Since I was a wee child, I have wanted to eat at the Bates House of Turkey. Today, my childhood goal was realized. It was a nostalgic trip back to the many roadside diners we ate at on vacation. While that sounds like a positive thing... not so much. Dated decor, pictures, of turkeys everywhere and Muzak. Holy smokes they played elevator music! Its like going to the house of an eccentric grandmother. The menu as you might guess is all about turkey. Since that's their deal you figure it would be off the hook, crazy good turkey. I'd put it closer to a school lunchroom. It was under-seasoned and dry. I had the turkey and dressing dinner and I chose Mac and cheese and turnip greens as my sides. The Mac was creamy and good. The greens were good but under seasoned. The dressing was moist but absolutely tasteless. The corn muffin was awful. It was easily the worst cornbread I've ever eaten. Totally dry, dense and better suited as a wheel chock than food stuff. Others opted for turkey sandwiches and were equally underwhelmed. Turkey, dense bread and a little lettuce served with a bag of chips. It was like a cheap box lunch. We sat there and laughed at how amazingly underwhelming the food really was. On the plus, the restaurant is clean, the prices were easy on the pocket, the people were nice and the food really isn't bad, just nothing special. In short, the dated kitsch was fun but the food sub standard. As for my teenager, she said I was too nice and that "the place sucked".

We have been stopping in almost every time we travel from Gulf Shores to Birmingham. Smoked turkey sandwich is tasty and satisfying. Free range turkey is offered in a variety of ways. Refreshing place to stop and eat.

A great lunch stop. Great smoked turkey. The sandwiches are pretty simple, more luncheon counter than deli style- which is fine because the turkey is great and stands on its own. We sat outside at the picnic tables. I wouldn't drive out of the way to eat there, but it's a great spot for a good meal instead of gas station food or McDonald's.

So Bates House of Turkey. What can one say? If you are driving past this place, how can not the combination of curiosity and hunger make you stop in your tracks? There are places that focus on chicken, beef, and pork. Where else can you find one that talks Turkey? Seriously, if you are driving down I65 through Greenville an it is lunch or dinner time, stop and Bates and get y'self a turkey sandwich, or a full turkey dinner. Everyone loves Turkey, and yet we only eat it one or twice a year. What's up with that? You can also order free range smoked turkey on line and have it shipped. Makes a great gift for those who already have everything! There are no showers at Bates, only Turkey, and delicious fixin's and pecan pies. Check it, weary travelers!

Not impressed at all. Food wasn't good and portion sizes were terrible. My husband ordered the turkey "meal" and only got two thin, small slices of turkey. I got the wrap and it wasn't good either. Plus they made us pay .70 for cups of water! Bathrooms were clean though.

The idea of TURKEY was super appealing. The actual experience was eh-ok, it's turkey, but not like I was hoping for. A bit on the pricey side as well. But if you have a hankering for turkey and fixings and your in the area, Give it a go. Otherwise keep on trucking' and make yourself a turkey at home.

A friend said I should stop and eat here, so we did. We are still friends, but my friend know nothing about food! I think this place once WAS a good spot, but it's heyday is long past. Should have been cleaner, quality of the food could have been higher. No, I would not eat there again.

I decided to stop by Bates House of Turkey because I wanted to try more local food instead of the usual fast food as I drove back to NC. The reviews didn't seem too promising, however, their website made it seem as though their food was all the rave and healthy so I decided to check them out. When I first entered, there were a few people in line and a good ten people in the dining area--a good sign in my mind. It really seemed like there were a lot of locals in the place which made me feel more confident about my choice. I would describe it as a quaint and charming place, almost like going to grandma's (in a good and homey way). I decided to try the turkey bbq because where else am I going to get that? It was delicious! I ate that sandwich so quickly it really scared me... Their sandwiches came with a bag of lay's chips and I got a soda for the road. Sadly, their cokes tasted strange. Maybe the syrup was running low? Either way, I got a sweet tea which was nice and sweet; just how I like it! Bottom line: If I ever happen to pass through AL again, I'm going to try and come back here; I had a great experience! Disclaimer: Not really sure how "healthy" it is, but its lean meat and delicious, so what do I have to complain about?

I've been coming here since I was a little boy and it is a fond place for me to visit. No fried foods just great turkey plates and sandwhiches. If you are traveling up I-65 back from the beach/gulf coast, I recommend you stop in.

Don't waste your time. I ordered an eight dollar turkey sandwich and an ice tea and it look like something that should have been served to a six-year-old in a grade school lunchroom. Go to Subway across the street in the gas station if you want to better turkey sandwich.

Our favorite stop when heading to the beach! The home cooking is good, turkey salad wrap is great! We always grab some turkey jerky for the ride. Very peppery and yummy!

Young lady at cash register is unpleasant, rude, and snippy. Food would have been worth making this a common stop , but that's the second time we've encountered rude service here. I won't be returning.

We had the turkey plate and the open face turkey sandwich plate Both were passable but not better than that. Staff were not particularly nice, perhaps because it was lunchtime and a bit busy. We ate in the dining room All was ok but we would probably not bother to stop again

We stopped here on the way down to Daphne, Alabama and enjoyed it so much that we had to stop again on our way back up to Atlanta. Family owned. Free range. Very tasty turkey wraps! We recommend this stop for anyone traveling route 65.

Unique and charming. Good simple sandwiches. This places closes at 7pm on the dot. There were lots of people turned away and more were showing up as we left. They should open later and do dinner, its got huge potentional. We will make this our halfway stop from now on, if its opened.

The turkey is bland and difficult to eat owing to the dryness unless covered in the gravy. The cranberry salad was good as was the Cole slaw. The one biggest issue I have is the sign at the door indicating the owner will prosecute any patron carrying a legal firearm. Had I not been starving and passing through I'd have eaten elsewhere. If you have a legal carry permit, spend your money somewhere they don't disarm the good guys.

Came here based on the Yelp reviews and because Cracker Barrel was packed. There is a reason I could get in here and not Cracker Barrel. The food was ok, you order at the counter, and the folks behind the counter are rude. Several people complained about their orders being wrong and the kids behind the counter sigh and roll their eyes. I would expect better customer service from a local place. Very annoying!

I love Alabama: it's a great state celebrating its own quirky goodness. Nothing exemplifies the good ole Bama nation like Bates House of Turkey. Kevin P. and I have stopped here several times on our way to Gulf Shores. It's always a true delight. We've had everything including BBQ Turkey, Turkey Salad, and the Open-Faced Turkey Sandwich. The taste is just like the food from Grammy's kitchen. On our most recent trip we sprang for a piece of pecan pie to end our lunch. At the end I politely asked a server where the restroom is, to which she pointed our the sign "Roost Area". So cute! Ultimately this place beats the pants off most fast food you'll find while road tripping. if you're looking for a good home-cooked meal while cruising through Alabama, y'all have got to stop at Bates House of Turkey.

Had the open face turkey sandwich - I'm no turkey connoisseur, but I have had better. The sides were actually pretty good and I liked the bread soaked in gravy. My biggest beef (so to speak) with this place is that we came an hour before closing and the chairs were already up on the tables and the bathrooms were closed for cleaning (apparently not to be re-opened). Little things like that can be very irritable for travelers who are expecting a place to use the facilities and wash up before eating. 3-star food, 1-star service. 2 overall.

The chef salad was fresh and had a large serving of shaved deli-style turkey breast. The barbecue turkey sandwich left something to be desired.

This place wasn't that good. The turkey was alright but they barely gave you any and the vegetables tasted straight out of the can. I'll probably never eat here again.

This place is pitiful. Any good reviews must have been made by family members or employees. We paid over $17 for lunch. The BBQ sandwich I got was very (VERY!) small and not very good. They charged $5.40 for something worth, maybe, $1. Way over priced. Also got the potato salad and it was the worst I have ever tasted. It is hard to mess up potato salad, but they have done it. My wife got an open faced turkey sandwich and not only was the portion puny, the turkey tasted like processed turkey and the "fixin's" were substandard. All in all it was a pitiful meal, which was way over priced. I am normally very forgiving when it comes to criticizing a restaurant's food. But I actually joined Yelp just so I could make this review. It was that bad. Stay away!

This place will shock you with exceeded expectations! First, it's located in the same parking lot, practically, with a busy gas station, so a house of turkey? How good could that be? IT'S EXCELLENT! The decor was great, the turkey tender, the sides perfect (I had stuffing & sweet potatoes), the coffee fresh, and the price reasonable! Very Highly Recommended!!

Stranded in Greenville last January, this place was kind of an oasis. While the restaurant food was so-so, the help was very cheerful. However, the hit was the large pack of turkey keilbasa that I bought at the gas station next door. That fed me for the next two days on the road (ice chest mand.) ! Am thinking of ordering some things from them on-line for Christmas. Will definitely stop there again when I am so blessed as to be in Alabama....

No one believes the bad reviews, judging from the crowd at Bates on a Sunday afternoon!! We enjoyed the turkey dinner very much. The sides were not from a can, as evidenced by thready strands in the sweet potato casserole and a fresh crisp topping of brown sugar and cinnamon. Desserts from Walmart? I think not-the banana pudding was made within the last 24 hours, as the bananas were still firm and light-colored. I didn't even mention the turkey which was succulent!! Only 4 stars cause 5 stars belong to Mom's Thanksgiving feast! Definitely worth the stop!

I used to traverse the Atlanta to Mobile, Al route a couple of times a year in order to go visit my grandparents. This restaurant is about 1/2 way during the long and tedious drive. When driving to Mobile there is pretty much nothing after this exit other than the Pee-can factory store (which is a whole other story). The huge sign on the top of the restaurant beckons to travelers with that well known name- Bates! Who wouldn't want to stop at a place called Bates House of Turkey in a ramshackle little building? Not me. The turkey was always tasty, not dried out like it can definitely get. The sides are what you would typically find at any southern road side restaurant- mac n cheese, mashed taters, veggies, stuffing..... Oh and you can buy turkeys and other turkey products on locations as well as casseroles. All and all a decent place to go when traveling through the bland state of Alabama.

Was this place disappointing! Roadfood.com did say there was little, aside from fast food, to eat between Montgomery & Mobile Alabama, aside from this place, and this is true. Manpanion and I probably would have been better off eating at Subway. While the turkey was real turkey, not processed, it was dry and machine-sliced. The gravy was awful - kind of like congealed jelly; the cornbread stuffing was bland; the "vegetable" choice on the $8 roast turkey dinner plate was toasted potatoes, which were shriveled and withered, and "vegetable" casserole, which was velveeta with canned onions and a couple canned broccoli pieces. Manpnion noted the roll was a school-cafeteria roll. The plates & utensils are plastic, cups styrofoam, but the decor is pleasingly tacky-turkey kitsch. Pretty disappointing for $16, which was the roast turkey plate and open sandwich. Cranberry sauce is from the can. Pies, which we did not sample, are from Costco or Walmart. Skip it and bring some sandwiches or wait to eat good Southern food elsewhere.
