Four of us ate here 12-9-2012. I won't go into each specific meal however I'll tell you about a few items. Chicken Fried Steak appeared to be a generous portion until it was cut into. They were almost entirely breading with a small tough piece of meat in both dinners. There was not enough gravy in the entire café to make this stuff edible. Macaroni and cheese was so over cooked it was mush. The Turnip Greens had suffered the same fate. The Cole Slaw was tasteless and pasty. Mashed potatoes contain the peel. Really? They taste as if they contain chopped confetti. The Shepherd's Pie consists of the awful mashed potatoes and something resembling meatloaf. The waitress overheard our conversation and sent a management type to our table. He explained that company headquarters dictates how things are prepared and that's the way it is. No apologies. I am personally baffled by good reviews for this place. I will not eat here again even if the food is free. If this is a representation of southern food I'd think everyone south of the Mason/Dixon Line would have starved to death years ago. I'll give it a one because I can't give it a zero.

Went to the Dixie tonight. In the area on business with the family and thought based on the few other reviewers, might not be to bad for a quick bite. The lack of cars in the parking lot should have been my clue. I'm not sure how the other reviewers got their experience because our food pretty much amounted to simple, warmed up microwave food. Tasteless drabble really. Service was fine but not impressive enough to give a better rating. I feel bad for this place really. You walk in and it seems kind of cowboyish kind of wooden feel. Oh well, live and learn. I will say this however, the dinner roles were awesome. I had 3 1/2 to end things on a good note.

This is a great spot for family dining or a light lunch option. Of course you can go for the all-out country fried menu items but even then the portions are reasonable and won't leave you stuffed. The food: - My favorite is the black eyed pea salad. Get it as 1 of your 2 sides and eat it first. - The rolls/muffins -- these is where the non-dessert decadence comes in. Served warm with ample butter, they are sure to induce a carb coma if you over indulge. - My wife's favorite Chicken Tender Salad is a great balance between fresh and fried. Served in a large bowl with plenty of fresh veg, egg and cheese. Ask for 2 dressings on the side (ranch/honey mustard). The service: - Service is friendly and prompt. You will come to expect the same faces when you visit. I find it a welcome change from the server turnover treadmill in most local restaurants. They clearly treat their people well enough to stay. - Drink refills are generous and to-go cups are encouraged. - For special service visit the Polar Dessert Bar with the kids or after a movie. The crowd: - It can get busy during weekday lunch but the wait is never more than a few minutes. Location: - Situated on restaurant row, you will find that it is easy to get in, get your meal and be on your way without a hassle. This is a no brainer stop for me when I want fresh food, fast.

I'm surprised no one has reviewed the Dixie Cafe. I ate lunch here today since it was close to the hotel. They have an extensive menu of southern staples such as chicken fried steak, meat loaf, etc. and 20 some vegetables. I was in the mood for chicken fried chicken and was pleased to see the "value plates" which had smaller portions. Along with the CFC, I had mashed potatoes, red beans and rice, and a piece of jalapeno cornbread. My only complaint was that the potatoes weren't very hot, but the chicken and red beans/rice were still very hot when I was served. Service was good, food good, biggish place but not too crowded, I would return.

I can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to a total chain restaurant, but for southern soul food Dixie Cafe is tops. I've been eating here since the Black Eyed Pea in Little Rock changed over (maybe the early 90s?) and whenever I came back to visit from my decade of living on the west coast, Dixie was a top spot for southern food. Good catfish, chicken fried steak, three-bean salad, mac and cheese, fried okra, mashed potatoes blacked eye peas, etc. If you're feeling the need for something a little lighter, the blackened catfish is also excellent. The rolls and jalapeno cornbread are also awesome. Full disclosure, I did work at the LR Dixie for like a month in 1998, so I have a little inside info, what really stuck with me was how when a tray of rolls came out of the oven, there was a vat of liquid butter and with a paintbrush in it that you used to brush a layer across the rolls. That is why they are so damn good. Also, Dixie wins points for always serving a big-ass glass of whatever it is that you are drinking (for me, water). I hate small glasses of water. Also, when I am in the south for new years, we always come here new years day because they give you a free side of black eyed peas (for good luck!). The whole kitsch of their decor is really hokey, but I am too busy guzzling my big-ass water and wolfing down turnip greens to care too much. Also, for the average appetite, the "light plates" (maybe called "value plates"?) are plenty.

So, Dixie Cafe. I went into this restaurant with extreme reluctance-- in other words, I was not excited to try it. I assumed it would have that old, dirty diner feel that I'm not a fan of. But, when we entered I was pleasantly surprised! Although some of the other Yelpers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the interior decorating, I personally didn't have a problem with it. We were seated immediately, and our server, Pam, took our drink orders right away as well. The menu is mainly strong southern cuisine-- you know, those hearty dishes that put you to sleep after you eat them. Sticking with that fact (I'm a northerner, so southern style food is still new to me), I chose shepherds pie with a side of red beans and rice and mac and cheese. So this is where the negative part of my review starts, beginning with the excessive wait time. This restaurant loses two stars from me solely on the ridiculous wait for our food, and the jalapeño cornbread that was promised, but never arrived. Also, alerting us that they were out of baked potatoes after an already 40 minute wait was not ideal either. To end on a positive note, though, the food that we did receive (sans the baked potato that we were still charged for), was very good. It was all homemade cuisine and I throughly enjoyed it. My suggestions would be that the restaurant needs to get more help to alleviate the stress on the wait staff, but other then that, the food is worth the trip.

This place is where old 70s style decor and furniture comes to die! None of the food was fresh except for the rolls, which were the only good thing about our visit. All of our food was bland and obviously just heated up. I ordered a chicken tender salad and I had actual frozen pieces of egg just thrown on top of the salad....gross. The service was slower than dirt and the bathrooms were almost as disgusting as the food. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

This would be a great family restaurant; something for almost everyone. I was surprised by the HUGE portion of chicken strips in the appetizer (comes with gravy or BBQ sauce by request). My husband's burger was really good. The mini-dessert (chocolate) was disappointing, but that's okay. We ate cheaply and it was filling. The service was good as well.

Very friendly service and good comfort food. This was the first place we had a family dinner the night we pulled into town. I've been back once since then (since it's close to the hotel). The place is a good value. I split the chicken fried chicken dinner with my daughter and we both really liked it. My wife and son were a bit disappointed with their Caesar salads but if I'm going to a place called The Dixie Cafe it's for chicken fried something, not a salad. On the second visit I tried the chicken and dumplings. They were good (but I still prefer Cracker Barrel's).

Unfortunately, this place was not a good choice for "trying something new." As a food lover & healthy eating enthusiast it is very rare that I cannot find anything I like about my dining experience but in this case it's true. Although the staff was very polite & courteous to our dissatisfaction, the food was gross. Had absolutely no flavor so we declined their offer to substitute meals or the free desert offer. Our order consisted of catfish which at full size was very small for an adult portion. And the Monterey chicken which was covered in some canned meat that was suppose to be bacon.Highly doubtful.
