The catfish is excellent. The pickled green tomatoes are just as good as everybody says. I love the hushpuppies. The french fries are pretty lame. Substitute a baked potato with extra sour cream. Also, ask for slices of raw onion to eat along with the catfish. Get there a lttle early for lunch or dinner to avoid the rush. When they're packed, the volume of fish that they have to fry drops the temperature of the oil, and the fish doesn't come out as light and crispy as it should.

Easily the best catfish I've ever had. And the hushpuppies were great too. Friendly people, fast service, super low prices. I wish it wasn't so far away from me. I'd go for lunch every day.

Something special! Great catfish plate in a great location. I drive up to Mammoth Springs from Hardy when visiting my Grandmother, we love the place.

Fred's is either really good or average heading to poor. Our drive over is 45 miles, so when we eat there and it's like last Sat. - it's always a long time before we want to go back. Sat. our fish dinners (3) were not good. Fish had hardly any white meat, It was mostly dark skin & fried into crispy nothing. My baked potato was warm - only warm. The hush puppies were barely warm, definitely not hot. Overall, Sat. evening was a long drive hoping for a really good supper that we know Fred's can serve as we've experienced many! Sadly, we left disappointed knowing it will be a long time until we give them another chance. (We've been playing this inconsistent 'guessing game" for over 15 years. This is the first time I've written a review about Fred's, but would love to always know it will be worth the $ and the drive.

The fried catfish was really good! My in laws got the large fish order and had plenty of leftovers. It came with hush puppies, coleslaw, pickled tomato(taste like bread&butter) and 9 pieces of catfish and fries. Service was fast and specials are good sized. I got special $8 4 pieces of fish hush puppies fries and coleslaw. Not far walk to spring either.

Some of the best fried fish and hush puppies you can find. The batter on the fried chicken fingers is a bit thick but the fried shrimp and clams were excellent. They also have good coleslaw and the sweet pickled tomatoes are extremely good.

Had the lunch special (Monday) which was 4 pieces of fish, cole slaw, fries and hush puppies $8.95 and worth every penny. We love fried fish but normally not anyone but ours so to like the fish is a big compliment. We would eat here again in a heartbeat. If I had one negative thing to say it's that they only had one waitress busting her rump to get the whole place taken care of so service a little slow but food comes out relatively fast.

Hands down the best fish you can get 50 miles of the Arkansas-Missouri state line. It's just your typical, cramped fish house. Tables have the obligatory advertisements embedded in them, and the service is quick and courteous. I've never felt rushed or snubbed or unpleasant when eating here. The hush puppies are not the best I've ever had, but still very good and go great with the local and fresh catfish made to perfection. It will always be hot, tender, and juicy. One thing to note is there is practically zero cell service in the joint, so don't be surprised when you miss a few texts... but really, you won't have time to check your phone because you'll be too lost in the delicious tastes of Ozark catfish.

I've been to town several times and finally got to eat at Fred's. Interior was redecorated from an old downtown store. I try to be a healthy eater, so I tried to grilled fish plate. It was the bet grilled fish I have ever had. Started off with hush puppies and pickled tomatoes. I could have made a meal of that but the fish and baked potato were perfect. Cocktail sauce and tarter sauce was ok. Service was excellent (and entertaining). I recommend this place!

I'll give this a 3 star A-OK rating. Sign on the door advertises "Best Catfish in the _________", can't remember exactly. I ordered the 5 piece catfish dinner. The catfish was good, but I've had better at several other places. I liked the slaw and pickled tomatoes. Hush puppies were just OK for my taste. The fries were undercooked. Service was friendly. Prices were moderate. I'd probably go back.

Being an old Southern Geezer, I've eaten a lot of catfish. I was a little put off when we walked into Fred's, because I certainly wasn't greeted with a smile. However, after some encouragement, we were able to get a little cheerfulness out of the waitress who seated us. We ordered the "all you can eat" catfish with trimmings (pickled green tomatoes, slaw, hush puppies, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce). The trimmings arrived first, and I dived in. I thoroughly enjoyed the hush puppies and green tomatoes. They were prepared just right for me. Shortly, our main dishes arrived, platters of catfish, heaped over french fries and more hush puppies. We found the catfish to be well prepared and very good. It was hot, not too much corn meal breading, was crispy on the outside, and moist, tender and flavorful on the inside. Again, the hush puppies seemed to melt in your mouth. I didn't care for the french fries, and ate only a couple. They were too soft, and bland. The tartar sauce and bottled hot sauce were nice accompaniments. We bought five jars of the pickled green tomatoes on our way out.

Catfish was just too fishy for my tastes but was light and cooked well. The sides were good and the service was decent but not fast.
