I tried this place after reading about it on some list of best restaurants in Birmingham...I haven't had a lot of great food in Birmingham, so perhaps this is one of the best... It is in a nice location in Homewood. There is ample parking in the nearby parking garage (free) with a very short walk. I went in around 8:30 PM on a weeknight and I was seated promptly and greeted quickly by my server. It has a nice pub feel, kind of dark inside and quite loud. I started with the white bean chicken soup - it was average, the bowl was $6.00 and quite small. I had beef stroganoff for my meal ($15.00). The portion was large, served with a side of bread and a side salad. I find beef stroganoff is hit or miss and I can't decide if this was a hit or a miss...I guess somewhere in between. The (beef) steak was a bit tough and was cut into large strips (there wasn't a lot of beef). Generous portion of noodles with a sauce that was bit too thin in viscosity and a bit too sour in taste. It isn't to say that this wasn't a good dish, but it just didn't fit my palate. Total tab with a soda = $25...a little steep in my opinion. The menu had a good variety of dishes, sandwiches and pizzas so I might consider a return in the future with a different entree selection...but the value for money spent would definitely make me think twice.

I tried Jackson's again for the first time in a few years. The cookie dough egg rolls, as before, were great! However I found the salmon and mashed potatoes way too salty. So much so that I had to have multiple glasses of water just to eat it. The service was good and the atmosphere pleasant enough. The prices were fair but the wine selection was poor. Overall it was an okay experience.

Recently moved in the area and went to Jackson's for a repeat visit recently with my girlfriend and sister. The wait service was incredible, but our menu selections weren't up to par. While the Pimento Burger we ordered looked well-thought-out and cooked to order, the Fish Taco (Tuna) and Panini that we ordered were bot rather plain. My impression was that these small plates were considered more "menu fillers" and were prescribed by the kitchen an amount of detail relevant to such a descriptor. Previous experience shows that it's a great place for drinks and dessert, or to stick to the featured menu items.

They really need to fix their a/c. I went for happy hour and sat at the bar. After only a few minutes, I began sweating and my legs were sticking to the seat. I was told their a/c doesn't cool like it should and they don't want to spend the money to fix it. I'm afraid that's really going to hurt their service in the summer. Otherwise, I love the atmosphere, especially the patio when it's not too hot, and they have good food. Just fix your a/c please!!!

Not the best place in town. Overpriced and I have yet to get a burger cooked to my asking. Great location and outside seating, but not worth it.

Sometimes all you can say is "bless their hearts". I like Jackson's, I really do. It's close to the house and the food is good but lord, they shoot themselves in the foot so often that the servers all need crutches. Last night they were busy so I cut a lot of slack when staff is slammed. My side salad came out and we had no silverware. So we wait, and wait, and wait. About that time a collision occurs behind me and plates leaving the kitchen are dropped to the floor right behind my chair. After a period of discussion, the staff finally decides that someone should keep running food while others concentrate on cleaning the huge mess. Nobody asked if anything had gotten on me or apologized for the people crawling at my feet. After several more minutes my wife asked for silverware so I can eat the salad. Our server who was assigned to cleanup duty snaps back "YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT!" About that time a manager shows up with the nastiest smelling mop ever to clean the floor. She mops, mops and mops some more and I honestly could have tossed cookies. Then the server shows back up asking us why the hostess hadn't given us silverware. Not having an answer, she says she will be back with some for us. Hey, look! The manager with the stinky mop is back and mopping more! At least ten minutes between salad arriving and getting utensils. Entrees are run by someone other than our server and all is well except my wife's salad came without salad dressing. The dude is gone before we realize their error. Our server (who had snapped at us about silverware) is at the next table. Should we ask? Seriously the girl had just gotten testy about silverware so how will she react to the news she has to make a special run to the kitchen 12 feet away? Luckily we are spared making that decision because she slips and spills a pitcher of ice tea over myself and our son. Most of it clearly went towards the other table so nobody apologizes to our table or offers to get us a towel to dry ourselves or the table. (In case you were wondering, wasabi Caesar salad dressing mixed with tea really isn't too bad. But at least I finally have silverware for my side salad and entree so why complain? Oh, yeah... My wife has no salad dressing. So she sits, we drip dry and eat while she looks for someone to get salad dressing. My son and I are over half way through our meal and still nobody has stopped in on us. Alas, the manager is now back with a squeegee to work on messes #1 and #2 and my wife interrupts her efforts to inquire on the ability to get salad dressing. Nearly 15 minutes in to having entrees, the table is finally complete. Good food, reasonable prices and a incredible floor show for those with quick drying clothes and a good sense of humor. Foibles like this are unfortunately really common at Jackson's. Food is always on point but FOH needs some work. There are a few really good servers but most are sub average at best.

My experience is based on our waiter Rob!! He was delightful. Very knowledgeable on all menu items and prob the best server ive had at a restaurant. The food was tasty but seriously Rob made the experience!! Will be back. Highly recommended... Ask for Rob!

Much better option than the restaurant in my hotel (at the nearby Aloft)- casual restaurant with a large menu. I've enjoyed the quesadillas, and the flatbread options, both of which were large portions for a hearty meal and good value. I also liked the Moscow Mule, prepared deftly by the bartender (points for being a Patriots fan- go New England!). Most recently, I was able to hang out at the bar with only the bartender to cheer with for the Patriots, while the rest of the bar rooted for New York. In past visits, the outdoor seating is great to enjoy the good weather.

First time to go. Went for brunch. Good selection of items. Three of us. We had an omelet, corn beef hash, and Monte Christo. All were good but the Monte Cristo was the bomb. The cheese grits and French Onion hash browns were good sides. We will definitely go again and recommend you give it a try.

Came here for Sunday brunch in a group of four - two couples. The first couple--being me and my dude--arrived early and we were seated after a strange, uncertain wait, like for a minute the hostesses waffled over which tables where actually available. We were seated at a very small table for four people, even though slightly larger tables were available, so we spent a lot of the meal rearranging our drinks and plates and flatware. Pretty much everything was going fine until the food came. The waitress was attentive, though she seemed almost nervous, maybe she was new? Anyway, when they brought our food out, they brought out one side of grits first, which I took. Then they brought another side of grits, which the other lady with us took. Then they brought two complete orders that went to the guys, leaving the ladies to pick at our grits. Then they brought out the third entree, which went to the other girl, and maybe five full minutes passed before my entree came. I also noticed that with each installment of the meal, a different person was delivering it, as if they were just grabbing what they could on their way past the kitchen. I ordered the breakfast sliders with Conecuh and a side of the cheese grits (I've had McEwen & Sons at Iron City so I at least knew what I was getting into - if I hadn't ordered this I would have ordered the Grand Omelette). This portion was very generous and I was satisfied by the end of the meal. And it was good - if not a little tepid. Everyone else seemed satisfied with their portions. Except my dude, who got the brunch pizza. He described the portion as "woefully inadequate." And it really was - a very sparse slab of flat bread with bare-minimum toppings (which I guess makes sense since it bears the Fuego brand on the menu, a place whose menu seems to take "woefully inadequate" to an art form with their food). So he ordered a plate of fries that was maybe $5. Now, five bucks? You expect steak fries, waffle fries, maybe crinkle fries. These are the thin, crispy, almost flavorless kind of fries. Not really worth it! He also ordered sangria and it tasted like cheap and watered down wine on ice. Again, not worth the $7 or $8. Our total bill ended up being a lot higher than we expected. And I don't mean, "How did we spend this much money?" Because we did order a couple drinks and I know at $7-$8 that racks up your tab real fast. I mean when we saw the final number on this experience, we felt kind of jipped, like we were paying for a quality experience that we didn't receive. This place seemed inconsistent and a little disorganized. Maybe next time we'll just hit up Jack's across the street.

I was finally able to get to Jackson's for brunch on a Sunday. They have a huge brunch menu with several different omelets, eggs, bacon, sausage, and a French Toast dish that is fried tempura style that is excellent. Of course all the much needed brunch spirits are available as well. Oddly no fresh fruit options and keep in mind on a Sunday they can't serve spirits until noon. The full menu is also available during brunch hours. On a day like I went sitting outside was a must and they have ample seating available to accommodate.

Everything was delicious! We sat out on patio on a Sunday morning and it was the perfect brunch atmosphere. Our server, Blaire, was excellent! A tasty Monte Cristo with a side of cheese grits hit the spot and were exactly as described on the menu.

Beautiful day so I ate outside. My waitress was very friendly and was always checking on me. I got a wrap with salad. Best thing was the wasabi Caesar dressing. All the food was good but that really stood out.

I love this place for brunch and dinner. Fuego Mondays isn't worth it that much because the flatbreads and pizzas are kind of small. However, their paninis are amazing and the fries are the best in town! Go early enough to catch happy hour and you'll get a great deal. I've been here a few times and I have always had satisfactory service.

I've dined at Jackson's twice and enjoyed my food experience much better the second time around. The bison burger sounded so much better than it actually was. The bun ruined it for me- it was thick, dry and completely stole the show from the medium sear of the bison. The second time however, I enjoyed the atmosphere of brunch upstairs. I ordered corned beef hash. I liked that I have the option to order the egg any way I wanted because I am not a fan of sunny side up. Scrambled together all in a medium bowl was a perfect compliment. All in all, nothing too spectacular- but worth a try if your in the mood for brunch. Enjoy

This review is for Sunday Brunch at Jacksons. I've been to Jackson's several times before but only during dinner hours. Pretty much the same vibe. However, my party and I did get to sit upstairs for my first time. Low ceiling, dark and cold (as the fans spin directly past you up there). We did request to have them turned off and they were turned back on before we paid our bills. The brunch menu has some really good and interesting varieties of different foods as well as brunch-y beverages (Toucan Sam - Three Olives Loopy Vodka & Milk with Fruit Loop Garnish). I only had water to drink and ended up with the Brunch Pizza as my meal. The Brunch Pizza is scrambled egg, bacon, sausage and gravy with 2 cheeses all on a biscuit crust (4 small slices). Also shared a side of three cheese grits. The pizza was standard in flavor. Wasn't outstanding, wasn't bad by any means. The cheese grits were good with very strong cheese flavor without being physically cheesy (no stringy cheese pulling everywhere). We were there before it got really busy tho' our waitress wasn't the fastest nor most attentive to our table. I'll have to return for something other than brunch to update this review.

Beer selection is great and our server Zelda was really sweet and great with a big party but we had a reservation for seventeen people and they only gave us fifteen seats. I ordered the jersey flatbread and was disappointed, it was soggy and the two pieces of sausage on it did nothing to mask the awful bitter pepper spread they used as a sauce. My gf loved the Philly cheesesteak she ordered so obviously they do some things well, I may have just ordered the wrong thing!

Poor dining experience. We arrived around 6pm, asked for an outside table (there were lots of empty tables), and were told there was a 30 minute wait. So we sat inside. A few minutes later some friends came in and asked for an outside table and were seated immediately, and they did not have a reservation. We sat and ate inside and it was so loud we could not carry on a conversation. Unlikely we will return, sad to say.

Jacksons was located across the street from the Aloft hotel I was staying at while traveling for business in the Birmingham area. I ventured in on a Tuesday, when they offer an all night happy hour. This was the primary reason for my staying after looking at an underwhelming menu selection. I ordered a patty melt that came with a very unimpressive side Caesar salad. (I was so relieved I did not opt for the entree size Caesar salad I was contemplating). The patty melt was average at best. The beer that was half off was an IPA draft and was tasty. I left feeling a little cheated as this place was a recommended spot; but for my only paid for dinner in Birmingham, it did not compete with my high expectations. I would not return to Jacksons again unless I was only grabbing cocktails on a Tuesday.

Love their food. I've been many times but lately the service is AWFUL. Last time we came (months ago) and we waited forever and manager only discounted the dip we had. And when I say we waited forever it had to be over an hour and a half. Flash forward to today. There might be 4 tables full inside (patio was pretty crowded) but again, we waited forever. Food was good, not great. But we didn't get our app until after we got our meal. Manager took app off the bill which is fine but something has to be done about the service. Jackson's used to be one of my favorite places to go but sadly will not visit as frequently as before. Also tonight just waited probably 15 minutes to get our check picked up. And we were told when we sat down that all drinks were half off and now when we got our bill we were told that specialty drinks were not half off. They are not firing on all cylinders and will not be back in the near future.

I was there twice last week with a friend & had the steak. It was very good, heavy on the garlic but perfectly cooked for me! Service was spotty (they forgot to bring our appetizer one night). The outdoor seating area was very comfortable. I was here a few years ago on a weekend night & it can get very loud inside later in the evening!

Awesome fresh yummy food in a great industrial bar setting with a giant pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant! Great attentive service (thank you Missy!) and great prices makes this our go to when we're in B'ham.

Grilled meatloaf was amazing! Really a great place, would come back in a heartbeat if ever in Birmingham again. Has some TV's at the bar and is wide open with a good patio so there are plenty of options there. Good service and reasonably priced for sure. Can't go wrong

This was our 2nd or 3rd visit on a Friday night. They were not that crowded but maybe they were short of a cook. Our food took a good 35 min. Which is odd for a grilled chicken and a chicken panini. I guess they were out of panini bread and used Texas toast. The iced tea was water with food coloring so we asked for coke. The coke was flat soda water with food coloring. My husband ordered the Caesar salad as an appetizer the served it on the plate along with his sandwich. The best part of the evening was being together and sitting outside. We will now find a place to do that where we can enjoy our food.

I've been to Jack's for happy hour a few times and it is always a hit with me. Their salads and burgers are really good. They have the expected salad and burger choices, but also offer a mix up on the typical flavors. I love their pimiento burger, fantastic, and their wasabi caesar salad. The food is good, and the prices are usually decent. I like that I can get out of there with dinner and a beer for under $20 including tax and tip. If you are going to happy hour, be sure to get there early to get a seat. It can get crowded at times. Also, be sure to ask about the drink specials. There is always a good one going on.

Ok so honestly, I just really really love this place! Sometimes you just need some "real food." Nothing overly fancy or over-thought, just good ol' American fare, made from quality ingredients. That's what you get at Jackson's. The wait staff, from my multitude of experiences there, are wonderful and not annoying (aka overattentive and disruptive). Pimiento cheeseburger: my go-to. Delicious. I also love that pretty much any time of day I can pop in and grab a seat (or sit outside, weather permitting), and get whatever meal I am on at that point. Plus, I just learned that you can do take-out. This is such a lifesaver, especially if you have a very hungry, meat-loving boyfriend who isn't wholly on board with your gluten-free, mostly paleo lifestyle just yet. Call in your order (press call on the Yelp app!), wait about 20 minutes, then go pick it up from the bar in the back. Easy peasy. Love!

Jackson's is definitely underrated. I come here often with buddies for drinks and some grub. The wait staff is awesome, ask for a table in Brandon's section; he'll take great care of you and your party large or small. I love the buffalo feathers and the fries served with the wasabi aioli. I used to get their mussels until they recently took it off the menu. If you're looking for a great casual spot to hang with friends and get some good drinks and food then Jackson's is a must try. Their desserts are also great, try the gooey cake!

Not a bad place to be on a Friday/Saturday night, ESPECIALLY during the warmer months (the patio is the place to be on spring/summer nights). Jackson's has got a chilled-out local bar kinda feel that's pretty inviting. The food's great (although it seems not the most filling unless you pile on the order), the wait staff's the hip, nonchalant type (which is awesome), and the atmosphere is exactly what you'd want when hangin' out on a laid-back afternoon/evening with several friends. It's located in the slightly still new Soho district, so it has a bit of trendy accompanying it; but it manages to escape pretentiousness quite well, so no worries about attire - come as you are. In the same breath, though, it seems like a great place to meet people if so desired, so keep that in mind if you're "on the hunt". lol Although I haven't been in a while, I haven't given up on Jackson's and am looking forward to chillaxin' on that patio as soon as old man Winter takes a friggin' hike. :) Check it out - I'm convinced you'll dig it...

Mmmmmm mmmm! Andouille pups, shrimp & grits, & French onion soup. I am fat and happy. The atmosphere is pretty good on a hot southern night and believe me the food is even better. I had creamy 3-cheese grits with shrimp & sausage and guarantee it was worth the trip!

The food is mediocre. Nothing special. The drinks are meh! I tried the Sonara wrap. It was soggy and the shrimps were not all that great. Got the Moscow mule, which was so-so. Wouldn't be my first choice.

    (3)
  • Rob R.

Nice atmosphere and super friendly staff. The sonora wrap was pretty tasty - shrimp inside a grilled spinach tortilla. Tried a sample of the baked marinara, but the sauce tasted like something out of a can. The cookie dough egg rolls are totally overrated. Even the five year old wasn't much of a fan. Will definitely try it again.

My husband and I were in town visiting friends from NY and they took us here. The friend green tomatoes and verde dip. both were delicious! also I had a sangria and it was sooo good. it smelled so good in the restaurant and my meal which was the chicken bacon wrap was delish! My husband had the Reuben and he thought it was really good. definitely would recommend!

Service hasn't always been great, but was subpar tonight. Loudmouth customers in an already loud room made for a poor experience, unless that's what you want. Food is always good, just difficult to enjoy it.

Finally got to try the infamous Jackson's and overall it was a great experience. It was in the evening when we arrived and I was really impressed with the night setting they have. It has candlelight but not overly done. It truly was a perfect ambiance for a date, business meeting, or even a couple of friends who want to get together. That is hard to accomplish seeing wise so definately kudos to them. I came with a group of 21 total people and was very impressed at prompt service and friendliness. The waiters seemed on top of it and they really worked as a team. Set up:Great outside seating with candlelight, plenty of tables, an upstairs dining option, perfect size bar, and high ceilings, the lights inside are dim, the background music is good volume wise so we could carry a conversation. Food wise: I ordered the half pound burger with no bun and the side salad came with it. I also asked for a side of avocado. As I looked around the table at what my group got I sorta wished I tried something different but it jas been said always judge a place by their burger. Haha. So here it goes....I definately didn't mind the burger but was expecting more flavor wise. My friend got a burger with the bun and it was huge and looked really delicious. So I do think the emphasis is the bun. It did have a nice smoked flavor but that's about it. The salad served seemed very fresh and the ranch served with it was a great ranch dressing. I will definitely go back and try some other food. It was a very good experience

Extremely happy with my lunch today...the Madame Croquet, grilled ham and swiss with a nice fried egg on top... the champagne vinaigrette was amazing on the salad and I can't wait to go back and try the heavenly cookie dough egg rolls... they're amazing!

Great place to be if you like overpriced food, bad service, and a filthy environment. I saw the guy cooking pizza literally dripping sweat into people's food. Gross. Server was disinterested and rushed us throughout our entire meal (of which I didn't eat, after seeing the bodily fluid garnish).

My girlfriend and I are new to the area and were looking for a place that was dog friendly on the patio. I had "The Tasty" and it's exactly what you expect when you order a cheeseburger inspired omelette. Every staff member we encountered was super nice and the service was great. Good food, and a good place to hang out. Probably on the lower end of 4 stars, but that said, I also never made it inside as I was eating on the patio with the pup.

So very disappointed. This is my third memorable visit. The first, I did not like it. The second, for lunch, I really enjoyed. The food was much better and I was hopeful that I knew from now on what to order. Last night, we took my future in-laws for the first time--and met a friend who was performing in the opera. We were sat in the section of a girl who was training a new server AND she had a large, loud party upstairs. To start our bad experience, she wasn't able to keep up with us or get drink orders accurately bc she had too much to do. I stuck with the Madame croque dinner since I enjoyed it so much before. It was TERRIBLE. I'm sorry to be loud, but third times a make or break for me....the sandwich just was nothing impressive. The fries were cold... There are too many good restaurants in this area for me to come back for dinner. Oh well!

The layout consists of a gorgeous bar and restaurant with a lovely patio area. The interior has high ceiling and a second floor if you prefer to host a private event. The employees here are very polite and friendly and make sure you get sufficient attention. The pizza is phenomenal. It looks like flatbread, but the flavors, cheese, and toppings completely overpower the flatbread. Their pepperoni flavor was my favorite but their vegetarian pizzas were just as good.

Mmmm...cookie dough egg rolls...I don't even care what else they have or don't have. This is my jam. I guess the rest is good, too. Thank you, Jackson's for this little bit of sweet nothing for my taste buds.

Hubby and I were in the Homewood area Friday. We decided to stop in after reading the lovely Alden's review. I can see why this is a local favorite - the drinks are fantastic. Our waiter suggested that I try the "Tennessee Stud" before ordering it; I decided to go with the Pumpkin Sangria. It was awesome stuff. Red wine and pumpkin ale...yummy! Hubby had the Reuben sandwick; I ordered the fish tacos as my main entree. Loved them! But there's only two on the plate, as it's mainly an appetizer. Three would actually be perfect. The Reuben was a good sandwich, but the waiter and I tried to convince hubby to order the bison burger. He wishes he had. Guess we'll be back to try the bison burger.

Crappy, flat Gin and Tonic with an old dried up lime. Did not taste like it had much gin in it either. We were going to eat but figured it would not be worth it. The prices seem very high for the quality that you're likely to receive. The special on Tuesday when we went was supposed to be half price beer and well drinks, but the waitress brought me a double and said that they actually give you a double for the price of a single, so it's a bit misleading. There are much better places in town to spend happy hour, so I doubt I'll be back.

    (2)
  • Sabrina C.

It's over prices for below average food. The Brussels sprouts for $3 was the best thing there. I had a Reuben that had packaged meat, lacking sauerkraut, and stale bread. The chips were lays potato chips and store bought fries. The jalapeño app was ridiculously expensive for two jalapeños, $7 (3.50 a jalapeño) From what I was told, this place used to have mainly homemade food back in the day and that is what I was expecting.

Choices are good and Jackson's has 'um with great food, a good happy hour, and one of the most popular patios in town. Because Jackson's happy hour includes half-price beer, the beer list is probably your first stop. The bar has what I like to call the "bar traditionals:" Blue Moon, Heineken, Yuengling and the Buds. However, if you're looking for something with a local flavor Jackson's has that, too, with a small selection of independently brewed beers on draft. There's a cocktail and wine list, too. When it comes to food, what you're likely to have depends on the time and day of the week you're stopping in. Jackson's has a full, regular menu, a limited-option late-night menu and a brunch menu. The regular menu includes what you'll typically run into at an American-Traditional restaurant like pastas, sandwiches, and soups & salads. If you're out late with friends, I hope you like pizza because this menu features pizzas cooked in the wood-burning stove. Brunch is for the omelet lovers. The food on each looks equally amazing, but you'll usually see me munching away on the Philly Cheesesteak (regular menu), the Omelet to Order (brunch), or French Pizza (Late Night). While the regular menu is full of food likely to leave you stuffed, you'd miss out on something spectacular if you didn't check out the dessert menu. I'm going to spoil the surprise here and tell you about the chocolate-chip cookie dough egg roll. My stomach is getting sugar cramps as my mind plays a slowmo montage imagining a chocolate drizzled, flash-fried roll of chocolate-chip cookie dough served with ice cream. Usually I'm all about sharing dessert, but I'd have to ask my date, "Where's your's?" on this one. I've been here a handful of times, but not until recently did I realize how much fun Jackson's can be.

I can always find something tasty at Jackson's. Somewhere between the section for sandwiches and the section for other sandwiches, there are several dishes which are delights. Ahi Wasabi Caesar Salad. Pimento Panini. The brunch is killer. I'm fairly certain the cholesterol intake from here alone will murder me. Yet if you've never tried chocolate chip cookie dough egg rolls, you must indulge that fat southern part of you screaming for incredibly sugary, fatty, fried dessert. The drink menu is magical. Somewhere between unicorns and "you shall not pass" magical. But there is one major problem - aside from the hipsters - that keeps me from coming here more. Yep. What's that? You didn't hear the reason? That's because it's SO. LOUD. Somewhere around 8 million gigawatts worth of loud. I feel like it's loud enough that I should be bouncing to some uhn tiss uhn tiss trance or jungle joint. Instead, I'm straining to hear friends talk over the loud yuppy dinks and screaming hipsters. Cheers!

Not sure what some folks expect for only $$. I travel a lot for business and eat out a lot. This was pretty darn good. Good service, unique menu and a good local beer selection. I had the barbecued feathers - never had anything like it before. Very interesting in a good way. The pork chop was tender and had very good flavor, maybe a tad spicy if you like blander foods, offset by the mango chutney. They could have done a little more with the grits and the salad, but hey, at $$, the grade is still 9/10. Had to try the cookie dough egg rolls as everyone raved. Probably didn't need dessert, not a huge chocolate fan, and with all the hype, I'm not sure what I expected. Good, and I'd totally want to share it on a night out with the Mrs., but not "to die for". Overall, I'll definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

I visited one afternoon with a group from my office. The atmosphere seemed pretty chill and reminded me a little of Brown's Corner in Tuscaloosa with the open "second floor" area inside. If it hadn't been so scorchingly hot, a seat at one of the plentiful tables outside on the patio would have been lovely, but on the afternoon in question, the black metal chairs would have permanently branded me. The sangria was alright, although I'm spoiled by what I had in Spain, so I'm probably not the best judge of American sangria. Sadly I did not get to try the cookie dough egg rolls, but from the raving reviews here and from a few folks in my group, I may have to make a return trip specifically to try them! Parking was a little tricky for me to find, but there is a lot out behind the restaurant that it shares with other establishments in the Soho area.

Walking around the area during the summer months looking for something sweet, friends and I happened to stumble on Jackson's. Love the outdoor seating (so many people brought their dogs! very cool that they don't mind the furrier patrons), and the desserts were all heavenly!! I recently had a mad craving for the cookie dough egg rolls, which prompted this review. "Chocolate-chip dough flash-fried in pastry" -- yes, yes, a thousand times yes! No idea what the full meals are like, but if you ever want coffee and dessert, Jackson's nails it!

This is a gem. Found it open on Sunday evening ... And a pretty happening place at that. Cool SoHo setting. Ate outside and I noticed that this place is dog friendly, too! I had a nice, light steak Cesar but the selection was wide (and reasonably priced). Definitely will be back!

Great location. Huge outdoor dining area. We ate here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, so we sat outside. Enjoy a couple of rounds of adult beverages and ate the yummy Sesame Buffalo Feathers, the Kentucky Club and a Flatbread. All very tasty though not quit as filling as we like... I love the Specialty "Feathers." I could eat several orders of these all by myself! Definitely a great bar-type restaurant and a Go-To place when wanting to eat outside.

Blech! Went here with some friends while we were in Birmingham. We had the beer cheese dip for an appetizer, it was awful, it tasted like some cheap cheese dip (Velveeta maybe?) whatever it was, it was disgusting. My husband and I both ordered burgers, we were hoping for a good burger, I ordered mine medium well because of too many experiences of medium being too pink for my tastes, well medium-well obviously means "charred" it was deplorable. There were so many black burnt parts of the burger and it was far from medium-well, it wasn't even well done, it was too well done! One star because the atmosphere was fine!

One of my favorite places for Boyfriend and I to celebrate.. anything! On 11/11/11 we finally tried the "cookie-dough eggroll" figuring it'd be worth it if it killed us - and we were right.. In that it was worth it. I've been telling people since: it's just something you have to have, at least once, even if you can only manage a few bites of the rich decadence. The "real" food and the drinks are the reason we frequent, though. Great food and toast-worthy drinks make every visit a special occasion.

  • Mark S.

Very disappointing experience. Caesar salad had almost no dressing and Croque Monsieur was a poor imitation of the real thing - bread was dry and the sandwich had a sort of cheese sauce poured on top and baked instead of battered. We sat on the upper level where it was so dark we could barely see our food. We had driven up from Tuscaloosa and it was not worth the trip.

Stopped by for lunch. There is a very nice selection of food and most everything is good. Had the Salmon BLT which was plenty of food for lunch. The salmon was a little dry and the sauce a little strong but overall enjoyed it. Food is good to very good depending on what you get; service was a little slow but waitress definitely took care of us.

I'm stationed in Hoover, AL on a 7 month consulting project. I had to get out, and a friend in the office told me to try Jackson's in the trendy Homewood area. I took 11, yes 11, of my colleagues. :) I will say that the place had a GREAT atmosphere and GREAT dessert. Everyone must have one of the chocolate chip cookie dough spring rolls. Sounds weird, but truly incredible. However, that's where the great stuff stops, but it was what increased my rating. My meal was just wasnt that great. Neither were the appetizers. While the drinks and dessert left us feeling satisfied, they didn't cover up the not so great food. I will go back for drinks, but that's probably it. Great patio in the spring!

Went here recently on a business trip on the recommendation of the hotel I was at in Birmingham. Very cool spot in a great little neighborhood. I went with a colleague and sat at the bar for dinner. They had the baseball game on which is what we were looking for. Smaller crowd I felt for a Thursday night but those whom I did speak with were all very friendly (This seems to be a common theme down South.) The bartender, Will was very friendly and engaging. He was originally from my home region so we had a nice rapport. He recommended some local brews to which we went with and were both very happy with as well. He also broke up our tabs so we'd each get two checks, one for food and one for booze, for expense reasons. He was more than happy to do this. Next for dinner, they had a nice looking pizza oven and a nice selection to boot. Being from the Northeast I was looking to try something more local as I don't travel to the South very often. My colleague ended up getting the pizza and swore by it but it didn't look all that great to me. I wasn't too hungry after a big lunch and asked Will what he recommended and without hesitation he said the pork chop was the best on the menu. It was a single chop with a nice kick served over seven cheese grits. It was the perfect size for me. A.) The grits were absolutely amazing, I was so excited. B.) The chop was cooked perfect and so tasty. It had a southern kick to it which was quite pleasant but ended up catching up with me about half-way through and ended up being a bit much even. But by that time I was full anyways (we did have 2-3 beers also.) We hung for a bit after dinner and relaxed and Will even bought us a round which is always a plus. I will actually be traveling back to Birmingham this month and will absolutely be headed back to Jackson's. I do have one negative and it's that both the men's and women's restrooms are singles and even on a slower night seemed to be crowded. They even have an up-stairs area with no more restrooms. It wasn't a huge issue but this seems like the type of place that draws a good young weekend crowd of drinkers leading to a longer line.

The food is just okay, but the atmosphere keeps me coming back. The patio is a great place to have a drink or three. The place can be relatively crowded (but it's usually with good looking yuppies, so can't complain). Some of my friends swear by the cookie dough eggrolls, but I find them a bit too rich.

I like Jacksons and this would have been a 4 star review if I hadn't realized i'd been overcharged on my last visit here. Im starting to notice a trend in places I frequent around town adding a little extra padding to my tab and it's becoming annoying. Im not saying it was intentional or an extra 10 stay completely away. I am saying be weary whether enjoying 2 dollar beers on the patio or consuming a delicious pizza you might want to pay cash instead of leaving your card open.

Bought a Groupon for Jacksons but not convinced it was worth it. Our waiter Jason was really nice but food was subpar. Before the entree, the guacamole and chips were a nice appetizer but the champagne salad dressing on the salad added no flavor and made for a wet salad. The shrimp were slightly undercooked and the garlic sirloin (ordered medium) would have been pretty good if if prepared to order but was cooked well done and was too dry. The manager was nice enough to comp us a dessert and we got the cookie dough egg roll which was the highlight of the meal but not worth revisiting Jacksons. If in the neighborhood I recommend going to Jinsei or Do Di Yo's.

Go there for a drink because of the atmosphere but wouldn't eat the food. Ordered a blackened tuna panini and man was it dry as a bone. My wife got the lemon shrimp pasta and did it SUCK!!! It had no seasoning (even lemon) and was just shrimp and pasta with a bland alfredo. Was completely disappointed with the food, no amount of atmosphere make a place worth visting if the food is terrible.

The menu is expansive and so reasonablly priced. There is a chilled out feel the the restaurant and the servers are kind and helpful. There is a really different wine list and great specialty drink options. I have eaten brunch, lunch, dinner, and late night here and I am always pleased with my experience. They also have a huge patio that is perfect for outside dining. Bring the family, bring the guys, bring the date, bring your parents, and/or bring your dog....everyone will be happy you did!!!

This place was phenomenal from start to finish. I was visiting my in-laws and we decided to grab a late lunch. We chose Jackson's after turning to Yelp for suggestions, and it did not disappoint. The menu had a lot of options--so many of them sounded good that I wasn't sure what to order. Enter Jonathan, our helpful server. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about practically everything on the menu. He convinced me that the panini was the better way to go as opposed to the fish sandwich. I ordered the Pacific panini (blackened ahi tuna w/ provolone and salsa) with the chopped salad for my side and loved it. My wife ordered the Sonora torrado--a slightly grilled spinach wrap that consisted of southwest shrimp, black-bean salsa, avocado, provolone, and tomato. We split the two between us, and I'm still not sure which was better because they were both so good. Each of our meals was under $10, the service was spectacular, and place had a neat setup. I can see this being a popular happy hour hangout, and I would definitely come back if I find myself in this area.

We ate outside, which was nice. I think it might have been a bit tough to hear each other talk if we were inside. Started with the wasabi caesar salad. Thought it needed one more ingredient to jazz it up, but it left a nice spicy after taste. Then ordered the sirloin steak with Parmesan mashed potatoes. The potatoes were good, but the garlic butter sauce over the steak was over powering. Finished with the gooey butter cake with a glass of milk. The cake had a cheesecake consistency but was very good. It was very sweet, so the glass of milk created a perfect balance by cutting the sweetness.

when looking at the restaurant from the outside in, it was a home good feeling and when i read the menu it to was very inviting but sad to say that the service sucked. drinks were so so i had ordered a sangria it was basically a orange and pineapple juice with a splash of red wine not what i call sangria. food was very bland and took for ever i ordered the tuna dish and it had no flavor my husband ordered the stake fritter and it was just meat slathered in butter you do that when the cut of meat is not good and that's exactly what it was so over all bad service, food took for ever and when it did come out it was not what the eye or the taste buds were craving. you know what they say looks can be deceiving well it was true in Jackson bistro's case. not my idea of a fun lunch or dinner. menu was over priced and the food did not deliver the flavor

Great food and service! Went tonight on the recommendation of another local restaurant that was fully booked with private parties. The menu was huge---if you can't find something here, then something's wrong with you. Everything was wonderful. Kids split several small plates with positive results. Pasta marinara was good and large. French pizza was really tasty. The have a huge pizza oven on site, and the atmosphere is casual and warm despite being more open and modern in style. Staff were really friendly and offered recommendations which turned out to be real hits. Desserts were amazing too: warm butter cake and cookie dough spring rolls, both with ice cream. Just too good. A must try!

I love Jackson's! When I moved away from BHam 4 years ago Jackson's was one of the places I had to come back to. My coworker and I went last night and it was exactly how I remembered it, amazing. We sat at the bar and Carole the bar tender was awesome. She filled me in on all the Bham changes over the past 4 years and making me feel at home again. I couldn't decide what to eat bc all the food is great so I asked Carole to surprise me with her favorite Jackson's menu item and she hooked me up with the best meal I've ever had there. Next chance you get go see Carole at the bar in Jackson's and you'll have the best dining experience you've ever had at Jackson's.

Easy peasy. Love!

Everything was delicious! We sat out on patio on a Sunday morning and it was the perfect brunch atmosphere. Our server, Blaire, was excellent! A tasty Monte Cristo with a side of cheese grits hit the spot and were exactly as described on the menu.

The food is mediocre. Nothing special. The drinks are meh! I tried the Sonara wrap. It was soggy and the shrimps were not all that great. Got the Moscow mule, which was so-so. Wouldn't be my first choice.

Cheers!

Mmmm...cookie dough egg rolls...I don't even care what else they have or don't have. This is my jam. I guess the rest is good, too. Thank you, Jackson's for this little bit of sweet nothing for my taste buds.

A must try!
