This place is one of my favorites. There are plenty of drink specials and different kinds of pizzas to keep you busy. The atmosphere is great... Except for the AC. Since these people that run the place are kinda like hippies, they like to keep the air conditioning off even when it's hot outside and ridiculously humid. Not something I and a fan of. Try the Maui Wowi pizza with red sauce instead of pesto. The jerk chicken is amazing.

The pretzels are really good! The pizza was not bad either. They're good with groups, there were 7 of us when we went and we didn't have to wait for anything.

Had the holy shiitake pizza and it was so good!! For appetizer, I had the spinach and artichoke dip. Yum!! This place is very kid friendly and fun. Really enjoyed the food here.

Although the food isn't great and it takes FOREVER to get served (and seated), I keep going back to this place. I just love the way the restaurant looks! The décor is so funky and it makes me happy. The staff is always friendly and they have a lot of variety, they even offer gluten-free crusts. Just don't go when you're famished because you're going to wait awhile.

I came here several times which a bunch of friends and pizza is always good. They only reason it doesnt get 5 stars is their lack of dessert menu. Pricey but better than Tut's pizza!

I am rarely a fan of chain places, this one is gonna be an exception. The decor is not cookie cutter but has lots of interesting elements including a famous "Big Boy" from another chain restaurant. We were seated in a funky little alcove surrounded by glittering silver streamers our seats were old fashioned double seat gliders painted a bright red (crimson). The servers were nice and extra helpful. We also got to eat with REAL forks and knives (not plastic). The pizza was very good! The Tuscaloosa Mellow Mushroom just might become a regular stop for the McClelands

Excellent food, great pizza, endless variety of draft beers. Only negative is HORRIBLE SERVICE. They need to hire better servers who care about customer service.

Yummy pizza, but tops for the tempeh sandwich

This place is a fun restaurant to go to... it has some things you don't see at other restaurants... very eclectic, fun, LOTS of beer on tap, kinda loud of course, great mosaic murals on outside walls and signs, and the food is really good. I've been to many Mellow Mushrooms while traveling, but this one was my first (awww, how sweet, huh?).

Tried a Medium Mega Veggie Pizza. Was good for 2 people. Great taste. Loved the fact that they had tofu on the pizza. 1 Star less because it was pricey and service was also slow. Went in the afternoon when there was hardly anyone there.

We originally wanted to go to the Italian place next door but unfortunately it was closed due to Labor Day weekend, so we went here instead. I gotta start off by saying I haven't had a decent restaurant in Tuscaloosa among my few visits so this is the best restaurant I've had here. We started with the oven-baked wings. I had four of the ten we ordered and only one was fresh while the other three were stale. It was disappointing since my first wing was so delicious and then the next three all subpar, like eating yesterday's wings. Next we had the Caesars salad and the Greek salad. Caesars salad was flooded with the dressing, a bit too much to be honest. And the Greek salad was fine. On to the Holy Shiitake Mushroom pizza. Man was this delicious. I didn't know what to expect because of our starters, but it did take the cake in the show. When I bit into the piece with the mushroom, it just squirted my mouth with all its fluids... a true foodgasm. I want to give 5 stars for this place but if either the salad or wings were at least somewhat good, I def would have. This is coming from a Yelper who lived in NY for four years. Definitely above average for a chain restaurant. Oven-baked wings - 3/5 Caesar Salad - 2.5/5 Greek Salad - 3.5/5 Holy Shiitake Mushroom Pizza - 5/5 Come here for the pizza (and maybe the wings if they decide to cook them fresh).

All great pizza restaurants have one thing in common--metal utensils. This is the one pizza place that my SO looks forward to, whenever he visits the South. So of course, we had to go to a Mellow Mushroom in nearly every major city in Alabama, with this location being no exception. The service is great. The wait time was a little long but it was what's necessary to make delicious pizza. Remember to display the yelp check-in to get your complimentary bruschetta. Save some room because they won't be giving you some snobby wine bar bite-sized toast. They pile these thick slices of bread with diced tomatoes and vinaigrette. By the time we finished our appetizer, we were nearly too full to even begin on the medium-sized Magical Mystery Tour. I like my pesto-flavored items to have gross amounts of pesto. On a scale of 1-10, this was a 5. There can always be more pesto. Regardless of whatever pizza size you order for however many people, there will always be leftovers to take home.

When ever we visit T Town are daughter has to bring us here for the salads, pizza and a drink or two! The food is good and neat ambiance. Will be back until she graduates since none in Cali. !

This used to be my favorite pizza joint in Ttown. I don't know what's happened but the quality of the food and service has declined significantly in the past year. Cold, undercooked food; orders wrong; allergy requests ignored. Today was my last meal at this MM.

IS THERE A NEGATIVE STAR RATING? UNSANITARY - STAY AWAY!!!. My boyfriend and I went over the July 4th weekend. First his soup came out cold and he found a hair in it--- disgusting. They brought out a new soup and all was well until he ordered an unusual drink which requires Chambord. Low and Behold, I notice bugs yes, DEAD bugs in the drink, To his credit, the bartender readily acknowledged the contamination and got his manager who apologized. They said the Chambord had not been touched in ages and it must have attracted all the little bugs. I could have puked right then. After all this, they served us the bill (about 80 bucks for two) gave us nothing comp'd and we left never eEVER to return. Honestly, the board of health needs to pay a visit. This was an awful experience

Wherever there is a mellow mushroom restaurant I will always stop there to eat they have the best of everything

  • Julian C.

Idunno why but every mellow mushroom I've ever been to has always been slow. Doesn't matter how busy the place is, it seemingly takes ages for the pizza to come out. Usually that wouldn't bother me but the pizza is pretty meh. It's not bad. It's not great. Definitely doesn't warrant the time it takes for it to come out.

This is the worst pizza place in town... And we have some really bad pizza places. Too bad there's no place for negative stars. And to make it worse...it's overpriced. It's overpriced for bad food. And the service is horrible. Don't go here... Unless you like overpaying for mediocre food...

Another visit to another Mellow Mushroom in another city. Same review as last time...awesome pizza, great service at the table. But same problem as last time...if your selling pizza, you have to either bring the pizza to the table properly sliced or bring a pizza cutter or something sharp for me to cut the pizza. Why is this difficult? Little Cesar's can do it, Hungry Howie's can do it. But not the (most delicious) $25 pizza at Mellow. Again the pizza was attempted to be cut but it didn't make it all the way through to the edge of the crust. But they bring a pie scoop as if you should scoop up a slice and throw it on your plate. But instead the whole pie slides off the tray. So you are left to try and saw at the pie slice to separate it. And then you shake the table and spill your beer. Why? I know there must be a sharp pizza cutter in the kitchen. Maybe next time I'll try the burgers they've added to the menu. They sound delicious too!

Great food and great staff! Our hostess Whitney was amazing and super friendly. My pizza was hot and came out very quickly! I was on my lunch break from work and worried about time but this worked out well! Great lunch deals and delicious pizza. Calzones in my experience have been amazing as well. Loved it!

Honestly, earned the the 2 stars due to pretty friendly service. I was hoping the extra dark pizza was their signature and would make the pizza taste amazing. Unfortunately, it was just burnt. Two large burnt pizzas, $40. Wow, I will save my money and go elsewhere next time. Sorry Tuscaloosa, this was a let down.

Bought pizza by the slice and it was so good that went back with the family for some wings and calzones. Can report that all of it was top notch and may be just as good as one of the mellow-mushrooms near your area. Our waitress was too cool and definitely fit the mellow mushroom mold (Julie?). Service was a little slow but you know what we did? We didn't complain. And things turned out just fine.

When in town, Never disappointed with a visit to this pizza place. Food, service and beer is very good. The only negative since it's a popular place you can wait over an hour to be seated sometimes.

I can say that the food is excellent. I love the quality and the quantity of their fare and although it is a bit pricey, it is well worth it. However...service is woefully lacking and speed is at a crawl. The server was pleasant but the staff seemed more interested in talking to each other rather than taking care of customers. Noise level is horrendous; not everyone is interested in listening to the current sports on the television and with the existing music and hard surfaces made for a painfully loud atmosphere. Otherwise it looked very clean with excellent food quality and all in all reasonable pricing. Get the staff more interested in their jobs and turn the volume down so people can converse and it would be perfect.

I have no idea what they put in their crust, but I am buying their "made with spring water" marketing ploy. This one of the best pizza crusts I've ever enjoyed. I've yet to have a pizza I didn't enjoy. I do think it's a bit crowded and loud for my taste so I always got take-out. Just a heads up: 30-45 minutes always means 45 minutes. Maybe 50. Worth the wait though. Great friendly staff.

Had a nice lunch date here today. Ordered the thai-dye and karma krazy pizzas. Both were awesome. We received great service. The music playing in the restaurant was also very good.

This was our first time at Mellow Mushrooms. We ordered Spinach & Artichoke Dip as an Appetizer. For $6.99 the portion was ridiculously small. Tasty, but small. The pizza had a very thin crust. I guess you have to specifically order thicker crust. The pizza tasted great, but again with a high price tag. With a cola, iced tea, two cups of water, appetizer and large 16" pizza we ended up at $38. That's way too expensive. We will not come back here. Been there, done that.

horrible service for mediocre food. screwed up multiple times, no apologies. it was an hour and a half from calling in the order to actually getting the food. no idea how this place is still in business.

So I went to Mellow tonight & let me tell you that was a bad experience. When our group walked in took 10-15 minutes to get greeted. After being told we would be waiting a bit we went to the bar for some premeal drinks. We were greeted by a rude bar staff that obviously were too busy flirting with one another to serve none regulars. While our ID's were being checked the bartender rudely commented about one of our party's ID being near expiration. Why that matters idk, if the ID is valid it is valid. One person in our party ordered a Newcastle & got an Oktoberfest... How does that happen with labeled draft handles? As a bartender I can't explain that mistake with any answer but she didn't care. When we finally moved to our table we had a better experience but certainly not perfect. Our server Sarah was great but she can't make up for the fact that my dessert was burnt then remade & burnt again. It took 45 min to get said dessert, that is crazy. Another person in our party ordered pretzels at the same time & it took over an hour to get them. Also, the bartender got another beer clearly wrong. This time we got a blue moon for a sweet water blue. I will not be coming back to Mellow. Sincerely, Someone who used to love your restaurant.

If you are looking for a delicious carbo-loading meal and an Aristotle, atmospheric place to dine-in, then Mellow is a great spot to go. Located in historic downtown Tuscaloosa just outside the campus, this hip bakery is prime for night life. If being cooped up inside isn't what you had in mind after a long day in the office, then by all means request a table on the patio. The patio contains iron tables replete with sturdy chairs and an umbrella. It also is street-side, so you can enjoy the local life while dining on scrumptious chow. Want to get away from the kids? Or, in the mood to "mellow" things out? Then leisure on upstairs to the open bar which includes all the local brews. Pizza is just the fortaste of their art. With a thick wheat-based crust accented with garlic and Parmesan, this dough is a perfect backdrop for all of Mellow's funky menu items. The restaurant itself has a "groovy" flair of its own that parallels the psychedelic food which includes: massively piled pizzas, stuffed calzones and hoagies. With three different sizes of pizza to choose from, everyone can get their fill. A large pizza (16") would easily feed 4 people, while the personal (10") is great for a burly man, or a date for two. The restaurant is often busy, especially at night, so the service is good for the amount of people inside. Every Mellow restaurant has a style of its own, but one common philosophy: "To provide you with an experience filled with colorful art, eclectic music and food that comforts your soul." So if you want the best pizza in town, then slide over to downtown and enjoy the funk at Mellow Mushroom.

Definitely my favorite place to get pizza in T-town! My boyfriend and I have been several times and have loved everything so far! The hummus appetizer is amazing! My favorite pizza is probably the Funky-Q Chicken

OK, I am poaching a little on another review I wrote for another Mellow Mushroom. This MM is large, the bar is great and has great beer selections served (in my experience) by people who know their beer. This place has a great feel. Lunch is good here, where you can get a slice and a salad. Just right. This is a small chain, but you would never guess it. The two differnt I have visited each have their own character. Lots of options as far as pizza toppings, and they are quality. The crust is excellent. This pizza is well done, er, that is done well, and I would call unusual in one way, it is not heavy. I can count a handful of pizzas that I have had in the country that are not heavy. This is good. You will not go wrong if you go on Tuesday for Quiz Night...they call it trivia night. What a blast! Especially with a beer...or maybe two.

I try to frequent mellow mushroom as my in-town pizza place. The dough is actually hand made, not just brought in like other chain places, and the whole grain crust is really a treat. The pre-designed pizzas are well thought out and cooked to perfection, although I typically end up making my own. The best part about coming here, though, is the beer, the pretzels (seriously, order some!), and trivia on Tuesday nights. I would give this 5 stars, but I'm still pretty bummed that they don't have shows upstairs like they used to. Other than that, all around a good night out for pizza.

Mellow's location in T-town is always buzzing with activity. I've been on average weeknights and UA football home game weekends, and the place is usually packed. Seating varies from tables to booths to a bar, with spots inside, outside and in an upper level with some private group rooms available. I went to a recruiting event in one of the rooms upstairs, and that was a pretty good experience too. The pizzas and calzones are delicious--just be prepared to wait for a while as they make it fresh in the back. If you get a spot where you can watch the pizza bakers at work, their dough-tossing antics are pretty cool to see. The Hawaiian is always a good choice, and a basic cheese calzone is an excellent fall-back should the numerous combination options become too overwhelming. The service is friendly and helpful in spite of the crowds, and it's just an all-around fun and laid-back place to hang out and have a relaxed meal as a couple or with a group of friends.

During the past week my roommates and I attended Mellow Mushroom on University for the first time to see what the dining experience would be like. I had ordered take out from there before and the pizza was delicious out of the cardboard box, but I wanted to have a first hand experience. Even though some people may say that Mellow Mushroom is a little pricey and out of the way, I think it is well worth the trip for the tasty food, friendly service, and psycadelic atmosphere. Let me just say I have never been to a pizza place quite like this one before. From the minute you drive up you know it's not going to be a boring experience, no matter whom you are with. I mean how could it be boring with a bedazzled, mosaic elephant above the door. I went with my teammates one weekend and we were greeted then seated at a table that was covered in pictures from different countries, which on my side of the table looked like mostly Southeast Asia. I was facing the window so I didn't get to soak up all of the decorations while socializing, but I did catch my one of my roommates looking very intrigued by what she saw. I then turned around to see multi-colored tiki stands, dinosaur bar stools, a life size betty boop and bob's big boy, and more. I don't think there was a piece of wall uncovered by pictures and colors of who knows what, but it certainly was entertaining. We were then greeted by our waitress who was very friendly and on top of things. She didn't have a problem getting us what we wanted or needed in a timely manner. Then again we were only one of three tables that were occupied. Except for that she gave me a root beer instead of a Mr.Pibb, but I didn't complain, I think she just knows what is best for me because it hit the spot. However, I do not think this reflected the quality of the restaurant. When driving by Monday through Saturday night this place is normally packed, I have also heard numerous stories of people waiting considerable amounts of time for this delicious pizza. I believe there weren't many people because it was around six o'clock on a Sunday evening, which is usually when the college students are working on their homework and doing other things to prepare for the week ahead. Since I have moved to Tuscaloosa, 2 months ago, I have not eaten at many different pizza places. But I have eaten at a lot of pizza places during my lifetime, and Mellow Mushroom is at the top of my list. They have a wide variety of different kinds of specialty pizzas that they make. The pizzas are very diverse in their choices. For example they had two lists for toppings, one for fruits and vegetables and the other for meats. Either one of them were long enough to pass as a list for all the toppings at a pizza place. Another good thing about the Mellow Mushroom is that they serve their pizza on a wheat crust, but if it didn't look like it, you would never guess. The crust is still nice and fluffy and even a little sweet. My favorite part about the menu comes from a sign on the door that says gluten free. I personally am not gluten intolerant, but my sister is and I know how much she misses eating pizza. When something comes gluten free I think I get more excited than she does. There has been a lot mentioned about the pizza at Mellow Mushroom, however that is not the only thing they serve. They also serve salads, calzones, sandwiches, soups, and a variety of tasty appetizers. When visiting Mellow Mushroom my friend ordered a calzone. These calzone are not any ordinary calzones. They are massive and over flowing with all the goodness and delicious toppings mentioned on the pizza menu. Another favorite amongst our friends is the Mushroom Sandwich. Once again we were not expecting the massive sandwich that was about to be placed on the table. If you are not in the mood for a huge heavy meal Mellow Mushroom also has a wide variety of salads, including side salads. I have only tried their side salads, which are very good so I am assuming their dinner salads are even better. The innovative and creative flare they put on each entrée they serve is part of what makes ordering something at Mellow Mushroom so exciting. It is so exciting because you know whatever you order whether it be pizza or a salad, it is going to be different and appetizing. Mellow Mushroom's welcoming atmosphere, creative food, and bright curb appeal all play a part in their growing popularity throughout campus and Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa's self-proclaimed "home for local music." Under NEW management now, vow to bring in more touring acts. Great FOOD downstairs, even BETTER BAR upstairs.

One of the few bars downtown that actually has good local music. Always enjoy a good trip downtown to see Sparrow & The Ghost play. Plus there pizza is great and their beer selection is top notch for Tuscaloosa.

Decent pizza, nothing to write home about. Service was okay but could have been a little quicker. A large pizza probably would suffice for 3-4 people.

  • Ryan D.

The food takes a while to get to your table, so order a salad or something to hold you over. The pizza is okay. The best part was dipping the crust in esperanza salad dressing. The root beer was awesome, and even more awesome was the free refills.

I am not a fan of pizza or any pizza like food buty wife talked me into goin to mellow mushroom and I was very impressed by the atmospher at lunch time they make the most delicious calzone jerked chicken and shroom I detested the things till that day. I eat them very rarley but here is the place I go for them

  • Justin R.

Pretty pricey, but your meal will often feed you the next day if you remember to pack it up (my typical calzone, with chicken and jalepenos, cuts in half quite nicely). Vegetarian-sensitive, more so than many Tuscaloosa establishments. The upstairs bar has lots of potential, though the beer selection below is just as healthy.

    (4)
  • Julie R.

I love the Tuscaloosa Mellow Mushroom! The space is really nice, always clean, energetic, and just plain cool (which is wayyy more than what I can say about the location in Birmingham.) Their calzones and pizzas are delish, they usually have great deals on certain beers, and the bar upstairs is great!

    (4)
  • Rebecca W.

Fun atmosphere, as long as you're cool with folks who (intentionally?) look like stoners making your pizza. Food is consistently good, but if you're in a hurry, find somewhere else. They have lots of alternative toppings that you might not find elsewhere, so you can get creative with your pizza. The small pizza is perfect for me and a friend, and ends up costing us less than 6 bucks each. Not bad. Also, they host some awesome bands upstairs. Warning: If you're looking for a quiet place to eat, this is not the place. There's always music blaring.
