Absolutely love this place. Best sushi I've ever had, both in LR and beyond. Don't be put off by the atmosphere - it is a little quiet and in an older building. There are always free appetizers and it's the touches like that which make this place exceptional. A humble yet impressive sushi place!

The menu had a lot of choices I've not seen and seemed to be a larger selection than I'm accustomed to. The sushi was fantastic, seriously I'd say the best I've had in Arkansas. The only thing that makes this place less than stellar is the environment and general ambiance, its not fancy in the slightest, but they obviously aren't trying to be. What they are is a great place to get awesome food at good price in a very casual setting.

Very basic sushi . Nothing special about it .

This is the best ratio of quality:cost of sushi in Little Rock. In fact, it may even be the best sushi overall. I think their sushi is superior to many fancier/more expensive places. It's a cozy interior with friendly staff. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar and chatting with the chefs to get their recommendations. Definitely get the agedashi tofu - they make some of the best I've ever had. And obviously cuts vary, but the salmon nigiri here has always been fatty and heavenly. The yakisoba noodles are the only thing I've had here that have been kind of meh. I posted pictures of their menu since they don't have a takeout menu.

I am giving this one star because our waitress was absolutely unprofessional and RUDE to customers. She was offended when we asked a question about the rolls, and was rolling her eyes and looking the other direction when we were talking to her. Severe attitude with every encounter as if we were such a bother to her..sorry we came into your restaurant to give you business. I hate to give a bad review to what might be good food, but the service left us with a sour taste to say the least.

Arrived about 6:30 pm and I thought they were closed since it was completely empty, then a waitress welcomed me in, it is Monday but being empty at 6:30 is not a good indication... I ordered my beer and service was fast and friendly, beer was very cold and came with a frozen glass! So far this is good. Boy they have sushi: 50+ specialty rolls!! My kind of place, I ordered the yellow tuna sushi and was very good and big enough. The fish tasted fresh and the people at the sushi bar were friendly. You wont find nothing unusual, and at the same time this is bad. I believe sushi to be an art, and as any art you have the ones that copy it and the ones that create it. This place is a very good place for copying this art, and trust me for many this will be enough, there is nothing bad with it, but nothing new either. Would I come back... hell yes!! would it be my ultimate sushi place? far from it. Are you craving some sushi? this is definitely the place to be. Are you looking for new gastronomic orgasms?? move on.

The food was great! The restaurant isn't the prettiest... but the food and service more than make up for it!
(4)Michelle C.
Great service, great food. Incredible prices for sushi. This is the only place I go in Little Rock.
(4)Dustin C.
Maybe for sushi in Arkansas this is good but I'm not impressed. Tuna tasted off a bit like it wasn't fresh. The soup and salads were fine but fish dishes were way below average.
(3)Kylie D.
A total dive spot. Best sushi in Little Rock.
(4)Tara S.
I stopped in for a late lunch, just wanted one roll of sushi. When I first walked up to the door I was a little hesitant to walk in! I'm glad I did. I had the spicy crab roll & it was wonderful!
(4)Aliya Y.
Their bento box lunch cannot be beat! For $10 bucks you get 5 pieces of sashimi (usually salmon and one other kind of fish), a very generous portion of tuna tataki, edamame, potato salad, green salad with ginger-carrot dressing, miso soup and rice....I might be forgetting something but you get the idea - order this and you will leave STUFFED and HAPPY!
(5)Nagarjuna K.
Fried rice is salty .. No Good!! It takes so long to get your order cooked if you get in there on busy day
(1)Jeré L.
Still my favorite sushi bar. I miss it.
(5)Brian G.
I went there for a late dinner after flying in to Little Rock for a business trip. Hanaroo lived up to its good rating! Tons of roll choices and generous servings of nigiri. It wasn't crowded so I got very fast, attentive service.
(5)Alaina L.
Never had a sushi roll with kiwi on top! I had the "pretty woman sushi roll". It was delicious.

The decor (or lack thereof) at Hanaroo is part of the charm. This dive-y little storefront place with its janky awning in the downtown business district could easily be picked up and swapped with a neighborhood sushi joint in New York City and no one would be the wiser. Based on the "52 Dishes We Crave in Central Arkansas" article in the most recent Arkansas Times, we went on a Thursday night around 7:30. Clearly, everyone else in the area read the same article. The restaurant was pretty full but we managed to snag a table by the door. The server came by and said she'd bring us water and our wine and take our order in just a minute. Two other couples came in after us and she served them while completely ignoring us. About fifteen minutes later she finally came by with our drinks and said she had forgotten about us (!!!). Tip to servers: Don't EVER say this. Just apologize and move on; we'll get over it. We finally placed our order for a few rolls (The Happy Chad [recommended in the Ark Times article], The New Orleans, The Volleyball, and the Harris) and a couple pieces of hamachi. Based on the amount of people in the restaurant, I'd say the food arrived in a reasonable timeframe. And it was delicious! More and more, I'm finding that sushi joints are using lots of cucumber as filler to reduce the amount of fish in their rolls. I do not like cucumber a whole lot, so I was pleased to find such a wide variety of rolls without it. And they have escolar, my favorite fish. If you have never eaten escolar, you owe it to yourself to try it. But, a word to the wise: Don't eat a whole lot of it. Google "escolar" and you'll see why. You can thank me later. Their menu is vast (seriously, y'all, they have 56 different rolls) and runs the gamut from Korean specialties to noodle bowls to the expected tempura and hibachi-style items. Service issue aside, I'm going back to try their bibimbap and more sushi soon.

Looked them up while visiting downtown Little Rock. Great sushi in a surprising location! Enjoyed everything that we ordered. Very happy and full when we left.
(4)Ka T.
This place was good, I went on a quiet night and ordered the large sushi platter. It was very tasty and well presented. Considering my large appetite i also ordered a seafood Sobe noodle dish as well. Seem like a small portion but was very good.

Decent sushi in Little Rock, Arkansas? Hard to believe, but leave it to Sushi Wanugee to scour the landscape for you in search of odd culinary delights in odder places! Owner/Chef Chang Yu is Korean, but he worked in a Japanese owned sushi-ya in South Carolina (there is a Hitachi plant there) and studied under a Japanese Chef for 5 years before opening up here. (The previous owner was Korean too!) One thing about Korean owned Sushi restaurants is that they are good at making rolls (because usually their sushi skills and freshness are lacking), and they are usually pretty cheap in prices, to lure you in. Most people never notice that they are speaking Korean, not Japanese, so the strategy works! I tried all nigiri, my usuals of Sake, Maguro, Hamachi, and even the more unusual (for a place not on the coasts) Saba and Ikura, and they were all good! Not like the west coast, but for Arkansas? Fantastic! And you know what? Most of the Nigiri were only $3 for 2 pieces! Are you kidding me? Yu-san tried to keep the prices low to attract customers and repeat customers, since he is about 4 blocks from the tourist heavy riverbank in Little Rock. It's working, because he has been open for 4 years and counting. I also had Hiyayakko (cold tofu appetizer) and a 300ml bottle of Ginjo cold sake. And Yu-san was very generous in giving me a plate of his home made Kimchi (also good) and his rare bulgogi beef in a ponzu like sauce on the house. Total bill, with sushi, booze, kimchi and rare beef platter, with tax AND tip? $40! You can't beat that with a stick! (Or sushi roll!) They have a roll here called the Little Rock roll, which has hella stuff in it for only $6.95. It is very popular. I forgot to ask if he had a "bubba" roll to honor Bill Clinton. Maybe a cheeseburger wrapped in rie and seaweed! I told him he should make a "Razorback Roll" for the University of Arkansas fans. This would be local cured ham, southern biscuits and gravy, stuffed into a rice roll, covered with crispy tempura or panko breading, and deep fried. It should come out looking like a ferrel pig with a razor back! Maybe sitck a couple of short cucumbers in one end to be the tusks of that razorback! Hanaroo has a largve menu of rolls and ktichen cooked items, even unusual things like Koroke (deep fried panko breaded potato) and other such izakaya like dishes. The restaurant has about 8 sushi bar seats and about 15 tables. Yu-san is quiet but friendly, and a very nice man who makes perhaps the best sushi in Little Rock. I promised him to send you all down here to give it a try! Sushi Wanugee here, you know you love me!

Solid sushi w/ a friendly staff. Asked for their popular rolls & recommendations & wasn't let down. On a short overnight like a place in Little Rock, Arkansas, what more can you ask for besides great service and good food?

I stopped into this unpretentious little sushi shop in downtown Little Rock a few days ago and was more than a little impressed. The atmosphere was laid back and inviting. The menu was full of options I hadn't seen at most other sushi shops. I don't recall the names of the rolls that were ordered but I can say that they were fresh, flavorful and very satisfying. The service was on point and the prices were well below the recently inflated cost of sushi. If your passing through LR or from the area, I highly recommend a visit to Hanaroo. I was delightfully surprised at the quality of sushi and entire dining experience.

I am a big sushi fanatic , and I'd have to say this is probably one of the best sushi bars in Little rock. They have alot of varieties , not to mention the biggest list of rolls ive ever seen... its about 3 -4 pages long of rolls.. i swear it was at least 50 rolls in that menu. First thing i did with my friend was go straight to the sushi bar, pretty small as usual. And we talked to the sushi chief who was korean, very funny man. can't ever tell when he's not joking though. we had to move to a bigger table since we ordered like... 6 rolls. I ordered mussels my favorite thing to get in any sushi shop. I didnt expect the portion... it was huge 6 mussels! i was exepcting two... Anyways the mussels was amazing... I also ordered gyoza .. not the best .. im not sure what was wrong with it.. i guess not enough flavor. VOLCANO ROLL!! that was the best roll they got so i ordered it.. hands down it beat all the other rolls we ordered. It was good... as well as all the other sushi rolls. Waitress was sweet , we had the cute Korean soon to be business lady waitress. Very nice and she was always asking us how it was.. we didn't finish sadly... it was more than we expected ... Atmosphere was great reminded me of a ramen house back at home. At the end of the night the chief made us a special squid and seaweed salad... it was a gift from him.. i was shocked . i devoured that thing... it was the best salad I've ever had.. if you even consider that a salad. Overall ratings. Freshness 4.5/5 Sushi 4/5 Gyoza 3.5/5 Mussels 4.5/5 special squid and seaweed salad 5/5 Recommended for any sushi lovers out there. Like fanatics. not a lot of people can tell the difference between fresh and not fresh sushi.. the fatty salmons sure were fresh ahha!

Food wise this place was pretty good and I'd go there again. It was an early Friday night and the place was pretty quiet - it wouldnt win any awards for atmosphere. The waitress for me looked totally bored and not interested in giving any personality away so that too counted against the visit. But it's well worth giving it a go. The food, as I say, was good.

This place is totally fly. First, there was a bit of apprehension from me. Sushi in Arkansas? Listen here, sweetie pies. Don't you worry your pretty little faces for one hot minute. It was wonderful & fresh, kinda like me. Things we LOVED: ***The Mr. T ***The Space Shuttle ***Nigori Sake (no, this is not rocket fuel. it's smooth, delish, good stuff.) Miso soup had no tofu, but we were one of the last customers. The house salad with ginger dressing was yum. Kiddos ordered the teryaki chicken and devoured it. Service was awesome. Polite, cute, sweet. Just lovely. They are about to expand and if I HAD to absolutely find something wrong with Hanaroo, it seems to need a facelift. But, Confucius always say, "Don't judge a sushi by it's cover."

I'm pretty picky. Were this place in LA I might give them four stars, but pulling off a great sushi house in Little Rock gets them the extra star:^O You can get lost in the menu, so I guess my only gripe is you have so much to choose from, if you're not focused it could take all night. Food was fantastic. Kirin on draft! Can't recommend more highly!
(5)Josh L.
Good, not great, sushi bar.
(3)Christopher M.
Behold, the worst Miso soup I have ever tasted. I mean really bad, like, the water or stock they made it with was half rancid or something. It had two tiny cubes of tofu floating in it and one tiny shred of scallion. Boring, bitter and off-putting. Not a good start. I read the previous reviews and learned that Hanaroo, like so many sushi restaurant in the U.S., is actually run by Koreans instead of Japanese. No worry, I've been to great sushi places run by all kinds of people. Knowing this, I ordered specifically Korean things. Sushi is great and all, but there are only a couple sushi-grade fish purveyors in Little Rock and basically all of the sushi places here are serving the exact same thing. Basic, defrosted, mostly farmed, sushi. It's cool when they jazz things up with crispy this, or spicy creamy that, but it's the same fish. Anywho, I ordered the chicken bulgogi bento box while I watched the main sushi chef/probably owner do his thing behind the sushi bar. He was sloppy, which is weird, like, he dropped some cucumber pieces at one point, and another time, he handed a waitress a plate at such a rakish angle that the food slid off it it. Odd way of demonstrating a precise craft... My bento box arrives, it is bountiful. The rice is hard, undercooked and tasteless. A defrosted and deep-fried vegetable wonton thing was instantly forgettable. My little green salad thing sat literally in 3/4" of dressing. The chicken was boring, the sauce was unpleasant. Service was fine, my waitress dropped off my check just a few minutes after she dropped off my entree, which was weird, but no big deal. Probably won't be back. The owner/manager/operator is not keeping regular quality checks. The rice was inexcusable. The miso was inedible.

I LOVE Hanaroo! I have been here many times. For me, it's the best sushi in the Little Rock area. I love philadelphia rolls and this place has the smoked salmon like it's supposed to be. I also love the Little Rock roll, it's fried with crab, asparagus, and Japanese potato salad... yum! Service can be slow-ish... so don't go if you're in an absolute hurry. My dining companion often gets the house special fried tofu and says it's very good also.
(5)Jennifer H.
People that eat here swear by it, and a friend who spent time in Japan says this is more authentic, but I did not enjoy the sushi, sashimi, or the salad. A particular favorite, purists would sigh, is smoked salmon. Instead of using smoked salmon, they used what tasted like a liquid smoke marinade. They do use larger cuts of fish than other places, but I find these hunks of fish with too little fish unappetizing. Everything I tried was just a little off.
(2)Rusty C.
Best sushi place! Small, quiet, downtown. The Tuna Tataki is the best anywhere! They can fill up for lunch but dinner is usually very quiet. We eat here often because it's good and not so expensive. Happy hour on select rolls before 6pm and the value of the Bento box for lunch cannot be beat. Only reason for not having 5 stars is that they used to have Indy music playing in the background and no tv. Now it's all 80s ballads all the time.

I had planned on dining at Wasabi since it was the closest sushi place from my hotel, but after having read the reviews, I decided to pass. Since Hanaroo had received mostly positive reviews, I decided that a longer walk was in order. As soon as I entered, I knew this would not be an authentic Japanese/Sushi experience. I could tell immediately (maybe a sixth sense?) that this was not a Japanese run place. My guess was right on the spot, since as soon as I opened the menu, the first 2 dishes I noticed were Kalbi and Bulgogi. I'd say the only 2 positive aspects of this place were low prices and good service. The food was sub-par. The sashimi wasn't THAT fresh and the portions were quite small. I guess I should appreciate Plano more after this dining experience. I doubt this place would last more than a few months in Plano.

Stopped by here while on my road trip. This review is based solely on the 3 items my hubs and i ordered of the menu. After being spoilt with top notch quality sushi in Japan & Hawaii, I have to admit it is very difficult to find good sushi especially if you're not surrounded by the ocean. Green tea: it's from a tea bag which i can get from walmart. It was quite dissapointing to pay $1.50 for that. Chicken Yaki Soba: It was ok. Had better ones in Texas before. The chicken was very dry and unflavorful. However the overall taste of the noodles were good. Nigiri set: Upon looking at the color of the sashimi, i knew right away that it wasn't as fresh as it should be. I sampled one from my husband's plate and the texture was way off. Oh, well! At least we tried. Unfortunately i am not a fan of rolls with cream cheese in it hence, i did not order any. From the reviews looks like the rolls and beef tataki is superb. Maybe i might give those dishes a chance next time?
(3)Ramona C.
I'm not a sushi person, but stepped out in the name of adventure and went to lunch with a friend to Hanaroo. I was pleasantly surpised at the non-sushi options. At my friend's suggestion, I tried the lunch bento box with beef. It was great. Included in this special was Miso soup (A.mazing), salad with Ginger, fried rice, egg roll, dumplings, potato salad-ish item, and the beef stir-fry. It was the best fried rice I've had since relocating from NYC. The beef was good as well. Basically it was all wonderful. Well, everything EXCEPT the service. I'm not sure what the issue was, but the service was less than stellar. That's why I could not give five stars. I will definitely visit again and recommend to friends.
(4)Kevin R.
Hanaroo is probably the best sushi I have had in Little Rock. The Korean influence on the menu gives you some interesting options not normally available at traditional sushi restaurants. The lunch prices are outstanding, and the dinner prices are very reasonable. I recently moved here from Chicago and was really stoked about finding decent sushi in Arkansas. The beef and tuna tataki are both amazing. The lunch tuna tataki bento box is a killer deal. The fish portions on the Rainbow Roll were quite generous. I almost always order a cup of miso with my meal. The Nigori saki is unfiltered, cold, and delicious. The wait staff is super. My waitress was really helpful explaining all the different options on their menu which is quite extensive. Once the owner gave me a free portion of something I am not really sure what it was called but it had smoked squid in it and was reallllly tasty. He just handed it over the bar. I've never had that happen at any other place.
(5)Brittany K.
The food was more like 4 stars, but the service was awful. I came in with my husband and 3 girlfriends, it took about 20 minutes for someone to come by and take our drink order. She then informed us she had "several large parties" which as we could see the entire dining room from our table was 2 other tables, one a party of 4 and the other a party of 5. Not really "large parties" In my opinion, but to each his own. Maybe 10 minutes later she came back to take our orders. She seemed very frazzled and was borderline rude with us several times, she acted like we were wasting our time when we had questions about different sushi rolls. The rest of my party ordered sushi and I ordered chicken fried rice and miso soup. She forgot my soup and I ended up getting it at the same time as my entree. The food was very good though, some of the best miso soup I've ever had and the fried rice had all kinds of vegetables, broccoli, zucchini, onions, etc that I really enjoyed. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their sushi, one friend who is recently back from Japan said this was the best sushi shes had stateside. My husband also had the beef tatake which he inhaled. I would definitely go back as the food was very good and the prices very reasonable, however maybe go at lunch time or earlier in the evening when the servers aren't quite so stressed.
(3)Tiffany B.
I don't do sushi but they have the best beef tataki I have ever tasted. I have searched far and wide to find something comparable. Their ponzu sauce is delicious and the beef is sliced to the perfect thinness. As far as Japanese places go, most places are sushi and/or hibachi. This place has other stuff. The service can be rather slow, but it is so worth it. Oh and the ginger dressing for their salads is my favorite ginger dressing ever! Basically, what I am saying is TRY THE BEEF TATAKI (or even the tuna tataki if you aren't a beef type person). Yummy spring rolls, too...Oh, if you get food to go from here, be sure to check your order. 3 out of 5 times they leave my salad out.
(5)Josie E.
Went for dinner on a Sat pm. Was not dissapointed. The crowd was modest, rest was definitely a "dive", but that might make this place more kitchy & hip. Food was good. Edamame was some of the best I ever had. Had a Tiger, Super Philly & Beverly Hills. All wonderful. We will visit again for sure. I thought the service was okay, maybe a little slow but no biggie.
(4)Jbot S.
Omg good. The sushi cannot be beat in this region. Try the beef tatake... It's what you're tatalking about:) much of the food has a Korean influence as, I believe the establishment is Korean owned.
(5)meli f.
The sushi at this restaurant is good! The fish is fresh and tasty, not something I expected to find in Arkansas. I didn't try any other sushi restaurants in little rock, but I also wouldn't have driven out to get sushi at a different place. I was happy with all the rolls I ordered.
