Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Spent this last week in Green Valley on Vacation. Had two of the best meals on our trip at Los Agaves. First night we walked in greeted with warm friendly smiles. We were shown to our seats like any other restaurant. "WARNING" Now in no way shape or form does what I'm going to say next reflect on the restaurant, or their staff. But when we walked in to the dinning room it almost went silent and all eyes were on us. Now I know what your thinking and stop thinking it. It was me my wife and our kids....we were the only customers in the place under the age of I would say probably 60. If you don't know Green Valley is a retirement community. And Los Agaves is a local hang out for senior citizens...hence when my young family walked in it was almost as if us young people had invaded their club house. I went to use the rest room and when I came back to the table a couple in a booth saw me coming and scooted about three inches deeper in to their booth as if I was going to do something to them. The 2nd night we went in we went with two grey haired retired people and didn't get a second look. So if your not retired and have lots of gray expect to get some looks unless your brought in to the inner circle by one of the members of the club. Now to the part that makes the above insignificant in the big picture of what is Lo Agaves. First the meal started off like any other at a Mexican restaurant with chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and warm the salsa had good flavor but had no heat at all. I was a little disappointed with this at first but then remembered who the majority of their cliental are. Any good restaurant caters to the pallet of their base. That night my kids had the daily special "enchilada plate". I had a couple of bites just to taste for scientific purposes of course. They were excellent can't go wrong with enchiladas. My wife had the chicken Fajitas.... again another hit. And I had what I judge all Mexican restaurants Chili Relleno and Tamale. Now all Chili rellenos are different some are only stuffed with cheese some are stuffed with meat and cheese. (my favorite way).. The Rellenos here are only stuffed with cheese. they are probably one of the best ever cheese only. Most of the time the pepper is over cooked and mushy. This one is cooked perfect. The tamale was the perfect mix of meat and masa. I would have had it the second night except we went for Saturday night special BBQ ribs. I never would have thought BBQ ribs at a Mexican place. Oh boy was I wrong. With your ribs you get choice of baked potato, fires or onion rings. I had the onion rings and my daughter had the fries. What can I say about the onion wrings they were spectacular.. perfectly battered perfectly fried delicious. The fires were seasoned crispy wedges of goodness. And the ribs were great. Fallin off the bone tender. I'm not normally a wet rib kind of guy but these had a good sauce on it not too sweet not to tangy. Very tasty. My wife had the chicken Fajitas again they were that good the first time we were in. The food was great but far above and beyond was the service. I have been in very few places where I have had better service than here. The people that work here are awesome. The first night we went if it were not for the staff this review my only be the first paragraph. Our server was professional super polite. We wanted for nothing. She was always there at just the right time and very attentive but not so attentive that it became obnoxious. the 2nd night we were there was a work shop on what great service should be like. I believe our waiter was the owner. WOW this guy is amazing. The way he interacted with us you could tell that his only mission was to make sure we didn't just have a good meal but an outstanding experience. I could also tell by the way he interacted with the other staff that this guy is something special in the service department. I asked him before we got our meal if they had any "real salsa" and real salsa = hot. He said sure no problem and brought out a bowl of the "good stuff". So if you want it spicy you have to ask for it no big deal. I can not say enough good things about the people who work here. Awesome amazing experience both nights. Next time I'm in the Tucson or Green valley area I will be coming here for dinner. And I highly recommend that you do also.

I must say the great thing about Los Agaves is their consistently good fare. Not outstanding but always good. I have been coming here for years so I can say their steady menu served up hot and regular is their strong point. Their breakfast is the best!

Just there for our Christmas party. Had over 50 people. We were all waited on in a timely manner. Service was great. Our meals were good too. I would highly recommend this to any one. They were very accommodating for our big party. We all had a great time. Thank Los Agaves for making our Dinner a special time. CS/GV

I like the food and LOVE LOVE LOVE the Mango Cake. I dropped a star because they nickel and dime you to death... They charge for chip refills!! and they charge $2 if you share a meal with your friend!! Insane!! I also dropped a star because a bean and cheese burro enchilada style ( no meat) with sour cream, lettuce and tomato costs more than a meat burro by $4.00!! Let's just post a note on the menu and tell vegetarians they are not wanted... sheesh!

It's pretty good. I can't say I was overly wowed. I'm impressed by the presence of this place remotely far from Tucson. The initial hostess took a while to pay attention and seat my dad and I. However, our waitress seemed much more interactive and paid good attention to us. A couple of bowls of chips and salsa (apparently you need to ask for the hot salsa, if you want it). I ordered a dish that I can't quite remember the name of - it was a Mexican lasagna according to the menu, with ground beef and cheese. It was good. Not great. A little bland. I dumped some of the salsa in (wish it had been hot) for more flavor. There was a little tiny bed of lettuce and some olives near it. I wasn't overly excited but it was filling. My dad had a chimichanga and seemed to really like it. For a lunch, it was about $8-10 a plate, so.. not cheap. But food came out fast, seemed like 5-10 minutes after ordering. I'd try it again and sample other dishes.

Surprisingly good and authentic Ariz-Mex food, way out in the middle of nowhere. I had a burro platter, ~$9, which included a giant bean and cheese burrito, and a variety of vegetarian sides. I was quite pleased overall, because the guacamole was quite good, they serve both spicy and mild salsa with their all-you-can-eat chip bowls, and nothing was too salty. For all you health nuts in the Tucson area, it's apparently quite acceptable (my triathlete uncle raved about the healthy selections on the menu). I wasn't really studying my uncle's meal as he devoured it, but it looked like a giant slab of chicken surrounded by... other healthy things and a tortilla. Portions are large, prices reasonable, and ambiance very down-home and cute. Service was good, we were seated promptly and our food was served quickly, maybe 20 minutes after our 5-person table ordered (though we were eating at 2pm... had to make the early early bird special). The boy and I had just enough time to eat a basket of chips and listen to my dad and his brother tell a stream of bad jokes while kicking each other under the table because WHY WERE WE GOING TO LUNCH WITH MY FAMILY AGAIN WHY WHY WHY OH LOOK BURRITOS... ok that's why. I'd definitely go to Los Agaves again; just wish it weren't 3 hours from Phoenix.

Great food and atmosphere. Please note that it's a retirement place, so you will find mostly old people. The food is not that cheap but it's good

Let's be clear: The regular clientele for this place are the denizens of the neighboring retirement mecca of Green Valley. There I said it. I met some girlfriends here for lunch and got the chicken soup. It was awesome, but familiar. I sort of think the same family that owns La Placita in town owns this one. The chicken soup had rice, shredded chicken and big chunks if veggies. I got a small bowl so the tortilla on the side was extra. I also took a carne asada burrito plate home with me and it was okay -very boring. I would prefer a carne asada burrito from Rigoberto's. The service was fine and the promptness if the food was fine, too. All things considered, the menu and ingredients are geared entirely toward the retirement demographic. It is very mild. No seasonings and super gringo-fied. If you're in town visiting grams for the afternoon, this place fits the bill. It's like Coco's and El Torito had a baby. If you find that you prefer spicier fare, more authentic flare or a real "Southwestern" experience then this is not your place. Try: Manuel's, Wisdom's or even the taco shop Rigoberto's instead.

Retraction of last review: wings are back to normal - and TNT service an all time high! Sunday's at Los Agaves - love it!

It wss ok at best. We ordered the fajitas...no cheese, no sour cream, the veggies were not cooked all the way. Husband had the all you can eat fish fry. The cod was breaded in a corn meal batter...it was more like a catfish instead of cod. Margaritas was nothing to talk about...poured the mix right out of a bottle it seemed.

Whatever issues may have been occurring here in the past as noted by previous posters appear to have been resolved. The decor is SW chic and relaxed. The staff were helpful and attentive. Our party of four enjoyed prompt courteous service and the meals were well prepared and delicious. I had the liver rancheros and was very satisfied. No skimping on portion size either. You could float a boat in the margarita glass! I rate it a 4.5 and look forward to making Los Agaves a regular stop.

The previous couple of reviews were SO negative, we went elsewhere for dinner on our wedding anniversary, in spite of having had good service and good food on our past visits. Checking in a day later with our immediate neighbors, we got nothing but 'thumbs up' for Los Agaves. Since Yelp! doesn't allow businesses to 'coerce' changes to reviews, we each have to decide which ones to 'filter out'--and for us, that now includes the recent 1-star ones!

The Pollo con Mole was delicious, and the flour tortillas were very obviously fresh made in house. Good strong margaritas as well.

Horrible service to match the horrible food. I had been there once before over a year ago and it was fair at best, so didnt mind stopping in to take my mother to lunch. That place has gone down hill. Over priced and the food was horrible , even my iced tead tasted like it was made from dirty water or it may have been the ice cubes . We were charged extra for avacado for a dish that stated on the menu "served with avacado"no where mentioning the extra fee , when we asked the server she said it was a mistake on the menu so they cant remove the extra fee. I also asked what my food would be served with and when it came , it was nothing like listed.annoyed we asked for a manager our server said she'd get her then walked off never returnig. the server at the next table just kept lauging about the entire thing, and when comfronted she had told us shes lauging because our server , who still hadnt returned was the manager and wasnt coming back. What a disgusting place to eat , never going back

The food is good but the service is awful. It has steadly gone way down hill in the past year. Will not be back

I don't understand the negative reviews. The service was quick, cheerful and professional . The food was a combination of Ariziona /Mex and authentic Mexican. The fish selections were excellent. Green Valley's best Mexican by far!

Visited this place on a slow Sunday but received horrible service. We waited ten minutes to get seated because there was no one at the hostess's center. Once seated it took fifteen minutes to order and when I asked for more salsa it took another fifteen minutes. At this point my food was cold and glasses empty. For a place with little customers, service was very slow! Never going back which is unfortunate because it is one of a few Mexican restaurants in the area.

Lukewarm tortilla chips, bland salsa, bland uninspired entree. Homemade tortilla, but too big and little stale. Felt like this place can do a lot better but the local retirement clientele demands mediocre bland Americanized Mexican food. Service didn't seem to happy to be there. I think I got about a half cup of beans and a half cup of rice on my entree, spread thinly across the plate. Prices fairly low.

Great food! Don't miss the Saturday night rib special!

Having a coupon for 1/2 off the 2nd entrée, we decided to try Los Agaves for lunch. While the food was good, the service left A LOT to be desired. Interior: while it was clean, the tables had thin paper placements that quickly became soggy from the drinks condensation. There was no music playing either, therefore not much atmosphere. Chips & Salsa. Chips were somewhat old. While the salsa was tasty it lacked any heat. Entrees: we had the red pork ($8), and beef enchiladas ($7) - both dishes were very good! The accompanying refried beans, while flavorful, were too runny. The rice was good. Service was poor: our waiter spoke very little English - this caused some consternation at checkout, as we were told some items were on special, while they really were not. When we mentioned this to the cashier - she just shrugged and said he was wrong! We also waited a long time for our check, so we finally headed to the checkout counter - only to see our waiter sitting down eating his lunch! With La Placita & Manuel's being co close by, we won't be back to Los Agaves

been to los agaves several times previously but am now crossing them off because of a very disturbing experience with them giving away our reservation and then lying saying they called our name 3 times while we waited 1/2 hour for a table. then totally mediocre food. no apology. no way to run a business.

Judy, the bartender is very slow. I ordered a second drink and even though it was slow in the bar , she let me sit there for about 15 minutes. Not the first time she's made me wait a long time. :-(

The margaritas on the rocks are killer; served chilled with a little ice and you are definitely getting your money's worth. Like the salsa and warm chips and still going through the menu so I'll report back.
