Excellent Indian food - the best you will get in the Birmingham area ! The owners (ask for Kishore) are very helpful and give you personal attention. Wednesday night buffet is excellent and very affordable. Lot of variety and flavorful food. This easily beats all the other Indian places like Sitar, Taj India and Kebab and curry. They always have a Bollywood movie or cricket playing which adds to the whole Indian atmosphere.

This review after sampling all 4 Indian food joints in Bham. I have learnt it the hard way. Say after me, A review on an Native restaurant by a non-native can be biased. :) People, many Indians eating at a place is not an indicator of the quality of the food. Many of them are just there because they probably had no place else to go. Seriously, a person who hasn't eaten a lot of the respective Native food would never be able to 'judge' the food really. First off, they had way little spread for a vegetarian. Second at 12 dollars for a noon buffet on a Sunday its way too ridiculously priced. I cook my own food everyday and like to eat out occasionally. But whenever I do, I expect it to taste better than how I make it. The food here, was stale. I am used to refrigerating my own food and eating it over a spread of 24 to 30 hours, so I know what stale is. The waiter was weird. I knew he was off his senses when one of the customers sitting next to us asked him if the pan cake (pessarattu, made from rice basically) was vegetarian and he said he will have to check with the chef. What are you, dumb ? Any Indian, irrespective of faking an American accent, is supposed to know that a dosa/pessarattu is vegetarian ! Again, I went to a place where the Native food was cooked for the non Native taste buds :( .. I am yet to stumble on a decent Native Indian food joint (discounting Sitar, for which am writing my next review).

Great authentic favors and food. I favorite Indian restaurant thus far in Bham, when it comes to taste, and I've been to all the places downtown.

By far the best Indian food in Birmingham. Every time we go the food is great and the service is exceptional.

Go with your Indian friends if you have no clue. If you don't have any you're probably still going to enjoy the food. I'm told this is more along the lines of authentic south indian flavor/style. I've enjoyed both their lunch buffet and main course dinner services. The appetizers, entrees, and naan bread are full of flavor and compliment each other. It's a perfect set up for sharing multiple meals amongst a party of friends to better grasp all of the styles and flavors. A definite must try for indian food in Bham.

I've been to just about every Indian restaurant in Birmingham and this is by far my favorite. Doesn't mean I won't go to the others but if I have a choice, I'd go to Silver Coin.

This place is the bomb. It really opened my eyes to how great Indian food can taste. I can never remember what I order until I look at the menu again but the depth of flavor always astounds me. Belly dancing wha whaaaa?! Awesome. The guy who runs the cash register (owner?) is hilarious.

So get this. I was waiting for my takeout order and decided to make conversation by asking about Hindi books. I figured I could always use another book to help study. The owner's son actually stopped what he was doing and called a couple of places to see if they had any books for me. He even took my number and said he would give me a call if he found any. A few days later he actually called and said he found someone that had some books for me. Later that day I had my new books and a new friend. How awesome is that? PS, the food was good too.

You know something's bound to be right when you see a lot of South Asians eating here. Had the lunch buffet on a Saturday. I dock it one point because they have far fewer selections than Sitar for the buffet. The unique dishes were the vada sambar and goat curry this time around. The goat curry was a bit gamey as well as bony, but everything else was pretty nice. The manager likes to mix it up on weekends so you might be pleasantly surprised. Was about $13 with drink.

Worst experience in Birmingham, al.... Wasted good money by lunching at silver coin today! What should have been at worst an ordinary experience turned out to be a disaster. We walked in for lunch and were hastily shown a table. I requested another table because the one the server showed us was right in front of the buffet spread. The sour, rude and obnoxious white-haired white woman server refused saying we will be closing the place and so we have to set the tables. Excuse me??I have just walked in, you welcomed me, the sign outside says the place is open and I am going to pay for a meal. What customer service!! The place was practically empty with only a group of five seated at another table. We ordered masala dosa. BIG MISTAKE. It was cold when it came to our table. The accompanying sambhar and chutney were leftovers from the buffet lunch scraped off the buffet spread right in front of us. Ladies and gentlemen, beware a silver coin experience is all about leftovers and rude customer service. The sambhar portions were tiny and only had vegetables, no curry. We requested some to go with our dosas and were informed that there wasn't anymore. Our waitress never bothered to come and check if we need water or anything else. Masala Dosa itself was a sorry mess. The filling was pathetic, tasteless, soggy goo. Nightmarish experience! I took one look at it and my appetite did a disappearing act. It would have been an excruciating punishment to attempt to eat that. We paid for the worst meal ever and vowed to never come back. It is the worst place in Birmingham. If you wish to sample Indian food, Sitar, taj India, mugal cuisine serve better and know a thing or two about customer service unlike the nightmare silver coin Indian grill. Stay away people, hopefully that will put them out of business and that will indeed be a favor to humanity and the people of birmingham.

Silver Coin has the best Indian food in B'ham. I found this place 5 years ago and very quickly became a regular. We moved to Kentucky about a year ago, but every time I get to go back home, this is the first place I eat. The staff is very kind and will do anything for you. I was leading a trip to India a few years ago and brought my team here to eat. The owners came in and went over different customs and things we would come into contact while over there. They even explained Cricket to us. The food is wonderful. They would always make mine as hot as humanly possible, after they saw that I could take it. Great place, great people, great food.

Excellent food. Service can sometimes be slow depending on your luck with the server. Loved the buffet, and the naan is fresh! The vegeterian options are plenty and delicious. There's usually a Bollywood film playing on a plasma tv so you can watch while you eat. Fun. They have a kids menu with traditional kiddie fare like chicken fingers for little ones who can't tolerate spicy foods. Definitely the best Indian food in Birmingham.

  • Alan B.

The best Indian cuisine in Birmingham, hands down. Their Paneer Tikki Masala and Bengan Barta are truly awesome! And you have to try their garlic naan it is way too good. It will put you in a carb coma you will want to eat so much. Wow so so good! I consistently travel over thirty miles one way just to eat here. Wonderful wait staff, wonderful food.

  • Melissa C.

Their bhindi masala and chicken dishes are pretty good, but I'm not really a fan of their naan or their lassis. I think my problem with this place is that I feel it didn't really live up to all the hype. For a Birmingham restaurant I'm sure it is probably a 4ish maybe a 4.5. But I've had so much good homemade Indian food and gone to some good places in larger cities (DC/LA) that this place is just ok for me.

    (3)
  • Lauren B.

THE BEST Indian food in Birmingham. Buffet at lunch. If you want Indian food- go here. Average pricing and the freshest naan I've ever had. The staff is kind and excited to be there (so it seems).

I've only been once, but I ordered take-out and a manager was super friendly. He was really helpful in pointing out what was in each item, and making sure my order came out without any ghee. Many items can be made vegan. The food was really good, and only a teeny bit expensive. I think they may close earlier than other restaurants, so check their times.

Silver Dollar has a nice atmosphere with large mirrors on the wall and Ballywood type music playing overhead and Indian Music Videos on TV. There was also a display case up front with different traditional Indian clothes for sale. Definitely a plus! The menu is extensive with a LOT of choices, including vegetarian, fish curry, lamb, and goat. The naan was surprisingly doughy. If you are in Birmingham and in the mood for some Indian food, this place is definitely a great contender. However, if you are from out of town ( ie Montgomery), I do not think you need to drive that far as the local India Palace at Montgomery can give Silver Dollar a run for its money.

This is the best indian restaurant in the Birmingham area. Not only does it serve north indian food but also south indian food and indochine cuisine. The menu is extensive and everything is wonderful. The buffet is also excellent with many vegetarian dishes and also meat dishes including goat. We often come here with our friends and a bottle or 2 of white wine. We never leave disappointed!

Only a few blocks away from the Riverchase Galleria, Silver Coin Indian Grill is a very good option for vegetarian fare in Birmingham. Even if you usually find Indian food to be too spicy, they offer all of their dishes in varying degrees of spiciness, allowing you to enjoy their food as mild (or monstrously spicy) as you prefer. This flexibility is welcome, as is their incredibly diverse menu. The meatless dishes are fantastic, and if you want meat, you can choose from chicken, beef, seafood, or even lamb. Particularly noteworthy are the various "dosa" dishes on the menu. Dosa is a traditional lentil-based dish that, surprisingly, is not available in many of Alabama's other Indian restaurants, so I was pleased to see how many dosa options were available at Silver Coin. So, why four stars and not five? It certainly wasn't the service: Our waitress, Eva, was as kind and patient as any patron could hope to find. No, Silver Coin is just short of top marks on account of their naan. Take a standard naan dough, cook it on a super-hot oven -- like the side of a giant iron pot, or on a grill-- and you'll get the crisp, puffy naan that Indian foodies have so come to love. The naan at Silver Coin is neither crisp nor puffy, but is instead doughy, like a biscuit. I suspect their oven isn't hot enough, but that's just speculation. It's only a single disappointment from an otherwise excellent restaurant, but to me, good naan is so integral to any Indian dining experience that it really does bear mentioning.

This cheerful and tasteful restaurnat in Hoover serves up Indian specialties from both the north and south of India. The staff was extremely friendly and gave us a wonderful history of indian cinema and Bollywood..They were very patient in explaining all the types of food and , with their questions, were able to steer us into perfect dishes...I had chicken vindaloo, which was quite spicy (as i had ordered it). Make sure and try their Indian ice creams to counterbalance any of the remaining spice..A great meal, with wonderful Indian Beer (king fisher) . A great time.

It is great to have more ethic dining options in Hoover. I have had lunch at Silver Coin on several occasions. They serve a lunch buffet of traditional Indian dishes. On each visit I have observed that many of the customers are of Indian ethnicity. This is a good sign; either the food is authentic or at least it meets their dining approval. In any case, my Western sense of taste enjoyed everything I tried. I liked the buffet option because you can sample a variety of Indian dishes (I wouldn't otherwise have a clue to order).

This is a good place for East Indian cuisine. The service is great and the food is generally delicious. You can customize the degree of hotness & spice. One of the best Indian eateries in Alabama. Definitely recommend this place.

Extremely polite staff. Nice place. They even have halaal food options too (for Muslims) Food is good. Even if you love spicy food, don't order extra spicy because you won't be able to handle it. Trust me :D

Not usually a regular when it comes to Indian cuisine, but we were in the area and hungry so we thought we would give it a try. Plus, we had our dog with us and the owner graciously allowed us to eat on the patio with puppy. We shared the tandoori platter served with delicious Basmati rice. Liked the mint chicken, tandoori chicken and lamb. Superior service. If you are in the mood for some Indian food, check this place out.

This was my first venture into Indian food. Friends took me here. It was really, really good. We showed up before the typical lunch crowd, probably, 11:30ish. It definitely passes for "authentic." The atmosphere was an enjoyable cultural experience. I was happy to find plenty of healthy options from the buffet (the main reason I was interested in Indian food), ranging from spicy to not so spicy. It was around $8 for a really good buffet, and I ended up rounding up the tip to $10 because the service was very prompt and friendly. I'm already looking forward to eating here again.

Incredible experience...they normally close at 10pm on Fridays and we weren't able to arrive until @ 9:20. Instead of being hurried through etc, we were treated like royalty! hee hee Warm, friendly, professional, helpful service..best waitress ever! The food? Let's just say I live 2 hours away..and Silver Coin will now be on my monthly 'to do' list! Everything was delicious! And the naan is fabulous! I'm glad I downloaded yelp...great tool for finding terrific places!

Been eating at this place since almost 9 years now. Just after a few weeks of its opening. Love their veg biryani. Best Biryani I ate anywhere outside my home town in India. The malai kofta and paper masala dosa are awesome too. Good portions Consistent Taste Reasonable price Good service We get a to-go from here every Friday!

I rarely go out to eat indian, but Silver Coin gave me a good experience overall. Their flavors were delish from the chutneys to the naan. I'm a sucker for naan. The roti was crisped up however, and I"m used to the soft and chewy kind. That was the only drawback for me.

This place is my absolute favorite Indian spot in Birmingham. I've been eating here for about 2 years now after being invited by a friend. The quality of the food is amazing. Everything tastes fresh to order, and presented with care. When I go to a restaurant and the food comes out in 5 minutes, I'm very wary of the dish's freshness. The silver coin always brings the food out at just the right time! The lighting and general mood of the place is perfect. It's not fancy, but not too casual. They have a tv in the dining area playing Bollywood classics. I bring out-of-town family here for a unique experience. My favorite dish is the Lamb Karahi Gosht. I get it extra spicy (it makes me turn red and cry). I also regularly order the Tandoori Roti... It's fantastic! I've been to every Birmingham Indian spot that I know. They are all really great from my experience. However, the silver coin shines above the rest.

Tried the Chef's speciality : the Silver Coin Mixed Platter that contain Tandoori chicken, mint chicken tikka, lamb chop, tandoori prawns and fish tikka. And cheken taka masala. Also we ordered the cheese garlic naan. My review the lamb tastes better than the chekien n fish. Service is excellent and food generally taste very good.

I had such high hopes for this place. Unfortunately the food was overcooked and bland. The service was slow and unresponsive. Would not recommend this place to anyone who seriously enjoys Indian cuisine.

  • Caleigh R.

Went for lunch on Friday and I was really disappointed in their buffet. They had only a few dishes to pick from--one was chicken tikka masala, another was detailed as "dry vegetables" (oh that sounds delicious.....), black eyed peas, and tandoor chicken. There was another I think, but honestly, I just wasn't impressed. Compared to the other indian restaurants in Birmingham and the setup they offer for lunch buffets, you're making a mistake to come to Silver Coin. It's been a long time since we've been to S.C. so we wanted to give it a try, but it's really gone downhill. They'll need to make some changes if they want to compete with the big boys! I did give two stars because the ladies who were working were very sweet and helpful. They also gave us more naan than I could've asked for.

For anyone who wants the taste of the motherland, Silver Coin Indian Grill is that gateway from the moment you enter this restaurant's fancy doors to the dreamy food coma you slip into by the time you leave. You are greeted by creepy mannequins and a waiting area perfect for your children who can't sit still. A little past the waiting area is a little boutique to your right in case your lady wants some big jewelry to take home with her. The masala grilled fish was delicious. It consists of fish marinated with special spices and delicately pan-fried, all served on a bed of sauteed onion, garlic and spinach. Although I was warned it was a medium-level of spicy, I can handle it. I cannot handle most spicy foods but this took only half a glass of water. The basmati rice goes perfectly with this combination. I'm trying to find a reason to give this place a lower rating. I guess I'm not picky enough.

  • J M.

Fresh quality food, great service, and decent atmosphere at pretty standard prices for an Indian restaurant. Only complaint is the location and that I've had slightly better Indian food elsewhere. Also, the mild versions of the dishes are still pretty spicy compared to some other places.

  • Laura M.

I go for the lunch buffet, and its so yummy! Definitely authentic Indian food. Healthy choices, and always lots of fruit for my kiddos. They're so friendly. It was my husbands first venture into Indian cuisine, and the waitress went above and beyond, explaining how spicy each item was, and giving him a lesson in culture. That was really cool of her! Its decorated really fun, too!

Wow! This restaurant is really good. Its in a strange strip mall, but their food is amazing and their customer service is great. I loved the layout of their menu and the choices it has. Hands down one of the top Indian restaurants I have been to.

Chicken Tikka and chicken tandoori is amazing. Def get one of those dishes. My and my husband are quickly becoming regulars. Best India food in Birmingham. Service is great. Everyone is so nice. If you don't know what to order, just ask and they will help you. Go try this place out!

If you like Indian food (spiced with any spice known to human beings) then you found your place. Very good Indian food. I set my bar for Indian food after eating in Little India in Singapore, but for American Indian this place scores very high. Service is professional and very greeting. Drink selection is pretty poor but they still offer a reasonable selection of beers and wines. Ambiance is the week spot here. Outdated style, poor care for the outlook of the place. Great place where to eat at at a convenient price

I had heard great things about Silver Coin being more authentic than Sitar. I gave it a try. They give you this Indian bread called nan. It is one of the most amazing things I've ever had, and I'm not much of a bread person. The waitress only gave me and my friends a little bit of it....and my friend ate half of mine because I'm nice and I let her. She was giving the other tables baskets after baskets of it cause she thought their children were cute. The other food that was there was okay, seemed kind of cold and had been sitting out there for a while. if it weren't for the waittress and temperature of food, i would have given four stars. Maybe next time if I go :)

I went to Silver Coin with my friend who is in the US for school, but he's from and is a citizen of India. He said this was the most authentic India food he'd had so far. We went on a Sunday and there was a buffet. I don't know if there's always a buffet, but there is on Sunday. I'm not usually a fan of buffet-style restaurants, but it was clean looking and it gave me a chance to try a lot of different Indian food. Everything that I tried was really good (albeit, spicy), but the funniest part of the meal was when the server came to clear our plates and asked where we were from. My husband and I said we were from 'here' and we pointed to our friend and he said he was from India. We asked if she was born in India, and she said, "No, I'm Mexican, I'm from Mexico." Straight face. No joke. We all got a good laugh out of that, and it just shows how much a melting pot our great city really is. I would definitely go back to Silver Coin, but my pallet may have to get more acquainted with the spicier foods first.

I arrived about 7PM on a Thursday night. The place wasn't crowded, but I had to wait more than 5 minutes for the greeter to just get herself together. The atmosphere is utilitarian--not fancy at all. I was seated and had to wait for my water until my friend arrived. The waitress was fairly attentive once we were seated. We were given something like tortilla chips before anything started, and it was good. My friend had a mango lassi, which she reports was very good. We ordered the Masala Dosa and the Veggie Korma. Neither had any really distinctive taste. The amount of filling in the Masala Dosa seemed less than expected and it came in a triangle shape. There was food left over however, enough for a small second meal. The meal was affordable at about $11 per person. In sum, the food was boring but affordable. I suspect there are better Indian restaurants in the Birmingham area.

It's not India... but it's close... I've really enjoyed everything I've had here, and it is the best Indian food in Birmingham (really all of North Alabama).

Great little spot... The food was awesome, I had the Spicy Karahai Gosht. Just ask for it by saying #49 from menu. Next visit will be for the lunch buffet.

Always but always the best! The depth of flavors amazes me every time. The onion spinach pakora appetizer is a favorite of mine. As is the gobi manchurian. The Mali kofta entree is worth the drive across town (while passing two other Indian restaurants in Southside that are good but not as good as Silver Coin)!

    (5)
  • Genny D.

Really good! Service can be a bit spotty but the food is downright amazing. Their chutneys and naan are delicious, and any of their curry. My husband and I loved going here when I was pregnant and we were always content-- although portions can run a bit on the small side.

    (4)
  • Ananya G.

The food is very good and flavorful. I enjoyed the North Indian dishes as well as South Indian on different occasions. The Adai and chutneys were also very flavorful. The methi paneer mutter is the star at this restaurant. Paneer Tikka and Baby corn in appetizers is excellent! Very nice people and service!

  • Sanjeev T.

Food is good. The chicken vindaloo and the naans are fantastic. Saag chicken is not good because the saag was not cooked at all. It was just put in a blender and heated little. The saag always has to be Cooked otherwise it tastes like mud. Hosting is bad. I waited exactly12 minutes to get seated. I don't understand why you cannot let the waiters host if the main owner host is busy. I was about ready to walk away and go to the taste of Thailand. Improve these and you will be a 5 star restaurant, well atleast a four. Food is 4 stars except for saag chicken

My husband and I had our first experience with Indian cuisine, at the lunch buffet on Saturday. We were seated by a friendly hostess, who asked us if we would be enjoying the buffet or, would we like to see a menu. We chose to see the menu, and after the overwhelming choices of unfamiliar items, we decided to go for the buffet and try a little bit of everything. We were pleased with many choices, but underwhelmed by the seasoning. Overall the food was bland. The naan saved the day, it was fantastic. The place was pretty worn, the tables and menus were sticky. I filled up on salad and the tandoori (?) chicken, dry but good flavor. The chutneys were delicious.

Most of the Indian restaurants are a little Americanized so they can accommodate everyone especially who are not in to spicy food. But this restaurant is like an oasis in the middle of the desert. The food is authentic. Samosa chat idli and dosa! I love it!!!

Best Indian restaurant in town! Great dishes and lots of variety. Be sure to try the paper masala dosa - a wonderful version of a traditional Indian street snack - potato and veggies inside a large, wafer thin pancake-style wrap. Two thumbs up!

One of my favourite spots in Hoover- but then, I'm an Indian food fan. The people are always very nice, and the food is always very tasty. My most recent trip was for one of the 283.46 events surrounding a Hindu wedding (which was actually held in South Africa). The staff here handled us very well while still handling regular evening service. The food was divine, and the servers stayed happy and cracked a few jokes about how crowded it was because of us. (It was easy to tell they really did not mind us, and were not genuinely upset at the congestion we created.)

Delicious Indian food! Nice place too. I have been twice and really enjoyed it both times. This last visit my friend and I ordered two dishes we had never had before and were not disappointed. We got the achari gosht (#89) and the the Paper Masala Dosa (can't remember the number but it is in the specialty section). Both were delicious! The 1st sounded strange but the waitress suggested it to us and I am glad I tried it. The 2nd was something my friend had seen ordered before and wanted to try. Just to warn you it is huge! It was fun to order though.

Amazing Indian food! Staff and owner are very friendly and always remember us when we go in. Their garlic naan is very fresh and it is not oily at all. Also, the mango lassi is great!

Silver coin has some off days and some where they quite hit the right note. I have been here multiple times and have a few tried and tested safe orders programmed in my brain. This time though, my wife insisted we try something different so we ordered the chicken biryani and lamb roganjosh. Surprisingly the lamb was tender and delectable, my previous experiences here were all of the hard, flavor less kind. The curry was good but lacked the yogurt needed for the true roganjosh. The biryani however was poor, with too much spice. A good biryani needs to stand out on the basis of its rice flavor, and this one was soggy and had no distinct flavor at all. From previous experience this place has good appetizers like samosa chat, the chicken dishes are good especially the lamb kurma and the dosa / idli are palatable. The lamb was a pleasant surprise again. The biggest problem with this place is bad service. While the servers themselves are helpful (the young kid Skyler was very apologetic abt the wait time), I think the wait comes out of the kitchen time. It's very hard to wait for 30-45 minutes for your food. Most likely though nothing will change since they don't have much competition in this sleepy city. Will go back for lack of better options.

My dad and I were visiting Alabama for a camp, and along the way we are at the Silver coin. If the decor said anything, it couldn't decide between Indian and football decorations. ( I am from Atlanta, so if Alabama restaurants tend to have football decor, excuse me.) The service was ok, but the food was iffy. We are tandoori chicken along with other chicken Curries. The food was not fresh, very stale. Prices are expensive compared to portion. We,since we are Indian, asked for " extra hot", but clearly all the chef did was add more chili powder to the dish. Overall the food and experience was ok, but will get no better than a 2 star review
