The atmosphere is comfortable, but not fancy. Avoid the booths. They are more private, but are also quite uncomfortable. The food here is very good. Service is excellent, top notch. Servers are friendly, informed and attentive without being intrusive. You can have a very good dinner here. Yes, you'll pay $$$, but City Grill is worth it. City Grill is not frou-frou fancy, but it's comfortable. Some folks come in a bit more dressed up, others are pretty casual. We've had two great meals here. From appetizers to mains to desserts, everything here is very good! This is my number once choice in Montgomery (above True & Central). Other restaurants in Montgomery should take a note from the chef & staff at City Grill. Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Value for $$: 5/5 Will I return: Yes! Would I recommend City Grill: Yes

Wow! City Grill does not disappoint. Excellent food and excellent service. Highly recommended.

It is a bit overpriced. I liked it but the other two in our party were not impressed.

I had a group of 14 who needed a quiet private dining room where we could have a discussion before dinner over drinks and appetizers...Terri organized this perfectly for me from afar (we were visiting Montgomery from Florida)...the service was impeccable---and friendly!...and convoluted payment options were handled without a grumble..wine and other drinks flowed effortlessly ...and the food pleased the group (which includes a bevy of foodies) ...I can echo an earlier review that the fried oyster salad was excellent...it was tried by several in the group...we ordered a wide variety of dishes and there was a general air of satisfaction...we got wrapped up and good fashion and off to the Shakespeare Festival performance on time!!

The Hampstead still has a lot of work to do, but it's good to see places like City Grill having already taken up root. My experiences with fine dining in this city have been pretty touch and go, but it usually comes down to a matter of value. If I'm going to spend twenties of dollars for an entree, I want to know there's some technical skill going into it. A chicken might not seem like the most elegant protein for a meal, but there is quite a bit of technical finesse in cooking an entire bird, and the half poussin I ordered - partly because it's fun to say "poussin" - was a fairly well-done balance of the white and dark meat along with the crispiness of the skin. It was also a pretty freaking large portion for one person - I was served half of a four pound bird, leaving me to figure out how to best attack the thing with my knife and fork. After half an hour, I just went to town using my hands. The passage of time has me forgetting everything about that meal other than the bird itself, which is probably a testament to City Grill and a reason why it's worth making the trip - it's a Montgomery restaurant that not only understands what goes into fine dining, but gives you ample portions for the money.

My husband and I had dinner at City Grill on Wed night (12/29). It doesn't look like much from the outside since it's in a strip mall. When we walked in, the green pleather booths also caused us some alarm. But the lighting was low, the restuarant was clean so we stayed and I'm glad that we did. City Grill is a small town restaurant that offers fine dining done right. My husband and I shared the pear and gorgonzola salad to start. It was delicious and perfectly dressed. The server also brought us bread which was unremarkable. My husband and I had the gorgonzola crusted filet. It was really tasy and perfectly cooked. It came with a homemade steak sauce, which we requested on the side. It was served warm and reminiscent of a balsamic dressing since it was olive oil based. I would pass on the steak sauce next time, not because it wasn't tasty but because I prefer a heartier steak sauce or none at all.The menu said the filet was served with asparagus....it did; 4 spears of asparagus. That struck me as odd since there are not any ala carte sides listed on the menu. For dessert we shared the pear tart served over melted vanilla ice cream. Our server explained that the dessert takes about 20 minutes to prepare so she offered dessert a little early. I was glad that she did though.Other dessert offerings included a sea salt and caramel cheesecake that sounded dvine. There were other options but that one stuck out in my mind. The pear tart was delicious! We will definately be back to City Grill the next time we visit Montgomery.

A favorite. Great food now in a nicer location at Hampstead. Salted caramel cheesecake and tuna Napoleon are outstanding.

We had the sweetest waitress on Friday night. We went about 6:00pm, and it was not crowded at all. The food was fantastic, we had the scallops as an appetizer. My husband had the shrimp and grits, which was the best cheese grits I've ever had. I had the beet salad and crab cake appetizer together as my entree. The only reason why its 4 stars, is for the bread. Don't really like sourdough. The price point and the portions are not what you usually get at the chain restaurants, which was PERFECT for me. You get what you pay for. I absolutely love this place.

We went here for Valentine's Day and I must say I was impressed. The service wonderful. She was amazingly informative even with the rush of the busy day.

The restaurant is in a strip mall, it is quiet, clean and good for a nice dinner. The appetizer crab cake was small, it had 1 shrimp and 1 wedge of avocado, the remoulade was good, maybe a little vinegary. I had the cowboy ribeye, it was pepper crusted and was supposed to be medium rare, it was more rare. That was OK for me and I know just how difficult it is to make a large steak MR without burning the outside, the side was housemade shoe string taters that were good and not greasy ? twice fried. My friend had the prime rib - interestingly it came without a starch. We had a prosecco with dinner that was acceptable. For dessert we had creme brulee which was excellent. OVerall food quality was very good, service was appropriate, no screaming kids - even better, but for the fare overpriced. If prices were more modest this would be a 4-5 star restaurant.

The chef a City Grill consistently put out the finest food on the east side... and he's in contention for the best in the city. He makes very imaginative sauces that accentuate the freshest and finest cuts of everything from duck to filet mignon to halibut or escolar. I always start with the crab cakes app, served with roasted red pepper pure and jalapeno tartar sauce. The Zinfandel braised short ribs, only on the specials menu, is the best dish I've ever had at a restaurant. A must for anyone visiting Montgomery, and great for us locals, too!

City Grill and Next Door (the bar next door with the same kitchen) are my favourite two places in Montgomery. I'm a bit partial due to its location and the people that work there, but I think these two places are the best for slightly up-scale dining in Montgomery. The menu usually includes some steaks, some local dishes like the really good shrimp and grits, some experimental dishes like the strangely good grilled european cheese salad, and fresh fish as nightly specials. The wait staff is very friendly and does an excellent job. City Grill is definately not a chain and does not have a tremendous wait. It does not have a dress code per se, but you will usually find the men with at least a sport coat on and many with ties also.

Went with brother & sister-in-law last night...., wow! I had scallops appetizer which were perfectly prepared. Calamari which were so fresh , lightly breaded - terrific! Cowboy steak, huge & grilled to perfection. For dessert, I can't remember what it was called, but man, oh man! I was informed they are all delicious. The decor, with it's clean lines, soothing palette & spacious dining areas relaxes the patrons. The chef/owner, John prepares each dish. If you are in the Montgomery area, I suggest you check them out!
