Best barbeque ever. Nicest employees ever. Wish I could go back every day...

We are so glad we stopped at this place on our road trip! Yelp you did us right with all these great reviews! We ordered the pork sandwich and it was the best pulled pork we have had, it was large smoky chunks of pork smothered in a delicious BBQ sauce. Probably our favorite BBQ sauce we have had in a long time. We also had the ribs. They didn't fall off the bone but they weren't dry at all. Moist and a great smoky flavor. Also had the baked beans and potato salad- both were delicious. We ended it with the banana pudding I read great reviews on but we didn't love it. Just tasted like banana pudding to me. But that doesn't leased my rating because we aren't big pudding fans to start with. Cool place, great service, definitely worth the stop!

Interesting place. If you take away the setting, the food is GREAT! This spot serves what's considered the best BBQ IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF ALABAMA! However, don't expect a 4 star dining experience. It's definitely, distinctly, dive-y. The building structure is a converted 50+ year old single family home. There is writing on every square inch of the place, except the floors. Because of this, the bathrooms, at first glance, appear to be disgustingly filthy... However, they are clean. You're expected to order at a counter, before you find your own table. At the counter, there are numerous award certificates and a description of how the meat was prepared. The pork is slow smoked over some obscenely long length of time (more than half of a day, can't remember exactly). The food quality is excellent. The pork was extremely tasty and moist. The sauce was perfect, and the hush puppies were awesome. 4.5 stars for food and subtract a half star for (lack of) ambience.

We were looking for some good local BBQ and really enjoyed our lunch here. It's a little place along Old Shell Road on the west side of Mobile with a gravel parking lot in the back. The smell from the smokers hits you as soon as you get out of the car....I love that smell!!! Inside is super casual with graffiti on the walls, ceiling...pretty much everywhere...obviously a well-loved spot for locals and visitors from all over. There were three of us and between the group we ordered the lunch portions of pulled pork and ribs plus sides of coleslaw, potato salad, and BBQ beans. The potato salad isn't homemade but the coleslaw and BBQ beans were and I really enjoyed both of those quite a bit! The ribs were tender and juicy with the perfect amount of sauce. We finished with their homemade banana pudding and it was worth the extra calories! Very glad we stopped in here today!

Ate here for lunch. It's flavor is good but not falling off the bone. Potato salad sucks! Texas toast is not toasted. Cole slaw not is bad. Banana pudding is old school yummy!! Wouldn't eat here again unless it's free.
(1)Kenny C.
On a road trip to Nola so we had to make a BBQ stop and this was the winner. We did a combo ribs/chicken plate with baked beans and potato salad. Amazing all around. The beans were awesome, actually it changed my whole perspective on baked beans. I typically avoid them, but I this time I couldn't get enough! Loved everything. Keep up the good BBQ work!
(5)Carminita W.
I'm always looking for great bbq and this place did not disappoint me. The ribs were very tender and the pulled pork sandwich was piled high with a great tasting BBQ sauce. It is definitely a place to go if you are a visitor to mobile and want to experience good southern bbq

I enjoy finding places to eat and enjoy a meal, with that being said I enjoyed the food this evening but the device was very lacking. I might have had a higher expectation for the servicing of a done in guest because of the price of the meal, but I was only approached by a waitress once during the meal. Check the menu twice when you order there is a lunch meal and a dinner meal there is a $5 difference in the price. Overall the pulled pork with the spicy BBQ sauce was really good. Makes sense that they were featured on a tv show and have won awards. Just don't expect much in the way of service.

I am not going to pretend that I am a barbecue expert, but I am an expert of my taste buds and this is as good as it gets for me! The servings were generous, the food was succulent, the staff were friendly. Really, I see nothing to complain about and plenty to go gaga for. The pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone, while the pulled pork was melt-in-your-mouth -- both were heaven on earth. The chicken was probably my least favorite (but still one of the best BBQ chicken I have ever had), but the daughter would have nothing other than chicken. It is truly a shame that I live 2,000+ miles away from The Brick Pit, as I am currently drooling writing this review. I hope to go back next time I am down South.
(5)Dave O.
Who doesn't love Bar-B-Que done right, in all my travels I've found the south has more options when it's comes to great BBQ than any other part of the country. There are lots of reasons for this but I won't go into a history lesson, this review is all about Bill Armbrecnt's Brick Pit BBQ, most great BBQ places start with an owner who's passionate about BBQ and not so concerned about the eating establishment itself. I for one like the simple restaurant ideology as long as they are clean and there's an open table to enjoy the main attraction. Well the Brick Pit is just an old house turned restaurant with a giant smoker on the back screened-in porch there's a few parking spots out front and lots more parking out back. The chow line started at the front entrance continued down the hall past the restrooms and finally at the counter where you'll most likely find Bill taking the orders he's not only the pit master and owner he works hard to ensure everything flows smoothly and that the customers are happy if you're eating it here no doubt you will speak to Bill as he makes his rounds showing his appreciation. So how does one cook pork for 30 hours without drying it out I don't think you'll ever get the step by step instructions from Bill but he has eluded some of those secrets to Adam Richman, the man who makes a living eating incredibly large amounts of food, on the television series "Man Vs. Food Nation". (Check it out on YouTube) This Southern Style BBQ is full of smoke, it's moist and tender, that's true of the ribs the pulled pork or the smoked chicken so if a fully smoked piece of meat is not your thing you may not be impressed, but for most of us that truly enjoy southern BBQ this is a requirement. I also recommend getting the sauce on the side this will allow you to enjoy the flavors of the meats and also allows you add as much as you like, the sauce is great but no matter how good any sauce is I want to add it myself. You definitely need to stop here it's a bucket list type place.

There's so many BBQ restaurants in the South, it's tough to distinguish those which stand out. Meanwhile, no one will dispute The Brick Pit is better than average. What struck us most about this place was it's culture. Upon arrival, it's obvious this isn't part of a chain. You grasp a backwoods BBQ feel and a laid back local spin. Does the Brick Pit dish out the best BBQ we've ever had? No. It's is damn good, yes. And, when in Mobile, you'll be challenged to find better, unless you go to Dreamland. Brick Pit an Dreamland are similar in a way. Unlike places like Jim N Nick's, these two have smaller menus and attempt to focus on a few items they do well. At the Pit that's pulled pork, smoked chicken and ribs, along with a few sides and one dessert item. Meanwhile, if rolling through Mobile, it's defintely worth a visit. You'll normally find cute girls from USA working, awesome sweet tea and BBQ that's worth the price tag.
(4)Dana B.
Prices were decent, nice size portion, but it was a little dry had no seasoning. A big disappointment.
(2)Summer P.
Good ribs. Decent pulled pork. Excellent BBQ sauce. No beef at all. This Texan needs her brisket! Not nearly as dirty or gross looking inside as people have described.
(3)Andy D.
Wow! Not good, it's great!!!! I think I just ate the best BBQ I have ever had. I am not a connoisseur of BBQ, even though I've been eating it since I remember. I find that BBQ is very individualized, so unlike some who criticize over the the smallest blemish, I won't do that today. However, I know this from eating at the many BBQ joints, dives, restaurants, pubs and food trucks, this was an epiphany moment in sticking cooked meat in my mouth. firstly I like the atmosphere its warm and inviting, and they'er proud of their product. They tell you the hours it takes to smoke the protein. And, in my pork butt's case, it's butt sat in the smoker for some 30 hrs. That's right, 30 hrs, I wonder if I would taste so good after 30 hrs in a smoker. Typically I am not a fan of pulled pork, I find some rip it apart to small shreds and it loses it's texture. This was the best pulled pork I have EVER had. it was not sauce, sauce was on the side. It was pulled, but in hunks, and it had bark on it. Also, it was so flavorful. My baked bean side was just great too, not heavily smoked and not overly sugary. The staff, once again, there is something about servers who enjoy their job, polite, caring and informative. I'm sure the owner would be happy, but, I'm happier about getting assistance by someone who is competent and pleasant. This is a come back again place. I was a first time customer, but, I'll be back!
(5)Ryan J.
As a proud Texan and a bbq resturant manager, I was a little sad not to see some good ole brisket on the menu. .. but I know that is a texas thing so I didn't hold that against them. The standouts were the pulled pork and the banana pudding! Both were good but the pudding stole the show. Loved the place itself and enjoyed talking to the owner. Overall I'm glad we came.
(5)Suzanne C.
Oh my stars! After reading reviews on Yelp we decide to give this place a try while we stayed in Mobile for one night. I am so glad that we did. This has got to be some of the best BB Q we have ever had!! We all tried the pulled pork and ribs . The ribs fell off of the bone and are out of this world!!! The baked beans with Regular spicy sauce is equally as good. The patato salad is also excellent. If you love bbq this is a must try place. Be careful when looking for it cuz its just a house on the side of the road you might miss it. The staff is awesome and friendly. The owner even came and chatted with us for a bit.
(5)Jon M.
Had the pork bbq sandwich, which was pretty decent. However the prices are way off. This would be a regular place I would frequent if their prices were lower. I like the atmosphere of the place. It is pretty grungy in a old south kind of way.
(3)Orlando L.
this was my first visit! I first noticed that there was not ample parking for my truck to park, so I parked down the street and walked. Upon walking in, I was greeted quickly by the staff. I ordered at the "order" window. Before I sat down the food was on my table. So the service was very prompt. A full roll of paper towels was given to me, which I used about 5 sheets. I am a sloppy eater, lol. I ordered the rib plate with regular BBQ sauce with sides of potato salad, baked beans, and a slice of bread. I got 3 ribs with BBQ drizzled all over them, so I was glad I had a full roll of paper towels. The flavor was okay! Not stellar. I would give it 3.5 stars. But I gave them 4 stars due to how helpful and courteous the staff was. I would revisit again.

This is the stuff dreams are made of. I moved from Mobile 6 years ago or so an as much as I love visiting my family, I think I have a secret agenda because getting ribs from the Brick Pit is all I can think about. I spent a few years in Milwaukee and I found the cheese to be delightful, the Reubens sublime and the barbecue....*sigh* I've since moved to Seattle and the salmon is succulent, the variety of cuisine staggering and the barbecue....*siiiiiigh* I'm not saying the barbecue in either of those places is bad, it's just that after you've eaten at the Brick Pit, you will not be satisfied with anything else ever again. Better barbecue, especially the gigantic ribs, does not exist. Dear Brick Pit, You broke me. I cannot truly enjoy barbecue anymore unless I am back in Sweet Home Mobile, picking up a to go order or sitting at the table with Trogdor. I hate you. I love you. Don't ever change. Everyday is another day in the journey back to you. Keep the smoker going, I'm always on the way. Love, Lisa cons: closed on Sunday and Monday.
(5)Collin H.
Easily top 3 Best BBQ I've ever had. Ribs were fall off the bone good, pork has great smokey flavor without overwhelming you with burnt taste. You HAVE to get the banana pudding. Park in the back and walk around to the front, everything is cheap and the portions are large.
(5)Louise M.
We had the rib plate and the chicken and shared. The meat falls off the bone. Chicken is super juicy love the sauce too.
(4)Karl S.
We drove into Mobile and had to try this place based on our friends need for BBQ. The minute we saw it, we knew we were in for a treat, it's perfect. The inside is just as fun. The BBQ you ask? It's as good as it gets. We tried the Ribs, the Chicken and the Pulled Pork, it was all worth the visit. The Potato Salad alone is worthy.
(5)mark h.
Good 'CUE! Nice smokey flavor and that's mainly what you want! Sides are nuttin' special but OK. Haven't ben to Dreamland yet but this is the best I've had in Mobile so far! I'll be back.
(4)Jessica R.
Took a trip to orange beach to get out of New Orleans for a few days. Found this place on the way back and I'm so glad we did! By far the best food we had the entire trip! It's just a hole in the wall place with some of the best bbq I've had in a long time! The lunch portions are huge and are only about $10. Wish I could bring them back to Nola with us.
(5)Gary B.
Ordered take out on Saturday night (1/31/15) because we enjoyed our previous sit down meal there. A pound and a half of ribs plus pulled pork, cole slaw, beans and banana pudding. Of the ribs, well over half of them were overcooked and dried out to the point of being inedible. The pulled pork was ok but for the price the ribs were not worth it. This was our first time trying the ribs and based on this, probably my last. Shame too, as the reviews were raving about the ribs.
(3)Tim S.
Stopped here for lunch on my way from Alabama to New Orleans. Next to Paynes BBQ, this was the best BBQ I had all trip AND it was some of the best BBQ I have ever had...... ANYWHERE! I pulled up and parked in the back. Walked in and didn't know the routine so I almost sat down. The guy at the counter replied with "You have never been here before, right?" He could tell a rookie when he saw one lol. He explained to me that you order at the window and then they bring it out. He recommended the ribs right off the bat and also the pulled pork (they also serve chicken....3 meats total). I had my mind set on a pulled pork sandwich before I arrived but he changed my mind after his recommendation. He let me know about the combo plate that included ribs AND pulled pork. I was sold. I ordered that combo with spicy sauce. I ordered double beans as my side and they also throw in a piece of Texas toast. Ordered a Pepsi to drink and took my seat. Soon thereafter, the bbq plate from heaven arrived. Here is how it tasted. BBQ Ribs- They use a spare rib and they smoke the shit out of it. I think they smoke them for 8-12 hours or something. They coat them with a delicious bbq sauce and they were the most tender and best tasting ribs I have had since LCS BBQ in KC back in the day. You know on a spare rib, the tip of it where the cartilage is? Even that part was tender and with a few chews you could have eaten it. I of course did not eat it but I'm just saying you could have. These ribs were great Pulled Pork- Once again....they smoke it so long that its tender and flavorful as can be. They give you about 8 ounces and top it with their spicy sauce. I was alternating between rib and pork, pork and rib. It was so damn good I cleaned my plate and sopped up the sauce with the piece of Texas toast they provided. Baked Beans- I had a double helping of these and they were absolutely delicious too! They had pieces of meat in them and the sauce was a darker, thicker, rich sauce. I gobbled those up pretty quick. Service was spot on! Friendly and fast. Total for everything came out to just under $20 with tip and it was well worth it. I purposely did not use paper towels for about half my meal because these ribs and pork and sauce were finger licking good. The Brick Pit sure does know how to put out some great BBQ. I wish I could go back. It was absolutely phenomenal!
(5)CasaDelGato S.
One of the best around and they have been around for a long time. Great smoky barbecue and healthy portions make this one of my office's "go to" restaurants for lunch.
(5)F G.
Seriously amazing food! That's it. That's all. Ribs are just the best effing ribs I've ever ever ever ever had.
(5)Rockwell L.
Had a ribs/pork dinner plate with cole slaw and baked beans. Ribs: 1000%, phenomenal, best I've had. Pork: A distant second, and a little dry, but still 4*. Sides: Definitely lagging behind the barbeque. Sweet cole slaw was a little off putting and the beans were average. The place itself had an awesome vibe, with the smokehouse hanging off the back of the restaurant and messages from customers covering the walls. Was one of the culinary highlights of the trip.
(4)LIVIA H.
Live in Pearl Ms and thought a local deli had the best BBQ I ever had until my recent visit to The Brick Pit! Pulled pork and sides were great, should have tried the banana pudding! Good portions.....
(5)Robert G.
Just had the big pull pork sandwich. It came out fast and the spicy sauce was good. Not the best but good for the money. Place needs a deep cleaning.
(3)Christopher M.
This place is top notch. As we made our way inside we could smell smoked meats cooking, turned out to be a good sign. A trailer-like setting is all that is needed when barbeque is done this good. As soon as you walk in this place you can tell it is loved by Mobile. Signatures flood every inch of the walls and tons of photos fill the spaces in between. The older gentleman at the front desk was really nice and explained their meat smoking process. The food was undoubtedly tasty. I ordered 3 ribs and pulled pork. Both of them were smoked to perfection and had a nice tenderness to them. My baked beans were really good and the sauces were the best ive had around here. Will be going back when I want ribs done right
(5)Reinaldo C.
I'm from Hawaii and we know good food, and this is one of the best foods I've ever had. It's that good. The cook/owner talks to the patrons and even takes pictures with them. I recommend you try everything on the menu by sharing plates with your party. The ribs, pulled pork, and chicken were all awesome. I'll be coming back here for more.
(5)Gilbert A.
Only reason for no fifth star is due to no AC on a hot day. Besides that this place is great! Passing through from Ft. Lauderdale, FL and we had to try it. Yelp was right again!
(4)Alexa L.
Stopped through town on the way to Florida and I'm so glad we did - the food was really really delicious along with a great host and quaint small town feel. I recommend getting a combo dinner plate so you can try a little bit of everything along with the homemade banana pudding for dessert. I wish they bottled the sauces so I could take a little Brick Pit home! Well worth the detour.
(5)Natalie B.
Chose this place due to a yelp reviews! It was amazing. Note: I ordered the BBQ chicken plate thinking I would get pulled chicken but it actually half of a whole chicken! Flavor was amazing (especially the spicy sauce). Potato salad and baked beans were pretty good!
(5)Stacie B.
The Brick Pit is a great stop if you are a BBQ lover! I attended the University of South Alabama just down the road, and the Brick Pit was always my family's favorite stop on visits. With a great, casual BBQ atmosphere, you can't help but love the place. The food is outstanding--always fresh with generous portions that come out fast and leave you full. Overall, the experience at the Brick Pit is a fantastic one that shouldn't be missed!
(4)Ryan M.
In town for the Senior Bowl and read about how this place was voted the best ribs in the country by Maxim. I haven't had meat from all over the country, but I have a feeling they're right. I got the combo platter of ribs and pulled pork because that's what everybody was raving about on here. Both were amazeballs. Wish I had gone all ribs though. They were incredibly meaty and a good combination of succulent and a bit chewy around the edges. Two sides and all that mean and it was just $13. Incredible. This is a hole in the wall place that I'll be coming back to every time I'm in Mobile.
(5)mei y.
One of the Best ribs ever tasted. Smoked just right and sauce just right ; tender and juicy just right! you are in happy land when you eat these ribs. The beans are very good also. I can't say I like their pulled pork. It was a bit dry for me. The coleslaw was just a bit too creamy/mayoie for me. Definitely worth the trip for their ribs!
(4)Issac M.
Had the pulled pork. It was okay. Kind of disappointed. I thought the durty south was known for it's BBQ. I've eaten at better joints in CA. And what is with the high prices and small portion sizes at BBQ places? I'll never get that.
(2)J.E. B.
The ribs and pulled pork were really good. The potato salad was good, but the baked beans tasted like they came out of a can. The banana pudding is served in a Styrofoam bowl with a plastic lid, not freshly scooped from a larger container, and was fairly disgusting. Overall, it was a good meal and worth the price. I dinged them a star because the bathrooms were ratchet and the place looks dirty. With that said, our table and silverware was clean. Maybe I'm shallow, but a filthy building leads me to assume the kitchen is also filthy. I'll probably get an order to go the next time.
(4)Tom M.
Ate here about 3 weeks ago. It's legendary so I wanted to go as I was driving through the area and wanted something memorable. Have to be honest - my chicken looked and tasted dry. Beans, potato salad and banana pudding were average. I didn't complain about the chicken because it's probably all dry since it's all smoked together. I would try eating here again but would not order chicken.
(2)Bjorn B.
The ribs were pretty good. I liked the spicier sauce better. If they had a better rub on the ribs, I might have given it another star. The texture was pretty good too.
(3)Sobo W.
We were visiting some friends in Mobile and they decided we would go pick up some BBQ here. We got a slab of ribs, 2 chickens and a tray of pulled pork along with some potato salad. I tried some of each and wow!! All so tender! I wished we had ordered more because it all tasted so good. The regular BBQ sauce was my fav..the guys liked the spicy sauce too. And the potato salad? YUM!! to this place!! Go get your barbecue on my friends!!
(5)Rachelle L.
My friend and I were road trippin' it from California to Florida and decided to stop here. She got the pulled pork and I got the ribs. They were both delicious, and we were definitely full. Also, the cute boys working here were the definition of southern charm. Love this place and will be coming back when we road trip it back.
(4)Sara D.
Best potato salad I've ever had! And we got our food right when we sat down! Definitely recommend The Brick Pit!
(5)Alexander B.
Eh had the chicken, and don't know whether that can be a real gauge of a bbq joint, but it was ok but not great. Dinner plate consists of a half of chicken, sauce was decent, and two sides (not so much). With so many place in Mobile that I know of, it's worth a stop but not calling it the best out there.
(3)Chris N Michelle M.
Delicious, delicious, delicious!! Found this place off of The Food Network and made our way there on the way home from FL. The ribs, pulled pork and the chicken were too good and the staff was very friendly. We were going to go to Dreamland again but are glad we didn't - sorry folks. Don't forget to try the banana pudding!!!
(5)Roll T.
As a whole, the State of Alabama is absurdly underrated for its incredible BBQ. Whether you are in the Northern part of the state enjoying BBQ slathered in white sauce (I'd suggest Saw's BBQ in Birmingham but there are other great places even further north in the State), in Tuscaloosa at the original Dreamland's (the only one worth visiting) enjoying what many people consider the best BBQ sauce in the nation, or in Southern Alabama eating at the Alabama outpost of Mississippi's pride and joy, the Shed, you are sitting down to some serious BBQ. The Brick Pit, a restaurant whose regional acclaim is spreading into a national reputation, only furthers the point that people need to pay attention to this state when talking seriously about BBQ. The Brick Pit is best known for their pulled pork BBQ which is smoked over wood in-house for a period of 30 hours. The ribs, which exhibit slight pull from the bone, are placed in that cooking tower for approximately 12 hours. The basic gist is if you have any interest in slow cooked meat over a wood fire, you need to get to know the Brick Pit. I'll agree with some reviews that the sauce itself isn't the greatest, but I think the ribs themselves are some of the best I have had nationally. The ribs are thick yet tender and are actually well complimented (and not overpowered) by Brick Pit's sauce. Some people might find the smokiness a bit too strong, but I actually consider it a strength of the ribs. Outside of the ribs, the pulled pork sandwich is generously stacked with meat cooked for 30 hours and comes with BBQ sauce on the side. Make it as messy as you want. If you don't order the banana pudding, you need to sit in the corner and wear the dunce cap for eternity. While it might not look outstanding, the taste cannot be disputed. There is a nearly perfect balance of sugar and crust and the consistency is velvety smooth without feeling like baby food. I'd definitely place it among the top desserts I have ever eaten with BBQ (the blackberry cobbler at the original Salt Lick still is the best dessert, and it's not really close). Overall, the Brick Pit is a solid BBQ restaurant with notes of spectacular cuisine. It's certainly worth a visit if you happen to be within 45 minutes driving distance or if you happen to be a BBQ aficionado.
(4)Jeremy E.
Great lunch stop after going to the museum & gardens. Full portions & good bbq & chicken.
(4)Robert W.
About the worst restaurant I've ever eaten in outside of a 3rd world country. Place was hot and dirty. Flies were everywhere. Health Inspection certificate was nowhere in sight. Found it on county website where restaurant was rated an 85 iin 2012. First time that my family has tried this place and the last... Portions were skimpy and my pulled pork dinner came drowned in BBQ sauce. So much so that I couldn't tell how the pork had been cooked. Place reminded me of a college dive which wasn't bad considering it is right up the road from the university. I've definitely had better BBQ at chain restaurants that what was served here.
(1)Lynne L.
Best BBQ in town: tender and very smoky. It's so good, it doesn't need sauce at all! I only gave it 4 stars, because they don't serve beer on site, but my group was ok to walk across the street to buy a 6-pack. Cheaper, anyways. I usually get take-out, because the atmosphere isn't my taste. It's clean, but very basic furniture with customer writing all over the walls. This time I had a group of co-workers with me visiting from FL, and they wanted to enjoy the "home-grown' atmosphere. When we arrived, we were the only people seated, but later the restaurant started to fill up, and there were lots of take out orders. Pretty busy for a weeknight dinner, but we had great service from our waitress. My group noticed she was practicing a ukelele before the restaurant got busy, and she even played a few songs for us, when my group made the request. There were five of us, and we split a slab of ribs and pulled pork, with potato salad, coleslaw, and beans. It was just the right amount of food for us. Unfortunately, we were too full for the banana pudding, which I have tasted in the past, and is worth saving room for.

After reading many positive reviews, as well as seeing it televised on man versus food, I had to try this place. It appears to be built out of an old house, which is fine, and it gives it sort of an interesting character. We ate there today at just after 1pm. The first issue I had is that they do not cook brisket there. Brisket to me is the great arbiter of whether you can cook barbecue or not. So not to even have a brisket on the menu is a red flag in my opinion. I ordered the two meats special with ribs and pulled pork and my son ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were sort of average to slightly below average, as they really simply didn't have any redeeming quality about them. The smoke flavor was okay but not really flavorful. The real issue was the pulled pork, what this place is supposed to be known for. It was possibly the driest pulled pork I ever had my life, and they try to disguise it by covering it up with a lot of barbecue sauce. That didn't work. The pork so dry it was virtually inedible, and simply had no flavor whatsoever. The barbecue sauce was sort of okay, but not terribly memorable. The sides of potato salad and barbecue beans were about as expected. The beans tasted like every other beans at BBQ places, but the potato salad was bad, simply bad as it had a lot of sugar in it. Putting sugar into potato salad in the quantity they did was too much. I hope that this was just a bad day for them, but I'm probably not coming back.
(2)Jessica G.
For a little shack of a restaurant it's not that bad. The worst part, other than finding a table, is knowing that if your food is dry and overcooked, it's all like that. I was not impressed with the cole slaw. The banana pudding was alright. The BBQ is amazing! When I'm there I see nothing but construction workers, and I'm the odd ball out. I can't help but feel this is the place for the average manly man working out in the heat, and it's the wife of the boss man taking care of them on lunch break, cooling off in the AC.
(3)Deb G.
It's probably a 3.5, but I'm rounding up. I didn't want to miss BBQ in Mobile, but only had a chance to realize my dream on the way to the airport. If this also happens to you, head directly for the Brick Pit. It's a little hole in the wall type place, exactly what you want for good 'cue. My party of three tried the chicken, pulled pork, and ribs, all of which were pronounced "delicious." My ribs were a little dry, but very meaty and full of flavor. And the spicy sauce! Oh, the sauce! It was SO GOOD! I could have eaten that on an old shoe and been perfectly happy. But it isn't very spicy, in case you are concerned. For the sides, the BBQ beans were great - spicy, rich, and just about perfect. Unfortunately, the potato salad wasn't. It was completely lifeless - maybe some salt would have helped. But yeah, I can agree with all the others. Go here, eat ribs, lick your fingers, be happy.

If you're in Mobile don"t miss lunch at The Brick Pit. Not a fancy place but a real dive with great food. Great local flavor and the best BBQ I've ever had!!!
(5)Pam D.
All bow down to the holy grail of BBQ - the Brick Pitt! We took a one hour detour on our road trip to try some true southern barbeque. This place is exactly what every other BBQ restaurant in the US could ever hope to be. Hole in the wall place off the side of the road, huge smoker in the back, and employees who've been working there forever. Perfect BBQ charm. After parking behind the restaurant, you walk inside and up to a small window where you order your fixings. You can choose from a menu of Pork, Ribs, or Chicken. That's it. You know a place is good when they can survive on three menu items. Once you order and pay you sit at a table and they bring you the food. I had the pork, which is served pulled (by hand). It was seriously amazing. Moist and delicious. The barbeque sauce was perfect too- not too sweet, spicy, or smoked. Just a great sauce to accompany the pork perfection. They only had 4 sides to choose from, and I got baked beans that were really good! It was also served with some bread. You MUST TRY the banana pudding. It is made fresh every day. We wolfed down two orders of the stuff in no time. Great texture and just enough sweet to finish out the meal. I want a tub of that to be sold in my local grocery store, please! I sort of loved that it was served in a styrofoam bowl. The food is incredible, but the star here is the place itself. The history of the joint is written on it's walls- literally! Thousands of patrons took the liberty of writing notes of thanks and gratitude to the establishment. The wall and ceilings are covered in a rainbow of sharpie colors- it makes for good entertainment while you wait for the food. If you're passing through - or anywhere near - Mobile and want the best BBQ you can find, this is it!!

On a trip back from Mobile We had the Chicken and the rib platter By it was great The ribs were perfect and Huge The chicken breast was perfectly done and moist The potato salad was very fresh and obviously home made Beans were good slaw was good Sauce danced with the meat and was outstanding Lookem up stop on by Really nice folks who work there too

NOT WORTH THE HYPE! We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday and everything about this place was terrible. At first, I was impressed that a rib plate was only $10. When it arrived I found out why. There were 3 charred pieces of pork, that may or may not have been ribs at some point on each plate. They were bitter (who smokes w/ pecan wood?) dry and chewy. In a word, horrible. Getting into & out of the parking lot was shear hell also. We will NEVER be back, and I have no idea how this place was ever featured on a TV show!

I was back in town for the MLK Holiday weekend and decided that I wanted to have some down-home style BBQ. I was pleasantly surprised by this off the beaten path restaurant. The staff were amazingly friendly, and the food was excellent. I had the pulled pork plate. There was a small mix-up with my order - I asked for baked beans as one of my sides - got potato salad instead - but as I like both, I ate it anyway and wasn't disappointed. I'll definitely go back the next time I'm back in Bama.
(5)Anne G.
I enjoyed the flavor of the smoked meat but the sauce was disappointing. The sides were gross . Next time, I will just get the meat with no sauce and take it home to put my own sauce on it and make by own sides. So far this is the nest for the mobile area but they do not really have competition because the other places are a joke. I think this has made them lazy, they could do much better. They need to improve their sauce and make better sides or stop offering them. I agree about California having better Bar B Que which is sad since, I was expecting so much from the south as far as Bar B Que goes.

So, I'm a northerner. Born in Iowa, live in New York City. I don't promise to be the world's utmost authority on BBQ, but I do content that absence (of good BBQ) makes the heart grow fonder. And I'm awfully fond of the Brick Pit. I had a combo platter of pulled pork and ribs, and enjoyed both, though I'd get all pulled pork if I had it to do over again. Friendly service, located 15 minutes from the airport for a convenient last-decadent-Southern-meal stop. I didn't love the sides (cole slaw & potato salad), and couldn't even eat half of the portion served to me, but would absolutely return here.
(5)Juan V.
Absolutely the best BBQ I have ever had. I ordered the rib plate, the meat falls off the bone. Everything was delicious, I highly recommend this place.
(5)Vanessa M.
My husband and I just moved to the area and live a few blocks away from the Brick Pit. Everyday I drive past the Pit I can smell the wood smoke from the smokers in the back and my mouth waters! I have been begging my husband to take me here for a while, and a few weeks ago he did. I was sooooo disappointed! The ribs were dry and the bbq sauce was WAY too vinegar-y. I love me some vinegar bbq sauce, but this was too much. So bad that I didn't even want to finish eating my ribs, which are usually my favorite!! My husband's pulled pork sandwich was alright. It wasn't great, sadly. The only things that were good about this restaurant was the customer service from the staff, the prices, and the sweet tea. Unfortunately, we will not go back.
(2)Eric P.
Awesome barbecue and excellent service. It's bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Get there early for lunch though.
(5)Pazinhim B.
Some of the most memorable bbq I've had in my life! Great value for the amount of food you get, too!
(5)Danielle D.
Best BBQ ever! My husband and I tried the pulled pork and the ribs. We voted the ribs as number one! The baked beans were delicious as well! The smell of the place was AMAZING! The setting inside of the building was very unique. It really felt like we were in a families house, enjoying a great meal. FYI There is not a normal 'hostess stand" You go up to the counter and order your food.
(5)Julie L.
For me, rating a BBQ joint good or not comes down to the sides. Most good BBQ places make really good meat, but the sides tend to all taste the same. Not Brick Pit. Their potato salad and beans were so good, I'd eat them by themselves. The homestyle banana pudding didn't exactly hurt my feelings either. Service was quick, portions were generous, and you need to stop reading and go now. Just don't tell me about it because I'll be jealous.
(4)Kim L.
Well triple D told us to go by this place if we got the chance, so we drove 27 mins out of the way to go here. I must say I don't think this places BBQ taste any different than any of my other favorite BBQ. My Husband on the other hand thinks the ribs were GREAT. I guess it's a "Guy" thing! You have to walk up to the counter and put in your order, then find a table anywhere and they bring you your food. I told the guy when I was ordering that Dinners Drivins and Dives, as well as the yelpers said I should try this place so we drove out to get some of their Q. After we order a combo plate of pulled pork and ribs we sat down, two mins later the chef came up to us and asked were we the Judges? I was like what? No we aren't judges we just came because triple D said you had good Q. He shook our hands and went back to the kitchen. When the food arrived the ribs were tiny and dry, but the pork was good. The guy who took our order came by to check on us saw our ribs and was like, "Oh no those aren't good ribs, let me get you some more!" He came back within mins with a plate full of beautiful ribs. My husband just sat there nodding his head and chewing saying oh yeah, this is good! I liked them, but I liked the pulled pork more. The two sauce choices were good for my hubby, but I found them to have a spice in them, even the mild, that builds up on you and becomes too spicy for me. The potato salad was all right a little soupy, not enough potatoes in it. The beans we delicious, I used them as my sauce for the pulled pork. There was a piece of dry white toast on the plate, that I am not sure what it was for. Like I said it must be a "Guy" thing.
(3)lin h.
Either I came on a really really bad day (of which I'm pretty sure it was not) or most yelpers yelping this place have not tried much bbq. Tried both the ribs and pulled pork. Pulled pork w/ spicy bbq sauce, and ribs with regular bbq sauce. Also got the baked beans, cole slaw, and potato salad. Both bbq sauces were just average. Absolutely nothing spectacular about it. Ribs were friggin dry. Seriously, wtf. Ok, I'm assuming it was a bad day on this part. You could taste the smokiness, but other than that, I could make this at home. Pulled pork was just a bit above average. Definitely have had better. Cole slaw is not good. Not horrible, but definitely under average. Potato salad was NOT good. Again, not horrible, but i've made better at home. Baked beans was the only thing that was above average. Believe me, goto Backyard BBQ pit in Durham, NC for REAL bbq. VERY VERY disappointed with this place.
(2)J G.
Pulled pork was best I ever had. Better than my own. They served us later than normal so gave Taylor a big tip. It's a bring your own beer place which is an interesting concept. Were out of ribs but heard are great too
(5)Agatha K.
Come an gittit! talking about the pulled pork! I went thru all my napkins. and I sent my man to get more and you know what I used them all up again lol.. If that aint a good measuring stick of what a good BBQ joint is i do not know is what is. Sides are finger licking good! literally ate my dang hand off trying to get all the juices I sopped up from that plate! it was a long time ago but it was the best thing in the entire world under Almighty God. Amen. good service!
(5)Stacy C.
In Mobile for first time and was driving around trying to find a local place and stumbled across this. Got the meat combo with pulled pork & ribs w/ slaw and potato salad. I am a bit of a slaw snob and loved this one. Potato salad was really good, too. Pulled pork was tasty and ribs pull-off-bone tender. Nice sauce. May go back again before I leave town!
(4)edgard k.
Great little wooden shack in the middle of the wood! If you have a hard time deciding between the pulled pork or ribs, the ribs is definitely better for me. Really like their potato salad and coleslaw.
(4)Jessica A.
I think I died and went to Barbeque Heaven.... Again, I would never have found this place/went here, if it wasn't for Yelp. So thanks y'all! I arrived around 8:30pm, and they were just closing up. Fortunately I was a solo diner and the owner, Bill, happened to be right there. He asked if I was interested in Take-Out - - and I was, Absolutely!! I mean, I had to try this place! I took Bill's advice and took the combo platter with pulled pork and ribs, baked beans, potato salad, and bread. Yes - - a TON of food, but I wanted to at least sample it all. The pulled pork was ridiculously amazing! The beans....mmmm, seriously I think the best I've EVER had! The ribs were good too... but I was too full. Definitely try this place if you're in the area!
(5)J. R. H.
Like those famous televangelists in the Deep South, you'll need all 8 syllables of "Jee-ee-ee-ss-ssuh-uhss-ss-sah" to describe how bone-sucking good the ribs and pulled pork are served up from The Brick Pit. On par with my home island Becky's BBQ in RI dor quality and flavor. Not to be missed.
(5)Connor W.
Amazing bbq with quick service and very reasonable price. Cool old converted house and down home banana pudding for desert! Can't beat it. If u end up in Mobile for work or fun, gotta go to the brick pit!
(5)Lucy B.
I think this place may be overhyped. Be ready for a super dive-y atmosphere that verges on repulsive IMHO. Had the pulled pork sandwich, which was quite generous with meat and delicious. Meat was good and smokey. BBQ sauce was thick, sweet, and spicy. Not being much of a BBQ snob, the sides have become pretty important when ranking my barbeque restaurants.. and this place offers just the typical beans, potato salad, etc. This is a bit of a let down, especially for someone like me who doesn't enjoy mayo and therefore doesn't enjoy most cold salads. Nanner pudding was pretty good though. At the end, it just didn't wow me the way I'd expect with having so many stars, TV shows, etc. Not worth the drive out from Midtown.

After hearing great reviews from friends and reading great things on Yelp, we decided to check out Brick Pit on the way back from Orange Beach. I have some experience in what good BBQ should be and this missed the mark. We both had the pulled pork plate with potato salad and baked beans. The pork was tender and smoky but only slightly above average. That being said the BBQ sauce was nowhere on the level of what legendary BBQ should be. It tasted just run of the mill with no depth to it. The potato salad was very average with nothing to set it apart. I have had better baked beans from a can. The sauce of the beans had too much of a ketchup taste to it. Plus, to top it off the bread that came with our plates had the taste of being on the edge of being too old to serve. The location was unique and a good calling card for down home BBQ but unfortunately the food was nothing worth returning for. I have read of people comparing Brick Pitt to the Shed, there is no comparison. I have not dined at the new Shed down the street from Brick Pitt but I know the original in Mississippi knocks Brick Pitt out of the park! The Shed is still by far the king of BBQ in the area!!
(2)Jennifer P.
If you are like me an believe the little mom and pop not so attractive places have the best food, you won't be disappointed. You can smell the smoke walking in. The service was quick. I loved the pulled pork.
(4)annesha a.
I have only given this place one star because I was not allowed to pick zero.... I have eaten BBQ all over the country, as I have traveled to 31 out of the 50 states, and this tops the chart for over hyped food. I don't think that people in Alabama know great food. I never leave reviews but thought that I would have to on this place... The sides are NASTY.... horrible..... gross even. The potato salad tastes like potatos and mayo... that is it.. the slaw is right out of a deli and the beans... well they were straight out of a can. You pull up into this smoke shack that looks like an old dump, there is no where to park... and then you pay all of this money for ribs that have no salt or season... just smoke. Yes they would be great , if you are seasoning greens or beans.... because they taste like ham hocks...period. Every time we pass this place my whole family cringes at the ham hock BBQ joint. Yuck
(1)Duane P.
This place is about smoke and they want you to know it. They had a small pit billowing on the roadside by their sign. Took a detour off I-10 passing through Mobile on return from a vacation. The menu is short and sweet and the folks are friendly. I had a rib plate, which came with three large ribs, potato salad, baked beans & a slice of white bread. My wife got pulled pork with coleslaw. They got sides mixed on our plates. The ribs were smoky and pink, moist and tender. The tomato-based sauce covered the ribs and pooled on the plate. It was spicy and not particularly sweet. Very good ribs. The pulled pork was good, but drowning in spicy sauce. The beans were likely straight out of a can. The potato salad was good: it had a creamy sauce with minced herb of some kind (looked like fennel or dill, but no hint of flavor). The cool creaminess complimented the spicy barbecue sauce. We didn't use a GPS or decent map to find this joint . If you are same and getting there off I-65, note that there is no exit onto Old Shell Road: exit onto Dauphin St or Spring Hill Ave and use service road to get to Old Shell Rd. Old Shell Road is winding, tree-shaded lane with nice, older homes. The restaurant is in a small, wood-framed house. Parking is wherever you can find it on the unimproved lot, mostly in rear. If convenient, we may stop by again.
(3)A. C.
Love stopping here if I'm on that side of town. Delicious. Never had a problem with service or anything.
(5)Maynard G.
Ribs were pretty good, but nowhere near as awesome as they were when I was last here two years ago. They were real smoky tasting and perfectly cooked then. Cole slaw OK, nothing special.
(3)Austin H.
Barbeque is fantastic. Not much on the side, but the pulled pork has a perfect flavor!
(4)Tiffany P.
My friend and I are travelling through Mobile and had heard of The Brick Pit on a few different food shows and lists... unfortunately we realized yesterday was the only day we'd be in town that it was open (closed Sunday and Monday) and we had less than an hour to get there! We raced out to this tiny BBQ joint hoping it was worth the rush... let me tell you this place did NOT disappoint. I got the pulled pork platter with a side of home made coleslaw and potato salad. Everything blended together perfectly. The meat was delicious and the sauce complimented it perfectly but was not overpowering. A perfect bite for me was taking a forkfull of the pork and topping it with a chunk of the potato salad. The waitress was really nice and on our way out gave us a free dessert :) If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely be going back.
(5)dan d.
After eating here, give yourself at least 3 hours before engaging in any physical activity. Trust me, I learned this one the hard way. As for the food, choose pulled pork over ribs; and potato salad over cole slaw over baked beans. Bring a marker to write on the wall. Yelp would be a lot better if they allowed the "greater than" character in reviews.
(5)Rob W.
So it's a not so great BBQ joint. Well, it's an old house turned into a restaurant. Which I'm not against, because some of the best BBQ comes from little dives like this. But, upon entering you can't help but notice all the graffiti scrawled on every free space of wall. Which is quaint until you realize that those signatures from 2004 are almost 10 years old now, which means they haven't painted (and I highly doubt cleaned) those walls since. Then you notice the well worn carpet and it also has an "icky" look to it. The food: The chicken was dry and overcooked. The ribs were mostly bone though what meat was there tasted ok. Sauces vary from place to place. I wasn't thrilled with either sauce they offer but others may like it. The "Texas Toast" was neither toasted nor buttered, though the bread was "Texas" sized. I ordered the "famous" banana pudding and waited and waited, and finally had to remind them to bring it to me. It was good. Ultimately, I will not recommend this place, nor will I return. There are better BBQ joints that at least have cleaner atmospheres, much less better food.
(1)John G.
Meh...the pulled pork didn't blow my socks off, but I might dine in sometime again in the future. My wife said the chicken was all right.
(3)Christian H.
This place looks like an old house - if that house was Grandma's house - if Grandma was a BBQ cooking God. They do not have a big selection, but they don't need it. The BBQ is great and the portions are good too. You can order the lunch portion for dinner - that's what I did, but I kind of wish I had gorged myself and gotten the full plate. At any rate - this place is delicious. Give it a try.
(5)Peter Q.
I live in Texas and was visiting family in Mobile. I saw the reviews on yelp and was surprised to see such high ratings for a small barbecue restaurant. I must say, however, the restaurant really lives up to the hype. I was with my brother and family. I had the ribs. They truly were fall-off-the-bone good. The pulled pork sandwich was also quite impressive, but not as amazing as the ribs. The only downside was the BBQ sauce, which is good, but nothing special. I had the spicy, which was tangy, but I don't think it was spicy at all. Overall, it's a great experience and easily the best barbecue I've had in Mobile.
(4)Barron W.
After reading all the great reviews I was very excited about eating here. My excitement turned to disappointment real fast. The chicken wasn't seasoned at all,the ribs were over-cooked and dry. The banana pudding was runny. Only thing good was the pulled pork. Everything else was horrible and I could have done way better on them myself. I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!
(1)Tim N.
I have not been to Mobile in 9 years but I dream about the time I spent there. Truly, the better part of my four years in Mobile were spent sitting at The Brick Pit and enjoying the best BBQ chicken and pork that I have tasted. Their sauces are fantastic and really are a gret compliment to the smokey tastes of their meats. being from the midwest I prefer my ribs to be babyback but I go straight for the pulled pok and chickenwhen I'm at The Brick Pit. Who can resist the temptation when you drive down Old Shell Road and catch a whiff of that smoke? Follow it up with some of the best Banana Pudding and your truly in BBQ heaven. I wonder if that great music shop is still next door?!
(5)Linh H.
I wasn't very impressed with Brick Pit. I've listened to all the hype and read the reviews but what really drew me in that very first time was that darn smoker in front of the sign.. wafting up all that delicious BBQ smell. This place is definitely a dive and that's what many people like about it. The pit master is nice enough and all of the meat are in it for the long haul. However, the consistency is not what I expect it to be. Some days all of the meat are really juicy, others the ribs are beyond smoke.. those suckers are burnt. The BBQ pork is pretty much a solid bet though. I wouldn't waste my money on any of the sides either. I think there are other games in town that does sweet bbq sauce better.
(2)Dru T. D.
I did not like the ribs nor the pulled pork. Both lacked the smoky seasoned flavor of really good barbecue. The sauce tastes too much like vinegar and chili powder, it has no balance or character. The beans are basic and the potato salad forgettable. I've had tastier BBQ at the Houston airport (IAH).
(1)Matt B.
The pulled pork is hickory smoked for 30 hours and it tastes like it! The slab of ribs is actually better than the individual ribs (just my opinion, i like less fatty cuts, other people request the fattiest rib). You can get the combo platter and try em both. Slaw is excellent. The banana pudding is also amazing. This might be the best BBQ place on earth.
(5)Christin C.
I had a lunch platter with half smoked pulled pork, half smoked ribs. The ribs were tender and the pulled pork had a great texture. If you are into smoked BBQ then this place will definitely satisfy. The smoke flavor really comes through in the food! The platter comes with coleslaw, which had a little to much vinegar for my taste. The baked beans that also came with the platter were good. They make a homemade banana pudding which has a great flavor and was a great ending to this BBQ lunch!
(4)Michael H.
Great juicy smoked ribs and the sauce was the perfect touch.
(4)Bruce T.
I stopped at the Brick Pit on my way to New Orleans. Best decision I've made in awhile. The BBQ ribs were outstanding!
(5)sugi o.
when we pulled up, i was soOooo excited about trying out the place! good yelp reviews + man vs food!!!! i was the fobby asian tourist putting up my peace signs for photo ops next to the signage, the door, the building. the place is definitely unique... there's writing all over the walls from past patrons and a small window you order from. pretty cool! but... thats where the excitement waned into more of a "eh". the food was okay... nothing special, nothing that made me want more. i had the pulled pork, my hubbo had the ribs, and my bestie had the chicken. and it was all just okay. and everything was drenched in just okay bbq sauce. go in with low expectations... that way you wont be disappointed!!
(3)Nilsen S.
Believe the hype! This place is unreal for ribs. They are stop you in your tracks good. The meat literally falls off the bone because it is so tender. I have been to other "great" barbeque joints but the pit tops all of them so far. My girlfriend got the pulled pork and it was also an exceptional option. The sides were pretty good, but to be honest, I was so distracted by the barbeque miracle on my plate to even think about other food. The serving sizes here are generous. If you get a plate of ribs here you will leave full and satisfied. Also, you MUST get the banana pudding. Now I am not much of a pudding eater but this stuff was off the wall good. I think a deal may have been made with the devil for the recipe to this stuff. The customer service here is also great, It has a very comfortable and laid back atmosphere. When we arrived we saw who I assume was the almighty barbeque master outside of the smoking pit. after a short conversation and hearing that we had never been there before he said "well don't let me hold you up! get on up in there" and proceeded to let us in through an employees entrance in the instead of making us walk around to the front entrance. He was a very nice guy and makes an unspeakably good set of ribs. If you are in Mobile you absolutely must visit this place. You will not regret it.
(5)Kaitlin W.
I was really looking forward to trying this place. I kept hearing how it was featured on Man VS. Food, and how their huge smoker makes delicious BBQ. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. The outside and indoor decor is very down home, which I appreciated. You walk up to a counter and order, and they bring you out your food. I ordered the combo plate of pulled pork and ribs with potato salad and baked beans, and a pop. My total came to $16.98 The ribs are so smoked it tastes like you are literally chomping into a bonfire. Plus, the sauce wasn't really much to ride home about. The pulled pork I would say is the best. The potato salad is really liquid-y. I tried their banana pudding after, and the pudding tasted sandy, like the pudding wasn't whipped until all the powder had dissolved. If you have folks coming in from out of town, that want to get the whole "Southern, down-home, country vibe" while grubbing on some BBQ, the place definitely has the charm, but this place is not the best BBQ in Mobile in my opinion.
(2)Jerry H.
Saw this place on Man v Food. Came to visit Mobile from California. Came in with roughly an hour and a half until closing time only to be told that they had run out of ribs. Instead, had to order the pulled pork which was very delicious. Food came out very promptly. I Ordered the pulled pork spicy but there was hardly any spice to it. When we were done with our meal, the guy that took my order brought me out two freshly cooked ribs with BBQ sauce. They were AWESOME! Completely made up for the lack of ribs earlier. I would have given it 5 stars, but the lack of ribs early in the night & having to order something else completely defeated the reason why I wanted to go there in the first place.
(4)Sean S.
Unbelievable pulled pork and ribs. Drove a good half hour out of my way just to try the best smoked barbeque in the great state of Alabama.
(5)Michael B.
Arguably THE BEST BBQ in AMERICA!!! You can taste the hickory and pecan wood in each bite of porky wonderfulness. I like the food so much I order an extra 2lbs and flew back across country with it so I could share it with friends. The housemade banana puddin' is a nice way to round out the meal too. Oh if you like beer, bring your own, and come early because the close when the food runs out each night.
(5)David P.
Sorry this review has taken so long. I was in Mobile for work over a weekend last month and had to work long, inconvenient hours...it made it hard to visit The Brick Pit. The fact that they are closed on Sunday and Monday made me glad I had a complication at work and had to stay until Tuesday. I was there right before my flight back, a bit before when they opened at 11am, but they were courteous and let me in before I collapsed in despair of having been to Alabama sans BBQ. I went all out and had the 1/2 smoked pulled pork and 1/2 BBQ Rib plate for lunch ($8.99), with homemade cole slaw and BBQ beans. A lot for breakfast, but I had a nightmare of foodless connections ahead of me. Best to start fortified. Don't remember the rest, except a haze of pork, beef, and some mighty flavorful BBQ...full of spice and smoke, juicy and tender...then looking down, despondent, at a couple of bare bones on an empty plate. Next time I get to work in Mobile, I'll look for the little Weber grill in front of your sign. If it's smoking, I know there's crazy goodness waiting for me inside.
(5)Tina M.
We arrived with high hopes and left feeling alright, not thrilled. I had the pulled pork, my boyfriend had the ribs. I think the ribs were better. For me, great BBQ lies in the sauce, and this sauce didn't knock my socks off. The sides were good, even though my friend and I both choked on the vinegar in the slaw (too much!). The beans tasted like they were out of the can. I felt 9.95 a plate was a bit pricey for the quality. Overall, decent. Left with full bellies. Burped up smoke for 24 hours after our meal.
(3)David P.
Finally got to try the infamous Brick Pit BBQ of Mobile. I was impressed. Got to try the pulled pork and chicken, and the ribs. The chicken was OK, had better. The pulled pork was the best I have ever had. It was so soft and juice. It pretty much broke apart by just poking it. So good! The ribs were great too. I can see why there is so much love for Brick Pit. Next time, I'm definitely saving room to try their famous banana pudding.
(4)Kim M.
The owner was sitting outside when we got there and asked us if we'd ever eaten there. He was so nice to let us eat even though we arrived at closing (we didn't realize the time.) The bbq was awesome. I loved my pork sandwich and my husband loved his chicken. The baked beans are very tasty. Will definitely go back.
(5)Rose S.
It's worth the trip. If you don't like to eat in the heat, visit during the cooler months.
(4)Amber A.
Best BBQ in Mobile! Super tender & moist. Smokey flavor but not overbearing. I like the hot sauce better but both are good. I picked up a 5lb tray for a party and everyone raved about it. It was the hit of the party!
(5)William B.
The Brick Pit is another Mobile institution. As such it is either loved or hated (I'm in the former category) with very few people in between. Even though I normally eschew ribs because they are difficult to eat without getting messy, this is one of the few places where I'll dig in to the ribs. There's lots of rich, wood smoke flavor in the tender, moist meat. Just typing this is making me want some.
(5)caree c.
Ambiance is cool and funky for the most part (except the tv blasting fox news). But considering all the accolades and press this place has received, I just don't get it; not impressed at all. The ribs were drowned in sauce and a tad overdone, the beans seemed straight from a can and the potato salad was just ok, a bit heavy on the onion. The last straw was the bland tea. How do you mess up tea? By watering it down, that's how. Sorry, just not impressed with this 'Mobile Institution".

The is BBQ heaven. I was on my way on a BBQ tour of the South (started in the Carolinas, then through Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and then headed north again) and this place shined. In fact, I was there in August and am STILL thinking about the ribs. If you're in the area or within 40 minutes or so, IT IS worth your time to divert and stop in at the Brick Pit. I'm pretty sure the women in the back will be disaffected by your entrance. Don't worry. And I'm pretty sure you'll find the environment more joint than restaurant. Don't worry. Whatever magic they have is lodged in that smoker, which in a rib joint is exactly where you want all the magic to be. Those ribs were all that and the bag of chips. Gorgeous. Magical. [Insert adjective here.] Really and truly.

This is a must stop place if you are in Mobile. Some of the best ribs they fall off the bone. Spicy sauce is great. Sweet tea not as sweet as I like but who cares didn't come here for the tea. And you must at least try the banana pudding!

I love BBQ and have been to a few of the top-rated barbecue places in the country, including the Brick Pit, and this is hands down the best place to go for a pork sandwich. Their pork is smoked for 30+ hours and is so soft and tender it will blow your mind. The sides and the sauce are both really tasty too, but for me it is all about that pork. I really want to try their ribs, but every time I go in I can't pass up that pork sandwich! Every time I'm near Mobile I make it my business to go to the Brick Pit, and I will keep coming back!

It just doesn't get any better than this!

I don't care where you come from or where you are going, the Brick Pit is the best BBQ in the world. Period. I've been to Kansas City I've lived in North Carolina, I've lived in Texas, and I've been to Memphis on what was literally a BBQ vacation, and I've never had better Q anywhere. The old man who tends the fire out back is some kind of god who will never die, but will simply go up in smoke one day and return to Olympus. All hail the Brick Pit.

The best BBQ dinner my family and I have EVER had. Chicken and Pulled Pork were both incredible. Try the banana pudding.

My daughter just loved writing on the wall. All the employees were very friendly and the meat was excellent. The sides were just as good. Highly recommended with reasonable prices. Good Family environment.

The meat here is amazing. It is like eating smoke in meat form. The sauce, however, is not to my taste. Too much vinegar for me. If the sauce was good, I'd give it a 5, but the sauce drops it down a bit. Still the best smokey ribs in Mobile.

Great smokey barbecue and I loved spicy sauce. Service was very friendly and quick. The ribs were amazing and fall of the bone. Pulled pork was very tasty. It may not look like much on the outside but it is a true diamond in the rough!

Went here for lunch today. Had BBQ ribs and possibly the best I have ever had. This place is a little hole in the wall restaurant that I would never have found if it were not for Yelp. Had top ratings and deserved all of it. Would recommend this place to everyone who loves BBQ.

Best BBQ in Mobile! The sweet tea is great! So is the pulled pork and the banana pudding for dessert! Must try!

Best BBQ in the area! I usually get pulled pork sandwich --- just can't get away from it! Baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw --- it's all good. By the way, if you choose to dine in, the place is BYOB -- saves lots of $$$!

I have only had the pulled pork so far and it is fantastic. The sauce is NOT vinegar based.... its thick and semi-sweet, the way i like it! The coleslaw is also yummy!

Let me admit - I become aroused when I go by a barbecue restaurant - that doesn't mean I like every barbecue restaurant because they, like pretty women, can let you down - here's the key to real satisfaction -the meat. I recently tried the Brick Pit -twice for lunch, pork sandwiches, and once for dinner the rib plate. Usually, if a barbecue restaurant is in business the sauce is going to be okay, so what separates these restaurants is the meat. My old grandma can eat ribs from the Brick Pit because you just suck the meat from the bone; there's no need for teeth. When you are done you're all fulfilled, relaxed and feel like you want to light one up - I'm talking after eating at the Brick Pit, where they have reasonable prices and good sauce butt it's all about the meat - go there, you'll be satisfied.

like they say there... It's Serious Bar-B-Que!!!!! The lunch menu, you can't go wrong with.. seriously.. the pork is smoked for like 30 hours, the ribs for over 10. the food on lunch menu is simple, 3 plates, each at 6.75. Check it out. Good eatin' ya'll!!

Not the best BBQ, not close. Their Spicy sauce was mild at best, and very little smoke flavor to the meat. I invited out of town guests to eat there based on the reviews, and we were all disappointed. I had high hopes, but was very disappointed.

Regardless of your BBQ style preference, The Brick Pit is the best smokehouse in the country. The authentic smokey flavor yet tender and juicy ribs and pulled pork are amazing. The Brick Pit is unmatched by Texas or Kansas City.

An easy-going joint that makes pigs fly. The barbecue is transcendent.

This GREAT BBQ. Their response to Dreamland moving into Mobile................."This ain't a DREAM - its the real thing". How true!!! Local and authentic southern bar-b-que - that's all I can say. Near the University of South Alabama - this is my favorite bar-b-que in Mobile (see review on Saucy Q). Like I said in my Saucy Q review - BBQ is a very personal thing - but I can't imagine that ANYONE who loves BBQ would not appreciate The Brick Pit and the time they put into producing a wonderful piece of smoked meat. It is not "over a fire" - quickly cooked stuff - it is SMOKED - really SMOKED - for hours and hours. And unlike most BBQ restaurants - they have a choice of sauces - all of which are excellent! I like the pulled pork best - you can't go wrong with smoking a wonderful cut of pork for 30 hours. The ribs and chicken are good - but the pulled pork is something to write home about - not to mention thanking your lucky stars that there are still restaurants who will put that much time into preparing something with tradition!!!!!!!!!!! If you're in Mobile for a visit - or even if you live here and haven't tried it - - please treat yourself and realize what great smoked meat can taste like. The only way you could possibly beat this is at the home of a southern BBQ purist who is really trying to impress you with their BBQ skills . While you are waiting for that invitation - walk into the Brick Pit anytime and get it!!!!!!!!!!!
