My husband and I worked together at Simp's when we first started dating 20 years ago. The food is as spectacular as always.

The food was good... not great. The pie was amazing. The ambience is awesome, beautiful building, great details, wonderful music. The service was aweful. We were seated promptly by the host but it took over 5 mins for our drink orders to be taken (close to 10 minutes). The host chatted at the bar the whole time. At a minimum, he could have taken our drink order. TEAM!!! However the delay in service did not resolved once we were waited on. Decent food. Poor service. Great atmosphere. Would I eat here again? Probably not.

I love this gem in the middle of the historic district. We took my daughter and her family here, including my almost 2 year old granddaughter, and it was great. Our server, Andrew, was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. As a seasoned server, he was intimately aware of the menu, made great recommendations and answered questions honestly and thoughtfully. We had a gluten free guest in our group and they were very accommodating. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees, including the fish tacos, the oven roasted duck, the pasta Alfredo and my personal favorite of the evening, the bone in pork chop. All were prepared perfectly, not an easy feat for the duck and pork chop, and served promptly and hot. I will continue to visit this great restaurant, a former brothel, back in the day, every time I'm in town and I highly suggest you do, as well.

R cotney ... It not fine dining .. there entrees are the worst looking and tasting ( didn't eat much) ! Dry salty and not worth the price .. Does not have steak sauce ,that's fine if you have a well seasond not dryed out piece of meat ,be it the pork roast or filet mignon the d let was well done. It looked like a incinerated chunk of meat . Even the grilled asparagus was charred beyond eatable.. over service was also very poor . The band sounded good though .. not a fine dining place..

Very good food overall and interesting atmosphere. Well worth a five star. But rating had to be adjusted because of the service. To put it in a nice way would be to say it was very uneven. The only area that was right on was filling our water glasses. Our waiter was mostly invisible and when he came by, it was like a flash. Took over 45 minutes to get our soup and salads and overall it certainly did not deserve an 18% gratuity--we were a party of 10.
(3)Louise B.
In the center of the historic district this restaurant and bar fits right in. The food is a little pricey but the quality and selection are outstanding. The $5 cup of gumbo was worth every penny and the Crystal Shrimp was a gourmet delight.
(4)Phil A.
Ordered based on recommendations and had the fried green beans which were delicious, as a main course I had the roasted salmon, separately the salmon was deliciously prepared and the spinach in a berry vinaigrette was delicious as well, I didn't like the combination but that's just me and individually very good. Service and atmosphere were good, I would highly recommended.

My first experience at Simp Mcghees was during third Friday downtown. The atmosphere there is great with the location inside of an old downtown building and a big beautiful bar downstairs. They have outdoor seating as well as two stories of seating indoors. We ate inside on the second story with a view of Bank Street down below. The only thing I think that could make the décor better would be if they removed the white paper that they use over the top of the tablecloths. I understand it makes cleanup simple and practical, but it really cheapens the look of the table setting. I started with the drink special for the night- Peach Bourbon Sweet Tea. It was so good! It was just the right amount of peach flavored and not overly sweet. My husband, Cody, and I shared the crawfish egg roll appetizer and I had a house salad while he had a bowl of gumbo. The crawfish egg rolls were fantastic and came with a sweet Asian dipping sauce. They were crispy and had that traditional egg roll taste with the surprise flavor of crawfish. I was very impressed with this creative dish. The house salad was good, but Cody's gumbo left a little to be desired. It wasn't very flavorful and just didn't have the punch that good traditional gumbo has. Even our waitress admitted that true gumbo lovers find the dish a little bland. The menu had a lot of great choices for the main course, but Cody and I both settled on shrimp pasta dishes. I had the "Shrimp Garcia" which the menu describes as "gulf shrimp in roasted garlic cream sauce with fresh tomato and basil over penne pasta." This was the perfect creamy pasta dish. The pasta was cooked perfectly, not too firm, and that cream sauce was to die for! I was really impressed with this dish and its fantastic flavor! Cody got the "Shrimp Ridgeway" which is "gulf shrimp, smoked sausage, caramelized onions in four cheese cream sauce over penne pasta." Cody really enjoyed it and loved the Cajun-style pasta flavor. I had a bite and the sauce had a little too much of the sausage flavor for me, but I'm not a big smoked sausage eater to begin with. After those filling pasta dishes, Cody and I were STUFFED! But of course there is always room for dessert. :) We decided to share the derby pie and I'm so glad we did. I have never had derby pie before and it was amazing! This traditional dessert is a chocolate walnut pie that has a consistency similar to a brownie. It was perfectly crispy and went great with the vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauce. This dessert is truly heavenly and I can't wait to go back and have it again!!

Love eating here. Lots of great dishes. I always order the mushroom caps with every meal. Even though they have a wonderful entre menu, they have a tapas menu as well with the best fish tacos around. Downstairs has a good vibe with local artists and classic old school bar with upstairs feeling a little more upscale. Trust me, You will enjoy this place

So, I am a business owner and have visited this restaurant several times. Sometimes it can be a little loud. However, the food makes up for all of that. I use this place as an ole stand by when I have a client or two come to town. Last night was no exception. The service was great, the food was extremely good and we left very happy. We had apps, salads, entrees & drinks. The only problem was we had no room for dessert. Nice portions, very tasty and quite reasonable. I'll be back!

Decided to host my husbands 70th birthday party at SIMP'S...it was the best decision I have made in a long time. There were 11 guests and the food could not have been better! Everyone loved their meals (thanks to our waitress, Whitney) the wine was perfect and the setting was all we could have asked for! We have always had wonderful food at this restaurant and it has turned into our favorite dining place in Decatur. Wonderful ambiance, great wine list but the food...simply amazing!!!

Worst steak I ever had tuff as shoe leather.. This place has no idea how to cook steak.. No one ever ask how my half eaten steak was... Really save you money.. Go fast food.. It's all over Alabama...lol

My husband and I had a tasty dinner with love music. We love the ambiance, but our meal took quite a bit of time to arrive.

Simp McGhee's is Decatur's long-standing home for fine dining. If you're in our small town and feel like you want to get the Southern Hospitality that you deserve, a visit at Simp's is what you need. Whether it's in their downstairs casual dining space or upstairs for a more intimate experience, the fine folks at Simp's will certainly make sure you have a wonderful evening.
(5)Paul L.
The braised duck was delicious and so were the clams in broth with pork belly. Was surprised to find this hidden gem in Decatur, AL....while on business travel there.
(4)Tammy C.
Service was good....but they have changed the menu. They no longer have my favorite pork medallions (which were excellent). I opted for the Tapas menu steak medallion. It was very tender and cooked exactly the way I ordered it. But I didn't enjoy Simp's as much as I have in the past. I would say it was no better than a chain restaurant. Probably won't make a point to return.
(2)C M.
Based on food quality alone the restaurant is pretty good. We weren't crazy about the seafood gumbo but house salad dressing was excellent. The crab cakes were good. The burger was pretty good but left a burnt after-taste. The spit fire shrimp tasted good but you only get popcorn shrimp. The reason they get 2 stars instead of maybe 3.5 is because they are OVERPRICED. Listed as a $$ but should be a $$$$. Most Entrees are $20+ and some don't come with a vegetable so that's extra. They have a small portion menu called Tapas for items around $10 but you'd need 2 of those to make a meal.
(2)Bo D.
Maybe it's because I don't actually live in Alabama and was just passing by, but I didn't find this place overpriced. Everything I ordered was delicious, especially the thing made with apples (sorry, can't remember what it was called but it comes as a side with the pork chop).

My husband and I live in Decatur and eat out often. We decided instead of driving to Madison/Huntsville to a nice upscale restaurant, we would try Sim McGhee's. We went right after moving here and was not impressed at that time (10 yrs ago), but decided to give them another try last night. We were seated right away. Waitress was very sweet and attentative. The food however was another matter. When the waitress brought our order, she immediately asked me to check if my dish was over cooked and it was. Not only that it was not even hot. Of course she took it back, but in the mean time, my husband also had his (fish) which was also very dry. With two dinner's, a glass of wine each and one side dish our bill came to over $85.00 plus tip of $20.00. We don't mind paying this amount if the food was prepared properly. They need to get an experienced CHEF and not a line cook as anyone could have prepared our dishes and one that knows how to prepared a medium rare steak. Needless to say we will not be going back there again, even if it is 10 yrs later once again. Wanda M Trinity, AL

This is my favorite restaurant in north Alabama. I've been here several times over the years and was excited to return. It did not disappoint. We had the Roasted Salmon over fresh spinach, dried cranberries, Alabama goat cheese, & raspberry vinaigrette, topped with toasted pine nuts and the Jenny Lind's Catch which is pan seared fresh catch with roasted garlic cream, jumbo lump crab, & cherry tomatoes - both were teriffic. For a bonus, Wednesday's are $5 wine night, so we had that going for us.

If by some crazy coincidence one ends up in Decatur, AL it would be unforgivable to miss the splendor of Southern hospitality at Simp McGee's. Chef Dean is a trooper, whipping up delightful treats such as fried green beans with horseradish dipping sauce. Don't miss the gumbo, shrimp martini (over grits), stuffed mushrooms, or prime rib. The owner was more than helpful with a small catering order we had for our business meeting the next day. She showed up bright and early at 9:00AM, enlisting her team to fill our every request with a smile, in spite of the fact they are not open for business until 5:30 PM. Simp McGee's is a culinary shining star....go!!!

I think we probably found one of the most expensive restaurants in Decatur for this dinner outing! But after a $14 fillet most places would seem expensive. Simp McGhee's is in the Old Decatur downtown area along a pretty quiet street lined with brick buildings. The restaurant itself was two stories; the first floor was warm and inviting, with big bay windows on either side of the door and a well-stocked bar along half of the room. The second floor was a bit dressier, with hanging soft lights and white linens. There were lots of old pictures decorating the walls. A group of 6 of us came in without reservations - not a problem - and were seated immediately in one of the tables framed by a bay window. The waiter was very friendly, coming over to take our drink order and asking straight off if we wanted to get separate checks. I really appreciate this more and more as I travel for business and am always impressed when servers consider it before anyone in our party asks about it. The menu is full of seafood and meat selections, so I wouldn't recommend it for a vegetarian, and they have a fresh fish daily. The evening we went it was an amber-jack (a type of yellow tail I think). I was stuck trying to decide between the Shrimp Garcia, a jumbo shrimp dish in garlic cream sauce with rigatoni pasta, and the Roasted Salmon, s plate of spinach, Alabama goat cheese, cranberries and salmon. I ended up getting the shrimp, which was quite rich and creamy. A a couple of our party got the roasted salmon and it looked delicious. Definitely what I'm getting next time! All of the dinners came with a field greens salad and the waiter recommended the house salad dressing -- a buttermilk ranch base (I think) with feta cheese. I am so glad that I took his suggestion! The dressing was AMAZING and one of the best I've ever had. A great alternative to the chain restaurants in Decatur and a place I'm sure I'll visit again when I'm back.

I had a great dinner here with my girlfriend last Saturday night. The place was pretty dead because of the game and I really wanted to watch it but I wanted to go out with my lady for a nice evening too. This place was perfect a fine dinning atmosphere with a large TV. in the back where I could catch a score without being absorbed in the game. The food and staff were excellent and I was impressed, especially for Decatur. It is a little pricey but it was worth every penny. I am a big fan of Pauli's in Madison but I hate the weekend traffic with a passion, so when I don't want to fight it I'll be heading to Simp McGhee's to get a great dinning experience.
(5)JR B.
What a neat place. The food was delicious and you have a choice of atmospheres. Upstairs is white linen dining and downstairs is the comfortable bar scene. Both serve the same great food. We liked the salmon and added a nice white wine. We went on a Wednesday and Monday and wished there was more activity, but hey, it's Decatur. Overall, a great place to eat in North Alabama.
(4)Kat J.
Went here last night with my husband and his family. The place does have a nice ambiance and the staff is polite and friendly. They even have a half decent wine list which they are willing to let you taste a sip before committing. We shared the gumbo as our app and it was pretty darn tasty. Not too overpowering and most importantly, not too salty. Their bread basket comes out warm which is a plus and the bread is fluffy in the middle with a nice crisp crust. So far, we're happy. For my entree, I ordered the duck breast which was well cooked but the sauce it came in was a little too sweet and the spinach was doused in it so I could barely eat it. I tasted my husband's crab cake and it was pretty tasty. Tender in the middle with a crunchy crust. The veggies that came with his crab cakes however were too salty from the super salty andouille sausage. All the entrees came with a tiny side salad (10 leaves of baby lettuce, one tomato) but the dressings were superb. I loved the honey mustard one. We also got a choice of a side and I got the sweet potato fries which were well cooked but with no salt (which is fine cause I can salt them to taste at the table). However, the fresh veggie of the day was listed by our server as one of the side options when she told us we had a choice of four of them and 4 of us got the broccoli. Then, when we got our bill, we got charged $4 per veggie side - the server failed to mention that the fresh veggie was extra!!! That is SO annoying and really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I hate it when they sneak in charges like that. SO overall, the food was good with the exception of the sides that came with our entrees. Too sweet sauce on mine, too salty sausage on my hubby's dish and the fresh broccoli was overcooked - it would fall apart when you'd try to pick it up with a fork. Also, the sneaked in charges for the side dishes really made me angry. I'd give them 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up as the server really made an effort to be professional and friendly. I'm hoping she just forgot to mention the extra charge or assumed we all somehow new.
