Probably the best pizza in Huntsville (certainly the best I have found). I like the garlic cheese bread as well. It isn't NY style (which is my preference), but it is a good solid pizza that reminds me of an old time family pizzaria. I'm pretty sure that the pepperoni is hand sliced which was a welcomed surprise (they were quite generous with the toppings).

crispy crust. tangy sauce. high quality cheese (read: not greasy). variety of toppings. friendly, helpful staff. table seating or bar seating- no booths. beer on tap, soda, and sweet tea. several TVs and one retro juke box. check out big ed's!

If there's any restaurant I know, it's Big Ed's Pizza. I grew up on Big Ed's in the 90s when it was on Oakwood Avenue and my father has been frequenting Big Ed's since the 60s. You can certainly say that we've been regulars for long enough that they know us by name. Big Ed's has always been a non-chainy, laid back kind of pizza joint where you could take your family and shoot some pool, play an arcade game, and get some tunes going on the juke box. Sadly enough after two location changes that I can remember, there's no longer room for pool or arcade games. But, I think they're still rockin' the juke box. I miss the times my family would schedule the back room for birthdays and other shindigs. So, about the pizza. Did I mention my dad has been eating at Big Ed's since the 60s? There's nothing "chain" about the pizza served at Big Ed's. Thus, it does take a little longer for your order to come out. But hey, greatness takes time. The sauce is awesome, the cheese is, well, very cheesy. I'm talking cheesy where you take a bite and a string of it hangs from your mouth to the slice of pizza you're savoring. The toppings are generous. My ideal Big Ed's pizza will consist of either beef and mushrooms or a veggie pizza. Both are amazing. Support a local business that's been here for what seems like forever. It's a family favorite of ours and I imagine you'll enjoy the change from your everyday delivery.

I have loved their pizza for years, even when they were at their original location. The crust is just right....not thick, not too thin. If you've never tried it, ya gotta!

Big Ed's Pizzas has been around forever and that just doesn;t happen by accident! This is a great place, great food and great staff! I have eaten there a dozen times over the last couple of years and have been very happy every time. I always start with a salad (which is great, even though it is simple) and then a pizza. A pitcher of Yuengling is always a must, too. They have more than the usual Bud Light on tap...yay! The service is perfect to me. You walk in and sit where you please and someone is quick to acknowledge you. After that, they take your order, get your stuff to ya and then check in from time to time. If you want a server hanging around your table, making chit chat conversation or checking in on you every three minutes, then the service may not be up to your standard. Pizza takes a bit to get to the table, but it's worth the wait. You can call ahead and they will get it started for you if this is an issue.

Fresh pizza. Great service. Decent beer selection (they carry the local ones too). It's just a little out of the way for us and in a shady-ish looking area. The front of the store had seen better days too. Though, it's one of the better pizzza joints around town.

Awesomeness. Hands down the best pizza in town! It's a place that's always packed. Be prepared to wait for your pizza even if it's not packed. The pizza is worth the wait.

The pizza overall is really quite good, but they use canned mushrooms (well, they could come in glass, but unlikely) and as if that's not bad enough, they do not drain them well enough and the water from them tends to make the pizza just a little bit "soaky" wet..... it does not affect the taste much, but the feeling of wet crust in your mouth is ..... well, gross kinda.

Hot N Fresh! Excellent Pizza and Great Service! Perfect combo of crispy thin crust, sauce, and toppings. Closest to NY style pizza I've had in Huntsville! Mmmmmmm!

Huntsville's oldest pizza place. Excellent food and service. I recommend the buffalo chicken pizza or the bacon cheeseburger burger.

We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and were quickly greeted. I ordered a calzone which was quite large, and my husband got a small pizza. Both were very delicious!

Only once before have I been so unsure of a rating. My first time there today, and I'm torn. I loved the 60's mom n pop local pizza hangout ambiance (think "Happy Days"). Hanging out there with friends on a Friday night and drinking beer and listening to the juke box would be terrific. The vibe is one of the best I've seen/felt in town. The pizza itself, though, I'd rate as a 2. Baked slowly in a seasoned gas oven from the 60's, the unusual aroma from the oven was actually appealing. Different. Vintage pizza, if you will. The crust was charming... Crispy, perfectly baked, and looked like what a pizza place in an Italian village would serve. But it was completely tasteless. For the taste, I rate it is 0. I even lifted up the cheese to see if they forgot to put sauce on it. There was some, but very little. I ordered onions on it, and while I say kudos for covering the pizza with onions (just the way I like it), even they were tasteless. I'll be back to try the calzone, and hope it has flavor. I want to love this place, so it's definitely worthy of another try.

This a traditional "mom and pop" place. The food is all homemade, the staff is related and invested in their business, and the atmosphere is very family oriented. The cheese bread and marinara sauce is my favorite thing, but the pizza is amazing as well. It is not Little Caesar, it won't come out at the speed of light cuz they make things as you order them. It is worth the extra few minutes for the effort involved. Call ahead for quicker service, they are happy to get you going, and they offer take out too. Grub South will also deliver for a small service fee.

One of Huntsville's landmark pizza stops. There Hawaiian pizza is hands down my favorite pizza of all times. My family & friends have been frequenting here for years. If you ever go through Huntsville, give Big Ed's a try and you will definitely be back for more.

Our first time to Big Eds, it was fantastic!!! Service was excellent and our pizza was delicious!!! We will be calling this our new favorite pizza joint!!!

Big Ed's is suppose to be the best pizza in Huntsville. Well I would have to disagree on that note. Or maybe it is, and I had it on a off night. The pizza was not fully cooked enough when it came out, making it too doughy. Some pizzas can be eaten this way but considering the other one we had was almost burnt it looked like. That making me wonder how do they serve it? The service we had was okay, the girl who took our order did not really seem to know the menu too well. I believe she mentioned she was new, so I will give just a little more slack on her.

  • Corey J.

The calzones here didn't use to contain ricotta which to a purist makes them something other than a calzone. They now do contain ricotta so all is right in the world. They are as delicious as ever. Maybe even better!

It is a perfectly adequate pizza place. Nothing really to write home about, but as options in Huntsville go it deserves a rating of "A-OK". One pizza and two drinks plus tip totalled around $35. As much as I'd prefer to support a local restaurant, you'll get a much better deal on a pizza of similar quality from a chain.

I came at lunch and there were just a few tables filled. I ordered a pepperoni and sausage calzone. The calzone was large enough to last me two meals, so for $8 with tax that's a pretty good deal. The crust was a little overdone (see picture I added). I'm being picky in saying if it were a pizza crust that was a little too crispy I would have been happy but I enjoy the soft pocket texture of a calzone. I thought that the calzone itself was lacking a little flavor. I couldn't figure out if it was the toppings or the crust that was a little bland. My husband ate my leftovers and together we decided that maybe the toppings weren't adding the flavor we so desired. He did say that he thought the sauce was really good. I wouldn't mind returning to try a pizza because if they brown up the crust on that it should be good. And maybe I would get enough toppings for there to be a party of flavor. I'm sure if I were a drinker this would be my happy place. The staff was friendly and that's a plus. I wouldn't deter you from going here and it certainly seems like from the other reviewers they have a good following, BUT I just know I've had much better calzones elsewhere.

Big Ed's is the best pizza in Huntsville. Period. For take out - it's a dream. We've ordered it for pick up - the Big 8 (sub jalepenos for onions) and had it with a bottle of cab at home more times than I can count. The crust is crunchy, the sauce is spicy and robust, and the toppings are generous. But when you have the chance to join Big Ed's for a sit down, you won't be disappointed. Love the atmosphere with tons of windows, love the beer selection and the service is spot-on. Total win here. Blows Sam and Greg's out of the water.

  • Happiness L.

Shawn and Patsy...thanks for a great time even on a super busy night. You have great pizza in the "Big 8" and are kind. The service is slower on a busy night. So come in, relax, and enjoy a good time and good food.

I guess for Huntsville, Alabama this would be considered very good. However, don't for one minute even think to compare this pizza parlor to ANY in the northeast or anywhere that knows good, quality pizza. First, no slices, haha, what a joke. ATTENTION SOUTHERNERS PIZZA PARLORS SERVE SLICES OF PIZZA!! Second, a calzone has ricotta cheese in it to begin with, it is not an additional item!! Third, mini meatballs on an open face sandwich is not an authentic sub. Mini meatballs are served in lasagna not for a hero. Was there anything good, well the server was a very nice, very friendly woman. She was polite and efficient.

I grew up in Huntsville and get to go back a lot to visit my mom. I have loved Big Ed's from as far back as 1967 when I first discovered it. You can always know that you are going to get a great pizza for sure and anything else on the menu will be great as well. Being a family owned business, they really do care if you are happy with your food and service. My wife, son, mom and I were in Big Ed's last Friday Night (1/4/2013) and it was packed. They had two employees call in sick with the flu which is bad right now. We saw they they were behind cleaning up tables, so we just started cleaning tables off for people to sit. We feel that we are part of the "Big Ed's" family and we always want to help if they need it. After we got seated, we watched people come in and just stand by a table that needed cleaning off until someone came by and cleaned it off. This is a wonderful place where you are part of the family. You've seen on the Food Network where they go to a dinner and a customer with a coffee pot comes by and refills your coffee cup, That is the type of place this is and you'll love it. You'll love your pizza and it will always have plenty of toppings, cheese and flavor. The selection of beer is good and always cold, plus is you like southern sweat tea, they have plenty of it for you. I hope you try it when your in Huntsville, or if you live there, go by and try it. Everyone there loves working at Big Ed's and you'll know it.

I'm no pizza freak, but this is hands down the best pizza I've had in Huntsville! The pizza is great, even though it's a bit slow in coming. What makes up for the lack of speed? The service. Ironic, huh? The family who runs this place are just that awesome! They love to chat and are hilarious. We go at least once a month to get our pizza fix, and we always order the meatalicious (sp?) and eat around half of it there and take the rest to go. It warms up just as great as it is in the restaurant! Now, I know nothing of the great pizza reputations between Chicago and New York, but I do know I love this place. If you're reading this, please go try it! The price is for drinks, pizza, and tip. It's on the lowest possible end of the 2 dollar signs!

By far, this is the best pizza in town, not just because it is locally owned and operated, but because the quality of the pies are unbelievable. The toppings are fresh and delicious. They offer a wide variety of beers, local microbrews, as well as other interesting beers. Of course, their domestic selection is also good, if that's your thing.

  • Mike N.

Nice people, yes. Pizza is not very flavorful (no garlic or spices) and my family got sick afterwards. I'd recommend looking elsewhere if you don't know the folks there. I cant figure out what the other reviewers are excited about on this place.

This is the best pizza in the south. I have tried many places and no other place comes close. I have been eating their pizza since 1970 and go there anytime I am in Huntsville.

Have been eating here since I can remember and they were at their Oakwood location. My parents even got engaged there. I have many memories of eating pizza, dancing to the jute box and playing pool. Will always remember Steve and his love for Elvis. His son does a great job at keeping that same great pizza. My only complaint is the new location is wayyyy too small for the amount of ppl that want to eat there.

This place is my new favorite! The pizza was delicious, and the staff was friendly, attentive and informative. It is a nice place to hangout. Lots of windows so it is bright and cool. Also, they have a good selection of microbrews on tap and in the bottle. Great place!

Big Ed's has been around a long time in Huntsville in various locations. The Pizza is always excellent and for a pizza place, the beer selection is good. Their calzones might be the best in Huntsville! They don't have anchovies, which I love on pizza, but if you bring your own, they will add them for you.

After reading mixed reviews we decided to try take out pizza tonight from Big Ed's. Our cheese and tomato pizza was SOO bland. The garlic cheese bread had zero garlic flavor and zero flavor period. I don't know why people like this place so much. The cheese calzone had NO flavor...we didn't even finish it. For some reason they wouldn't let me have tomatoes in the calzone. That was odd to me and the girl couldn't offer me a reason why she just said it isn't on the calzone list so they can't put them in there even if I want them in it. I assure you we will NOT get anything from this restaurant again. Rafael's on Winchester Rd. beats Big Ed's big time! Now THERE'S some flavor!

I like this pizza, the previous reviews about sum it up. It's like Mellow Mushroom but not as high priced, and with a little less selection on toppings.

Found out about this place from a friend. Apparently it's an institution, been around since the 60's I think. Felt like an old school Pizza Hut to me. I was pretty impressed with the bottled beer selection. Decent tap selection too. Went with the basic pepperoni and mushroom pizza. Cheese wasn't oily. Crust was thin and crunchy. I would have given one more star if the mushrooms were fresh instead of canned. Service for friendly. Was there for lunch, pretty dead. Would go back.

I recently went back to Big Ed's Pizza. We called ahead to place our pick-up order. We got a large (16") Big-8 for under $20. The result? Fantabulous. The pizza was fresh, hot, tasty. The topping was generous. The crust was perfect. It is everything I'd expect a pizza to be. I now have determined the take-out is a better option than dine-in. They told us on the phone it will be a 40 minutes wait when we placed the order. So for the pick-ups, we can do our own stuff and pick it up when it's ready. However, 40 minutes is a bit too long to wait in the restaurant.

Whole experience was great. Started with friendly service. Beer selection was great - tried the local monkeynaut. Truly enjoyed pizza - the sausage and crust stood out as exceptional. Atmosphere was fun and price was good. Highly recommend stopping if your looking for pizza in Huntsville area. Temperature is a little cool but its January and there are lots of Windows.

Small mom & pop type place great local draft beer selection very friendly staff had a Calzone which was excellent they have a home made tomato sauce which uses real tomatoes not some paste flavor was really good. Could get a bit loud if the room were more crowded, ergo bit lower than 5 star rating...

Big Ed's is my favorite pizza joint. Their crust is outstanding and their beer selection is just as good. The atmosphere is friendly (a bit loud at times) and I have never had less than stellar service. I highly recommend Big Ed's to anyone!

My meetup group had settled on another venue before this one could get suggested so I decided to host a gathering posted on geocaching.com in celebration on 10-10-10. Naturally, I thought 10 people would attend so that was the number I mentioned when asking for permission/approval from the managers. As RSVPs came in, I tried to drop by and tell them the numbers were higher than expected. I went on Monday to find out they're not open on Mondays. I went back mid-afternoon to read [again] that they don't open till 5:00 on Tuesdays. I did finally make it back in on Thursday (good thing, 'cause that would be a little late notice to change locations!) and they said 40 was still find. Turns out that over 50 cachers attended. We were a bit of hassle to the staff upon arrival - everyone just wanted to stand around and talk... and talk... and exchange caching stories... and talk. Once we sat down, service and food was terrific. It had been recommended to call ahead to place your order. Several people had done so and were very pleased - as were those that didn't order till they got there. My message board is chock full of praise for the food, staff and service (and great hosting job, too -- thank you very much!). Will probably use them again - but maybe with a smaller crowd. :)

While visiting Huntsville, we stopped at Big Ed's for take-out. They quickly took our order, we waited for 25 minutes on a Friday night, and got a great tasting pizza (pepperoni, black olive, and mushroom).
