Awesome cheeseburger. This is a family owned place and the folks are great! Jr is taking the orders and has an incredible memory. No one writing anything down. Great food worth a try.

A true southern diner experience. Well run, good food, and lively (busy) for a reason.

Ate here earlier today after a good friend said it was a must stop in Birmingham. Took me a few minutes to get up the nerve to actually walk in as the neighborhood around it isn't the nicest in town. Once I walked in I felt right at home though. The owner and his wife were very nice and chatted me up as I ate one of the best burgers I've ever had. Will definitely make a return trip anytime I'm in town.

Best mom and pop joint in Birmingham. Very friendly, great service, most importantly great food! Everything is made from scratch including the sauces and dressings. Looking forward to my next visit. Also very pilot friendly!

The food was awesome , I had eaten here before. However I am sitting at the counter waiting for my lunch and a cockroach just crawled across the counter in front of me. GROSS!!

People are great and the food is great. I've tried the hamburgers, hamburger steak, camel riders and they're all good. Would highly recommend it and try the baklava for dessert.

You cannot beat the service at Sammy's Sandwich Shop. A family run diner with mom and dad running the kitchen while Jr. Is taking care of the tables. His ability to remember everyone's order without taking a note is phenomenal, and drinks never run dry no matter how packed the dining room is. Voted 'Best Burger Around' in 2000 and 2011 by the Birmingham News, the classic cheeseburger is a must order. Make sure to get the grilled onions on top! I will be voting everyday to get the Sammy's burger back in it's rightful spot atop the list in 2014.

I stumbled upon this place for lunch on a Friday. A family ran burger joint, the son running the tables, dad running the grill and a sweet firecracker of a mom quarterbacking and running the place. It's been open for 49 years!!! It's off the beaten path, but worth checking out if you like a good burger place.

The Chicken Rider was awesome. Good seasoned fries too.

Awesome food and great customer service! Conveniently located next to hotels. Better breakfast than the hotels.

Food was good but the wait was a bit long. Service was great. Parking is limited at lunch time. I would come back.

It was pretty awesome. Felt like stepping back in time in the restaurant. Made it all the better.

I knew I'd screwed up before I even finished saying "To go, please." The last time I had seen the expression now on the owner/cook/server/cashier/dishwasher/bookkeeper's face was when I had just told my grandmother "No thanks, I just ate a corn dog." "Sit down, Let me fix you something to eat.", she had said. I bet the look on her face would have been no different if I had slapped her with a corn dog. No doubt about it; he had that corn dog face. I had been warned. I knew going into what appears, to the casual observer, to be a run of the mill sandwich shop. I knew, that this really is one of the last family restaurants in a town that had one in every neighborhood just a few years--decades actually, a few decades ago. Family restaurant, not because they served food family style, or food for families, family as in "Sit down, let me fix you something to eat." Yes, THAT family. True hospitality had caught me unawares. It was so unfamiliar in a restaurant, that it was somewhat disorienting, and just a teeny bit uncomfortable. So don't say that you have'nt been warned. OK, OK --the review: Decor: Formica and florescent, sparkley clean as well. Food: of course, have the cheeseburger. You won't regret it. Do NOT miss the house made baklava. Buy an extra piece in case your cat decides to eat some while you're not looking, as mine did. (I know, WTF??) Service: see above gushing Location: Only 8 minutes from downtown, in historic Woodlawn. A Bohem--- no, that's not the word. Sketchy, I think that may be the word. Dress: Business Casual to Ghetto Fabulous

The other reviews are spot on so I have nothing really more to add. This is the best greasy gut bomb burger in town (in a good way). The fries are nothing special but fine steak fries. The owners are very nice. Note, they do NOT accept credit cards. There is an ATM in the shady store next door but the fee is $2+

I had the cheeseburger. And as much as I like cheeseburgers I am not sure how to distinguish between 4 and 5 stars. But I am giving this place 5 for the combination food, service and because it is my review and I can. This is a small family run place not far from the airport. I was headed out on a flight and my choice was airport food or here. Eat here! The cheeseburger looks like they are taking raw ground beef and pressing them into thick patties themselves. They are at least an inch thick. Not sure how many ounces but 6 or more I bet. They are big. Choice of toppings are the standards lettuce, tomato onion etc. all good stuff. And it tasted very good. No reason to get a burger any place else. Will eat here every time I can when flying. This is your basic burger, not a gourmet place. If that is what you want, go elsewhere. If you just like the basic real deal this is as good as it gets. The service is fast and efficient and at first glance is a bit curt. It is just their way to serve and keep it efficient. The service is friendly with a no nonsense business like attitude. The place does not look like much from the outside and surrounding area. And I almost didn't go in myself. Don't let that stop you. Has a few tables and counter service. Super fast super good.
