Went on Friday night and it was very crowded but only had a short wait. Service was very good, and the food was excellent. Owner was there and very nice. A little more expensive than I like, but a good place to go for special occasions.

Great music for starters. Got a dozen raw oysters as an appetizer, they were very fresh, and I actually got a baker's dozen. I think they just fit as many as they can on the tray. The entree's all around the table got good reviews by my friends, and we had a little bit of everything. One thing worth mentioning separately is their cole slaw! Wow, it may be the best slaw I've ever had! I talked to the owner and he told me they make it with apple cider vinegar. Great! One more thing, don't let the neighborhood and the driveway fool you or scare you away, the inside has great atmosphere and great people. Check it out!

I would not have even known about this place had it not been for a recommendation. I would definitely come back. I'm not an oyster connoisseur, but hey, they were fresh and local. In late March, they added up to be about a $1/oyster (market price). Love the outdoor seating area. The amberjack was not overcooked, grilled perfectly, and seasoned wonderfully. Next time grab a group and buy a bushell of oysters. I will explore that option next time.

Tried to check this place out when we first arrived in Montgomery. Couldn't find it and the area we were at didn't seem like the right place for a restaurant. Well fast forward a year and a half and we decided to give it a try. Turned out we were in the right place on our first try. Area is definatly off the beaten path and when driving there at night if you don't know where you are going it can be confusing. Went inside to find a nice little seafod shack with what looked to be patio seating as well and a full bar. Ordered the shrimp poboy with fries and slaw, seafood gumbo, 1/2 dozen raw and 1/2 dozen steamed oysters. The shrimp poboy was good if a little light on the shrimp and the slaw was excellent. Not your usual mayo slaw which I liked. The seafood gumbo was really good made with conecuh sausage. The oysters were the real treat of the night though. Largest oysters Iv had since being here. They were great. All and all we will be back.

This place sets the scene. On the river, a back deck overlooking the water, and good people. The food is good, the service is nice, and the price is right. Et there early for outdoor seating. I do t like oysters, but everything else on the menu is very good.

We were able to find this place with our GPS easily, but I heard it could be a little difficult to find without good directions or a GPS. From the outside it honestly looks like a run down shack so before walking in I was already skeptical of the place. When we walked in, it looked like your typical bar and grill. We sat out back on their porch since it was a nice evening and had a nice view of the river. Our waitress was so nice and very attentive. We ordered drinks and two po' boys and split them; one was shrimp and the other was grilled tilapia; We both liked the grilled tilapia better. Hubby also got the oysters Rockefeller which he loved. Good food, nice view, and loved the outdoor seating!

Definitely a hole in the wall joint a little off the beaten path. It's a nice location adjacent to the river with ample outdoor deck seating. The shrimp is fantastic and comes in at least three different peel and eat varieties. Served up with ample butter. The raw oysters and oysters Rockefeller are also a treat. There are plenty of beers on tap from large industry breweries to local craft beer. They have a full service bar too, if you are in the mood for something stiffer than beer. The service was outstanding, and our table was never left wanting anything. My only beef was that they wanted us to pay an additional ten bucks cover charge for a band that played in the early evening if we happened to stay that long. We'd already spent quite a bit there and felt it was unnecessary for them to insist on it. Otherwise great experience.

When we arrived, my husband ( who is way more of an adventurous eater than I) didn't want to go in! Parking's on the back side & it doesn't look pretty! On our way in, the chef showed us some fresh Amberjack that had just arrived. The food was good & the patio is fantastic. The cicadas were drowning out the music!

Great peel & eat shrimp! My husband had the ribeye, which was huge and cooked exactly as ordered. Also had home cooked Southern veggies-yellow squash & onions & cabbage-also delicious.

Was down in Montgomery visiting my boyfriend's family and we decided to come here on a Sunday afternoon to listen to some live jazz/blues music and get some oysters. YUM! The food was good, service was prompt and laid back, the music was good, and the Alabama River was perfect in the background. It's perfect for a chill night down by the riverfront! We were seated promptly out back and around 5ish, there was a live band playing some good jazzy, blues music. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere had a laid back attitude. In comparison to what I'm used to back in DC/VA.... this place is exactly what I thought it would be. Locals enjoying a beautiful sunny afternoon with a beer and some good music. It appeared everyone was having a good time and I got this sense of "community" where everyone knew each other and if you didn't, well hey, who cares --- go say hi to the table next to ya. On to the food -- the oysters were yummy and fresh. I got the fried catfish and it was good. It wasn't as crisp as I wanted it to be, though. It was slightly mushy actually, but still tasty. By the way, they give you a TON of food! I mean, half my plate was full of fish, so you get your bang for your buck for sure! Anyways, it's a great place to experience the laid back, Southern atmosphere. Try them out!

Yikes. What a disaster of an experience. I am in town on business & wasn't sure where to get a good bite to eat so I consulted Yelp, leading me to Capitol Oyster Bar. I was looking forward to this place based on all of the favorable reviews. For it being a Saturday night, the place was dead. I should have taken that as a sign. Almost immediately after seating myself, a rather grumpy waitress asked me if I knew what I wanted. I politely asked her for a few more minutes as I had never been there before. Twenty minutes later she came back, whipped out her note pad & stood there. I took this as the sign she wanted me to order since she didn't say anything. I ordered a beer, 1/2 dozen oysters & a shrimp po-boy. Instead of fries, I asked if it would be an issue getting some hush puppies. She replied something to the effect of "It's whatever you want. You get two sides." So I thanked her and asked for the hush puppies. After a 45 minute wait, I was presented with a sad looking plate. The sandwich appeared to be made using a left-over fast food chicken sandwich bun. It also didn't have the typical sauce you'd find on a po-boy. It was simply tartar sauce. The hush puppies were underwhelming as well. I was given two. That's it. Just two, about the size of a nickel. I consulted the menu to see if they were more expensive than fries as a potential explanation for receiving so few. As it turns out, a basket of fries and an order of 20 hush puppies are the same price on the appetizer menu. Using a bit of common sense & mental math, I could see it being reason to give fewer hush puppies than an average serving of fries but not as drastic as cutting it down to only two. I did not finish my meal although it would have been easy given the child-size portions I was given. The food was salty, did not taste fresh, and wasn't even hot. Needless to say, I had a very disappointing experience & am glad that I'm only here visiting. I would hate to live in an area that offers up this caliber of restaurant as an option.

Portions are not very large but the quality of the seafood is good which makes up for some of that. Prices are a little high for what you get on some items such as fish and chips. Still, I would probably go there fairly often if I lived close by.

Went to Capitol Grill on a Friday night for the first time. It had a neat location, but that was about the only thing we were impressed by. The food was subpar, although the Oyster Rockefeller was pretty good. The service was horrible. We had a party of 4. They brought out 2 of our meals then took about 15-20 minutes to bring out the other 2. Also, drink your drinks slowly because good luck getting a refill. Oh, and to top it off, we had been looking forward to trying the banana pudding. It didn't even look close to banana pudding. We took one bite and couldn't stand to try any more. The waitress even noticed how awful it looked and offered to take it off the bill. I hope this place gets its act together because it really is in an awesome location.

Great food but pricey. None of the steamed meats come with any sides. Expect to pay about $45 for two people. Excellent atmosphere and if the weather allows, definitely sit on the patio overlooking the river.

Definite hole in the wall type of place; great location on the river but can be a little hard to find. Plenty of beer choices and full menu but I would stick with the appetizers or at least stay away from the Po-boys as you will be sorely disappointed in them if you've ever had one in New Orleans. Oysters, shrimp and mudbugs were good but kinda hard to screw those up.

Our gang of 3 in for lunch today and had very good selections of frog legs, gator tail apps. Gator tails were best we have had. Main dishes were oyster, shrimp and scallops variations. All real good. Good fries and hushpuppies. Perfect service. Very cool setting here overall and a great find.

Service was good. Food taste and quality was good. We had 7 in our group and we were sat pretty quick. But we all left hungry. I got the fried shrimp PLATTER and had 6 medium size shrimp in my plate. 2 other guys ordered the steamed shrimp both got 1lb. Plate and were served less than 15 prices per plate. Will not return. Sorry.

This is my favorite seafood restaurant in central Alabama. It has the best combination of fried seafood and raw oysters of any place I've tried. The atmosphere is fantastic and the food is even better. A win-win on all counts. I'll plan to bring my family here the next time they come to visit from the Carolinas.

Not a bad place. Go before it gets dark because you may not know where you are going or just go where you see all the cars and music. Circled the lot twice before deciding to go in. Food was ok-good. Did not see drink menu until end of meal. Looks like have great variety of music. People were friendly.

All around good food here. We tried the shrimp jammers (jalepeno cheese stuffed fried shrimp) and they were yummy. I also had some oysters on the half shell and they were fresh. For the main course I ordered fried frog legs. I ain't had frog legs in a coon's age, maybe even a possum's age. They were cooked perfectly, but the batter came off a little too easily. No worries, though. I'll definitely be back!

We were passing through Montgomery and decide to check this place out. We were not disappointed. My husband had the oysters and they were very fresh. I had the shrimp jammers , so good and spicy! And the shrimp po boy was really tasty too. We would definitely go back.

Overpriced bland food. The two small pieces of catfish had no seasoning in the batter. It tasted like it might have had a pinch of salt somewhere. No pepper, no garlic, no paprika, no seasoning. Could have just used Old Bay and called it a house secret. Raw oysters were good, but cost $17 a dozen.

Esther J. L.
The quality seems to disintegrate every time I go here. It's a hole in wall oyster joint, fresh oysters, EXCELLENT shrimp po-boys but the service has been slower and slower. Oysters on the weekends can range ~$14.95... I personally think it's a bit over-priced.

Capitol Oyster Bar is a longtime Montgomery staple. Their current location on the river is perfect. The service is very friendly and efficient. The food is outstanding whether you get the fried shrimp or a swordfish poboy.

Steamer was down so food was good but not great. Assuming the food would have been better with the steamer on, I am giving it a four because the service was exceptional. The locale is also the best you will find out of downtown Montgomery. The owner actually served us and made it feel even more authentic.

Aside from one night on Bourbon Street, I've not spent a lot of time in NOLA. I've watched HBO's Treme, however, so maybe that gives me a leg upon which to stand? Either way, Capitol Oyster Bar is the type of place I imagine to be all over New Orleans - a laid-back live music venue that's capable of putting out some decent quick service food. Located a bit north on I-65, definitely out of the way of the greater Montgomery area, and not inappropriately located on Shady Street, COB is a destination for anybody looking for a good meal, live music, or a pretty great view of the downtown area from the edge of the Alabama River. The food is mostly fish po'boys and of course the fresh oysters getting shucked by the entrance. I had some oysters Rockefeller, a very competent gumbo, and a skipjack po'boy that treated the fish well. It's not going to get more complicated than that, and in this place, with all these people, why should it?
(4)
Adam B.
If you're looking for only oysters this is the place. Most everything else is basic fried seafood and extremely overpriced. While we were there their steamer broke and after waiting over 45 minutes for steamed crab legs they informed us and we had to wait another 15-20 for another selection. The cole slaw was visibly going bad and my food came out cold.

You just can't go wrong here! Owner is always there & delightful! They regularly have bands with a jazzy feel! This place is laid back and just short of a dive bar. There is outside seating available overlooking the water. The food is yummy! You have to try the shrimp jammers: ooey gooey white cheese with shrimp and jalapeno deep fried to perfection! I had the raw oysters which were huge & fresh! My hubby had the grilled red snapper that he said was comparable to places in St. Pete, Fl where he is from. The bottled beer is priced cheaper than other places. The liquor drinks were a little pricier when I asked for one step above house vodka...it was $7 for a vodka (Absolute) and cranberry. That is a NO NO Price in my book! Overall wonderful experience. The drive in is a bit creepy, but keep going!

Great atmosphere. Right on the Alabama River, blues playing, fresh oysters, cold draft beer, and southern hospitality. The Amberjack Poboy was and seasoned shrimp was excellent. Only issue we had was the price of the oysters, $14.95/dz is a bit much. But overall, we really enjoyed this out of the way restaurant while visiting Montgomery.

WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED IN MY LIFE!!!! Bartender named Lacey was the rudest person I've ever met. She tried to have her boyfriend fight us because we asked to have the TV changed to basketball over a softball game she was watching. We went to dinner for my uncles birthday and our table got split up and half our party left because they waited 30 minutes for someone to take there order. Overall the place is run by idiots. There is no order or management and I will never go back again.

Loved it!! Great food, great atmosphere (it's a very casual restaurant). I've been back 3 times this week. (On a quick two-week trip to Montgomery) Love the raw oysters, gumbo, steamed shrimp & grouper. Haven't tried anything else yet. The restaurant itself is lost back in a run down neighborhood by the river - so don't think you're going to the wrong place. It's very slow but very polite in it's service - just don't be in a rush.

was in Montgomery for the Zoo. my friend wanted crab legs. did a quick search and came here. the food was great and reasonably priced. there was a $10 cover charge due to a band inside but we wanted to sit on the deck anyway and there was no cover charge outside. great atmosphere and crab legs!

Greeted at the door immediately. Friendly, busy atmosphere. Not sure about the extra $10 charge for sitting on the patio? Our waitress was really nice. Although she forgot the salad, which was no big deal, everything else was great. She was apologetic for the slow kitchen, but we didn't mind. Oysters are delicious and really fresh considering they come out on a cafeteria tray with no ice! I would definitely order them again. Shrimp poboy was good. Fries: good. Gumbo: great. I would not not come here and order the special again: grilled tuna was overpriced and served cold! This is a great place for beer, appetizers or a sandwich, and live local music on the patio when the weather is nice.

First of all, I will give them another chance because the actual seafood we did get (and cole slaw) was very tasty. And several things went wrong, but everyone was so darn nice I could not be upset! Saturday night was somewhat busy, and getting our name on the list/getting checked off the list was apparently more than the (extremely nice) hostess could handle. Good thing I had a snack before I came. However, the bartender did not charge me for a club soda which is unusual. And she was very nice just like the hostess. Our server was also extremely friendly even though she was really busy. She didn't tell us that they were out of baked potatoes, we had to find out from the poor kitchen guy who dropped my food after 35 minutes of waiting (but again, even though I wanted to cry from hunger he was so darn nice I could not be mad when he came to personally apologize and bring another plate 5 minutes later). The snapper and amberjack platters were nicely done, and the coleslaw was not with mayo (it was w a bit of vinegar) which I appreciated. Hush puppies were good, but we only got two tiny ones each. Gumbo was really amazing. The whole atmosphere was right out of Sweet Home Alabama, and there was a guy shucking oysters right at the counter, which was neat. The outside porch was cool, but I could not wait any longer to sit out there so we sat indoors. And after all that, there was an extra item on our bill that we did not order, but she removed it. SO.....I will try this place again because of the really cool atmosphere and yummy fish, but I'll go on a Tuesday lunch date! Give it a try, but don't go really hungry on a Saturday night!

If you're looking for only oysters this is the place. Most everything else is basic fried seafood and extremely overpriced. While we were there their steamer broke and after waiting over 45 minutes for steamed crab legs they informed us and we had to wait another 15-20 for another selection. The cole slaw was visibly going bad and my food came out cold.

Besides being a little hard to find this place was amazing. Great homemade food. Had steamed spiced shrimp and crawfish Mac and cheese. Very fresh! Great service. Sat at the bar.

If you like seafood this is the place for you. They don't do a lot besides seafood but what they do, is done right. Classic seafood shack in the South.
