Simple, fast, and affordable but a bit meh in flavor. Really could benefit from a more authentic level of seasoning at least with the chicken. This is more of a Chinese/Japanese hybrid rather than hibachi. Healthy and fresh stir fry would be a good description No sushi but I suspect that helps the simplicity of the menu. The sweet tea is yummy. The restaurant itself is very clean and nicely decorated and quiet. Attentive staff. Good value. And surprisingly light.

For the record this is not Japanese food, I'd say it's more inline with Chinese stir-fry cooking. Another hint is that they serve long grain rice; short grain rice is served in Japanese cuisine - big difference. Also eggs rolls is not Japanese. A more appropriate name for this place is Shonos Asian Grill. Large quantity, decent price, ok quality but nothing to rave about.

We had takeout. The staff was friendly and we got our food quickly. The eat in area is small, but looked decent for a quick meal. Prices were pretty good. The food was freshly cooked and decent quality. But seemed to lack taste. Definitely had to add plenty of sauce to the meal. The fried rice was good but needed a lot more soy sauce.

If you are looking for stellar Japanese fare, you are better off looking elsewhere. But, frankly, if that's what you're seeking, you are better off looking "not in Birmingham." That said, this review is basically neutral. I don't have anything to say that will stop me from going back, but I didn't leave raving about it either. I stopped in for lunch after a former colleague had spoken highly of Shonos. It's close to home and work, so I wasn't out much to give it a shot. Imagine a hibachi restaurant where the entire restaurant is served by a single grill along one side of the restaurant and largely hidden from view. Think hibachi dinner without the show. Perfect for a quick office lunch. They also had a 99 Health Dept rating when I visited. As far as the food goes, it was a little bit hit and a little bit miss. The miso and the ginger salad were a great start. I considered the gyoza or egg roll, but those will have to come another day. The shrimp dinner had good sized portions. The shrimp were edible, the vegetables were actually pretty good, but the fried rice was very bland. Total price for their shrimp dinner, adding miso was under $12 (plus a tip). Which really is hard to beat. I'll go back for the price and convenience. I just wish the rice had a little more flavor.

The entrees are an excellent value. Both the chicken and beef are tender and also have a great flavor. They come with fried rice, veggies, and a salad. Although it's not quite Mt Fuji, it's about half the price. So it's a great spot for good Hibachi without the nearly $20 per person price tag.

The ginger salad is good, the teriyaki chicken is great but the scallops have no flavor. I would not order them again and scallops were my purpose in choosing Japanese. The prices are great. Service is good. I would rather get take out from here. Just don't order the scallops

Nice servers, friendly atmosphere but more like a diner than Japanese restaurant. More importantly, the food is very disappointing. Poor quality, huge quantity...I'm guessing the giant portions and everything drenched in mayo sauce for cheap is the reason for all the great reviews. That and the fact that, let's face it, B'ham isn't exactly a foodie city.

From all of the rave reviews I expected this place to blow my socks off. I was extremely disappointed. We ordered the dumplings, the combo of 3 with steak, chicken, and scallops with fried rice. The meat was actually cooked very well but the rice was not good. It tasted like they took brown rice and threw in a few pieces of chopped carrots. The main problem was that the rice was just cheap long rice and not a quality washed Japanese style rice. To me, if a Japanese restaurant can't get rice right, then it's not a Japanese restaurant. The service was very good.

Service is always great. Small & clean. Gets busy during lunch on week days but not so busy on weekends. They are best known for their "Eddie's Special" which comes with their delicious shrimp sauce. Great little place to grab some delicious lunch!

I think I found my new favorite Japanese restaurant. The food is good, not fattening in taste. The service was great and attentive the whole time, as well as swift in bringing food and drinks all the while smiling. You just can't find good service like that anymore. If you want good quick food and good service, I recommend Shonos!

One if my favorite places. Food is always fresh and comes up quick. Staff is also friendly. Perfect place for a quick, healthy meal!

My wife and I love Shono's. The Eddy special is her favorite. Mine is steak and scallops. The atmosphere is nice, friendly and quiet. You won't get the shtick with juggling spatulas, throwing shrimp or onion volcanoes, but you will get excellent food with large portions and staff that's friendly and attentive. It's a win/win.

I've been here 4-5 times. Food tastes good. Price? Little high for what it is. Service is ok and ambience is 3 out of 5. I only go there because others want to and I just tag along.

My boyfriend and I were out at Planet Fitness and were starving postb workout. We walked down to Shonos. The place was very clean and only 2 workers (looks like husband and wife). He cooked and she waited. I had the rib eye entree with veggies and brown rice. Talk about awesome! I really love that they had all fresh ingredients, and their menu was not complicated. I would definitely eat here again because it was fantastic! Oh yeah, they don't serve sushi but I don't blame them...I like their simplicity! You should try it out! You will not regret it!

if you like little flies buzzing around you when you eat, you will like this place. i had chicken & shrimp... way more shrimp than chicken and it was just that with teriyaki sauce and veggies... meh.

Wanted to get away from the mall and found this on Yelp. Sign outside building said "best southern sweet tea around". It's good. As long as you like your sweet tea SWEET!!! We tried The Chicken Teriyaki bowls and Fast Eddie dinner (chicken and spicy steak) with fried rice. Both were very good and even better with the "white sauce" that was on the table (horseradish bases sauce). Compared very favorably with Otanis which we normally eat at. However this was much less expensive and a very good deal. It is buried in a shopping plaza so it's unlikely you will stumble across it unless you are specifically looking for it. The staff was very attentive and polite. Anytime we are in the area we will certainly visit again.

Favorite restaurant. Really good, clean place. Price is well worth quality and quantity.

We discovered this little Japanese restaurant for lunch today. It is located in the Hoover Commons shopping center, and our waiter informed us they just opened in July. The restaurant layout is long and narrow. Tables are along the right wall all the way to the back of the restaurant. The cooking area and kitchen are along the left side. The chef's grill is placed in the open and diners can be seated along a bar facing it. The decor is simple, and gives the restaurant a crisp Japanese feel. The menu is limited, but offers selections of chicken, seafood, and steak. The wife ordered the Shrimp entree and I ordered the Eddie Special (steak and chicken). I also ordered a bowl of Miso soup. I thought the soup was very good. Each entree was preceded with an iceberg lettuce salad with ginger dressing. The entrees are served on a plate with rice (fried or white), and fresh vegetables. The meat is cooked in a lite teriyaki-like sauce that I found very tasty. We enjoyed our experience very much and would recommend dining here. I hope the restaurant will succeed because it offers a unique Japanese dining option. Quality "chop 'em up" food without the wait, show, and expense. It was very busy at lunch time and there were only three workers. They will need to hire more help to provide prompt service.

Shonos is very good for Japanese and the prices are very reasonable. My favorite items are the Eddie Special and the Shrimp Teriyaki Bowl. The shrimp could be a little bigger, but it is a great deal for $6. Overall it is agreatplace to go if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg for dinner.

So this is in a little hole in the wall strip mall near the Galleria. It's not uber authentic Japanese, but damn is it good...for the money. Very inexpensive, really friendly staff and super delish!

Fresh and tasty. I usually go in here for lunch to-go... I like the Teriaki chicken bowl with fried rice... Costs a bit over $6, is a whole 3-dish to-go plate full of fresh-and-tasty food and typically takes 10 mins from order time until time for you to walk out the door! Staff is always friendly and are more than happy to make suggestions if you are scratching your head on what will be best. I recommend if you are in the area.

The staff was great, kind and helpful. I was seated right away and when I told the waitress that I was chilly (near the door) she immediately moved me to another place near the rear of the room which was more comfortable. While not expensive, the menu (lunch) is small and I was hoping to find more variety. I ate the the shrimp with steamed rice and some vegetables. It was good but not great and cost $7.95. I would return since this was my only visit and its close to work.
