Went here in August after seeing all the billboards touting it's hundred year history. The food was awful. It's not worth saying anything else.

Stopped here on the way to the beach. Billboard sign on the highway said it was very old and "world famous". I ordered the chipped bbq sandwich. It tasted like something out of a school cafeteria. I am a teacher so I know what cafeteria food tastes like. Yuck! The sauce was VERY bland, ketchup has more flavor. The french fries were very standard. The cole slaw was dry and unedible. Best things about the place: - the nice, very friendly waitress - the sweet tea. Honestly I would have been happier with lunch from Burger King and the like. It seems like they stay busy with people passing through. I hope traveling families read this before they set off on their way. Our total lunch bill for 4 adults and 2 children was $60!!

I went to college in SE Alabama too long ago to think about and back then I would go down to Panama City, FL to the beach more weekends than not. I was recently back visiting friends/alma mater, so I decided to do that drive again. Back in college, Dobbs' was a mandatory stop and having grown even more fond of BBQ over the years (if it's possible for me to get MORE fond of it), I of course stopped in for lunch. It's neither a large nor pretentious place. Just a good, old time BBQ joint. It's clean, the staff are so friendly, and when you walk in, it smells GREAT!! Ok, a little "then vs now". 20 years ago, the servings were huge. A fair bit smaller now. The prices back then were definitely lower than now, but then everything's pricier than it was. The BBQ was great and now it's just good. My favorites, the chipped pork sandwich and the "camp stew" (Brunswick Stew by another name), were both still very tasty, but not as unbelievably delectable as I remember them. The BBQ sauce is the thin, slightly vinegary type you find in the Carolinas. Good, but not great. The meat has a good robust smokiness to it, which is a BBQ requirement for me and I feel I got a decent amount of food for what I paid. Dobbs' has been around for about a hundred years (literally), so they obviously do something right. To my mind, it's a good place for BBQ and a place I'd definitely stop very often if I still lived in the area, but I can't honestly say it's mind-altering BBQ. Just very good. But hey, that puts it ahead of most places that claim to be BBQ joints. I certainly recommend Dobbs' if you find yourself in Dothan.

Best barbeque I have tried in the area. On my recent visit, the place was packed, even late in the afternoon. Judging by all the fellow out of towners that were eating here with me, the word is out. They have a main dining area and a separate take-out window for folks on the go. Dobbs even sells their hot sauce (careful, there's some habanero in there) for a few bucks. The wait staff and the guys at the register are super friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home. Personal favorites: -Chipped pork sandwich -Pecan pie I'm not too fond of their coleslaw though. It's chopped up too fine for my tastes.

Dobbs is an old fashioned BBQ restaurant that may look a bit dated on the surface, but serves some solid southern BBQ that is worth the stop. I had the sandwich platter with the coleslaw, it was well cooked and the slaw was some of the best I've had. My girlfriend had ribs which were also cooked well and fell right off the bone. I will admit, it wasn't the best BBQ I've ever had but it was delicious and the establishment itself was quaint and interesting for a New Yorker who was passing though. Service was top notch and the place was pretty clean. Be sure to get the sweet tea! It's great.

Second time eating at Dobbs. Walking into Dobbs is like a step back in time. The decor hasn't been updated in decades, but it's very clean and neat. This is part of the charm- if you aren't looking for that sort of thing go somewhere else. The service is excellent. They bring you a pitcher of both water and sweet tea as soon as you sit down, sometimes before they take your actual drink order. The sweet tea is heavenly, I'm convinced it has rejuvenating powers. Your server will likely be very polite and attentive, as well as knowledgeable. They will keep those pitchers full as long as you're seated, and you won't have to wait long at all for your food. I got the bbq sandwich plate, which came with french fries and a choice of slaw or beans. The beans were my choice and were perfection. I wolfed them down. My buddy got the slaw and said it was very fresh and tasty. A few minutes later our food came out. The sandwiches are massive and so tasty. Sweet and tangy bbq sauce on pulled pork. I usually have good portion control and wouldn't have eaten a large sandwich like this in one go, but I was done eating everything in 10-15 minutes. The sandwich came with fries which were also very tasty, if they came from a frozen bag they were of high quality. I doubt they had been frozen though. Mmmmm. The bbq sauce also compliments the sweet tea very well, I highly recommend choosing it as your beverage. My fiancé and her friend got the bbq ribs plate, which was also very tasty. The meat literally slides off the bone, these are ribs done right. The table will also have extra bbq sauce and home made hot sauce ready for you. We didn't have room for desert unfortunately. But the food was excellent. The last time I came here I ordered an additional sandwich to eat for dinner on the road. I was too full this time. I sort of think that people who don't enjoy the food here are simply turned off by the old timey decor and need to pay more attention to what their taste buds are saying. Dobbs is good stuff!

This is a great mom and pop place. Incredible BBQ, great staff and good prices. Must stop on the road to the beach!
(5)Richard D.
This has to be the worst barbecue I have ever eaten. It's been about 6 years ago since I ate here and it hit me as I sat down why I did not like this place. The pleasant smoke smell as you pull up will deceive you like most places. Got the combo plate, sliced pork, 2 ribs, and what was an attempt at some cut of beef. Dry, dry, dry, outside of the ketchup for barbecue sauce. No flavor. Resembled a geriatric diet plan. Huntsville AL - ChuckWagon still reigns in my book for the best barbecue in the South!

Terrible and unimpressive. Not at all what it was when I was a kid. Please don't patronize this awful place. The best thing I can say about them is they have a nice location useful for luring in traffic bound for Panama City.
(1)Matthew M.
Really really poor. Started with our seat near a window. When we pulled the blinds up there were about 20 dead flies. I got a combination plate. The pulled pork and beef weren't horrible but the ribs were. Their sauce ruined everything it touched. I really wanted to like this place but it would take a lot of money to get me to eat there again.
(1)Jamie H.
Camp stew is good. They also make the best chocolate shakes in the area. But this place always seems a little dirty and the fries are horrible. My dad claims it's the best hamburger steak in Dothan. But the gravy is packaged store bought gravy. Too bad their bbq isn't so great. Dothan could use a good local bbq joint.
(3)Tim S.
Sorry. Worst BBQ my wife and I have had in years. Stopped on our way to FL. avoid no matter how hungry you are.

There is really only 3 reasons to go to Dobbs: Camp Stew, Chipped BBQ, and Strawberry Shortcake. The Camp Stew is the best stew you will ever have! I am surprised it is not on the Top 100 things to try in Alabama before you die because I have never had anything like it. The BBQ is only good when it is chipped and mixed in with the sauce. The sauce is unique as it seems to be ketchup based and in some way has worchestershire sauce in it. I eat BBQ a lot and I've never had anything like it. Dobbs makes their own Strawberry Shortcake in the restaurant. Only order these things from Dobbs because nothing else is that good. In fact, I would highly recommend carryout because the restaurant is usually not clean, no atmosphere, and probably has the same booths and chairs and tables from 1946 when it first opened. It really needs a remodeling or an update. Beside those items I mentioned that are outstanding, it really isn't all that good. That's why I gave it a 3-star because they do those things really well...but the restaurant and everything else is just not good.
(3)Seana C.
Their meat has the texture of dog food. It doesn't have the delicious smokey flavor that you'd expect from a barbecue restaurant. I would much rather go to Smokey Joe's in Dothan. Don't waste your time or money!
(1)Brian T.
Filthy filthy filthy. It's dangerous to eat there. See pics. They boast 100 years of BarBeque. Well they must got a good deal on meat 100 years ago they are still serving it.
(1)Makenzie H.
Oh my goodness. This is a must on our vacation agenda when we travel south. I love their chipped pork sandwich with a baked potato and cole slaw. YUM! Pair it with a sweet tea and you're good to go. The restaurant itself is old and not updated, yet that totally adds to the experience! The waitresses are always extremely friendly and the pies are totally delicious. Don't be scared by the exterior of the place because what's inside is absolutely amazing!
(5)Chris D.
Good Q...good stew. Always lots of locals eating here which tell ya something. Had a great pork sandwich. Also had a stuffed baked potato. A baked potato stuffed with BBQ pork? How could that be bad. Lol!
(4)Bridget S.
I stopped here after seeing billboards for 100+ year old BBQ joint. I was driving from destin to Atlanta & really looking forward to some good BBQ. Next time I'll read the yelp reviews before spending $9 on a plate. The coleslaw was right out of a vat delivered by the cisco truck, the bread was a $.20 Hawaiian role- nothing to write home about. The stew was good, but I wouldn't call that Brunswick stew, might be personal preference. Now I can forgive all the above flaws for some seriously good pulled pork & sauce, but one bite of this & I knew there was no redeeming qualities. It tastes like they had putt Great Value ketchup & a cup of white vinegar & called it a day. Service was the only good thing about this BBQ joint.
(2)NO R.
Lots of old worn out decor from the 60s and 70s which would have been fine if the food was good. BBQpork had little taste, I knew it was a problem when I couldnt smell the pit when I walked in but decided to try it anyway. Fries and onion rings were frozen from a bag, pork had no flavor and wondered if it as purchased precooked, adding salt helped some, the pork had no wood cooked flavor and bland. Sweet tea was OK and to our disappoonment was the best part of our meal.
(1)Joe N.
I like this place, if it wasn't so far from where I live I would definitely go back. Good food and good price.
(5)Penny D.
Friendly staff and decent service, but the food was not good. Not sure what happened to this bbq restaurant. We ate here about 8 years ago and loved it. Decided to stop in today on our drive through Dothan for Thanksgiving holiday with family. Should have kept driving.
(1)Nathan R.
This is hands down the worst bbq I have ever eaten. I was suckered in by their brilliant "world famous" sign. This was one of my greatest mistakes to date. Their brisket tasted like processed off brand bologna. Their "special" stew tasted like third world baby food, and their sauce just didn't make any sense at all.
(1)Gina P.
Not good at all. The cole slaw was not good and the baked beans were not good. We did manage to get the BBQ down but only because we paid 8.50 for the meal. Will not visit again.
(1)Lynne W.
Fast and friendly but the most bland and tasteless barbecue pork and sauce you'll ever find.
(2)Butch S.
As for good bbq skip this one. It's hard to believe they survived for a 100 years. Service was good, food was less than acceptable. Ribs had no smoke and overcooked to the point of being dry. I will not be back.

My friend has been telling me that Dobb's is the best BBQ he's ever had. And after trying it out myself---I must say, it sure is GOOD! I did the right thing by ordering the chipped pork. The sauce was delicious--not too much or too little added. Then the cabin stew. Yum! That's all I can say.
(5)Mary D.
Open on Sunday, but the food wasn't that great. I didn't care for the stew at all. BBQ sandwich was fine but I've had better. Extremely friendly staff though!
(3)Bill R.
Three reasons to eat at Dobbs. 1. Service - all are very nice and know their job and the menu. 2. Stew - just good stuff. 3. Strawberry Shortcake. These are the ONLY reasons to goto Dobbs!
(2)Marqus R.
Dobbs is a pretty simple, no frills added place, offering some really decent food along with excellent, friendly service; sort of the true Southern hospitality type of service. They start you off with a "camp" soup/stew, which is rather extraordinary in having good consistency as well as a slight smoked barbecue flavor. Over all, however, Dobson's is sort of a roadside attraction type of place with a popular following of people from all ages and backgrounds. You have the college kids on the way to or from the beaches of Panama, the truck driver, the tourists and then the local's just out to get some decent "Q." There main offering is Bar-B-Qued pork which is served sort of shredded or sliced. I had the shredded and found it to be too stewy like for my tastes, but I'm no expert on it, so I can't criticize it. The menu however is wide and varied with something that should please most any palate. The best thing, however, is that friendly, charming Southern spirit of the wait staff. Maybe because of my old age, I sort of got to enjoy being called sugar, honey buns, sweetheart, cutie pie and the like. I mean even if they didn't mean it, they sure enough came off sincere enough to please me. It's difficult to find fault with a place that claims to date back one hundred years and to have been operated under the same family ownership since 1948, as that makes it about as close as you can get to being a local institution of sorts.
(3)George S.
Best thing this place could do, is bulldoze the current location ( Dothans oldest and most outdated restaurant) change the cooking style of this " BBQ ". I cannot believe it is called food. I would feel bad giving this stuff to a malnourished animal. It does not have a very nice feeling when you first walk in and to top off the " Yawn " factor, the food again... is bad.
(1)E P.
Descent BBQ but far, far from living up to its reputation.

Dobb's is a down home "hole in the wall" dining experience. It has a long history in the area so clearly there are many who enjoy the food. I went because a good friend of mine, who is from the area, remembers the place fondly from the days she used to eat meat. As for my experience I give it a 3 out of 5. The decor and service were charming for its simplicity and genuineness. I ordered the rib dish with a side of baked beans. The ribs were topped with a sweet and tangy vinegar sauce which I enjoyed. The meat was very soft and truly "fell off the bone". This was a dish that relied heavily on the sauce but thankfully I enjoyed the sauce. The beans were very good. Again it was the sauce that made it sing and I'm a fan of Dobb's barbecue sauce. So for me the place works and I'd return if I were in the area. But I'm not giving it more than 3 stars because of the decor and because I prefer my ribs be singed on top and the sauce more baked in. But it was a tasty meal and I'd recommend others check it out as a charming local barbecue spot.

This was the worst BBQ I've ate in last 30 BBQ restaurants . Meat wasn't tender and had a after taste. Thirty minutes after meal got sick.
(1)Linda R.
We were very dissapointed. Did not like the camp stew and the bbq was mediocre at best. Will not stop there again.

Took a long weekend and drove to Greenville, Mississippi from Tampa for Mother's Day so my buddy could see his ailin' Mama... I was hoping for three things--- Fried Chicken, Soul Food, and Barbecue... The first BBQ place we stopped at was Dobb's... The service couldn't have been sweeter or more attentive, and the tall brunette woman (manager/owner?) was downright captivating... My friend got the sliced pork sandwich and I got the ribs ---- both with fries and cole slaw which were generic... The tomato-tangy barbecue sauce was startling and it seemed my ribs were braised in the stuff till they fell apart... Braised ribs like I was at a hospital cafeteria... The meat flaked diagonally and slid off the bone like it was grouper. Hard to describe... Exploring my taste buds for evidence that these ribs ever saw a smoker, all I detected was a mild staleness, as if the ribs were cooked days before and refrigerated, only to be simmered in sauce, and thrown on a plate... I was shocked... The pork sandwich was good my buddy said, but when he offered me a piece all I could taste was that concentrated sauce... The mild, near flavorless sliced pork was lost... Love is my message, and I know it's probably family---- but that kitchen needs a new pitmaster/cook... Sorry... Seems my route and limited time on this trip didn't get me any of the things on my wishlist... We stopped at Dreamland in Tuscaloosa and the ribs were better, but didn't do much for me... They also came drenched in sauce (not braised) with not much flavor or character of their own--- with more sauce on the side... I got pics--- I need to figger out how to post them...

We had camp stew and pulled pork barbeque--delicious! Service was great, too. Overall, a wonderful experience, and affordably priced, too--I

Was out of town on a camping trip with the wife, daughter and her boyfriend in Florida near the Georgia state line. Well during our excursion we drove into Alabama so we were hungry and decided the stop. We saw a billboard for Dobb's BBQ so we decided to try there. Upon arriving you can see is was a small place but very homey. We sat down and was greeted with that Southern charm. We were looking over the menu and saw Campfire Stew listed. My daughter was not sure what would be in it. The wife and I explained it was probably like HOBO stew (a little bit of everything). When the waitress came back with our drinks we asked about the Campfire Stew. She explained but it wasn't clicking with my daughter so the waitress brought out a sample of the stew for us all to try. OMG!!!! The was the best stew I ever ate. We were all in heaven. We ended up not ordering it for lunch. Instead we ordered a gallon to go back with us. Yes it was that good. So I ordered the combo plate for lunch. It was delicious. The ribs were tender as well as the sliced pork. The fries had the right amount of rigidity but softness on the inside. I could not say one bad thing about this place. So if you are ever in the area this is a must for you to stop and try it out. I wonder if the Stew can be shipped??? Yes really it was that good.

I like bbq. I like to try new bbq places. No telling how many bbq places I've been to throughout the South, but Dobbs is the absolute worst excuse for bbq I've ever put in my mouth. There are several gas stations down the road. Stop at one and get a pack of cheese crackers and a Coke instead. Thank me later.
(1)Susan T.
Old school BBQ! Delicious smoky flavor...had chipped pork large sandwich...yummy! The fries were crispy but creamy inside! Hot sauce was brought with meal...vinegary type with nice flavor but I added the homemade hot sauce too! Service was sweet and friendly! I liked the tea pitchers left on the table so I could do my 1/4 sweet 3/4 unsweet combo! Family friendly and quick!
(4)Sylvan F.
Came very high.y recommended. Service was very good and helpful with the menu. They let us sample the stew and it was outstanding, the pork was also very flavorful and had a great smoky taste. Unfortunately the ribs tasted like they had been reheated several times and were very tough to eat.
(4)Christopher G.
I really wanted this place to be a 4 star place, but at the end of my meal it just didn't add up. I ordered pull pork, and my wife had the ribs. Here ribs were really good, but the pulled pork tasted really good at first, and the more I ate the more I disliked it. Before our meal came out they gave me a cup of stew, that was amazing. I give the stew 4 stars. I would go back just for the stew. I also had a slice of pecan pie and ice cream that was really good.
(3)Scott W.
Dobbs was very busy when we went so it took some time to get our food. The quality of the food was great, however: the quantity was lacking. I would go again.
(3)Acman P.
Sauce was too tomatoey for me and the BBQ was stacked a bit too thinly. Needs more spice IMHO.
(2)Eric E.
I'm surprised by the reviews I've read here, but maybe my experience is the exception rather than the norm. My wife enjoyed her pork chipped sandwich and I tried the sampler with all the meats. The chipped pork is definitely their best meat. The ribs were tender and flavorful, but a little small (that may be because they came with the sampler). The chip beef was pretty good, but I've had better. It was too fatty. The chicken had a delicious smokiness. The chicken was a little dry, but I've had much worse and I'd rate it acceptable. What I really liked was their house hot sauce. Adding this to their bbq sauce kicked it up a few notches and made up for its heavy ketchup base. I know Dobb's is a hundred years old and perhaps they haven't changed a thing, but they could really use a couple more sauce options. Once again adding the hot sauce made a decent sauce very good. My 3 and 5 year old boys had a corn dog and a hamburger. They both liked what they ordered and my 3 year old who usually only eats the hotdog if it is of better quality ate almost the entire thing. My family would return.
