Just experienced the worst attitude from a waitress who walked up to take our order with the worst attitude I've experienced. When I ask her what the specials were, she responded "their ain't no special" Absolutely disappointing for this restaurant!

We were driving through Alabama on our way to Florida and wanted to stop for some good southern food. I found Martins and I am so glad we stopped. We had the famous fried chicken which was moist juicy hot crispy crunchy and seasoned perfectly!!! We also had the black eyed peas, rice with gravy, creamed corn, string beans, turnip greens, cheesy grits, authentic cornbread muffins and washed it all down with a couple of sweet teas!!! My hubby and two youngin's were mmmm mmmm mmmming throughout the meal. I was in serious need of southern comfort food and Martin's delivered! It's a long drive from California but totally worth it.

Incredible is all that can be said for this restaurant and the team inside. My wife and I had Fried Chicken (meat and three and also met and three Meatloaf. I cant say enough staff was wonderful food was unmatched. KUDOS to them for the coconut cream pie WOW.

Stopped here on the way from New Orleans to Atlanta, and it made me miss living in the South so much! I had sweet tea and a vegetable plate with cabbage, string beans, turnip greens and mashed potatoes. Only in the South can a vegetable plate not make you wish you had ordered fried chicken instead. The cornbread is also worth mentioning - crispy and salty and buttery (more so after I slathered on the extra butter provided at the table). We didn't have any room left for dessert!

If you're looking for a true southern food place, Martin's is it. The decor consists of awards touting their food and desserts and the furniture with its checkered tablecloths are reminiscent of gramma's home. Service is quick and über friendly. Meals are heavy and huge, while the prices are light on the wallet. Overall, okay food but worth the experience. The eats: - sweet tea--free with your meal. I highly recommend asking for half unsweetened and half sweetened. - Meat and Three $10: choose a main and three heaping sides. Mine's was dryish turkey plus stuffing with the most delicious string beans cooked in ham hock, the all-right tasting gravy over rice, and the overly sweet salad medley of marshmallows, strawberries, and nuts. - Pecan pie $3 -- all slices are fairly large and pretty good (or so it seems). They have choices ranging from merengue to apple and more. Our slice was "to go". Ain't bad at all. Parking is plenty as it resides in a shopping center. Should you find yourself trotting through Alabama's capital, this might be the place to stop on in and experience the South.

Definitely one of the five best fried chicken meals I've ever had, served hot with great service.

Two piece white meat fried chicken with cabbage, green beans and black eyed peas - delicious !! Place is old school with everything dated and clearly this is a local favorite haunt. But you are missing out if you don't try them. Portions were generous. Fried chicken was cooked perfect and frankly I never ate black eyed peas before but were yummy! Complementary corn bread and fresh fried homemade Pork rinds were nice; however, I am not a "pork rind" gal but they were in demand. Additionally. Sweet tea was free with meal !! Waitress was sweet and I highly recommend you give it a chance - all that for $10 !

At the very last minute we dashed into Martins to grab a bite to eat. It was fantastic! The main dish was their fried chicken and it didn't disappoint! It was crispy and very flavorful. Their sides were not over seasoned and the stuffing reminded me of my Mom's stuffing! We finished by buying three slices of pie, Coconut, Lemon and Sweet Potato, all three were winners. The service was attentive and easy to interact with... Looking forward to going back again!

On a few recommendations, I swung by here for lunch. "You like Meat and Three?" I was asked. "Ummm...excuse me?" I replied. Fried chicken, mac 'n' cheese, turnip greens, blackeyed peas, cornbread, chocolate meringue pie. Now tell me if your mouth is watering and you'll realize why I don't need to go into detailed explanation. Great staff, casual atmosphere, amazing food. Simply put: EAT HERE.

really good for meat and three. huge portions and most every thing I've ordered has been good. Been a fan for years.

Good southern fried chicken. Friendly service with a local feel. The cornbread was yummy. The chicken was definitely the highlight though - oh and the pie was delicious too!
(4)Wayne K.
Cool place with the kind of ambience that matches perfectly the kind of food they serve. Chicken, fried Okra, cole slaw, rice and gravy, bread pudding was plenty good and serving size was just right for a 6ft/200lb dude. I am not but I can eat like one and it was plenty enough. The price is right and the service is all "Southern hospitality." This place is good for families and medium/large groups. We had a group of 18 and everyone ordered the Meat and Three. I just wish that they served beer!!!

First time in Montgomery and I had read the reviews about this establishment. The fried chicken was so good and the cole slaw was the best I have ever had. The waitress was so sweet, she even brought us a piece of pie to try. This is soul food at its finest. A must try and so inexpensive.

Super Fried Chicken Martin's has been a Montgomery "meat & 3" restaurant serving folks for many years. And it's easy to see why. It's all about the food. The restaurant is located in an unpromising strip center. Inside are a bunch of tables covered in plastic, checked tablecloths. Service is perfunctory. So the food better be good! The best deal is the meat & 3 (a meat and three side dishes) or a veg plate of 4 sides. I had the fried chicken which was marvelous. The batter was the perfect mix of spices finishing with a great salty tang. Inside, the meat was amazingly tender. Wow! The sides were a mix of hits and misses. The greens and mashed potatoes were very good, pickled beets and green beans were fine, and the cheese grits were tasteless. Oh, well. Everything can't be great. The biscuits and cornbread were really good. I would return any time for some more of that great fried chicken.

This was my second visit to this homey Montgomery legendary restaurant. I ordered fried chicken and picked green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and steamed rutabaga as my three sides. The chicken was crispy, juicy and delicious. Likely will remain in my 10 best list. The sides are good. Solid, not special. I finished with a piece of coconut cream pie with merengue. Unnecessarily sweet, should be topped with whipped cream. Still pretty tasty. Great service and fair prices. I love this place and will surely return next time I am in town.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of dining at Martin's. I enjoyed a great fried chicken lunch! This evening, my mother and I ordered dinners from this venerable Alabama institution. We still love it! Martin's is well-known for its terrific food and humble service. We love it and always will!
(4)Eddie L.
Always welcomed! It's always busy so get there early. They have the best fresh fried pork skins. I recommend the fried chicken, okra, cabbage, and rice and gravy. I'm currently working in Montgomery and live in Georgia and its always good to find a "meat and 3" that's as good as home cooking!
(5)Michelle S.
Not as good as reviews. Okay fried chicken and good green beans. Cabbage and cole slaw average. Pretty average overall . Didn't have dessert. Prices were very reasonable and tea included.
(3)Lucia H.
Seriously, best fried chicken I've ever had. I'm a Northerner so I haven't had too much fried chicken, but this once made me feel things I never have before. I wish it didn't close so early! But then again I'm glad it closes early, so I don't succumb to temptation and go every day. Other than their fried chicken, their corn muffins and green beans are super delicious. What are you waiting for? Get to Martin's before closing time!!

Fried chicken was excellent. Staff was very friendly.

I really like this place. I'm sure Robert Irvine would not give the decor a pass, as it's difficult to tell what the original color of the carpet was and the place hasn't been updated in years, but I'm also sure that the good people of Montgomery couldn't care less. It's all about the food, and the food is good. I've had the fried chicken on both of my visits here and it's wonderfully crispy outside and succulent inside. The corn bread muffins that come to the table are delicious; it required an act of will for me to eat only one, but I wanted to save room for what was to follow. They give you plenty of food here and the sides are good...not the best I've had, but everything was tasty. I went with the mashers and gravy, green beans and black eyed peas and was satisfied. The only thing I missed on my return was the chow-chow they had on the table during my first visit; it was yummy and obviously homemade. The waitress let me know that they serve it seasonally, so sometimes they have it and sometimes not. Service is friendly and informal.

The people here were so nice. Not just the staff, but the patrons as well. I dropped by here on a cross-country trip and this is when I knew I was in the South. I came by on a Sunday, when the Church crowd had just came in. Great chicken, incredible candied yams, and the best chocolate pie I've ever had in my life. But I will remember it for how welcoming the people were.

Cornbread, Fried Chiken, Mac and Cheese, Rice and Beans, and plaid table top cover. As a Montgomery transplant, I had most fun visitng Martins restaurant. Place was packed on Sunday after noon ( after church service). I posted the menu on the pic section to give you the general idea about what they serve at this restaurant. Decor. 4/5 - for uniqueness Wood grain panels, cashier on the front, unfinised wooden bench, and plastic checker pattern table cloth. If they told me they shot "Dukes of Hazzard" here, I would believe it. Unique experieance. Food 3.8/5 I had their fried chiken. the skin was crisp and well seasoned. my side items came in heafy portion and I left the place with full stomach for sure. I had a high expectation for their corn bread.. but I think M&M Soul Food IN Inglewood,CA have better Corn Bread. Parking 5/5 I'm used to writing Parking section.. it's old habit from writing L.A. reviews. there is ample parking lot, as the restaurant share the parking lot witha grocery store. parking is no prob.

It was lunch time and I didn't have nearly as much time as I thought I had or needed for a sit-down restaurants. I really started to sweat once I ordered the fried chicken, because I know it can take a while, but what was I supposed to do? You have to get the fried chicken. Luck was smiling down upon me that day, because Martin's is well-versed in the business lunch. My meat and three came out within ten minutes, and it was just about the most perfect fried chicken you could ever hope to achieve - crazy crunchy skin with juicy meat, and even if I burned my tongue several times on the nuclear-hot bird, it was worth it. The meat was great, though the three were less so - run-of-the-mill mac and cheese and long beans, pretty good greens. They even price the food so with tax it comes to an even $10. Martin's saved me that lone, hungry day, and not without giving me some of the best fried chicken I've had in a long time.

This is what Southern cooking is all about. The meat and three portions are crazy generous. The fried chicken? Unbelievable. The atmosphere is casual and the service is quick and friendly. The location could be a little better, but this place is a Montgomery staple and it ain't going anywhere. Thank God for that!

Food: Martins famous fried chicken - had great batter 4 Pineapple and cheese casserole - good 4 String beans were just ok 3 Mash potatoes n gravy tasted like the fake kind out of the box. 2 BBQ ribs 3 Fried okra - 2 Sweet tea - not the sweet southern tea I'm used to and it had an Interesting aftertaste - 1 Service ok - not as friendly as all the reviews say. But maybe they aren't used to asians in their area. 2 Didn't have much to complain about but nothing to rave about either.

Passing through going back to Atlanta. Looking for a lunch spot. Great got here at 11am place already packed. Got the Sunday lunch special fried chicken and 3 sides $9.25 great deal big portions. Make sure you save room for the pie

Seriously, what is the hype? We were completely underwhelmed by this place after reading all the great reviews. The food was not as good as I had hoped. The famous fried chicken was okay but the sides were the biggest disappointment. The mashed potatoes tasted like it was instant. Many of the veggies seemed like it came out of a can. The pineapple casserole was weird. And the fried green tomatoes were inedible, it was hard as a rock. The cornbread was a highlighter yellow color and tasteless. The biscuits were pretty good, probably bisquick. On top of all that, the atmosphere and service was quite stiff. We will probably not go back. Sad, we had high hopes for this local joint.

Want Fried Chicken? Fantastic chicken, even if a little more salty than I like it. 5 stars. Sides? Not so hot for me. 3 stars. And that's where I fall off. I wish there was a 3.5 stars avenue to take. So I'll round to 4. This is a Southern restaurant with a Southern food selection - you'd be remiss to not stop by if you are just passing through Montgomery, or Alabama, or the Deep South. Sweet tea is excellent, as should be at any Southern restaurant. Staff is friendly and on top of things, even when busy. They've been around for forever, and I'm sure they'll be here for years to come.

I would sell my momma to eat that fried chicken every day!!!!

... we've since had Mrs. B's. go to Mrs. B's instead... same food style, carry out, but scrumptious.

I hope I can eat here again some day! Loved this place...

Having seen first hand the damage the Waffle House can do to someone, I always choose my southern eating places carefully. Earlier in the day I received a text from Grace making fun of me for being 2,000 miles away from Ad Hoc's fried chicken night. Because of this, I was determined to get some real southern fried chicken. Lucky for me, Martin's specializes in fried chicken. While I haven't yet tried Mr. Keller's chicken at Ad Hoc, I can say that he's got his work cut out for him if he wants to compete with Martin's. Finding Martin's was a little tricky. I asked the concierge at the hotel how to get there. Archie: So you say I pass the Winn Dixie and the Sonic after the 6 churches? Concierge: Yes sir. But don't go past the 6th church, there are 4 more after that. It's easy though. Archie: Easy? How so? Concierge: Well, it goes Protestant, Lutheran, Methodist, Jesuit, Bapist and then it repeats with Protestant so once you pass the 2nd protestant, you're there. Archie: Sweet. What makes a place 5 star worthy? The food? The service? Of course. But another 5 star quality is intangible. It's that feeling you get when you are in a uniquely local place. A place that you know that if you lived around the corner, you would be go nightly. A place where you want to call every member of the staff an aunt or a grandma. A place where everyone genuinely wants you to enjoy the food because they are proud of their little slice of heaven. This is Martin's. While I don't get to Montgomery that often, if I do come back, I will be coming to Martin's again for that seriously ridiculous fried chicken. Home.

I was not impressed with this place. As soon as we walked in the hostess greeted us with a smile and a hello but, as soon as I said hello back her smile turned into a frown. I can only assume she was unhappy because I was not a local. The Midwestern accent clearly gave me away. From there we had an extremely unfriendly waitress who did not bother to collect a single plate off our table the entire meal. Our food was mediocre. The fried chicken was crispy but, little flavor. Mashed potatoes and gravy were nothing to write home about (I think they were instant). The pineapple cheese casserole was gross and the fried peach pie was hot in spots and frozen in others. My kids did like their chicken tenders and fries but, they always do. The only good thing we had was the fried okra but, to be honest I don't think I have ever had bad fried okra and the locals were cool. The hostess was very friendly to them and seemed to know a lot of people there. I would recommend Dreamland BBQ instead. We went there for lunch the next day and had the complete opposite experience.

Best on Sundays, but if you don't go to church first, do take out or feel guilty for being in casual clothes when the church folk walk in. Corn bread is great and I get broccoli and cheese for ALL three of my sides. I always go with the fried chicken.

When I think fried chicken, I think Southern cooking (even though there are Asian cultures that have mastered fried chicken too). And when I think Southern cooking, I think of excessive carbs, fried okra, and cornbread (you are damn right I am going to eat my cornbread). This is what I went to Martin's restaurant to eat and this is exactly what I ate. In the words of some dead Roman, I came, I saw, I ate too much. Ambiance (4): If I had a Southern grandma, this is what I imagine her kitchen would look like; fake fruit, old school Americana paintings (including one of a family praying prior to supper), and little tables covered in you guessed it, checkered plastic tablecloths. You came to visit grandma, so just sit down and eat your big plate of food. If it was a stylish sterile environment, the food would not taste as good, trust me. Food (5): Southern grandmas take care of their kin. Roll call! Mashed potatoes with gravy: plain and simple, not one of those dressed up types, but this is one of the basic food groups of Southern cuisine so there is no way of circumventing this carb foundation. Unless of course you get the potato salad which was damn tasty (quick shout out to Publix's southern potato salad, you are still my preferred deli picnic pick up). Fried okra: made to order goodness, not greasy at all. Where else besides Church's Chicken are you going to get this stuff? Cornbread: dense like the Incredible Hulk, was a little disappointed but the whipped butter helped. Basically, it's not bad, it's more a style preference. Lemonade: I swear the lemon's citric acid must be a base after being mugged by all that sugar (not that I am certain where sugar lies in pH scale). I am not complaining and neither are the lesser gods of diabetes. This was mighty tasty and I heard the sweet tea was just as sugar packing. And finally, fried chicken (two thighs). The fried chicken was juicy with a wonderful crunchy skin and once you add some hot sauce it's at the apex of fried chickendom. Darwin talked about variation and natural selection and this chicken is the real evolutionary deal. There was nothing I could think of to make that chicken better and it really tied the whole meal into a nice package with a bow on top. Of course after this meal, I had some health concerns so don't make this a weekly meal ritual! Service (3): A little dry at first and all business, our waitress did make sure we got what we needed and was hospitable in an unspoken sort of way by the end. Value (5): A ton of food, no room for dessert, and we came in around 10 bucks. Can I give this place a 6? Overall: I loved this place. The food was amazing thanks to that chicken and I will definitely make it top priority next time I am in town to stop in. If you like fried chicken or other Southern staples like catfish and pecan pie, this is the place for you.
