India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. I know I say this (almost) every time I find a new Indian place, but seriously this one is the best in town - so long as you avoid the buffet. They have a lunch buffet - but seriously, its lacking in choices. You are way better off ordering from their extensive menu - and you can't really go wrong.

We have been regulars here for a while and have witnessed the restaurant's service go from good to worse. Apart from the fact that the taste of the food has turned out to be mediocre for several of our visits, the ambience takes a big hit by the music choices and sound levels maintained at the restaurant. The staff is rude while interacting with customers and its disappointing to see an Indian restaurant in the area tread a path downhill.

Excellent food. Prepared when ordered. Excellent service. Aithentic tasting amd made to your spice level. Everything is great and can have complete vegaterian meal.

Great place! The atmosphere is very intimate/authentic Indian décor. Staff was friendly and we got seated right away. We did have to wait a little while for the food but once I actually tasted it all was forgiven :-) We definitely should have checked out the menu before arriving because it was a little confusing and we probably asked our poor waiter a million questions before ordering. I got the goat curry - medium and cheese naan. For those who aren't used to eating Indian food, proceed with caution because they use A LOT of spices that might make your tummy rumble. If you get the cheese naan I would recommend you order it with your drinks because that took the longest to come out. Overall it's a great place! I will definitely be back!

I had to give the Alabama Indian restaurants a second chance. Since Indian Palace was a bit of a let down I am please to say Saffron was a hit. The service is a bit slow but it's a small family operation and they are doing their best. This place is busy and there are a lot of Indian folks here. These are good signs. Fr the basket of chips and crackers with Mi t sauce and tamarin to my chicken Korma everything was excellent. I recommend this place and am happy to say spicy here means spicy. Not too hot to kill the taste.

We've found our new FAVorite Indian restaurant here in northern Alabama! Coming from SoCal where we had a variety of authentic cuisines to choose from, we've found it difficult to experience similarly in the almost 2 years since moving out here. But every now and then as we venture out and explore new restaurants will find a hidden gem worthy of a review as this one is. Upon entering for dinner tonight, we were welcomed to sit anywhere we preferred. We quickly scanned the dimly lit ambiance and chose a table against a wall across from where the only other couple in the restaurant were on the opposite side of the restaurant. We like our privacy. :) Lizette, our waitress, promptly offered to take our drink order as my husband helped me remove my jacket and pulled out my chair to sit down (yes, there are still some gentlemen out there and I'm grateful God granted me one as my husband for life). Shortly after that came a basket w a variety of colorful rice chips and wheat/rice circle chips with two dips - mint chutney and tandoori sauce (I think that's what it was?!) for us to nibble on. Our mouths watered looking over the menu. Everything was reasonably priced. We settled for the Cheese Naan (4 big pieces) to start off with. My husband opted for the Lamb Saag at a spicy level while I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala at a medium spicy level for our dinner entrees. The wait was not long. Both arrived and were served in interesting copper/gold-like dishes, each with separate plates of rice (refer to attached images). After blessing the food, we dove right in without delay! The Lamb Saag had a nice kick to it (too spicy for me but perfect for the hubby). The Chicken Tikka Masala had a good creamy punch to it with a perfect medium spicy level where I can actually still taste the flavor and not have to deal w a runny nose from anything spicier than medium. Nevertheless, both entrees were succulent and flavorsome!!,,, so delectable that we finished our food to the very last drop - believe it or not. No doggy bags for us here and definitely no room for dessert! ;) By the time we finished our dinner, we noticed that the crowd must have rolled in while we were focused on enjoying our dinner together (celebrating 21 months of marriage) and it was no longer just two couples as in the beginning. Will we be back? Well, with an attentive and very kind staff, plus genuine Indian food which is rare here in the south, you can surely bet we'll be back! Cool thing too to note was that we came here on a Groupon ($11 for $20 worth of food). This authentic Indian restaurant is definitely worth a visit even without a Groupon!! Thank you, Saffron Indian Restaurant, Lizette, and the rest of the staff, for serving authentic Indian food. Y'alls have 2 new satisfied customers that will be back soon, if not often!! ;)

Best Indian food in Huntsville/Madison area HANDS DOWN!! Small place and the food is aunthentic. I always eat at lunch because I love the buffet, I get to try everything. This place is much better that the famous Sitar on Jordan lane. I tried both places , I love saffron all the way.
(5)Britni C.
I came here for lunch and it was very good. They sat me immediately. Buffet was stocked with food, the atmosphere and smell was that of India, friendly staff, calm setting. When I came, it was not busy at all. I would definitely come again!

Of the Indian restaurants we have tried here in Alabama, this one is certainly the best! We have eaten here for both lunch and dinner. The lunch buffet is good because they switch up menu items constantly, and they don't keep the dishes out for too long, once it has been eaten, they will cook a different dish or eliminate it from the buffet (yeah for trying to keep a buffet fresh). While the lunch buffet is a great deal and quite tasty, ordering off the menu is definitely better. Several times that we have eaten dinner here we have not been disappointed. The dinner portions are not overly large, but the appetizers are (each appetizer easily feeds 4-6, and the sample platter is a giant meal unto itself). We have never had a problem with service, we've had multiple waiters come often to refill our drinks and remove plates as we progressed through the meal.
(5)Archana S.
Great ambience. I was there for buffett. The food was very authentic and perfectly cooked. I should it was the best Indian restaurant in Alabama.
(5)Steven L.
Good Indian lunch buffet, lots of interesting choices I hadn't had elsewhere. Quick service. Pans on the buffet were quickly refilled as well as our beverages. One of the better mango lassi I have ever had.

I've been here like 3 weeks out of 4 so far this year. I would've come last week had I actually been in town. To say that Saffron is officially on the lunch circuit is almost as understand as saying the staff might as well grab some job applications for my lunch crew and myself. I'm scratching my head at the earlier reviews talking about the lack of service. I've never had a problem. The only time we have a gaffe was when the young lady comes out to tell us the extra naan was taking so long because there was an order of chicken tandoori ahead of ours. To me, that actually speaks to a degree of authenticity that I can appreciate. And I'm rarely in a rush (or I won't come). But again, the servers are downright sweet and at the worst service is friendly. Now... The food. So far, I haven't tried the buffet but I don't see a point at this point; I actually prefer the A la carte menu and the small copperish pots that the curries are served in. Plus, the buffet looks to be only a slither of the much more encompassing menu; there are about 80 items on the menu... and I'll probably go through them all. I hadn't had mango pickle in quite some time and now... I've even convinced the the crew that they like it, too. Big hits at our table include the lamb curry, lamb chettinad, goan fish curry, chicken sukka, and the samosas. One of the lunch crew enjoyed the chicken tikka but I still hold that it's just ok... especially given all the other wonderful choices. Next week... I'll try the dosas to see how they stack up.

I was nearby, there aren't a ton of choices in the area if you don't want to stray too far, and I had bookmarked this place already based on the reviews...so I stopped in for lunch. Let me start by saying I had never tried Indian food prior to this visit and that means I have no idea how Saffron compares to other Indian restaurants. I'm not really fond of buffets but I figured that since I didn't know one dish from the other this would be a good opportunity to sample the cuisine. The buffet was clean and well organized and they appeared to have a good selection. There were at least 5 or 6 meat options, several vegetable options, a couple of appetizer style choices, one soup, and a variety of sauces. My biggest complaint was that the chicken was barely warm but when I told the waitress about it she immediately went to check the temperatures. I tried bites of several items. A few things, like the Chicken Tikka Masala, didn't have much flavor. I was expecting a little more punch than what was offered but I really don't know how it's supposed to taste. These were my favorites: 1. Lentil soup-this was packed with flavor, a little spicy. 2. Naan- OMG I've had naan from the grocery store but I loved this fresh naan, a little chewy with crispy edges. I ate way more than I should. 3. Chili chicken- this had a little more flavor than the other chicken options. I liked the blend of spices on the chicken. 4. Saag Paneer- (spinach and cottage cheese) like an Indian version of spinach dip. It was delicious paired with naan. Honorable mentions: -Tandoori chicken-tender chicken legs but not an overwhelming flavor -Hakka noodles-very good flavor -Mint chutney- I don't know what the heck you're supposed to put this on but I tried a delicious dab as I took baby steps into the world of Indian food Verdict: I would definitely come back and focus on those dishes I really loved.

My husband I decided to go here, and neither of us had ever had Indian food and were very excited to try it. We are pretty ordinary people, so I was really surprised when the staff acted like they didn't want us there. I had to ask to be seated, with glaring looks from whoever sits behind the counter. Upon being seated, the waitress walks off and never came back. I made eye contact a few times and she just kept going. In this time 2 different 4-person Indian families came in, had drinks ordered & served--then appetizers ordered & served---by our same waitress--who still had not returned to give us a menu or take a drink order. We ended up walking out, feeling very unwelcome.
(1)Leigh M.
Love this place. The good is great and service is friendly. Don't be afraid to try it. The staff will help you pick dishes and they ask how spicy you want it.
(4)Rhianna A.
The servers were very friendly. The hostess has some beautiful henna on her arms. The place was clean and smelled good. My only issue is that at lunch it is strictly buffet so no vindaloo for me unless I go at dinner time.
(4)Neekosum N.
Ate buffet here. Food is ok. Sambar and curries are below average. Rice sucks. Appetizers are good, staff is friendly. If not for those I will give it only 2 stars.
(3)Christopher F.
Very good excellent prices too. We had the vegetable biryani and tikka masala. The service is sub par but the food is amazing perhaps the best indian restaurant in all of Huntsville.
(5)Brian H.
Excellent, I've eaten here many times and haven't had a bad meal yet. Everything tastes fresh and authentic. I highly recommend.
(5)Erin S.
Very good! We love the "rainbow" rice, which they were quick to bring more of when we ran out. Their "spicy" isn't very spicy, but the food is excellent. We will be back.
(4)Nate K.
Wow, this food was amazing. Definitely a place worth revisiting. The decor was nice with the Indian reds, the sound of modern Indian music, and the smell of incense hanging in the air. Great service, excellent food. I'd have to recommend the Chicken Curry, Saak chicken, and Chicken Tikka. The Mango milkshake and garlic naan were perfect side compliments to the main meal. I'll definitely be coming back here next time I get a chance.
(5)Frederick S.
Deliciously fresh and reasonably priced food combined with friendly staff make for a great experience.
(5)Panda B.
The food was good and flavorful. The goat curry was tender and had good curry herby and spicy taste to it. The chicken came pipping hot and nicely good.tl the garlic naan had very strong garlic taste and aroma. The server was nice and tentative. Though he became a bit flustered when more customers came. We were the only table to began with and at least 3-4 other tables joined during our meal. Biggest comPlain: very strong incense or some sort of oil odor. It irritated my eyes so badly and they got watery. Odd thing: they served sme sort of crackers/chips in odd shapes and sauces as appetizer. The sauces were good but the crackers/chips tasted odd. They should paird with naan or other bread instead. Overall, it's a decent Indian restaurant, just hopefully they fix the overwhelming odor/aroma. ---updated: returned in Nov 2014, thank goodness they cut back on the incense aroma. Excellent!
(4)Kirsten C.
I wanted so badly to like this place - it's much more convenient for me to get to than Sitar, my all time favorite indian restaurant ever, but I've eaten at Saffron three times now and it's been pretty awful each time. Just not delicious.
(1)Jeff J.
Saffron has a very good lunch buffet. My favorites are the chicken korma and the chili chicken. Occasionally the make kheer for dessert that I really enjoy. I just wish they had a set menu for the buffet, so that way I knew what days to get my favorites.
(4)Sarita R.
As close to having dinner in an indian family's home. (Believe me, I know what I am talking about.) I love that when you walk in, Lord Ganesha is there to bless the food journey you are about to experience. Aish took us to our table and gave us attentive service. The layout of the restaurant was reminiscent of Viet Huong but had its own Indian flavors via rich hues, music and the wafting mouth-watering scent of the food from the kitchens. I love that it affords you a family style of eating at the table. Eating in the restaurant is a must as compared to having it packed to go. Our favorite bread to get here is the garlic naan. Our favorite dishes are spicy channa masala (chickpeas), medium spicy saag panner (cheese blocks in spinach), malai kofta (vegetarian meatballs), chicken tikka masala though chicken korma is a near second, and tandoori chicken after the resting potential has been achieved. An all-sensory experience that won't make you hurt after as long as you take your time and don't overstuff yourself with food. Also, plenty for leftovers. Hindus don't believe in wasting food especially with so many others living without food. So don't leave it on your plates, take it home. You also know this place must be good with so many Indian people eating here.
(4)Marie S.
So my husband and I have been here at least 7 or 8 times since they opened. I am vegetarian, so I LOVE Indian food. My husband usually does not prefer Indian, but he now suggests to go to Saffron at least once a week. My favorites are the palak saag (spinach w/cheese) and chana masala. My husband loves the chicken tikka masala and chicken tikka saag. Both of us love the palak naan (indian cheese bread) and the regular cheese naan (mozzarella cheese stuffed naan, my favorite). We, too, enjoy the rainbow rice, but would be fine with just regular rice too since it seems this special rice puts a little burden on the kitchen which slows the kitchen down on busy weekend nights. It's a family run business, so we like to support that. The only downer is the chai tea which is very bitter compared to other Indian restaurants...perhaps too much cardamon. But we highly recommend this place. You'll love it! And i almost forgot they usually provide a free appetizer.

Excellent, I've eaten here many times and haven't had a bad meal yet. Everything tastes fresh and authentic. I highly recommend.

Very good! We love the "rainbow" rice, which they were quick to bring more of when we ran out. Their "spicy" isn't very spicy, but the food is excellent. We will be back.

Deliciously fresh and reasonably priced food combined with friendly staff make for a great experience.

I know I say this (almost) every time I find a new Indian place, but seriously this one is the best in town - so long as you avoid the buffet. They have a lunch buffet - but seriously, its lacking in choices. You are way better off ordering from their extensive menu - and you can't really go wrong.
