Going to be straight to the point and giving you what you want to hear: Yes, it's better than Surin. Surin might compare only when I drink my taste-buds numb. Surin, though having a very nice classy atmosphere/ambiance/bar, is more or less fast food Thai compared to Ruan. I came down to Ruan Thai for a date night after looking over their online menu--and unfortunately the menu online and the one served did not match up. I was pretty disappointed. Then I decided to come back three more times. I was blown away with their coconut curry chicken soup. I had never experienced anything so delicious; liquid bliss. The service was wonderful as we came 30 minutes before closing, and they did not mind the slightest, and if they did--they hid it very well with their smiles and asking us if we liked the food or not. Our server was very attentive and cheerful. The drink menu has a lot of yummy variety especially the Mai Tai. Servings are very generous, piping hot, flavorful, authentic, aromatic, and definitely hit any spot my stomach had through years of low-bar Thai food.

Recap: Food really good! Service was fast! Price for lunch affordable! Overall great expriance. I would go back. Boyfriend and I visited for lunch. When we arrived it was early lunch and there weren't many people so we were seated quickly. Waitress got our order not long after and food was served promptly after. The food was very good! I had their yellow curry special. Their prices for lunch are affordable...I'd choose Raun Thai over Surin any day.

I'm thinking this is a hit or miss depending on the day and who's in the kitchen after reading other reviews. I had the "Tom ka kai soup". The soup was really good but my only complaint is that they used canned instead of fresh mushrooms. I also had "Pra ram long song" which to me was very bland, not seasoned very well.

Best restaurant in Tuscaloosa. As a health conscious person, it's hard to find good places to eat in TTown. But Ruan Thai kills it. They use very little oil and no butter or dairy (I'm lactose so this is very dear to me). I recommend the Massumum Curry or the Cashew Noodle and the Salad Rolls.

The din and the crowd are hellish at lunch. The portion size was too skimpy, even considering I had an app before the entree. The food was not all that good either--I ordered it "hot", with quite an oral emphasis on the hot (which the waiter confirmed), but it just wasn't. The predominant flavor, unfortunately, was oil. I never got the soup that was supposed to come with the entree, but didn't bother asking because I was so excited about getting away. I will say the salad rolls were fine (but a salad roll pretty much is what it is). I don't doubt Ruan offers the best Thai food in Tuscaloosa, and if that's true, it would be better to wait until you're elsewhere.

Just had one of the worst dining experiences, and examples of customer service, I've ever had to endure. First off, they forgot to make my meal and then never noticed I was sitting there watching everyone else eat. After they dropped everyone else's food off, they ignored our table, which meant I had to track down the waiter to point out I had no food. By that point we had to leave sooner than I could eat so I just told them to make it to-go and then I had to track down the waiter again to get my to-go box! I also asked her if she was going to bring us our checks or do we pay at the register and she said she would bring us our check so we waited. And waited. We finally just went to the register and she rung us up, without even showing us a check. She just gave us amounts. Didn't offer to at least give me a discount on my now cold food. So basically I spent over an hour at a restaurant watching other people eat so I could go back to my office and eat cold rice at my desk.

The food is really good waitstaff though really confused during our visit. We sat out front and they brought us someone else's appetizer then brought our food out before the sushi roll app. Start of the semester so might be a changing of the guard. Red Curry was good and my daughter liked pad Thai.

A go-to for my friends and I. Always excellent food. There is nothing on the menu that I do not recommend trying. The chicken with ginger is amazing. The servers are also very friendly and knowledgable.

First time visit for me. It was a Tuesday night around 7:30. I was dining alone while on business trip. The small bar was full so I sat at a table in dinning area, alone. A little awkward but I survived. The place looks to be a house converted to restaurant. Dining was broken into smaller rooms with lots of tables but not too crowded. Room to sit without feeling like you are invading someone else's space. Or having others bump the back of your chair while sitting. A bit noisy with commotion. Not enough to be annoying, more like the right amount of noise to confirm that you made the right choice for dinning there. Empty restaurants can be a bad sign for what's to come. This was all good! Since it was my first visit, I order the evening special that was on the board out front. Kao Soi. A Noodle bowl with chicken and curry sauce and nuts and ginger and other delicious things. I requested "hot" for the spiciness. I was satisfied. Enough spice to make my nose run but not so hot as to kill the flavor of the dish. Service was prompt. Ice water was filled a couple times. The hot tea I ordered was the only let down. Not real hot, flavor was just ok, and no refill. Otherwise a great experience. I'll return to explore the menu on my next trip.

Best Thai in town dont waste your time with Surin across the street. Stop in here for a later lunch and you will have great service and food.

It's a hit or miss here. Food and service have been better at lunch. Dinner has been disappointing with mediocre, tasteless food and an oblivious server that seemed more interested in talking to her friends in the kitchen than actually doing her job. Seriously no cutlery, no "is there something else I can get you?", etc. basic type of service questions. Not planning on coming back.

I have eaten a lot of thai food around the country but Ruan Thai is head and shoulders above the rest. The curry's are what you want, fragrant when it comes out and the balance of sweet to sour to heat is remarkably balanced. The pad thai is fresh tasting, the emerald noodles is always the safety net for me, spinach noodles with a dark sauce that is bold in flavor and the pork is always moist and spiced right. And when I want something to start off with that is fresh and tasty we get a order of the salad rolls. One piece of advice, the soup is usually ok for a broth but you can ask for a salad instead, the ginger dressing is so good I wish they could bring it to me in a cup to drink.

This was my first time dining here because I so missed Thai food, having moved back home from Arizona. Arizona has the best restaurants IMO and they prepare their Pad Thai almost exactly how I remember. I'm sure if I hadn't ordered "to go" I would of had an even more delightful experience. I also ordered a hot and sour soup that was so flavorful and delicious I was just shocked didn't know Alabama had such great restaurants! Good job!

I think that I might have finally found a decent Thai restaurant in Tuscaloosa. I ordered the beef salad and green curry. They both had nice flavors to them, but both were a bit shy on meat. The salad was smaller than I was used to and for the price I was expecting it to be larger with more beef. The chicken curry was mostly vegetables (bamboo shoots). The service was friendly and prompt. I will be back to try other items on the menu of which I may amend my review after that.

Love this place and their menu!! I have tried pretty much a lot of their food and never they fail on me! Definitely check it out if you stop by Ttown and want to try some good Thai food in a cozy way. Their staff are friendly (; being friend with all of people and the owner there as I have been dining in too often :)
(5)Sandy K.
Nice decor inside. Good food. I ordered Masman curry with tofu. They also added potatos on request. Friend had Chicken Pad Thai. Both dishes were good. Thai ice tea was also good. Waitor does not smile much but provides good service. Would definitely recommend.

Great food, and it's more affordable than Surin.
(5)Daniel H.
I guess I can say they didn't disappoint, I expected mediocrity and they delivered. I have had much better, but given the region of the world we are in what can you expect. The soup was very peppery and my pad thai was lackluster, the lunch menu was also very small compared to most Thai restaurants I go to.
(2)Tiffany S.
Skip the chain across the street - go here instead! Fantastic food in a great atmosphere. And I am no Thai food expert, but I've been told it's as authentic as it gets in Alabama.

How do I even begin? I`ve always wanted to try Thai food, but my appetite was slaughtered at this place. I`ve been to many places and tried several different varieties of foods. All I can say is that the overall atmosphere of the place is sketchy at best. First of all the parking area was more or less someone`s backyard, and their specials were written up on a dirty board with faded chalk posted on what appeared to be a storage shed. At that point I felt like I needed to ring the doorbell before I let myself in. The inside of the restaurant was just strange. It appeared to be an abandoned frat house with random oriental pictures and items scattered about. You could have put up as many pictures or items as you wish, but a frat house is a frat house and the dining room area had white and black checkered floors, clearly indicating a kitchen and not a dining room area. We ordered the Thai platter/tray to start with. I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out what I was eating. There should never be multiples guesses associated with appetizers. My friend was just as confused as I was. Who deep fries broccoli, carrots, and cucumbers; or at least I guess that`s what it was. As a main meal my friend and I ordered a duck curry of some sort. When it came out it looked like an alien from outer space took all the most random items he could find to feed to a human and threw in a bowl and tried to season it with random spices. It tasted like a bowl of hot sauce, water, sugar, a fruit salad, and old meat was put together hastily and the chef stood back and looked at it like `Yeah I think this will work`. Aside from the taste there were bugs flying everywhere. Yeah...won`t be back.

I had the chicken pad thai when I went here recently for dinner. I was pleased that the meat wasn't grisly (as it sometimes is at these places); it was well trimmed. The food could have been a bit spicier, and I wish I had (or was made aware of) more options on that front. But it was good, all told. The service was prompt, and the prices reasonable. This is a clean and well-run restaurant from what I could see. One of the better Thai restaurants I've visited in the small to medium-town South.

Pretty good thai restaurant. Great for Tuscaloosa. I've only had lunch here, but I've had the chance to try out most of the menu over the years. Food is ways fresh and flavorful. Portion size is decent for lunch, and lunch can be had for under $10.

OK first I need to comment about Jess B. review. I eat here about twice a week and there has NEVER been a bad smell. I absolutely love this authentic Thai cuisine. The family that runs this restaurant is from Thailand and they know their food. I really love the lunch curry specials. This is the real deal, not some chain restaurant imitation. .

RUAN THAI IS THE SHIT. we would always eat their curries on the porch & just have our noses run & sweat in the heat. amazing! AND BETTER THAN SURIN. DUH!
(5)Tanner T.
This place is pretty cool. Shelled up in a little house right before the strip, the people are nice and foods not bad. The sushi is pretty good as well. Unfortunately I got sick the day after eating here, but that might be attributed by a stomach virus. Their peanut sauce is interesting, but probably wouldn't order it again.
(2)Kristen G.
I like Ruan Thai but only for certain things. I don't really know much about authentic Thai food aside from what I've read online and what I've had at other Thai restaurants, but I usually adore pad kee mao/drunken noodles and pad thai. I am not really a fan of how Ruan Thai puts green beans and so much bell pepper in their versions of these dishes. I feel like the flavors really clash, so when I go there I like to get things like their very tasty tofu appetizer and also the fresh rolls with peanut sauce. Usually the people I go with are happy with the other menu items, so everyone is happy - and that's what counts, right? But it seems like when I try the entree items I end up feeling a little bit disappointed. Example: I ordered the seafood salad, and it was just really lackluster - barely any seasoning except the hot chilies themselves. Oh well. Maybe I just haven't found my dish yet!

Great food, great service, great atmosphere, great value! I highly recommend this thai restaurant on the strip by downtown.

It stinks inside this restaurant! I think it smells like feet; my boyfriend said it smells like diapers.

I love it love it love it!!! It is REAL THAI FOOD! So delicious! I also really like the fact that ACTUAL THAI chefs work in the kitchen and is family owned and operated. Everything I have ordered has been delicious! They have great weekly specials and great lunch specials. The soups are good, curry is yummy, salad is fresh and crisp. OMG SO good!
(5)Majik M.
The food here is consistently very good. The green curry is excellent (although, as mentioned by another reviewer, it is of soup consistency and is designed to be eaten with lots of rice). Their Kang Panang beef is terrific and their pineapple fried rice is one of my wife's favorites. Their starters are consistently solid and they have a very reasonable lunch special, a lunch curry, soup and Thai salad for a price in the 7 dollar range (it has been a while since I have been for lunch so I am not sure on the exact amount). The service is sometimes rather inconsistent, but it has never been bad. A local business and well worth supporting. A chain Thai restaurant opened up across the street fairly recently but, thankfully, most have recognized that Ruan, while perhaps a bit more homely, serves food of superior quality. (A note. All my reviews take into consideration that this is Tuscaloosa and the options are limited. This is not a five star against a Platonic ideal, but rather against the available dining options.)

I ate here last night for the first time with a couple of friends. Since I had never been, we started with the Thai tray. The crab delights, the spring rolls, and the wontons were pretty awesome. At our table, we had green curry with tofu, red curry with chicken, and Thai fried rice with chicken. All three came perfectly cooked and seasoned. It's pretty inexpensive, and the wait staff was really friendly. Definitely the best Thai restaurant in town. Can't wait to go back.

I want to like this as much as everyone else here does, but it just doesn't knock my noodles off. I mean, I'll go back and stuff, but when I do, I won't expect good service (the servers are consistently spacey), and I won't get the curry again (waaaay too soupy and not content-y enough for my taste). I WILL get the shrimp salad rolls and pad thai, which are always good.

Delicious and Nutritious and LOCAL!

Ruan Thai has been in Tuscaloosa for about 2 or 3 years. Before that we had a Thai/Vietnamese restaurant that was good, sometimes. Ruan Thai is a family-run, authentic Thai restaurant that makes traditional dishes "modified" for American tastes. Mostly, the dishes just are not as hot as they should be, but you can ask them to spice it up if you're brave. The pad thai is great, as is most everything I've had there. I always see people get the pineapple and fried rice, so it's probably good, too. I've only had one dish that wasn't great, but one bad dish out of 30 is nothing to be ashamed of, IMHO. The service is good, and there's a student discount.
(5)Rebecca W.
Ruan beats Surin, hands down. Better prices, better food. Some of the best food on the Strip. Sushi lunch specials on Thursdays. And the Kang Masuman (my favorite on the menu) is delicious. Date night meal runs around $20-30. Highly, highly recommended. They give a student discount, too.
(5)Marissa M.
Without a doubt the best Thai food in Tuscaloosa. Surin West cannot compete with this authentic, Thai restaurant. I love this place!
