As a Yankee northerner, when I travel down south, Waffle House is an essential. Cheap, tasty, greasy food, eaten on a bar stool with an endless cup of black coffee. And the folks working there are almost inevitably good for a conversation when you're traveling alone. Of course, it's a chain, so to review every single one would be idiotic. So why did I choose the one in Springville, Alabama? Because I don't think any other Waffle House will ever treat me as well as this one did. I was learning to hang glide for the first time out at Lookout Mountain for the weekend, and decided to take a drive down to Birmingham, because it was only a couple of hours away, to check it out. On my way back, I felt a bit peckish, so I needed to find somewhere to stop. The old standby Waffle House made perfect sense. I like traveling alone a lot, but sometimes the lack of conversation does finally get a little old. Sitting at the counter at this Waffle House, though, gave me plenty of conversation. Everyone working there was hilarious and amiable, and I actually chose to stay there even longer than I needed to just because I was enjoying myself so much. Two thumbs up to the Springville, AL Waffle house. These people know how to treat a customer.

My wife and I have been a regular customer of this Waffle House for some time. We average once a week. I'm compelled to write a review this time, because something needs to change. There were all new faces when we arrived this evening and it went down hill from there. The waitress greeted us with an attitude and made us aware that she would try to take our drink order but would have to get back with us to take our actual food order. She informed us tersely that she needed to take care of another order and that she was already running behind. Why she was compelled to tell us we're not sure. At any rate, the place was less packed than usual and there were three workers behind the counter. We've seen it run better with only two workers. Our coffee arrived at room temperature and it was blamed on the back burner. We were made to feel like we were asking for the moon just to get a fresh cup. I ordered my usual cheese and eggs which comes standard with raisin toast. When I brought to the attention of the waitress they had placed regular toast on my plate, she started to argue but then simply walked off. Needless to say I never got my raisin toast. Two couples got up from different tables before getting their meals and also made comments about the poor service and the waitress's attitude as they departed. The lady behind the counter that seemed to be in charge didn't bat an eye at their negative comments. I hope someone with Waffle House reads this review and gets involved. We won't be back until this Waffle House is back on track.
