Everything everyone else says is true, slow service, poor service, scarce service. Mediocre food and lousy staff. Only here because I'm at a show upstairs and wanted to limit travel for food. DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. Very disappointed all the way around.

Maybe being from Texas im spoiled by Tex-Mex and Mexican food so I'm biased. But this place was horrible. For starters our server was just downright snotty and mean. I came in with three guy friends while we were in town working. We decided to stop in here to grab dinner. After waiting a good 20 minutes we had to flag someone down to ask for waters and menus. The waitress we flagged down seemed overly annoyed that we asked for those two items. When our waitress came by she acted as if we were a burden to want to order food. It was 7:30 on a Saturday and the place had only 4 tables not including ours. If it was busy I would have understood but it wasn't. The menu only has about 10-12 items on it so you're very limited. I ordered the taco salad for my meal. The menu said it ONLY came with beef. I asked if I could sub chicken and the waitress said she would try. Little did I know, apparently chicken is more expensive than beef in Arkansas. I was charged $2 extra for chicken instead of beef. The salad itself was fine but nothing I would crave or really want to order again. Halfway through our meal I started to feel like something was dripping on me. Yup! The pipe above our table had started to drip and was getting all over me and my friend next to me. We mentioned it to the waitress and her exact response was "oh you can move the table forward more if you don't want to get wet." You have got to be kidding me?!? That was the end of it for me. I just wanted to get out. Overall I would never return. A tiny menu with barely average food and horrible service is not a place I care to come back to.

Ordered vegetarian fajitas and vegetarian nachos. Didn't expect squash and zucchini on Mexican food. The chips from the nachos were super soggy and had to use the chips from the basket to eat them. The food was greasy and bland. No Mexican spices at all. The salsa tasted like it was made from canned stewed tomatoes didn't taste fresh at all. The service was mediocre but understandably so for how understaffed they were. Great location and atmosphere, too bad the food sucks.

Got to Juanita's about 9pm Saturday night and there was only a handful of people there. We had a couple of drinks on the patio, which is a very nice, cozy spot but it just wasn't happening. I don't know if they need drink specials or a band outside but being down on the end of the street...they need something that makes you want to come down. I'll go back again but then I'm weird that way

I had one of the worst experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. If you are not a restaurant then don't advertise that you are. You can be a bar w/apps if you like. But, if you are just that then the drinks and apps need to be real! This place is total crap. It is really sad b/c it is a pretty cool looking restaurant. Exposed brick, nice stage. But the service was horrible, manager didn't know how to address a complaint at all!, food wasn't edible, 11/2 hour ticket time with little customers on a Friday night(maybe 10), watered down drinks-it honestly tasted like they threw house tequila, triple sec with some ice and topped w/water! It took 35 minutes to get a drink. After 25 minutes I asked if we could at least get waters. 35 minutes for cheese dip that was lumpy, gooey and gross! I will say the chips and salsa were good but they were free. Chicken fajitas were so burned that I couldn't eat them, beans had been sitting on expo line for probably 1 1/2 hours that it took to get the food out! We couldn't get our check and many other things went wrong. No one could ever check us out!!! So, someone decided to make us pay for drinks and went home hungry, disappointed and sad. I wanted to help them soooooo much but it seemed as if they couldn't even get it together to ask for help from another restaurant 2 help w/computer or tech support. It was absolutely insane!!! I honestly have never been this disappointed in any fast food, restaurant, bar, fine dining, etc!!! If computer is down why can't you do hand tickets old school? If the server sucks why doesn't mgr fire him? If the food is awful why didn't they try to recook or do a check back on food? If the drinks are terrible why isn't the bartender getting held accountable and why can't they make a great Top Shelf Margarita? It's a TexMex Restaurant! I didn't go to a sushi bar asking for a margarita! Just a total disappointment! We are from out of town and really wanted to have a great time! After 3 hours and most of us not eating and still having to pay for our watery gross drinks out of the cheapest triple sec at Top Shelf prices we were running to the shuttle for our sweet little hotel rooms.

Juanitas has always been a decent experience but this time it was rough. Food took about 45 minutes because the cook got confused with our order, there were 5 of us, and the rice was rock hard and really dry. We asked for new rice but never got it. Disappointed and won't return. They did give us half off the bill, which was a sign of some sort of customer service. Our server was really great despite the complaints we had.

The move was not kind to Juanita's. The old location was PACKED for lunch daily, new spot you could shoot a gun without fear of hitting another diner. Food was "ok", not what it once was by any means. Service was slow but friendly with a lot of apologies for forgotten items. Best I can tell they want to be a bar, maybe even a music venue-which they may be on weekends. I will probably never know.

I'm currently at this restaurant. I've been here for 1 hour at a table for 2. We've had 3 random people come check on us, only after we keep making puppy eyes at them. I'm still unsure who our server actually is. So, yeah....not great.

Hmm I really had to do a double take based on the other reviews of Juanita's to make sure I had the right place. We came here during our trip to Little Rock and I found the food to be very good. I enjoyed the chips and salsa and everything I had was delicious. We have been pretty bummed not having a decent Mexican food experience out here having come from San Diego. I have to say I enjoyed my meal a lot, the wait staff was very nice and kept up fine on the drinks and overall it was very good and I would 100% come back when I go back to Little Rock later this year. Maybe I hit them on a really good day but I found their food and ambiance to be very nice and what I would expect from a Mexican Cantina.

Great fish tacos. Wait staff was on top of things. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a laid back place with good food and decent prices.

Was on my way to the Discovery Museum and was hungry, so I had a late lunch here. Only a few other folks in the place. My waitress was nice and friendly, although she seemed like she was kind of new there. A little unsure. But no issues. Had the grilled fish tacos -- delicious! The fish was unbreaded and nicely grilled, and tacos had a slightly spicy sauce, cabbage, and a little cheese. Really good. They were soft tacos, which was perfect. Came with retried beans & rice -- nothing remarkable about them. Chips & salsa also included; they were fresh and a nice starter. I would definitely come again for lunch!

I always have hope when I come here based on the old location, but food is fair to average and service is fair to average.

Himmm where do I start. Arrive at 9:00pm waited over 15 min to be seated (no menus) waitress that was assigned had no clue. (Her excuse is I have only been here 4 days). She didn't know menu, didn't know if they did pitchers of margaritas. She DID Know that they ran out of chips! (What do I eat my cheese dip with). After ordering food (VERY LIMITED MENU) we are through one pitcher of margaritas and we are told our food will be another 15-20min. Asked if we could get something comped. Manager was VERY abrupt in explained he can't give us free margaritas but he could comp a meal if we want. So far would NOT recommend.

Food is fine, but the management of the restaurant is horribly organized. The staff wants to do well but they are poorly trained and communication is ridiculous. Runners emerge from the kitchen and literally just wander around saying what they are carrying until someone flags them down.

Granted, we were there at a busy night (Brett Michaels concert) but the service sucked! The waitress was quick to bring chips and salsa plus water, but after that it was pitiful. I waited at least 20 minutes for my margarita. I ordered Patron, and it tasted like straight mix. For $9.50, seriously? She brought us one menu and put it in front of an empty chair, making us reach across the table to share one menu. My order was wrong, I had ordered beef tacos and not chicken, but after a 30 minute wait I wasn't going to complain and wait longer. My fiance's water was dry for about 10 minutes before she even noticed, and then she came back to the table at least 3 times and said "oh, you need water" before she finally brought it. And when she finally brought the water, she put it in front of the same empty chair where she put the one menu. Seriously?? Poor service. Even on a busy night she could have been at least slightly attentive. Their food is good, which is the ONLY reason I gave them 2 stars.

A day off and a visit to Little Rock, and trip to the library completed the only thing left was to get drinks. The closest place that served drinks and was close by was Juanita's. Since it's a Mexican restaurant margaritas were in order. We sat at the bar and ordered up. Our bartender was pretty good, he was busy though, even though it was slow. Well, maybe because it was slow, he seemed to be wearing a lot of different hats. The classic margarita was pretty good, the second one I got a strawberry one was stronger than the first. I think maybe since he figured we would stay for a while, especially since we ordered the chips and guac. The chips were okay, and he gave us 2 bowls so we wouldn't have to share as well as two bowls of salsa. The guacamole was all right though, salsa was better, very tomato-ey, but not as watery as I thought it would be.

Bring back the old menu!!! They recently cut down their menu significantly (to about 10 items) and got rid of the best street tacos in LR! Food is still pretty good, but with so few choices, it's almost not worth the trip anymore. I got the tamales and the portion was pretty small - I got more rice and beans than entree. So stay away from this item if you're hungry!

  • Michele S.

AWFUL!! The service was horrible and the food was even worse. Ordered chicken fajitas that were too disgusting to even eat. And the waitress was completely clueless as what to do about it. Ended up with cheese quesadillas, which were...well....cheese quesadillas. Not exactly what I go out for.

Good place for a drink and music, the live bands are loud and the service isn't always spot on but a good place to hang out. The food isn't spectacular and don't expect anything in a hurry. Decent food for Arkansas as far as Mexican is concerned, I haven't found one GREAT Mexican food place yet.

If Taco Bell made beef fajitas and threw out the crap left over they would taste better than the garbage beef I just ate here. YUK. I can't believe the food took so long but I guess you have to wait for the beef to thaw in the microwave. Robert Irvine couldn't save this crap if he had a week.

This review is just for the food, not the drinking. The ONLY reason that this review gets two stars instead of negative twenty is because the manager (or one of the managers), Carl, made a half-assed attempt to ask me why I didn't like my food. At least he asked. We had chips and salsa. They were atrocious. The chips were from yesterday, or earlier, and were cold and nasty. Wait. I forgot. I haven't talked about what happened when I walked in. The bartender/host/server escorts me in to the COMPLETELY empty restaurant during dinnertime. He says I should sit near the window. Okay, sounds good. We walk to that table - it is covered in weird grime. He spots it and escorts me to the next table. Similar grime. "Um, these tables are all fucking dirty and I just got here." Okay. He seats me three tables away from the window. He seems kind of embarrassed and apologetic. I don't fault him. Chips - stale. Salsa, really bad. Like, bitter, weird acidic bad. I think that the tomato is coming out of a can, it has a sharp metallic taste. I order the chicken empanadas, the menu claims they are flaky and light. They are raw, completely, grossly, inedibly raw. If you have not enjoyed raw frozen puff pastry before, give it a shot. The beans and rice on the side are hilariously bad. This was an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Crunchy nasty rice, cracked dry beans. Bad bad bad. I am starving, and I can only manage to swallow like 30% of the food. Carl the manager comes by after seeing that I have eaten only a small bit, he inquires as to the problem. I tell him that the empanada was raw and gross. He makes some apologies and politely asks that I give it another shot and return. Doubt it.

Just got back from lunch with my mom. I was worried because I know they have new owners etc and some of the reviews I've read haven't been very favorable. But our lunch was delicious and the service was attentive and friendly. We ordered the yellow cheese dip and it was hot and flavorful. The chips were perfect. They were warm and held the dip nicely. The salsa was tangy and fresh with roasted tomatoes, which I thought was a nice touch. I ordered the chicken flauta and replaced the refried beans that it came with to the black beans. The flauta was big and was topped with fresh guacamole, with tons of cilantro, and sour cream. The chicken was moist and tender and it had plenty of melted cheese inside. The black beans had just the right firmness, without being undercooked or overcooked. They were topped with melted Monterrey jack cheese. The rice was good too. My mom had the fish tacos and she had only good things to say about it. I've been going to Juanita's for a long time and it's had it's ups and downs. I haven't been in a long time so I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely come back.

Happy Hour at Juanita's was great. The specials in the bar area are second to NONE. The tacos, cheese dip and adult beverages rocked my socks! Juanita's is always a good time for me and my friends. P.S. Don't miss the white queso!

I'll start with the good... the drinks were pretty decently priced, and the set up is really nice. The patio area is large and has a nice feel. That's about it for the positive. A group of us were going to a show at Juanita's, and were grabbing some food downstairs before the show. Initially we were sitting outside on the aforementioned patio, but after 20 minutes without being acknowledged by a server, we decided to go inside as we were in a bit of a time crunch at this point. Our waitress was quick to acknowledge and take our orders this time, and, as we had previously decided on what we wanted while waiting outside, we made it quick and easy. It was at least another 10 minutes before we received our drinks. When the food finally came out, 3 of the 6 orders were incorrect or incomplete, including one dish that was missing entirely. The manager was helping us at this point and assured us that he would correct the issue. However, we never received our cheese dip, or the side of rice that one of us had ordered. Thirty minutes later the missing dish still had not made its appearance, and we're getting increasingly worried about getting in line for the our friends show. The manager was nice enough to give us "VIP" access for the show, and allowed us to go up the back stairs so that we didn't have to wait in line. After 40 minutes we finally received the missing NACHOS...did I mention that it took 40 minutes to get an order of nachos!? Which, by the way, was about 5 chips with some melted cheese on top. Oh yeah, I was so distracted by the terrible service that I forgot to mention how lackluster and over priced the food itself was. Overall, not a terrible place to go for a show, although the staff upstairs were also jerks as well, with the exception of one lovely waitress, but I would advise against going there for food. Drinks, okay. Food, no way. UPDATE: After checking my debit account I found that I had an additional charge from Juanita's that was definitely not mine. I spent yesterday playing tag with the managers and being dealt a lot of BS, and still haven't heard back from anyone. I am also now feeling that my review wasn't scathing enough. Seriously, this place is awful. Without a doubt, the very worst restaurant experience that I have ever had.

LOVE their margaritas! I generally can't stomach a margarita because it's usually too sweet, but theirs are the best I've had. Also the cheese dip is in my opinion the best in town. I don't get overly excited at their other menu items, but I've never had anything I hated. The spinach enchiladas are tasty as are the tacos al carbon. The bar/music area is also always a good time. My only negative is that I don't usually want to be in that area of town too late at night. eek!

I have no idea what happened to Juanitas. We used to love going there and it has been about a year since we had visited. I heard that it was for sale not long ago and maybe that is the issue. The caesar salad was iceburg lettuce with flavorless tomato and flavorless super cheap croutons. Pitiful for a $7 salad. The quesadilla was equally awful and TINY for it's price tag. They really should offer two salsas as the one they serve is pretty hot and some people can't stomach that. Their oven was down as well so nothing to choose from except quesadillas, flautas, and fajitas. I think I will be giving it a while before attempting it again.

I've been coming here for years and years, from when I was 10 dining with my parents, to now 25-year-old me going to see a show & having a few drinks. Although I do have the food is not as good as it used to be in the past, it's still up there on my list. It's nice to break away from Arkansas's traditional Americanized Mexican fare, and have something a little more traditional and mature. The flautas & cheese and onion quesadillas are awesome, and you can opt for black beans instead of refried. The main thing that keeps me coming back is my love affair with their cheese dip! It's not as good as it used to be, but it's still my favorite of all time! Spicy, yellow and full of flavor. Also, come out to a show some night and enjoy a margarita or cocktail in a fun atmosphere. Good times, but not necessarily in the best area of town.

  • Rod M.

Everybody's always been big on this place, but honestly, it's highly overrated. If you're looking to drink, I can't help you, and maybe that's the deal. But the food is so-so at best (and getting worse), and the prices are pretty high for what you get. There are better places: go to them.

    (2)
  • MJ S.

I haven't eaten the food, but the bar is fun. It's a great place to watch a band, dance, or watch other people watch a band. You should probably also LISTEN to the band while you watch it, but if you don't want to listen to it, the bartenders will give you earplugs if you ask nicely. :)

  • Squishy S.

$2.50 margaritas were good price for happy hour. Food on the other hand was HORRIBLE!!!! Our waiter even formed us that they were cooking our food so we wouldn't get food poisoning!!! Food was very bland and service was ok.

  • Abigail N.

Juanita's has been around for years and has always produced good food, but a change in ownership definitely lowered the quality a little bit. While it's still delicious, it's just not quite as good. Sometimes the service is a little shoddy too, but it's such an institution in LR that I find myself going back. Get the flautas!

  • David M.

My favorite little bar in LR! Best place to grab a drink and see a band between deadlines & bylines! They serve one of the meanest Margaritas in town and have a full menu of great Mexican dishes. They get some of the best indie rock/alternative bands that come through town. Stop in next door and say hello to the fine folks at the Little Rock Free Press. LRFP-is the Arkansas version of the Village Voice-NYC, Memphis Flyer, Nashville Scene, LA Weekly, The Stranger-Seattle, Creative Loafing-Atlanta.

actually 3.5 stars - 5 stars for the music; 2 stars for the food. this relatively small venue allows for more intimate shows\concerts than you would get in bigger cities. i've been here multiple times to listen to bands play and i've never been disappointed. i had dinner before a show once and the food wasn't all that great. shrimp fajitas were salty and the sides were bland. go for the music, not the food. also, if you drink, don't order a margarita, since it's weak as hell.

Inconsistent menu. Food is nothing special. The cheap happy hour margaritas keep us coming back every once in a while.

  • Stan S.

juanitas used to be better. great place for live music and beers but if you want food then look elsewhere. cheese dip is okay but nothing that juanitas offers has any real spice/heat to it. they dont use corn tortillas either - very unmexican indeed. the food totally substandard in every way imaginable. if you are in little rock and must have mexican then go to casa manana or to hacienda or better yet, find a taco truck... i hope juanitas reads this and adds some heat to their salsa which as it stands is simply crushed tomatoes. this restaurant gets an F.

Not to sure about the food here but I've seen several concerts at the " new location " and dozens at the old location on main street. Usually a great venue and they have a good variety of musicians and bands that come threw.

Though a great place for salsa dancing, Juanita's once vibrant menu has dwindled in a drastic way. My friends and I went and tried the new menu last night. We started out with luke warm-too thick cheese dip. The Wet Willy entrée my boyfriend ordered had a rank smell of old meat, and the aftertaste couldn't be doused with their watered-down margarita. We sent it back, and the manager only comped 20% on the item--something that could have caused a food poisoning lawsuit. The Enchilada Laredo was ok, but you could tell their once flavorful enchilada sauce is no longer homemade. Though the staff was nice, it was clear the new menu was a sudden change, as no one could answer our questions. Poor management + worse food = we won't be back

The shrimp was OVER COOKED; the waiter said sorry, and left for another table!!! That is the best he had to offer?!?!?!?!

Extremely overpriced given that the food portions are small. Workers are not very friendly. Website isn't updated with new menu after several months serving off new menu. Only good thing I can say is that the salsa is great.

Fish tacos were the best! Very yummy! Sat outside and it was pleasant. Service was good. Prices were a bit high, but I'm pretty sure their rent is high for that location is the main reason.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
