Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

By far the best pizza place in miles and I'm not a Chicago style girl. My husband and I go at lunch time because it is hard to get into at night. You can call ahead for take out, but be aware that it is going to take about 40 minutes. Okay, so, back to lunch. They are only open for lunch on Friday and Saturday. A bit of a bummer, but hey, I'll take what I can get. My husband goes straight for the deep dish carnivore lover. It is really good. Crust is thin (I think even thinner than the thin crust) and filled with cheese and meat and whatever else they put in there to make it irresistible. The only reason I haven't gone over to the dark side is that I just can't let myself eat all that ozzing warm scrumptious cheese. One slice is okay for my husband. He could eat more, but he drinks beer instead. They have some good local beers. I get the thin crust pepperoni and it is amazing. The crust is perfect. Not like Domino's thin, but thin enough and whatever dough they use makes you want to eat every bite of crust. The topping is proportionate to the crust. For me, one slice is plenty. Place is clean, service is good and friendly. The parking is sometimes an issue as it is an older lot that fills up with todays beast size cars. Again, my reason for going at lunch.

HOLY GUACAMOLE! What delicious pies we got from Tortuga's Pizza last night. We got the Chicago "Stuffed" Deep dish Style and How Great Thou Art! I got The "Carne" as in Carnivore that's a meat lovers fantasy with the house made red sauce, Sweat Italian Sausage, Onions, Canadian bacon, Pepperoni, Beef, Garlic and lots of love. The "Traditional" with that same Great Red Sauce, Onions, Green Bell Peppers, Sweat Italian Sausage and Garlic. YUM- We'll be back soon!

Tortugas is an incredible gem out in Hoover. They are obviously known for their deep dish (stuffed) pizza. But their thin crust is surprisingly delicious. I thoroughly love both. Since I am a meat eater, the carnivore stuffed pizza is right up my alley. It is one of a kind in Birmingham. But very accurate to what I know about Chicago Deep Dish. It looks different with the sauce on top. But trust me, there are PLENTY of toppings and delicious, melty cheese in there. The thin crust has a very crispy yet fluffy crust to it. Everyone there is extremely friendly. Especially the owner, Carlos. I heard they may open a location downtown. And I really hope they do. The only thing that keeps me from eating here regularly, is the distance.

I am from Chicago and came in with a bias. How could someone three states away make my beloved hometown pizza? The moment I walked in the door, the delicious smell hit my nose and I knew it would be good. Seeing the Chicago sports memorabilia instantly brought me home. Not to mention, the pizza was amazing! I will be back!

This place is off the chain good!!!! Its been a while since I've had Gino's East or Giordano's, but I would say Tortuga's is just as good in the deep dish department!!! Tried my daughters lasagna and a slice of thin crust too, but the deep dish is where it's at!!!! I had the sausage pepperoni deep dish and my wife had the carne deep dish!!! I finished mine but was full, and she couldn't they give you so much!

Easily the second worst pizza I have ever had. Picked up a deep dish for an evening of college football and was terribly disappointed when I got back to my hotel room! The Chicago pizza powers that be should come down here and remove every Bears, Bulls, Cubs, etc. pennant in the place!!! I may give the thin crust a try, but I will really have to craving pizza to do so!!! BAD!!!!!!! By the way, I am baffled by all of the "rave" reviews I am finding on here...#CLUELESS

Best Chicago Style Pizza that's not actually in Chicago. Great stuff.
(4)Laine C.
We got the stuffed "traditional" pizza. Truthfully, it was ok, but I have had better. I was very disappointed, because I had been looking forward to it for a while. Like other reviewers have stated, the sauce was very watery and needed a little spice or something. The ingredients were chopped in very large pieces, but there was not many toppings to begin with! I might eat it again if I was in the area, but truthfully, I could eat closer to home, and get a better tasting pizza, from Pizza Hut.

Incredible Chicago style pizza! It will save you a trip to Chicago--certainly the best deep dish pizza in The Ham. Even the thin crust pizzas are really good here. I would recommend the deep dish carne with extra sauce and light garlic. The owners are wonderfully friendly. Wait staff is efficient and pleasant. I have never had a bad time at this place, and I am here often.

You would think that this restaurant hidden in a strip center off highway 150 in Hoover would be a guilty secret, but you would be surprised at how many people, including myself, will tell you that this is the best pizza in Birmingham! They specialize in the Chicago stuffed variety and I would put their pies above most of the ones I've had in the Windy City. The Wrigleyville with sausage and veggies and the Carne loaded with meats are two of my favorites. The stuffed pizzas take about 45 minutes so either call ahead or plan accordingly. They also have regular thin crust pizza for those who prefer that variety. Lasagna is also on the menu, and theirs is some of the best in town. Their menu also includes a few sandwiches just in case someone doesn't want pizza. Beer and wine is also served. Tortugas is open for lunch on Friday and Saturday and offers some of their stuffed and thin crust pizzas by the slice. For only a few dollars more you can add a salad and drink to your lunch slice or lasagna and have a very filling meal at a reasonable price. Lunch slices are served within a few minutes, so it's easy to get in and out quickly. The restaurant is filled with both local and Chicago sports memorabilia and there are several TVs around the restaurant usually tuned to the sports channels. A few tables are located outside on the sidewalk to enjoy in warm weather. Tortugas is often like the "Cheers" of Hoover where the extremely friendly owners and employees know and greet their large number of regular customers by name. I highly recommend becoming a regular customer!

Deep dish pizza, need I say more? It's awesome and unique to Bham. Worth the wait!
(5)Rob R.
This is and has been consistently for years one of my favorite restaurants in town. The deep dish pizza is the best I have had outside of Chicago, but what truly sets this restaurant apart from so many others is the owners. Their management style is of a family run business and I have never had a bad experience. I could make specific recommendations, but would not hesitate to try anything on the menu. This is one of those restaurants that is worth the drive, regardless of where you are at when you feel like eating pizza tonight.
(5)Brenda B.
Had deep dish Chicago pizza with cheese and Italian sausage. Ordering ahead of time saved for a long wait. Takes 45 minutes to cook. Pretty comparable to Giordano's in Chicago. Crust wasn't as buttery tasting but still good. Plenty of toppings. Decent price. Had a large and husband and I had a whole other half for lunch the next day. Would definitely eat here again. Great find!
(5)Cristina A.
We love deep dish pizza from Chicago and deeply missed it until we found this place. It is always outstanding here would highly recommend it
(4)Victor J.
Coming from a person who loves pizza.... THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!!!! Menu says allow 45 minutes for deep dish but my large took about 30. I ordered a large with extra cheese, mushroom & pepperoni. Fed 3 hungry guys w/ no problem at all. Definitely knife & fork. Not one thing can I say bad. Awesome service, friendly staff and hands down ... Best pizza I have ever eaten!!! And I was only a NY STYLE thin crust guy. Let me tell you... I have seen the light!!! Not a huge review guy, but I believe I had to let this be known. I would drive an hour to get here. Just north of the Galleria mall in Hoover , Al. Please hit this place soon!!!!!
(5)Desiree R.
Some of the best deep dish pizza I have had outside of Chicago!! The staff is super friendly, and makes your dinning experience that much better. Love the WrigleyVille pizza; the spinach salad is fresh (try the home made balsamic based Italian dressing), garlic bread is also good.
(5)Alex P.
Got the pizza to go and it was phenomenal. One of the best i've ever had.
(5)Tom C.
Every time I eat pizza now that is not from Tortugas I think about the place. It is in a league all it's own call ahead 45 minutes for the deep dish if you do not want to wait. The regular crust is very good too but the deep dish is just insanely good. The owners are jive too. Our young kids love the fact that they give you real dough to play with while you wait. Seriously. If you live in Leeds or Hueytown or Ttuscaloosa you need to drive over to get some if this pizza. I like to add garlic to the meat lovers.
(5)Joe V.
It's officially a trend, you call ahead for the deep dish, this time I called an hour ahead of time and when we sat down we still waited 15 mins for the pizza. Pizza is still great, next time I was call ahead and ask "What time should I come in to get my pizza served right away?" I'll report back and see what happens.
(3)David B.
Love this place. I got a deep dish & thin crust. The crust on the deep dish was not buttery like most Chicago pies, but I like it that way. It is definitely in the same league as my other two favorites ... Giordano's and Edwardo's Natural pizza. I didn't have much of the thin crust, but I did taste the cheese and it was perfect. On top of the great pizza, the staff was very friendly - in a genuine and humble way. I was pleasantly surprised at that. I will definitely pay this place another visit next time I am in the area.
(5)Michael P.
One of my few 5 star reviews. I make the trek out here several times a year just for the deep dish pizza. Pizza by the slice is available for lunch, and everyone I have brought here loves it. the sauce has the right level of spice, not too sweet. Ingredients are fresh and tasty. Italian dressing is great on their salad. Definitely one of the best pizza places in Alabama.
(5)Bryan M.
Had the lunch special: started off with a house salad with the homade Italian dressing and then a slice of deep dish spinach and mushroom on whole wheat crust. YUM!
(4)Paige I.
A hidden, but very popular gem in Hoover! The deep dish pizza is amazing, which is good because you'll have enough leftovers for your next 2 meals. Weekends are crazy busy but once you get there go ahead and place your order at the bar. They cook the pizza half way so when you (finally!) get seated they just have to finish it up and you don't have to wait long!
(4)Kaye T.
The best pizza and even better service!!! They give the kids dough to play with while you wait on the pizza. Super good and not to miss!!!
(5)Schuyler R.
I'm a pizza fanatic and for me Tortugas is easily the best pizza in Birmingham. They are known for their Chicago Deep Dish but my go to is the thin crust Carne or Traditional (with pepperoni instead of sausage). Both of these are amazing and they will do half and half if requested. Keep in mind the pizzas take 30 minutes or so to bake. I will generally phone my order in before I make the 15-20 minute drive over, just be sure to let them know you will be dining in but are placing your order ahead of time. Shortly after you're seated you'll get complimentary bread sticks and red sauce. If you have kiddos, they'll bring out some raw dough to play with until your order arrives. They have a decent selection of both domestic and import/local bottled beers to wash your pizza down with. The price and wait time are well worth the reward of an excellent pizza pie. Already looking forward to my next visit.

My wife and I were passing through and found out the place we found late at night for pizza the last time we came this way is closed. She found Tortugas and we stopped in. We ordered the thin crust pizza and both loved it. It had plenty of toppings, yet the crust was plenty crispy while not being overly thin. We started with a large spinach salad, which was plenty big for us to split. While I thought the price was a little high, my wife said it was worth it. The service was excellent.

I have to go back again to see if I can improve their score. Ordered Hawaiian deep dish pizza. GREAT! BUT the middle part was runny, too liquidy, and lukewarm. Once I got to the crust area, the contents were piping hot. I'm hoping they just took it out of the oven too soon. Otherwise, dang, they aint jokin when they say 30-45 minutes to prepare, but provided it comes out hot, yeah, its pretty bomb ass chicago style pizza. Slightly pricey. I think it was $26 for a 10 inch deep dish with a soda. Feeds 2 pretty easy. Might feed 3 if you aren't gluttons. I'll have to go back and try again.
(3)Tony W.
Had a carne special. It is all meat. It was very good, had a lot of toppings on it. The small is enough for two people because it was packed with toppings! Bacon, sausage, pepperoni, and I dont know what all! Taste was exceptional! Just the right spices. Only negative I have is the way they cut it. Cut was in squares instead of traditional pizza cut. It made for some small end pieces that were good for nothing, and some in the middle with no crust to hold onto. But overall I give it a thumbs up!
(4)Tim W.
Chigaco pizza in Bham!
(5)Garrett I.
I am all about the deep dish! If you dine in you get a free order of garlic bread with dipping sauce. I call ahead with my order if I am getting the deep dish because it takes about 45 minutes even on a slow night. I love the fact that the owners migrated here from Chicago and claim to do the classic Chicago deep dish just as it should be done because they know from experience! I have had deep dish in Chicago and I will say that this indeed is the real deal. I have nothing but good things to say about this place because Tortugas continues to impress me!
(5)James B.
Love the ambiance of this place despite not being a Chicago Cubs fan. Cannot get really good pizza like this in the Alabaster area unless one is a fan of Uncle Bucks which I am not. The crust of our thin crust was perfect. The toppings were just right...not overpowering and not skimpy. The service was terrific.
(5)G. B.
Great pizza...every time. We love the carne special and vegetarian. Whole wheat crust is excellent. Good selection of beers, served ice cold. Owners and staff are always very friendly and make you feel right at home!

Tortugas pizza 2801 John Hawkins Pkwy, Hoover, AL 35244 Popped in to try tortugas pizza on hwy 150 tonight and was highly impressed with the service. The counter guy was extremely courteous and helpful as well as being very friendly without being over powering. A frosted mug came with each round of beer and complimentary garlic bread with marinara was delish. I ordered a extra crispy thin crust carne with jalapeños and it was just right! As I sat and watched some folks waddle out I realized the Chicago style pie they serve here must be very popular. I also learned they will be opening a new store near railroad park in downtown Birmingham. Obviously they've been doing their homework. Good job Tortugas! I'll definitely be back. I've tried this place 4 times and they never disappoint. Mom and pop place so you know they're working hard to make your dollar worthwhile. We always go for the Chicago style, traditional. Super yum. It can take up to 45 min for the pie so we always call in the order before dining in. Staff is very friendly. If you have little ones ask for some dough to keep them preoccupied before chow time. They also have a nice selection of local beers!
(5)Miranda S.
We love this place! Been to Chicago an had deep dish pizza! An this pizza sure is right up there with it!!!! We had bacon an pepperoni. Loved it! Got cheese sticks while we waited. They were good also. It takes a little bit to get your pizza. Totally understandable. Defiantly worth the wait. Love the decor of their place. Defiantly has a Chicago feel!
(5)Jon S.
True Chicago stuffed pizza. A true gem of a cafe 700 miles south of anything close. Carne special is my go to. One slice is all an average man can eat. So it's quite economical too. They have thin crust too. I highly recommend the Lasagna as well. Great service! Family owned and operated. So check the hours before you go.
(4)Ashley M.
The pizza was good but not worth going back for. But I do live 45 minutes away.
(3)Jesus F.
Read excellent reviews and decided to give it a try. Since I was by myself, didn't order a pizza. But had an antipasto salad and lasagna. The antipasto was disappointing, a big heaping serving of lettuce with some cheese, but the meat was non existing, four slices of thin salami. Lots of dressing, black olives, a couple of banana peppers and tomatoes. Not very impressing. The lasagna was worse, bland, missing flavor, just four pieces poorly arranged with some small pieces of garlic bread. When it comes to lasagna it's as boring as it gets. Maybe I should have tried the pizza instead, but hesitant to go back.

We were visiting from Georgia but I am a Chicago native and lived in New York for 10 years, so I'm a pizza snob. There are many claims to Chicago style pizza and none have ever come close. This is the closest. I don't like deep dish but the traditional style pizza had the look and cut of Chicago pizza with square cuts that they don't do anywhere else. The taste was similiar but lacked some of the strong spices that gives Chicago pizza it's unique taste. The crust on ours was not good and really held back a 5 star review The inside is very cool. It is Chicago everywhere. They have Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Irish, and unfortunately Sox memorabilia throughout and really creates a great atmosphere. Thanks for bringing a taste of Chicago to the south.
(4)Paul C.
Tortugas serves authentic, Chicago style stuffed pizza. This is the real deal! Fresh ingredients, rich cheese, and hand rolled dough. The signature pizza is the "Traditional", and it includes Italian sausages, green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and garlic. It is excellent, and I recommend this. Other options include building your own pie from a wide variety of ingredients or choosing one of the pre-defined suggestions. They include Carne Special, Vegetarian, Pizza Mexicana, and Hawaiian. Tortugas will also prepare thin crust pizzas, and these are good. The restaurant is family run and the owners are very friendly. The stuffed pizza takes approximately 45 minutes to prepare. The wait is worth it. They also offer a lunch special that includes a single slice from pizza that is prepared in advance. This is wonderful, and the servings are very generous. This is the best pizza in town.
(5)Jenn H.
Definitely the best pizza in Birmingham. My brother is a food snob and he was thoroughly impressed. Friendly staff, great experience. Highly recommend you visit!
(5)Curtis S.
Let me get through the cons first. It was a hot summer afternoon and it was uncomfortably warm in there. The toppings were sparse in the pizza. We ordered garlic cheese bread and it was tasteless slices of bread. I would suggest changing to garlic knots. That being said, I will definitely be back. The beer is in bottles, but the mugs come frozen and Man, that was good. I knew that it would take up to 45 minutes when you ordered Chicago style pizza so I called my order in ahead. The staff is very friendly. We got a large Chicago deep dish with pepperoni and ground beef and it was awesome. Like I said, the topping were not enough for my liking, but it tasted great. Three of us ate until full and had two large pieces to take home. It is on the pricey side. Pizza, two beers and three waters came to $35. If they would add more toppings and change the crappy garlic bread, this would be my favorite pizza place ever.
(4)Brian C.
Certainly worth the 45 minutes it takes to get a pie. The produce makes the pizza a bit watery for my tastes but it's still the bomb. Service is okay but not great. Regulars seem to get attention while less frequent visitors sit there with empty glasses.
(4)Steve U.
My fellow Yelpers have said it better than I can... This is SUPERB Chicago-style deep dish pizza. And they have a wealth of Chicago sports memorabillia eveywhere inside the restaurant. Definitely worth an eat-in if you have the time. We also quite enjoyed the appetizer of garlic bread, italian sub and thin crust pizza as well. Check this place out if you want GREAT pizza!
(5)Valencia W.
I love Chicago style pizza and I saw this place on the travel channel and had to go. This is the only place in this region that has authentic deep dish Chicago pizza done right. It was a drive to get there, but worth it.
(5)Shannon M.
Great pizza and service as always ! Been many times and never disappointed .
(5)Jonny C.
Now who said you have to fly to Chicago to get a deep dish? Tortugas save you from all that trouble and oh do they do it right. The pizza is delicious from thin to deep. So everyone's a winner here. It's nice and saucy so make sure you grab your fork and knife.
(5)Jason L.
One of our favorite places - we call ahead to get our order in. Love the stuffed and thin crust pizzas.
(5)Kristen W.
Awesome pie, awesome service! Pizza snobs from Chicago giving this place thumbs up!!! Beer was cold, ambiance was casual, great for kiddos! No wait.
(5)Cheryl M.
This place is not very big so I imagine that there is normally a wait on a weekend but we got lucky. We debated about ordering the Chicago style pizza but went ahead anyway. We were told the pizza would take 45 minutes. We ordered the Hawaiian. It actually only took about half an hour. To be honest, I was worried I wasn't going to like it but it was fantastic. It was just two of us and I think we each had 1 1/2 pieces. This pizza is filling! I was also worried that the leftovers would not heat well but they heated up great! Delicious!
