As far as bowling alleys in small northern arizona white mountain towns are concerned i'm sure this is probably your best bet. I don't even know how many bowling alleys are sprinkled throughout show low / pinetop / lakeside...what? like two? maybe? idk I'm sure the bowling here is just fine and dandy; but my fate that saturday night was not found amongst the several lanes offered at the Ponderosa; it was not to be an evening of donning a pair of less than fragrant communal shoes and plugging my fingers into some equally greasy holes, rather my evening was spent in the lounge...with a group of colorful mountain folk. My father is a huge fan of mma, and generally anything involving two hulking ignoramuses pulverizing the flesh off one another, and as he informed me- the ponderosa lanes are the only place one can view a ppv title bout for $5 in the area. Pops shelled out the cash and gave me a little extra so i could grab a brew for myself. We strolled inside and up to the lounge where the doormen were taking their fee's and ushering the "worthy" amongst their ranks. I quickly realized I had forgotten my wallet, so after annoying my father with this sudden realization we drove back to the cabin and I grabbed my wallet, we then drove back to the PL and we paid our $5 covers and grabbed some seats. This metal folding chair would come to know me intimately within the ensuing hours we'd be cooped up in the lounge replete with stinky patrons, greasy food, and little to no air circulation, my poor father having to go outside just to take a breather between every fight, i saved our seats and endured the stench of the masses. I ordered a pitcher of budweiser for $5 and regretted it all weekend. After several hours, and suffering the obnoxious drunken ramblings of some random idiot man child desperate for attention, an ornery brosef sarcastically complimenting my hair while i waited for a bathroom stall, and an irate bartenders hateful glances due to my $0 tip, we were finally able to leave. and though we may've left, i fear the ponderosa lane will never truly leave, it's legacy and it's stench will live on for multitudes of generations to come.
