Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

We had a lively and friendly dining experience at El Omeca and enjoyed an authentic, fresh meal. The restaurant has that family-run coziness but very clean efficient at the same time. We were greeted immediately and seated at the bar and was serviced by the very welcoming Roxy. We both enjoyed our food, my husband got the california burrito (he is from LA and can attest to the authenticity and quality of the food!) and I got the grilled tilapia which was very tender. The portions are ample and prices reasonable ($10~$12/each). Will definitely go back again! Oh and do try their margarita while you are there.

Our server had a real challenge with English. The wife ordered the seafood tacos which was supposed to be three types of seafood. The dish has a shrimp taco, a taco made with grilled fish, and a taco with fried fish. When the meal was brought to the table there was no shrimp taco and all three tacos were fired fish. She complained to the server and he took it back to have it remade. When it came back out there was a shrimp taco but the other two were still fired fish and no grilled fish. She was so hungry she gave in and ate what she had. The margaritas were really great there.

The food was great. So Much Better than what Decatur/Hartselle has to offer. Good food, good service and a nice experience to boot. I recommend the steak burrito! The chorizo sauce will light you up! The Top Shelf Margarita will make it all better.

Decent food and drinks, good service. They have an expansive menu. Everything from burritos (huge ones!) to enchiladas (with every sauce you can imagine) and more. I have ordered a variety from the menu, burrito ranchero (burrito in sauce with toppings), guadalajara (one chicken enchilada and one chicken burrito). My husband really likes the huevos con chorizo and really likes it. Everything is pretty good, but nothing is outstanding. The menu is so expansive, at a certain point, it's all the same with minute differences. On the plate, I honestly can tell a difference between their burrito and enchilada sometimes. One is just wrapped smaller than the other. The sauces are good, but the red is a bit more smokey than usual red sauces. Green sauce is good. I'm not sure they have a "sour cream" sauce on the menu, which I usually love to eat! They serve you with chips and salsa. The chips are a bit thicker than are other Mexican restaurants in town, but the salsa is tasty! It has lots of flavor. They also serve you when you sit down with a side of beans, I guess for dipping with your chips. Margaritas are good and they have a happy hour M-F till 7pm. Service is usually attentive and helpful. Restaurant clean and atmosphere nice. Good place, overall.

El Olmeca is great mexican food for a great price! Food 4/5: the quality of ingredients seems to be about average, nothing super spectacular. However, the large variety of options that they offer is great! I was also pretty impressed with their taco salad. Most of the time taco salads are a lot of lettuce and a little bit of chicken and cheese, however here they give you lots of deliciously tender chicken in the salad so it's definitely filling. Service 4/5: I'm always promptly seated and served, the staff is very friendly and attentive. Atmosphere 3/5: it's not a place I'd go just to for the atmosphere, but definitely a good choice for food. Overall they offer great food for a very cheap price.

New favorite place. Great food, without being your run of the mill choices. Dishes had great presentation. Loved the ambiance. Been dying to go back more often. Wanted to eat there 3 times in one week. Can't sing its praises enough.

UPDATE: Thanks to the messages from the owner, I'm updating my rating. It is obvious he cares and that makes a huge difference. I'll chuck this bad experience to the table of drunk 20 something's being obnoxious and tying up our waitress too much. The margaritas are truly the bomb and I will be needing one soon! :) Prior: Ok, sadly our go to place has gone downhill the last couple of trips and it is mainly the service that has become downright ridiculous. Tonight is the last night for me here for a long time. The stars are ONLY for the food. We picked Mexican because it is usually quick. We've been here over an hour. ¡No más!

I love El Olmeca, the food is perfect, the staff is amazing and the atmosphere is fantastic. The owners and their family make everyone feel part of their family and special. Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

So I eat a lot of Mexican food. This was the most unusual Mexican food I've ever eaten. First. Chips and salsa - normal right? Except they brought out a bowl of beans - not like bean dip but like soup or before you smash the beans. I ate them with a fork - I wasn't sure what else to do with them! Then I had the you-pick-two kind of thing.... So I picked a "tostaguac" which is like a tostada but with Beef, beans and guac. But the guac was a dip not real guac. The shell was soggy - so it kind of made a mess. The other part was s chile relleno. Child relleno - kind of standard - right? Nope! The cheese and beef filling was grayish in color, bland and not at all like the other chile rellenos I've had in the past. Very disappointed overall. Service was so-so, ambiance was good!

First of all this restaurant has a very nice atmosphere. Easy to read menu with lots of choices. Was it the best Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at, no. Was it the worst, not even close. I have nothing negative to say about this place. I ordered the chimichanga and it was delicious. I did have them put the cheese sauce on the side. Nice big portion with Real tender shredded beef. Would I go back and eat here again? Absolutely!

Home made and consistently excellent. I bring my grandchildren here because nothing beats home cooking! Just a great home atmosphere and after 20 years in the Army and several corporations, nothing beats the feeling of belonging.

I give this place 3 stars because it doesn't distinguish itself one way or the other from the hundred other Mexican restaurants in the area. Food was good, not exceptional in any way, but good. Service was quick and prices were appropriate. I'll probably be back at some point but I have no reason to make it a go to spot or recommend it over several other very similar restaurants.

They serve beans with nachos along with salsa, which is nice for me, because I'm not a fan of salsa. We went with a fairly large group (11 or 12 of us) and they accommodated us easily. I ordered the tres amigo's (mexican rice with steak, chicken, and shrimp covered in the queso sauce) and it was pretty good. I don't distinctly remember the prices for entree's or drinks, but for 3 of us and a drink or two (me and my girlfriend didn't order any, but I got the birthday girl's check and I have no clue what she ate or drank) after the tip it was $50 which seems very reasonable. I'm not usually over in this area, or I would come by this place more often.

This has become our go to place for Mexican food. We have mostly focused on the a la carte menu. The tacos al pastor are the best in town and I would say even one of the best period. They are very authentic and remind me of the little stands in Sonora or in Mexico City. The carne asada and carnitas tacos are also quite excellent. We have tried other items (chile relleno and chile Rojo) in the menu and have been very satisfied. The salsa is very fresh, adequately seasoned and just the right amount of heat. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. A great place to bring the whole family.

We tried El Olmeca last weekend and really enjoyed it!!! it's a fairly sizeable place with, I believe two separate dining areas, and a small-ish bar. The small bar itself seats maybe 8 people and then there are several 2-tops and maybe 4-tops within the bar. The menu is pretty large and includes kids items. The tacos pastor were so good I could NOT wait to get home and try to replicate them myself. I eat every chance I get, on the "taco bus" on Governor's Drive, and LOVE their tacos, but these were just as good, if not better!! The chili relleno (sp?) that I tried wasn't anything special, especially since I tried the tacos pastor goodness first, ha ha! The chips and salsa were good. Dear Hubs tried some burrito they have. He cleaned his plate. It was a sizeable burrito. The bartender came by to chat and said a larger version of this burrito is offered and if you eat the whole thing within like 15 minutes you get, some type of prize or something. She said she knew of one guy who polished it off in ~ 8 minutes, and she said it is ~ 1 foot long!!!! Anyway, it's a locally owned restaurant with 5 different "stores" in the region. Do like we do, if you'd like, and enjoy yourself in the bar. There's a TV for watching the game, prompt service, decent wine, good prices and GREAT tacos el pastor. Hubs didn't complain about the top shelf marguerita (sp?) he got, so it must have been done right. The nice-sized patio will be a great place for warm-weather dining and has a super large outdoor patio umbrella. So, the patio is nicely appointed. I didn't give 5 stars b/c, like I say, the chili relleno was nothing special at all and the guacamole salad was just standard. It's located in the (sort of new) Kroger shopping center on the far right hand side of the strip mall.

I visited this restaurant as well while in Huntsville. Great food! I had the Carne Asada. Again so much food hard to finish. I highly recommend El Olmeca Mexican restaurant.

I've had mixed results at El Olmeca so far. Most dishes have just been average. The Huevos con Chorizo is outstanding. I also love the outdoor seating. The margaritas are very good.

We have always enjoyed eating here with our kids and larger groups. They have been quick to get us seated, to get drink orders and then food orders. They keep drink and chips filled. The wait staff has always been friendly along with the hostess staff. We love the vibrant decoration !

This is a yummy place to eat. We ordered a vegetarian fajhita and an extra sides of beans and rice, an additional side of rice, and another set of flour tortillas and it was less than $20.00 which ended up feeding three people. The vegetarian option is delish too. It has red, green, yellow bell peppers with broccoli, cauliflower, onions, carrots, and mushrooms. It's so tasty. Service is wonderful. I really I liked the chips and salsa the first time I went. Everything tasted very fresh, but the 2nd time I went it was a little more spicy than the first time. Still the food was delish! I would def. eat there again!

Just another North AL Mexican place, the type of place you can't swing a dead cat without hitting around here. They do have Mexican flag colored tortilla chips but other than that the menu is what you'd expect around here. So much so that you could probably order using the same menu numbers from your favorite Mexican place anywhere else in the HSV area. Not great but not bad either. Nothing new to offer the area.

Being from southern California I was afraid I wouldn't find decent Mexican in Alabama. El Olmeca put those fears to rest. I've only been a few times, but so far everything has been delicious. Just finished off the Chili Colorado...incredible (if you like spicy). Chimichangas are also first-rate. Highly recommend this place.

The menu and food at El Olmeca - Madison is standard; fairly much like you'd find at most other local Mexican restaurants. That said, El Olmeca is a fine restaurant that does what it does well. The service is good, the portions are generous, and the restaurant has drink specials that are worth checking out. (The 36 oz. mug of Dos Equis for $5.00 is as good as you're going to get.) A popular place, especially on Friday and Saturday; deservedly so.

We have eaten here at least a half dozen times in the last year and have been very pleased. The portions are sizeable; even if we go in hungry and ready to eat, we often end up with a take-away box. The guacamole is not spicy, and does not have tomatoes (a point of discussion in the family). The chips are tasty -although I'm not sure how authentic they are when they come in red and green colors. Service has been attentive. With family in town, we were a party of 10 and were seated and served as expeditiously and were not felt rushed to leave to open the tables for others. + clean (as are the restrooms) + free bean dip after 1700 - it does get loud - the booths are a challenge for little ones (there is a 4-6" opening between the seat and the back) - the entry area is small, so if there is a party waiting to be seated, it does get crowded to pay the bill and exit.

We've been to all of the standard Mexican restaurants around Huntsville and Madison, but this place may be our new favorite. I had the Chimichanga. The wife had a quesadilla. Everything was excellent. In a time when I'm used to be nickel and dimed at Mexican places (no guacamole, no cheese, ect) this place was a nice reprise. The food was fresh and prepared just the way we like it. We went at lunch and made it out for $13. We'll be back.
