Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Despite all the neon beer signs in the windows this place does not have a bar and it has a very very limited drink menu. Stopped in after seeing the sign that read "best margaritas in town", and when the waitress found out we only wanted drinks we were promptly treated like lepers!! My companion didn't even get the drink she ordered. After this experience I don't plan on going back.

Best mexican food In town! Food is delicious the chips and salsa are great. The chile rellenos, chile verde carne asada pollo asado and other plates that I have tried are excellent. Everyone has their own taste when it comes to mexican food. It only counts when you try it yourself and have your own opinion about it. I guarantee you that you won't be disappointed.

I came to this small town to take care of an assignment. Upon completing the job I passed by this small restaurant on a Sunday morning. They were having the brunch buffet from 10am-2pm. I stayed all 4 hours and ate every selection they had. This place is an authentic family own restaurant. You can hear the cook singing along to Mexican music in the back. The only thing better than the cook's singing is the food.

Best Mexican food I have had in a long time. Family vacation stopped by on the way back to Sedona but I would make a special trip after eating here. All the food had home made taste. I had the combo with Chile relleno, beef chimichanga, and chicken enchilada. Family had other dishes such as Chile Coronado and carne asada. The portions were so large we all took a box for later.

Stopped here because of Yelp reviews. Excellent food! We were here on a Sunday and they have a brunch buffet that was fresh and delicious. Very reasonably priced too.

It is indeed hard to find good Mexican food once you leave Southern Arizona but El Toreo is pretty doggone good food. I ordered their Star Special and got to choose my 2 entrees and it was cheese enchilada and bean tostada to fit my veggie fix. It was all very tasty. I loved the contrasting temperatures of the food: What needed to be hot was hot and the salad with guacamole needed to be cool and it was. It's plain and doesn't have a festive atmosphere like Plaza Bonita down the road but I honestly think the food is much better here. Nothing a little bright paint can't fix. I look forward to eating here again when visiting Cottonwood.

I was in Cottonwood and we wanted Mexican food. I opened Yelp, and it told me to go to El Toreo. We went in and it wasn't packed at all. We ordered drinks and they came quickly, but then the waiter disappeared. Maybe 15 minutes later we waved him down, and we ordered lots of yummy food that came quickly. My kid got the nachos & they rocked. I ordered the Colorado... it was a enough for days and so yummy. Go there.

I found this place via Yelp; and as usual I was not steered wrong. Who would've thought I could satisfy my Mexican food craving in a place like Cottonwood. I went around noon on a Friday and the place was empty but throughout my meal people started to slowly trickle in. Upon walking in I won't lie there was a weird off putting smell but I went on to order anyway and I'm glad I did. I had the Carne Colorado which super moist and flavorful it was accompanied with smooth refried beans and Spanish rice. It was super huge portion for a little under $9 bucks! I also ordered the Horchata which was by far the most creamiest Horchata I have ever had ( I hate a gritty Horchata!). Next time I come here I'll just eat on the patio to avoid the smell. Oh yeah BTW this place serves a killer free chips and salsa!

I am so glad we didn't eat dinner in Sedona this place is awesome. The wife had the Chicken Chimichanga, which was stuffed with chicken and great flavor. I had the Chicken Fajitas, which were awesome. With a couple drinks all for $27 what a steal.

We tried El Toro based on the reviews. Our dinner was excellent. The staff was friendly and efficient and the price was reasonable. The only improvement I could suggest is that they move the restaurant to my home town.
(5)John F.
Tasty food (my wife had camerones / shrimp, I had fried pulled pork, both dishes were excellent), the prices were very reasonable and the portions were large. The service was quick, courteous and helpful. Highly recommend.

Growing up in San Diego, CA, I was used to good to excellent Mexican food and good to excellent Mexican restaurants. Since moving to Sedona, I've had a problem with finding even decent Mexican food. I've tried several and wouldn't go back to any of them. So imagine how happy I was when I found El Toreo. I dined by myself and had a combo - chicken taco, cheese enchilada, rice and beans and everything was tasty and served hot. The salsa and chips were fresh and tasty. The service was very good. I'll look forward to eating there again with my wife in the near future.

We never would have gone to El Toreo if not for Yelp. Even with less than 10 reviews we were willing to give it a shot when we found ourselves in the mood for Mexican on vacation and we were happy with did. You will be sold by the time you finish you first chip with salsa and from then on you can't go wrong with a full menu of tasty options. I went for the taco plate with steak and although I filled up on the amazing chips and salsa I was very impressed with the rest of the food. The rest of the people I was with were happy with their choices and overall we all thought it was a great value for some great food. If you ever find yourself in the area you won't go wrong with El Toreo, just make sure to leave a review so more people can find out about this place.

Very friendly and cozy place. Good tequila selection. Chile Colorado was beautiful dark red and tasty, chicken mole bland and tasteless. Large servings, we took leftovers home and had a meal the following night.

Our new favorite for mexican food in cottonwood. Friendly staff, best chips and salsa. Waiter recommended some dishes for us and it was delicious!
(5)Cindy L.
Stopped by for lunch. Was very surprised by the food. Very tasty. We had chicken enchilada with beans and rice and giant prawns. For desert we had Flan. It was a bit different then we had anywhere else. It was dense. The service was A+.
(4)Brenda B.
Excellent lunch. The chicken enchilada was huge and such a great value at 3.50. My husband ordered the steak dish. It was sliced really thin but very tender and full of flavor. We will be back for sure
(5)Leslie B.
Yep! Just like before! Wonderful lunch and great service!
(5)Brandon L.
We went there and we're sitting for at least 20 minutes and wasn't asked for drinks. We finally got our drinks and placed our order. After 50 minutes of waiting we finally got our food but it wasn't great at all. Do not come here!

Saw this place on the way up to Sedona to go 4 wheeling. Decided to try it on the way back and didn't regret a thing. The drinks were strong and good. The food was delicious and the service was fast. I particularly liked their salsa. I definitely recommend people to stop here if you are in the area.

Best authentic Mexican food around the Verde Valley. Family owned business. Friendly staff, very clean. Our favorite "go to" restaurant in Cottonwood.
(5)Nancy J.
They have the most amazing chicken tacos and grilled chicken tostada anywhere. Their Margaritas are the best. Friendly staff and great service. Thumbs up

Driving into town and pulled up yelp! This Mexican food restaurant had 4 stars and a bunch of reviews! Sooooooo good! Try the fajitas amazing! Great place I highly recommend it!

We love the Sunday brunch buffet. Good food, all you can eat with champagne for 10.00. Best value in the area.

Wow! I hate Sedona's tourist locations to eat, they are always over priced and poor service. Lets just say when I go hiking in sedona, I will NEVER eat there again after going here! The chips and salsa were absolutely amazing! I got the steak fajitas and they were to die for. Its pretty awesome how they serve them too. Im definitely looking forward to all our hikes in sedona, so we can eat here again in cottonwood! Every one needs to eat here instead of that dumb oxcana restaurant in Sedona.

Our party of 10 enjoyed celebrating my grandpa's 84th Birthday here on Wednesday night. The chips & salsa were good (and fresh), the service was awesome and the food was very reasonably priced. We all ordered different items and every single person was satisfied...including our 5-year old twins. ;) Why only four stars: the rice was BAD...the veggies were insanely dehydrated and it was dry. Also, the interior could use some updating but it was clean and homey.

Good food and service. Chile rilleno was excellent.

After reading all of these 4 and 5 star Yelp reviews, we were excited to try this place on an excursion over to Cottonwood. As a result of these high expectations, we were pretty disappointed with the end product. The prices were a little high, but not excessive. Service was OK, but not always on-top of things. Atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. Food was fairly generous in portion-size, but very light on flavor. For an order of chicken fajitas, chile verde plate, a kids meal (w/juice), and 2 sodas, it cost $33. This is about what you would pay for similar items over at Plaza Bonita, but no one enjoyed their meal very much here at El Toreo, as opposed to Plaza where we almost always have excellent food (The enchiladas especially stood out as being awful). It was nice that the price of a dinner plate included either a green salad or Albondigas soup... but just as the rest of the meal was, the soup was very lackluster. Again, it's not that things were inedible at El Toreo... just nothing very good. We found that both the pork and the chicken had very little seasoning/flavor of any kind, and that was a real disappointment to us. We noted that the clientele of the establishment was very elderly and very Caucasian... which perhaps speaks to the fact that the food was very bland and without dynamic flavors.

Being from L.A. it has been VERY hard to find Mexican Food that is completely satisfying, well this is about as close as I'm going to get. I've hit all the Mexican Restaurants in Cottonwood and El Toreo is THE BEST. I started out with awesome chips and salsa with guacamole, followed by a taco/enchilada combo with rice and beans.I also tried the albondigas which was great too. Everything was VERY tasty without leaving me feeling full. Everything about this place reminds me of the Mexican joints I used to hit in L.A. The outdoor seating will be awesome when the weather cools down! This is now my place for Mexican food when I'm in The Verde Valley.

My wife and I had an early dinner at El Toreo on a Sunday afternoon. They were serving a small buffet brunch at the time but we opted for the menu. I ordered a combination plate with rice, beans, chimichanga and a chili relleno. As an appetizer we ordered a simple quesidilla. The accompanying chips were decent and the salsa, although not remarkable, was OK. The quesedilla was very good and very filling; two flour tortillas with an abundance of queso. I ordered a machaca filled chimi and found it to be unremarkable and very bland. The chili relleno was adequate but not remarkable either. The rice was typical as were the beans. I didn't really see anything out of the ordinary here except the prices were a bit high considering the cuisine and physical surrondings. It was just an average restaurant. I probably won't return, simply because I know of better, less expensive mexican food restaurants... especially here in Arizona.

Best Mexican food for miles around. Not your usual American faux border stuff but many dishes you would find south of the border. Good service and nice atmosphere.
