This is awesome home cooking. I think Gene's has been here for a while, but 30 years ago, it was called Sweetpeas. It was good 30 years ago, and it's really good now. Skip the BBQ, and just get the catfish. The catfish is excellent. You will know you are in rural Arkansas when you walk in this place, and you will get a rare glimpse of how good rural Arkansans eat. Delta Style Fried Catfish and don't forget to get a homade fried pie for dessert. I hear that Gene is looking to sell, I hope that the next owner does it half as good.

Slow, country feel and if you like the food, there are items for sale to take home. I came for the catfish - thin, crispy catfish fillets (I would suggest getting 2). The hush puppies were small, dense, and overly crispy for me. The ribs were soft and smoky...mmm. Fries just okay, coleslaw okay. They have sweet and spicy pickled tomato, which I think was one of the items for sale. Some of the pies are premade, which is a little disappointing, but at least some are made in-house. Other things of interest on menu that I did not try: sorghum molasses, fried bologna, fried quail, frog legs, fried oysters, buffalo fish ribs, fried pies

Made the mistake of stopping in Wheatley to try out Sweet Pea's Country Cooking. Gross there - smoking atmosphere and filthy restrooms. Kept driving to Brinkley and stopped at Gene's BBQ. Had room for big rig parking and the food was pretty good with filling portions. Not the best BBQ, but tasty enough. Everything from BBQ sauce to cole slaw to potato salad was a bit on the sweet side, but meat was tender. Unfortunately, their restrooms were dirty too - sensing a disturbing theme for this part of Arkansas. Doesn't the health department check out these things?

Waited over an hour for cold food but the service was friendly. SCARY bathroom! Try the sonic.

Great friendly service. Food is a little sketchy to me. But I enjoyed the entertaining atmosphere. The waitress was charming. The other customers that gather there regularly were loud, inappropriate, and made us feel uncomfortable. The kitchen was out of a lot of food. And the waitress only recommended the fish, she said the rest was inedible.

Most probably the best place in town, it came highly recommended to us by the locals. The barbecue was excellent, and the fried peach pie for dessert was amazing. The only downside was that the selection of beer was limited to Bud and Bud Light. But the waitress was charming and sweet, which made our visit there enjoyable. If you're staying in town, this it's the place to go to.

Not horrible but not good. Service was so slow! We shared the combination plate. Pork was cut in slices instead of pulled pork. Ribs were ok and their Farm raised catfish was way over cooked. If you are starving and looking for a dive keep driving. Not worth it!

For a road trip stop, it was surprisingly good. I had combination BBQ plate. It came with 2 ribs, a catfish filet, and pulled pork. Two sides and rolls. $10.99 Price is good for quality/quantity ratio. Ribs were fall off the bone tender. The catfish was good. Their meats were the best. Coleslaw looked and tasted bought, instant potato and packet of gravy mix. The baked beans tasted ok. Not special but ok. Desserts were lacking and waitresses didn't seem interested in pushing them. Overall pleased. But there are some shortcomings.

We have a couple of days off here between shows and so we decided to take the back roads from Little Rock, AR down to Jackson, MS on our way to New Orleans. Somewhere near Brinkley we stopped in a mobile home-cum-business where a woman named Miss Lena was selling pies. They were delicious and warrant an additional review, but we asked her to show us the way to food. She did, but we think she hadn't left her pie bakery for years and it must have closed while she was knee deep in gooey apples. A ways down the road we tried again and this time a gentleman in an easy chair in an antique store directed us to Gene's BBQ - that was exactly the kind of day we were having. Gene's hit the spot for us -- it's a roadside joint and their idea of decor involves rickety tables with plastic table cloths and memorabilia mostly devoted to the recently re-discovered ivory-billed woodpecker. There's a TV episode of This American Life that dealt with the mysterious bird, so it was cool to realize we'd landed in woodpecker mission control. Fried Catfish, pickled green tomatoes, slaw and hush puppies for the pescatarian among us (that's me) Pulled Pork with delicious sides for Patrick Grilled Cheese for Lisa. The thing is, down here, walking into a place like this for a northern kid like me might be a little intimidating at first, but the minute you hear the locals talking and laughing and carrying on, you feel right at home. The *only* thing I'd warn against is the bathroom cleanliness situation. It's a little bit of a situation. -Syd (This is an account I share with my band Hotels & Highways as we travel the country and try to avoid eating fast/chain food)

We decided to try Genes on our way home from the holidays it was one of the most horrendous Yelp experiences. We waited for an hour after ordering & everyone around us received their food but us...we ordered barb a que- because it is their specialty....they kept telling us our ticket would b up next....i have no idea why i sat and waited that long...finally left & they didnt even offer to cover our drinks...not surprised...

If your in the car keep on driving, if your walking, keep on stepping. My friends and I happened upon Genes while driving from Jacksonville to Oklahoma last month. It was late and the four of us needed some time out of the vehicle and some food in our bellies. We should have just accepted the time out of the vehicle. The saltine crackers on the table were stale and their cook must have previously worked at the Nebraska State Penitentiary with "Old Sparky" because the fried food was WAY over-fried. When I asked for some grits, my mistake, they said yes but what I got was a single pack of "instant Grits" that had been mixed with luke warm water. As I said, if your in the car keep on driving and if your walking, keep on stepping. I will tell you the waitress was personable.

While the BBQ sandwiches here are pretty good, I have to say the service could be a slightly improved, as they got my order wrong.

Very generous portion. Both my husband and I got the combination platter. There was pork ribs, bbq beef, and catfish, along with beans, coleslaw, French fries and a bun. The bbq was sweet and sticky. Catfish was good with a big sliver of onion on top. Diner atmosphere. We liked it a lot.

We ate here twice. The bbq pork plate and the bbq beef plate were both pretty good. The buffalo wings were tasty as well. My family swears the catfish was excellent, though I did not get a chance to taste it myself. Great, friendly service as well. One night, even though they were closing, they stayed opened and served our party of 12+. If you are ever in the area, give it a try.

You wait over an hour for your food. The BBQ sauce is good, but everything else is frozen or canned and just reheated. It is a local restaurant and the servers are overwhelmed with everyone coming in. The fried pickles are a miss, not the same as NC fried pickles.

So first things first, avoid the bathroom if at all possible. The backdrop of southern themed conversations is worth the price of admission. Food is decent to good, but plan on spending awhile waiting to get it.
