were watery.

I've lived in Maricopa for about 5 years and I have to say Penasco's is by far the best restaurant in town. Went last night and as usually was greeted with a friendly hostess They are under construction and have added these fabulous booths, love the ambiance, Spanish music was playing im not a big drinker but decided to have a drink and ordered a margarita and needless to say it was delish!! For dinner I had there speciality las concha's with whole pinto beans with chorizo which are great, I could eat a pot of them. They are a meal on its own. I think the have been opened in 2006 so they are definitely doing it right. I recommend if you live here or driving thru Maricopa stop by it will be worth your while!!

Our first visit to Penascos will be our last. When we arrived there was only one other table being served. We should have taken this as a sign. We ordered the chorizo con queso as an app and then hubby and I each ordered a combo plate, which come with rice and refried beans. I liked the chips (although they needed salt) and we agreed that the salsa was lacking any flavor and we buy a better one at Fry's. The queso was flavorless except for the chorizo clumped in the middle of the grease pool. The chorizo was probably the best and only flavor we tasted all night. Chili relleno was stringy and inedible(except for the cheese inside), ground beef was unseasoned, taco shells soggy and tasteless and too much cheese on the plate(and we love cheese). The cheese enchilada also had cheese melted on the top. The shredded beef was okay, but dry. We had already heard that the margaritas here were awful, so we didn't try them. The host gained a star in our review because he was much more friendly and attentive than our server. Our server seemed very unhappy being there. He was probably even more unhappy after our lackluster tip for his lackluster service. :) To sum it up, no. Just....NO.

Nice outdoor patio, a good prickly pear margarita and just so-so Mexican food.

The food was good not outstanding for the price. What got us was the service and the check. 5 of us came in for dinner splitting the check 2 on one and 3 on the other. We were moved after being seated because they forgot they had another party coming in. Ok honest mistake pick up all your things ant move to the very back. Then we had to flag down someone to take our drink order and she was irritated and had to "deal" with us. Finally got our appetizers and drink refills and soon after the food came out. There were several people walking around but NO ONE would come over and check when we needed refills on drinks, chips or salsa. By the end of the meal I was ready to just go home and flagged down someone to bring us the bill. The 2 bills come and they already have a 20% gratuity on them. What? It was 5 people I have NEVER seen that for a party of 5. I guess they figured that is the ONLY way they will get a tip since their service is horrendous. I will not go back which is sad being a family business and locally owned is what drives us here and yet anther one we will avoid. I think what is even worse is the owners don't even acknowledge the issues when you bring them up. Good Luck to anyone else brave enough to wait!

  • Ken M.

Mmm! Great food. Always good service and nice ambiance. My wife and I always order the Malcajete and shrimp tacos. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is the pricing. Our bill is usually around 50.00 for two people, seems to be a bit much. Oh ya they play good music, we like Mana!

I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants and I would say this place is mediocre. I've had better seasoned Carne Asada. The beans weren't very flavorful, but was okay. The Bloody Mary was aweful. I could have made better. It didn't have the ingredients in it to make it the Bloody Mary. I won't return. The waiter was good, but could have been more personable.

    (3)
  • Anastasia B.

The Bloody Mary's are delic! The pico de gallo is tiny individual portion, not impressed with it. Love the outside area, misters are cool and wonderful!

  • Carla N.

If you want a good margarita (Cadillac) and the best chips and salsa, this is your place. The staff is friendly, family owned and operated, and the atmosphere is good. Usually, I order the fish tacos or the carne asada tacos, also the Rocky Point Fajitas are fantastic. Beans and rice are the best around.

If you read the reviews to this place, you'd think the town of Maricopa had split personality. People give it ones, others give it fours. What's up? Well, you have to understand Maricopa, which is not a huge town, and which is separated from the next closest area with multiple restaurant choices by a long stretch of road. Therefore, people here are happy to have restaurant choices period. Some folks would give McDonalds four stars just for having their doors OPEN. I think that is all that may be keeping this restaurant from financial disaster. Contrary to the experience of others, our service was good. The waiter checked on us often, and was nice enough to explain items on the menu. He was knowledgeable about the product he was serving, as well. The queso was good. It was a large plate of queso, as well. The chips were nothing special. I would guess probably bulk buys from Sam's club. The Salsa, again, probably bought in bulk. Nothing amazing there. Then the meals came. I ordered a chimichanga, my husband a burrito. We got the same thing. Neither were fried, the wrapper on mine was nearly completely uncooked. I ended up taking the meat out of the middle and just eating that. The meat in mine was tasteless. The red sauce was bland... The beans were very good, but that was hard to enjoy when the rice was bland, with no seasoning whatsover. Spanish rice should have cilantro, seasonings, ...kick! This stuff was lying there quite dead. My husband ordered white rice. It came filled with carrots, peas, and other vegetables. Clearly not just white rice. This is not explained on the menu. We ordered dessert--fried ice cream. They were out of ice cream. How can you be out of that with two grocery stores within your line of vision? It was explained you have to buy from "approved sources" when you are a restaurant. This is such bull that it isn't even worth dignifying with an answer. Of course, we went to Dairy Queen afterwards for ice cream, and they didn't have any vanilla ice cream. Have you ever heard of a DQ without ice cream? Again, welcome to Maricopa...

Gone back multiple times since my first five star review....slipping. just doesn't seem fresh or flavorful anymore...at least Chipotle is rumored to be coming to town...cheaper and better.

Worst experience ever!!!! This was our 3rd time coming here and the food was terrible. First time they charged us a 20% gratuity on our check and didn't even tell us, and our service was not even good enough for a 10% tip. Then on top of that the server disappeared and never returned our change. 2nd time, it took 10 minutes to ever have someone pay attention to our table and bo one ever brought us drink refills, but the food was ok. 3rd time, the food was cold and hard and looked just "old", we asked for the manager and the server got pissed. She then came back and said the manager was busy but would come out and talk to us when she had a chance. We said fine we are just going to leave then we got up to leave. She followed us towards the front and said we still needed to pay the bill. We said we weren't because we didn't eat because the food was terrible. Then the owner lady came out and threatened to call the cops for stealing food. We told her go ahead as we proceeded to leave. Her and two employees followed us out but we got in our car and left with them all yelling at us. Talk about CRAZY!!!!

Been here a couple times now. Both times the service was great. Very friendly and helpful staff. First time was pretty busy and the food was good. Second time had less guests and food was great. Brought a couple people with us the second time and they loved it. Homemade food and great explanations about the recipes origins etc. Our server is the daughter of the owners and really took pride in everything. We ate outside on both occasions and really enjoy the plants and atmosphere. The prices are higher than Cilantros and Tacos And More but it's not a fast food joint so that's normal. They provided separate checks with no problems and even had a great conversation about Rocky Point. Plan to make this place a regular. So glad to find another enjoyable non-chain restaurant in Maricopa. Keep up the good work!

Came here 15 minutes before happy hour started and suddenly we were recognized for our order just 2 mins before happy hour. Happy hour wasn't even explained upon request. Food wasn't anything to brag about... Tip: no splitting plates allowed. Apparently they believe they have enough clout for that.

This place has good food. Their lack of reservations is silly. On the weekends they tell you to come and dine with no wait. When you arrive you end up waiting over twenty minutes. The atmosphere leaves tons to be desired. The walls are adorned with xerox copied photos of the beach. They all say "courtesy of the UPS Store." The tables are crammed together. So much so that if you drop your silverware you make intimate friends with the table next to you. The smoking patio must go immediately if they are to survive. Each time a server opens the door smoke and ashes waft into the main seating area. This is not a bar with dollar tacos. Their food is actually good. I recommend the enchiladas. As such they need to curb this bar type smokers patio.

Great breakfast and you have to try the chicken burrito with jalapeño cream sauce. However, the service is definitely lacking and they cannot make a margarita.

I wish there was a choice lower than one star. To put it simply, this place is horrible and not worthy of your time or money. Even if I looked past the bad service, poor food quality, I could not look past the long strand of hair in my soup. I ordered the small bowel of abondigas soup and cheese crisp ( what could they possibly do to a cheese crisp). The soup tasted like a canned tomato soup with mushy meatballs and some vegetables. It had no flavor whatsoever. The cheese crisp was nearly as bad. It was a cheap processed flour tortilla with too much cheese on it, horrible. My companion ordered a hamburger for her grandson, it was dry and over cooked on basically meat thrown on a dry bun, nothing else. I could go on but why, save yourself and drive on by this horrible place!

Open until about 10pm nightly, in what at that hour is the deserted Maricopa drag, this sort of "hidden in the parking lot" dining destination deserves to be distinguished as delectable domestic, deliciousness. Don't think that you cannot get Menudo on Saturday and Sunday, or mejillones served in a vodka sauce! The prices are moderate and the atmosphere is cantina. While I was eating there late one evening on a Tuesday night, I was actually repulsed when a decision was made by the hostess to begin a cleaning up regiment using nothing less poignant than Pine Sol! I gasped, I choked my Rocky Point Fajita, and I glared evilly at the kitchen door. Don't think I did not pack my remaining food and take it to a less "resin scented" area to enjoy it without that hassle. In fact, I want to give this place another star, but I cannot when such poor judgement was made. I guess at least the place is thoroughly cleaned. Muy bueno!

This place is a real shit hole. I have never had worse service or worse tasting Mexican food. Everything tasted like it came from a can or a jar. The waiter we saw two times and it was to take our order then to check and see if our food was ok. We told him it was cause it was apparent this place and the people have their head stuck so far up their ass they could smell their breath and that translated to attitude and the way they cooked their food. As a Hispanic I am very embarrassed by this place and what they call cooking. The margarita was so watered down it tasted like ice and salt. I do not think anyone could save this place. PLEASE! Stop going there Maricopans!! This place SUCKS!

  • STELLA C.

This is a great place to eat! Amazing rice I have to start with I feel over the years I have become a rice snob, thinking Mexican restaurants did not put enough thought into my favorite side dish. They have great red rice!! And the atmosphere is truly a mom and pop simple super casual environment, what do you want in Maricopa Az lol I have to say the food is really really good, I have eaten here many time and have never been dissapointed, from the pork chile verde to the Las conchas! Delicious!!

    (4)
  • Todd P.

I've eaten here two or three times, and I couldn't tell you what I've eaten; it's pretty unmemorable. It's the only sit down Mexican restaurant in town, so if you demand full service, knock yourself out. Otherwise head over to Tacos N More.

I miss Penascos, we lived in Maricopa from 2006-2012 and when Penascos opened we were so excited and frequented the restaurant weekly. My recommendations are Las Conchas, Flautas, the queso dip, Enchiladas, I mean I never had a bad meal here and I'm Mexican so I hold Mexican establishments to a high standard. Don't believe all the bad reviews, the people of Maricopa are very bored and have nothing better to do than complain about everything. Look at my other reviews and you'll see that I'm honest about what I say, I have given several restaurants one stars because they SUCKED!! I dont hand out five stars just for the fun of it. I've brought my family to Penascos and they all loved it too, in fact my sister's always want to eat there when they pass through Maricopa to or from Phoenix. The weekend breakfast is also delicious, tastes just like my mom's home made breakfast food, for dessert the mini-chimis are so good! I'm not a fan of refried beans anywhere but they are yummy at Penascos but the house beans are delicious!!

Penasco's continues to improve over the three years we've lived here. We went there with a coupon for breakfast recently and it was excellent. They have regular fare but don't pass up the spicy entre it was great and as advertised, spicy! I find the staff friendly and helpful

My husband and I decided to keep driving and found this gem. From the start, our experience at this restuarant was top notch. Our waiter greeted us, asked us our names and continued to use our names through the entire experience. He was very friendly and very helpful. The food, oh my lord, the food was fantastic. I love this place. If we ever make it down there again, this is going to be added to our list of restuarants to frequent.

How did I end up in Maricopa? Rhetorical, unimportant question, but I kept asking myself anyway. What was important was my hunger. I spotted Penascos in a relatively new strip center on the main drag and even through my myopic, sunglass covered eyes going 40 MPH, clearly read their happy hour sign - $2 Coronas! An hour later, we're sitting on their patio with said Coronas and fish tacos. I will admit I'm not a fish taco expert like many Yelpers, so I'll defer to you all, but they tasted very very good to me. Unbattered fish with a creamy vodka sauce and what I think are all the other regular condiments. The beans and rice were so good. Their House beans are very like homemade; left whole and filled with lots of good things. The free chips and fresh, thick, spicy salsa were also excellent. They were very attentive, keeping the necessities and chips/salsa coming. I'll be back!

My wife and I went there after a long day. We showed up around 9:20PM and they close at 10:00PM. The place was still busy and the welcome upon entering was warm. My wife and I sat in an area that we felt was cramp, but it was adequate. The chips and salsa were amazing. The chips are homemade and you can tell which ones were on the bottom and top of the fryer basket by color and taste. My wife ordered two ground beef tacos with rice and beans as she is a no non-sense woman. The tacos were a bit greasy, and the flavor was lacking. I ordered the Chimi A La Rellana which is a chimichanga topped with a chile cheese relleno. I was asked if I wanted white, green, or red chili sauce and ground beef, shredded beef, or chicken. I opted for the green chili sauce with the shredded beef. I'm not much for presentation, but the chili was the same size as the burrito. The flavor was blissful and warming. You take a bite at first and all you get is a bit of sauce, deep fried tortilla, cheese, and green chili. That is all you need, but no you have to move forwards and taste the beef. The shredded beef must be stewed for many hours as it is very tender, moist, and flavorful. I shall now wrap up this review with this last statement: I will order the Chimi A La Rellana again with two eggs over easy on top next time or as a breakfast plate if possible.

Monday lunch, first time experience.House salsa has a strong taste of store chili powder, chips are Costco like .Red sauce on enchiladas was so bold had to take all the bland rice and mix it into enchiladas to eat it,tried a plate of lime to hide the bold almost scorched taste. Refried beans with a few shreds of cheese, needed rice added to it. We had a $6 lunch special, and wished we had not had to pay, would have been mad had we paid $10.Enchiladas were at least half the size of any other places enchiladas. Will never eat there again.Guest felt exactly the same about her meal, the same item except with mild green sauce, that was not mild but hot.We even thought of adding table sugar to our food to make it less bold.Mexican is my favorite food, this was TV dinner Mexican food.Service, was bad, they brought chips and salsa, and after 5-10 minutes we still had no water,no napkins and no silver ware. How can you eat salsa and chips without napkins. Were they busy,NO,4 tables of people heart of lunch hour, and 3 waiters, now and know why no one was there at lunch time.

I have been here 3 times now trying to figure out if Penasco's should go in our restaurant rotation considering it is right down the street from where we live. The first time we came, I ordered an enchilada and shredded beef taco, beans, and papas. Having had Abuelos Papas, I was super excited and envisioned creamy potatoes with tons of cheesy goodness. The papas at Penascos are terrible I can honestly say. They didn't seem like they had any milk, cream or butter in them so they had a pasty texture and they were just bland. Very disappointing. The enchilada was forgettable. However, the rice was decent and at the time, the taco tasted very good. The chips and salsa were good as well and tasted different from other places salsa. The hub liked it too. My husband, however, was not impressed though when he got a chili relleno and it tasted fishy. He is not a big fan of fish and can tell when something has been contaminated by fish. So we waited awhile before trying it a second time. When we went back the second time, the salsa had changed although it was still really good. I got the two shredded beef tacos with rice and beans and was very satisfied with the meal. The hub got a chimichanga with ground beef and red sauce and he said it was very good. So at that time, we were happy with Penasco's. Cut to a week ago when we decided to go there for dinner. The chips and salsa were decent but not as good as I thought they would be based on other visits. I felt like the salsa was lacking something like spice and cilantro and the chips seemed like they had been sitting around all day. Then we ordered the same meals we ordered during the second visit. My taco's were soggy, not crispy, and the meat in them had no flavor at all. The hubs chimi just tasted off mainly because of the red sauce on top. In any event, everything was just mediocre. We decided that this place is too inconsistent and seems to be ok at best. I have stated this in one of my other reviews: there are other Mexican places we like much more so we will stick to those places instead. Mexican food is supposed to wow the senses and at Penasco's, there was much to be desired. Also, this place never seems to be busy so I wonder how much longer they will be open... I think people wanna like it because its really the only Mexican restaurant in the Copa, however, its just not that good.

  • Kelly B.

I have eaten there 3 times now and will continue to go in the future. During the week they have $2 beers before 6 or 7 PM. The chips and salsa are good not great but the fish tacos are excellent. Enchilladas are good and portions are large. The house beans are better than the refried and the rice is outstanding. If you show up on an afternoon during the week you can get a burrito and Corona for around $10....... Not bad.

Ive been to this place twice while hunting in copa. Both times the food has been lackluster. The chimichanga was plain with no flavoring. The meat is not seasoned and you could get a better burrito at filibertos. Second time the service was lousy. We sat at the bar and after our drink order and food order, we needed mire drinks and chips. The pkace is dead. After 5 mins i found the bartender chatting with staff. When we got our order it was wrong, and when we did get the food it was bland and tasteless. Will not return.

Love this place. I will come back again and again!!! Not a lot of places where the owner will come and greet each guest. She really wants people to feel like they are family here. I know I do. Good relaxing atmosphere, good food and above all great service!

  • Kat C.

The worst Mexican food I've ever had in my life!!! I don't even think it was beef in my beef tacos. It was weird, hard and stringy. The smell and flavor was horrible. My husband had a quesadilla with chicken and the chicken was inedible. The beens and rice had an off taste too. We live in Southern California and our used to eating street tacos with better quality and flavor. Never going back.

You can do a lot better for a lot less money in Maricopa, and that's saying something given how few resteraunts there are in town. The food is ok though over priced. The setting is ok. It tries to be fancy but isn't, still, it's not disgusting or anything. Service is where they fall off the table altogether. The owner is a loudmouth who attacks people with her politics. Her son is a fairly open racist who made totally inappropriate remarks to my table, including insulting an ethnic group that was sitting there. Her kitchen staff has twice gotten in fights/arguments while we are there and feel free to interrupt the already annoying owner at our table.

Bland bland bland. The guacamole is not fresh made- it is obviously from a pouch . Everything needed salt. I ordered the flautas they were very strange not like typical flautas that you would find at a typical Mexican restaurant. Everything needed salt. I can't complain about the service it was perfectly fine . The prices seem too high for the quality and quantity of food . Did I mention everything was bland and needed salt?

Been here 3 times... 1st time: We swore we'd never be back. Plain boring food, but an awful smell permeated the restaurant 2nd time: A year later we returned because we (a) had a 2-4-1 coupon, and (b) we live in Maricopa and its the only full service Mexican restaurant. The food was great as was the service! 3rd time: Same waiter as visit #2, only one other table was occupied. Both of our orders were wrong, would have told the waiter but he never returned until I flagged him down and asked for some salsa - only then did he notice he never delivered chips and salsa - isn't that Mexican restaurant 101? Food was again plain and boring - back to Tacos 'N More!

went here the 1st time we came through looking to buy a home. The worst service and the food was NOT Good!! We ordered tea and cheese enchiladas....how can you mess that up? well try it and you'll find out. the tea the waitress brought barely had any ice in it. he asked for more ice, she brought a glass with ice and proceeded to dump the ice into his tea glass???!!!!! ugh.... the enchiladas took forever (about 20 minutes and were cold and hard.... again....don't waste your time, this is the worst restaurant and worst service we've ever had anywhere!!!!

I would say this place is mediocre at best. It's not bad but for the price its not good. I'm giving 3/5 instead of 2/5 but would give 2.5 if that were possible.

It's a little pricy, but their white jalapeno cream cheese sauce on their chicken chimichanga is to die for. My husband and I go here often! Wish they had bean dip to go with their salsa though (for free)...

When in Maricopa and you get that hankerin' for some Mexican food done right you steer into Penascos. I was able to visit this little gem with Canadian celebrity chef Jonathan Collins (his second visit) and what can I say...? We were pleased. I had grilled fish tacos and a Tecate brewed in Monty., MX. It was well executed and the service was on time and friendly. Nothing out of the ordinary here, just good mexican cuisine done right.

So, for those reviewers that say the food is "meh" I kind of understand. Their standard fare is nothing to comment on yelp about, however their specialties are! My usual order is the Shrimp Tacos doused in the Vodka sauce and my other half has a really hard time not ordering the Las Conchas which consists of heaven on a plate. Their fish tacos are also delish and every time I have ordered the salmon it has been cooked to perfection. Their service can be hit or miss, it really just depends on who you get. When the owner is in she comes around and visits every customer and tries to get a feel for how they can improve and if you are enjoying your meal which is a really nice touch. Happy Hour is great with a numer of decent beers to choose from and I have heard that their margaritas are good (they look pretty, but I have never actually tried one). Overall, a definite staple for my family (probably my 3 year olds favorite restaurant ever) and we think that it is the best in the 'Copa as long as you stick with their specialties.

I have lived in copa since 2007 and I have eaten at this place once and never went back again.... This is in AZ which means we are pretty close to Mexico so naturally there is lots of Mexican food restaurants here (btw-my fav food) and I can't believe that people actually think this place is real "Mexican" ... Gross, I'm white and I know this is a crappy excuse for Mexican food. Save your time and money and go somewhere else for Mexican... Anywhere else is better than this place. Plus the service sucked!

Horrible customer service and terrible salsa ! Isn't that what makes a restaurant ? Took ages to get silverware and that's AFTER we got our dog gone food ! Pass on this restaurant friends ;)

Just OK. As it the only sit down style Mexurant for 30 miles, I've eaten there a few times. The food is so so. It was better before...the quality has dropped off. However, if it's busy they fall apart on service, big time. All the locals know, just keep driving if it's full inside.

After eating there several times we have given up. The food is inconsistant, more often poor. The carne asada tacos are almost tasteless anddthe meat looks like dog food. The most unplesant thing was the owners treatment of her servers. I was embarassed to be sitting there while she bragged about the tight ship she runs. The manner in which she speaks to her servers is rude and unplesant. Not condusive to a plesant experience or an encouragment to return. Your money is better spent.at Tacos & More.

Just moved to Maricopa and decided to stop and eat there today for lunch. Had a friend with us. The food was "ok". I had their fish tacos and literally had to hunt through the bell pepper and onion to see if there was any fish in there, never was sure. It was 87 degrees outside and hot inside as well. Had to ask them to please at least turn on a ceiling fan. Our friend had to go to the restroom while we were there, when she got to the ladies room, the handle was off the door and you couldn't open it or even if you could, there would have been no way to lock it. She told one of the waitresses, the waitress told her to just go in the men's???? When we said we wanted 2 separate checks (me and my husband) and our friend wanted to pay for hers. We were told they couldn't so they would just divide the total between the 3 of us. I had to give them my debit card, my husband had to give them his and our friend had to give them hers????? They actually said they needed 3 separate cards to make it work??? By this time..... we asked for a manager, the service was so ridiculous! We were told, "O I'm sorry, he just left... he went home sick today". ???? The place wasn't clean, service horrid and it was hot as hell in there. So...... If you don't mind bad screwed up service and like mediocre food, this is your place. We will not be back.

I've eaten here twice now, just to be sure of whether I liked it or not. I'm sad to say, eh... Not so much. I tried their carne asada tacos, and the meat was so dry I had to drown it in lime just to get it down. The enchiladas are a little better, but not much--unless you get the cheese. I could live without or without this place, which is such a bummer because it's so close to home for me.

While visiting Maricopa last week, I had a craving for some Fajitas. Penascos seemed to have great curb appeal and quite a crowd outside. Once I arrived at my friends place, I called and placed a carry out order for the steak fajitas. I found the person answering the phone to be somewhat difficult to communicate with. 45 minutes later my fajitas were ready to pick up. When I got back to my friends place and opened up the containers, I was immediately disappointed. The presentation wasn't very appealing. The meat actually look like canned dog-food. Hoping for the best I went ahead and started rolling up a fajita, only to discover the worst tasting Mexican food I had ever put in my mouth, This was by far the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten anywhere. Had I been in the Restaurant, I would have immediately returned the food and promptly left. This Restaurant is offensive and I do not suggest it to anyone.

This place has improved greatly. There are still some issues, but they are very minor. The food is good, the beer specials are great. I wish they would put tv's out on their patio so we could watch sports!

My family and I were traveling from New Mexico to Yuma AZ and so I went online to find a restaurant where we can sit and eat. Penascos came up so I immediately yelp it and saw the reviews. I thought well it worth a shot, and I'll be the judge based on my own experience. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server came over with chips and salsa, we order our food and within minutes our food had arrived. I order the Sonoran Chicken Flautas and they were good!!!! The rice reminded me of my grandmother rice. The flautas were crispy not to hard nor was it to soft but delicious. I also order a side of Guacamole and it was fresh, Our Server always checked up on us which is a plus for me! We all left out plates empty and our tummy's full . The restaurants it self is beautiful. The restroom was clean and they had pictures of Puerto Penasco throughout the restaurant. What I really liked about this place is that it a family owned, I would definitely drive from Yuma AZ for some good Mexican food and great customer service!!!!

The restaurant is clean and open. The food... My wife: "nothing special ", my dad "do you see any fish in my fish tacos?" Then when we left he said 'make sure you write the review as horrible'. As for my meal: the ceviche tostada had a funny flavor I wasn't used to so I couldn't eat it, which in turn made me not want to eat my flautas, and I was really wanting flautas. I did eat one and it was nothing special just shredded beef that was dry in a flour tortilla then deep fried. Will not be returning or recommending.

It's the service. Otherwise shoes would have given the place a 2 star rating. The restaurant is in a strip mall. The food is bland and the portion are small. I had a red chile burrito. I ordered the white rice mixed with vegetables. Corn was the only veggie, unless you count the rice. the burrito was a tiny little thing for which I paid 13.00! Bland Bland Bland.

Not bad.

  • Brian M.

I recommend if you live here or driving thru Maricopa stop by it will be worth your while!!

went here the 1st time we came through looking to buy a home.

    (3)
  • Becca T.

It's a little pricy, but their white jalapeno cream cheese sauce on their chicken chimichanga is to die for. My husband and I go here often! Wish they had bean dip to go with their salsa though (for free)...

  • Lindsay H.

Just....NO.

The Bloody Mary's are delic! The pico de gallo is tiny individual portion, not impressed with it. Love the outside area, misters are cool and wonderful!

Came here 15 minutes before happy hour started and suddenly we were recognized for our order just 2 mins before happy hour. Happy hour wasn't even explained upon request. Food wasn't anything to brag about... Tip: no splitting plates allowed. Apparently they believe they have enough clout for that.

    (2)
  • Charles S.

    (3)
  • Brittany P.

Great breakfast and you have to try the chicken burrito with jalapeño cream sauce. However, the service is definitely lacking and they cannot make a margarita.

  • Natalie R.

Muy bueno!

Penasco's continues to improve over the three years we've lived here. We went there with a coupon for breakfast recently and it was excellent. They have regular fare but don't pass up the spicy entre it was great and as advertised, spicy! I find the staff friendly and helpful

I've eaten here two or three times, and I couldn't tell you what I've eaten; it's pretty unmemorable. It's the only sit down Mexican restaurant in town, so if you demand full service, knock yourself out. Otherwise head over to Tacos N More.

Delicious!!

Been to this restaurant about twice now and both times the food has been mediocre at best. I do not in anyway recommend the rice as it came with an incredibly 'weird' after taste. If planning to dine here I recommend you just save your money and put it towards something else. Nonetheless I still recieved decent service, but definitely not enough to prompt me to make another visit.

Went here with the entire family. We got seated quickly and the then had to wait for some service. The chips and salsa where good, but we where hungry. My enchilada style carna asada burrito was great, but the 'Mexican rice' here is down right horrendous. The bean queso dip was very good. Also the water staines in the ceiling tile was kinda gross.

Service was very sad. I was ignored for 10 minutes when I came in, ignored for 10-15 minutes after being seated and had to find someone in order to pay the bill. The food itself also left a lot to be desired. My chimichongas were over cooked and greasy and my friend's steak burrito was bland. Quite a disappointment, i doubt that I will be returning

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
