Maybe Taipei isn't the best sushi in the city. Or top 5. Maybe it is danky and has incredibly stressful faux brick glued to the inside walls, but only in random places. Maybe there are weird pillars randomly placed, and the booth seats are too far apart, and there are weird statuettes gazing down upon you like the piercing, judgmental eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg, ever looming over you. The staff is unendingly pleasant. And honestly, the sushi isn't as bad as the thai and japanese food that people have reviewed here. The spicy tuna roll is mostly flavorless. And the Fuji Roll is disturbingly odd. It is supposedly topped with lobster - but it is more reminiscent of some mutant sushi hushpuppy with shrimp in it. Other than those two, every roll I've had has been good, and for the price - it's tough to beat. Lunch specials that offer two 8-piece rolls for $7 mean it's a rare jewel - somewhere to gorge on sushi to the point of explosion without leaving you unable to pay your mortgage. Giggidy.

Amazing place too eat. Everything is affordable amd worth the drive for me. I wish I lived in the area or else id go all the time. The people who own it and extremely nice. They have an amazing chef. He makes all the dishes himself. And they look amazing too. There sushi rolls are fantastic and the pad thai noodles are delicious. I couldnt ask for a better place to eat after or around lunch. I wish more people knew about this place. But like I said the prices are affordable and they also have a wide selection of various alcoholic beverages. Great place to check out if you're in the area.

I was shocked with this restaurant. I'm all about appearances when it comes to restaurants and Taipei half way met my standards. I say this because they displayed their specials on colored poster boards outside in plain handwriting. Also, it was dark but clean. I couldn't find their health rating but the food was great. However, I had shrimp stir fry with udon noodles. My noodles were transparent white (did not look the part) but surprisingly tasty. Everything was seasoned well and the service was great. My boyfriend and I were the only people in there which made it kind of weird. I don't think they get a lot of business but the food is good, and the price point is even better for the amount given. I would return and suggest it to others. Oh yeah, there was a sign stating new mgmt so hopefully things will turn around bc it's really good quality food but the aesthetics of their decor doesn't do it for me! Worth the try!

I have only used this establishment for delivery. I have eaten the food about 12 times and it is good each time. I have been disappointed in the thai dishes and have thus stuck to sushi. The Thai is a bit dull and needs more flavor. The sushi is fresh, well made, and plentiful. It is great to have a delivery sushi option and even better when it is of the quality that I would expect when dining in a restaurant. My favorite is the rainbow soft shell crab roll.

This place is a hidden gem, point blank. For the price, you really cannot really compare... other comparable sushi and entrees at a Japanese restaurant are much more pricy. My husband and I live close to this restaurant. We wanted to try it and we were calling in late (Thursday at 9pm -- they close at 10) and we ordered the teriyaki chicken entree (that came with rice and Veg), volcano roll, california roll and spicy scallop roll. Oh, and a side Miso soup also. :) The only thing i can say is that we didn't really like the spicy scallop. There was no "crunchy" factor, so it's kinda like a spicy tuna roll. The volcano roll was awesome; and the rest was also really good. well worth the call-in order. We were delighted. The total cost of our meal 27.00; but we left a nice tip since it was the end of the night. Glad we did! and we'll be back!

Great place! Family owned and operated. Only ever seen a male and female working there, both of whom are very very friendly. The inside and outside are a little dated/depressing but it definitely doesn't reflect the food. The prices are great, especially for the appetizers and soups. I recommend the red and green curries with tofu or chicken. The chicken and steak teriyakis were not very good. The meat was just very cheap and way too burned but other than those dishes everything is SO GOOD. I personally love to help out new, family businesses so that's why I will always prefer this place over the red pearl/bowl or Okinawa. The food feels a lot more personal and really feels like its made by someone who cares. Definitely a must try for everyone!

I'm in town for work so got takeout from this place tonight. I'm half Taiwanese so trust me I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised! Nope. Place had no one in it, and the interior was falling apart. Despite the looks of the place, I was hoping the food was good. However, when I dug into my dinner, the salmon roll was so minuscule/tiny and the sashimi deluxe was made of raw fish pieces I had never seen before! I literally threw out a third of it. I live in NYC and have been to so many sushi/Japanese places over the 10 years I have lived there so I know what good sushi and sashimi looks like and this wasn't it. Cherry on the top -- the guy in charge REFUSED to give me low sodium soy sauce unless I paid 50 cents extra. His rationale was that their prices are so low compared to other places that they have to make people pay for low sodium soy sauce. What a joke. I won't be back.

A fun and eccentric little environment, with some strong, great Thia ice tea. Had the Mango Pradise Roll and it was pretty good!! The service was very kind and made sure we had everything that we needed. Will most likely come back here soon

This is, as of now, the best bang for buck asian food and sushi. I assume the prices are attractive at the moment to stir up business, but my wife and I were Not disappointed. Noodle soups are pretty good, appetizers are well priced so you can try a few without feeling guilty, and the sushi is better than you would expect for the price you pay. It is unfortunate that so few people give this place a chance, but i will be dropping by this place at least once a week. Check it out.

Was recommended by a friend. Food was very good. I had sushi and a spring roll. Building is old, but clean. Service was great. Staff was very friendly. I'll probably eat here again the next time I'm in Birmingham

Reasonable priced and good food. I have only had a couple menu items (kung pao chicken and chicken marsala) but enjoyed both. Go to chinese take out place for me in Homewood.

Finally found a decent Asian restaurant to eat at after 10 on a Friday or Saturday night. I had the Thai coconut soup and it was amazing; I can't believe I waited this long to try this soup. The sushi was pretty good. I had a tempura roll which was real good along with the sauce. The other roll I had was made too thick and fell apart too easily; the taste was good otherwise.

This place is a hidden gem. My fiancé and I went last night and ordered a lot of food along with sake and only paid $41 and an $9 tip. We ordered the pan fried gyoza which came with ponzu sauce and it was mouth watering delicious! So crispy and full of flavor. Then our ginger salad and miso soup came. I ended up finishing my soup and the rest of my fiancé's it was so warm and refreshing. Then the order of tamago I ordered came out. I fell in love with the sweetness of the egg combined with the sticky rice. Yum! Then our entrees came out. I ordered unagi don and my fiancé ordered the sushi deluxe which came with octopus, sweet shrimp, soft shell crab, unagi, yellowtail, white tuna, red tuna, salmon, and a roll of spicy tuna. My unagi was cooked to perfection and it was more than enough food to make me full, I couldn't even finish all my rice. My fiancé's sushi was the best he's ever had. I tried some of the octopus and salmon and it was fantastic. Beautiful cuts of fish that just melt in your mouth. Service was fantastic. Our waiter, which I believe he is the owner, was so sweet and would tell us thank you every time he came over and as we was leaving he waved so excitingly at us and said "see you soon!!" We left him and pretty fair tip and we will be coming back! Prices are extremely low here: Gyoza: $3.75 Tamago (3 pieces) $3.25 Sake $9 Unagi don: $9.75 Sushi deluxe: $11.75 Please don't shoot this place down and give it a shot!

I'm not sure what happened to this place. I had been once before, about three or four years ago, and I really enjoyed it then. We went today because we were craving sushi, and Taipei 101 was nearby; however, I was pretty shocked at the degree to which this place had fallen apart over the years. We went at 12 noon on a Friday, and there were only two or three cars in the parking lot -- not a good sign. We weren't even sure it was open until we caught a glimpse of the illuminated Open sign. And speaking of the parking lot, the first thing that we noticed is that it was unkempt and in need of resurfacing. The exterior of the restaurant did not look inviting at all. This alone is not enough to deter me from a place, but the inside was just as bad. Dark. Deserted. Empty fish tank in the middle of the dining room. We could hear people talking in the back, but we didn't see any customers. We stood there for a good five minutes without anyone acknowledging us, and then we left. Since we didn't actually eat there, you can certainly take my review with a grain of salt, but we won't be going back unless there is some substantial renovation. Is Restaurant: Impossible still on? If so, I think I've found a good candidate for it.

Sorry, but there will be no second chance for this one. At my suggestion, my sister and I went this past Saturday (early) evening, and I was completely disappointed. I wanted to wash my hands so the ladies room was my first stop. There was an unpleasant smell, which made me want to leave as quickly as possible. Only one of four stalls were functional and there was no toilet paper...some table napkins had been placed on top of the empty holder. Arriving at our table, I found it sticky feeling, even though I saw nothing actually on it. The menu had quite a variety of dishes, most offering a choice of adding chicken or beef or shrimp, which, of course, raised the price; not unexpected nor an issue. We chose the two dishes we wanted, only to be told those were not available because they did not have the noodles associated with those dishes. We were asked to choose between two (of six) dishes that they actually had available, in that section. That's bad, especially since they (in my opinion) should have made us aware that certain dishes were unavailable BEFORE we chose them. I ordered Pad Thai, which I've had numerous times at several different restaurants; it was not a good Pad Thai. First, it was very saucy, which it usually isn't. Second, it had almost a ketchupy taste (which my sister also commented on). Third, the "vegetables" that we're supposed to be in it were so tiny and scarce that they were basically non-existent. And Fourth, I chose to order it with chicken and pay a higher price, but there was not very much meat at all in the dish. I mean, probably not even a half of a breast...a small breast, at that. My sister ordered the Lo Mein with chicken. It wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't like any Lo Mein I had had. It had a very distinctive curry powder taste, and, like mine, virtually no meat or vegetables. We ordered no beverages nor anything else with the meal, and it was over $17.00. That's just ridiculous for (basically) two plates of noodles. And, I thought it was supposed to come with either soup or salad, which we didn't get; however, my sister said that she wasn't sure about that, and this discussion came up after we had already left. We had a Groupon for $20.00, and I don't know if that had any bearing on our dishes being so "naked", but either way, I won't be going back to find out. We were both very disappointed.

The place is kinda run down and dank, but the food and the service were really good. Our waitress kept bowing to us which was a funny little quirk she had which made us laugh a lot. The food was delicious, but I kinda wished they put more eat in my meal. It is an average place with decent food.

The food is amazing . The outside looks like it's abandoned , but me and a lot of my friends come very often for sushi . There are usually only two people working so it's a little slow , but the food is amazing ! 2 thumbs up .

Fantastic hidden gem in the Homewood area. The outside looks rundown and I was skeptical to go in at first as well. Boy am I glad I went in! This is one of the best spicy tuna rolls I have ever had in my life! The thai coconut soup is to die for as well. Give this place a chance and you will not be disappointed. Sometimes you have to wait a minute for a server to greet you as they don't have many people working there, trust me its worth the wait. Extremely friendly staff and delicious sushi for a great price. will be returning

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Taipei is definitely on the cheap side. I guess maybe I should have gone with Tom A's green curry suggestion. Instead we got chicken teriyaki bento box, tofu stir fry, spring rolls and green tea mochi. The miso soup that came with the meal was definitely pretty yucky. The spring rolls were ok, and it came with a ketchup type sauce. The chicken that came with the bento box was completely overcooked and dry as a bone. The charred flavor was nice though. The sushi that came with the box was rubbery and unswallowable. The Mr said that his stir fry was alright, but that Surin was better. The green tea mochi was the best part of the meal. Mmmm, mochi mochi. Probably would not come back. I'd pay the extra price for my meal and go to Surin or somewhere comparable.
