In a nutshell, I love the minimal interior design, robust coffee, and friendly staff at Revelator Coffee Company. It reminds me of being back on the West Coast in the Bay Area because of the interior and straightforward yet premium menu offerings. Recently, I had the pleasure to attend a Birmingham Bloggers event at Revelator Coffee Company and was blown away by the outstanding coffee, understated yet beautiful interior design elements, and great customer service. Revelator balances great coffee, service, and creative savvy to make a huge impression to newcomers. I'll be back soon and cannot wait to taste some of the seasonal coffee blends, tea, and baked goods at Revelator as they become available!

Revelator has become my go-to coffee shop. The interior is modern but homey with clean architectural lines and constantly replenished floral arrangements, the staff is professional, knowledgeable and attentive, and the coffee is- very simply- the best in town. Sure, the menu isn't a million miles long and you'll have to look elsewhere for your pumpkin-spice-sugar-high but with coffee this high quality and expertly prepared why would you need anything more than an espresso, a latte or a pour-over?!

For all the fanfare, I have to say we were pretty disappointed. The branding was phenomenal and the architectural details were impeccable. If you were opening a spa! This seems more like a place you would go for a Brazilian wax as opposed to a Brazilian coffee. There was an air of hipster and a bit of standoffishness that made the place seem like a place to be seen as opposed to an environment to be experienced. Certainly not what you expect in Birmingham Alabama. I'm not so certain that it would do well in Brooklyn New York. All of that would've been fine if the coffee was off the charts, but it was not. Good, but not impressive.

I was ready to hate this place. Ultra industrial design. Parking on the street. And I can't disassociate the word "Revelator" from my memories of Son House records. The beans, though. The beans're what did it. They're worth it. Only two varieties were available from what I could tell. Sticking with their minimalistic theme I saw no display of prices or even ounces on the packages. (I weighed them later. The Ethiopia was 8.34 oz and the Columbia was 8.57 oz. The total at the register was $26 and change, but they were not individually listed on the receipt, so I have no idea of their separate prices.) I brewed them in a Chemex and I quickly found that they both turned out to be very rich and complicated. I hated to admit it. Now that I know what's up, I'll be back to meet their baristas.

Coffee is delicious. Pastries (from continental bakery) are yum. Put em together and you have a perfect start to your day. Perfect snack. Perfect anything. Modern loft style inside. Floor to ceiling windows street side. Clean and quiet. Absolutely love the floor... Odd I know. But at least go check it out. Menu is limited. But makes it super easy to order. AND their coffee is the bomb. You won't be disappointed.

So far, I'm not sold on this coffee shop/chain. It claims to be cheaper than other coffee in town, which is true with regard to Urban Standard. It's prices are on par with Octane, except Octane's coffee makes this coffee seem average. The place looks very postmodern and does not seem to have an identity. The location is superb though.

This place is coffee back to the basics. Espresso + ounces of milk. Coffee. Latte. Not only is the menu simplistic, but so is the location. The symmetry is so gratifying to the senses. Go and relax, study, read. It's worth it, I promise

I found this gem on my road trip across the country from portland OR to florida. My wife and I are coffee enthusiasts (read coffee snobs that is willing to settle for sub par coffee if quality coffee is unavailable.) . Thus we made it a goal to find cool coffee shops that offered high quality coffees. Before my trip I prepared myself to be disappointed once I left the coffee mecca known as portland. Once in Birmingham we decided to stop to see the civil rights museum and hopeful find some good pour over. We found this place on yelp saw it only had 3 reviews and decided to take a risk. We were amazed (that is probably from our shameful presumptions of the south) to find a chic, modern portland-esque coffee shop in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Here is our review of revelator : 1. The baristas we friendly, knowledgable, and willing to chat with us about their coffees and informed us about their different varieties of beans and methods of brewing. Also and most importantly they did so without being pretentious, and communicating clearly and succinctly. 2. We ordered the pour-over coffee and it was sublime. it was simple and beautiful. My cup had notes of blueberry and baker's chocolate. It was full-bodied with a smooth finish. 3. If we has stayed or lived in Birmingham we would have gone on a regular basis. 4. The atmosphere feels a bit cold due to the modern interior design but was a great space to chill in and drink a cup of coffee or read a book. However this isn't a place to go to feel cozy and study for hours on end. Also chatted with the staff and they said that they are in the process to make it feel more homey. Overall I felt like it was one of the best coffee shops I have been to in a long time. It felt like heart or coava without the pretense or portland apathetic baristas. Even though it is a bit out of the way from other thriving business, it is worth visiting.

Easily the best cup of coffee I've had in Birmingham. They're also moving their headquarters from New Orleans to Downtown Birmingham

Revelator is a very simplistic coffee shop bringing it back to the rare basics with their rustic industrial style interior design and their minimalist menu. They have friendly faces and serve great coffee. I would definitely recommend stopping by.

The absolute, undisputed (in my mind), take-it-to-the-bank guaranteed finest cup of coffee in Birmingham. It's a really bold space with friendly baristas that know what they're talking about and make excellent recommendations. Two things to keep in mind (and these don't alter a 5-star review in any way): 1. If you need a plug for your laptop, you may struggle to find one. 2. Bring your quarters, because parking down here will cost you. Hopefully the City of Birmingham will solve that issue soon... but I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's everything I want in a coffee shop. They have good coffee and a great atmosphere. I would definitely try it if I were you.

There's a flavor in this iced coffee that I don't taste anywhere else. It's familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm going to keep buying them until I figure it out, and it occurs to me that maybe that's all part of their business strategy to keep me coming in. Well played, Revelator.

Excellent place to stop in and get a coffee on your way to lunch or during a break. Shotgun style space with a high bar that runs straight to the back of the shop. Attention to detail is incredible, props to Revelator for making such a cool space in downtown Birmingham. Chemex-brewed coffee tastes great, and tastes great consistently. Not the place for custom espresso orders, though. They know what they make is good and they don't seem to want to deviate from it.

Wow. Absolutely fantastic. Best coffee in Bham. They actually started in LA, have more than a few locations, including one opening in Nashville soon. (Somewhat of a modern Mecca of coffee) so they obviously are doing something correct. If you ACTUALLY know about coffee extraction and depth of flavor, this place is tops. Very well developed espresso with just the right caramel color crema. All from a white 3-group Slayer with wood handles Baristas are knowledgeable, yet not overly friendly. The atmosphere is beautiful. People often think modern-industrial is cold. I would disagree, in that this environment is more for coffee purist, rather than "meet at Starbucks to all check our Facebook." So if you go into it with an architectural appreciation mindset then you are in for a treat. I would recommend this place above anywhere else in Bham. It would be a shame not to visit!

Maybe a bit early to say if this place brings any actual innovation or if it is just a cool looking Bar. The idea is great! Minimalist, nice seating areas with a fresh look. Big pro is that they actually weight the amount of coffee ground they use in each shot, so even the not experienced barrista turn out to make a good coffee, clever! The application of the idea is not quite as good. Right now all you can get there is a good cup of coffee and a decent espresso shot, but when I went they didn't have anything like a good selection of cookies or anything else that would go along with the drinks. Really bad approach for a Bar missing that. Maybe they will add later? Hopefully My cappuccino was tasteful but flat. The cream wasn't compact at all, and way too thin. They use a great organic whole milk from alabama, I use it all the time, but I learned that it is too fatty for making a good cream, they should mix it a bit with some reduced fat milk. Over the top of the worse is the sugar they offer. You won't find any "regular" sugarcane to put in your cappuccino, but only a liquid that is a sugarcane extract! Bad, bcz that says they don't know much about the "culture" of the cappuccino. Why you would ask!? Well, the point of having grain sugar on the cappuccino is to spread it on top of the foam so that you can bite a bit of sugar while sipping the coffee in order to have the contrast between the bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the sugar. I pointed that out to one at the shop and the answer was "we actually got a lot of good feedbacks on the liquid sugar"! I see, then next time I'll bring some sugar from home, I guess!! Nice place, with its own personality. Hard to tell if they'll keep on improving it and make it a great Bar, or if the self-glorification will leave the place in a limbo of incompleteness

Great News, multiple locations throughout the South!!! The Chattanooga location was a staple now hit Birmingham. Excellent consistent coffee with great service..

Cool little coffee shop. Now a huge overly complicated menu and not a lot of choices, but they they they do very well.

Love the communal table and calm atmosphere. Great spot to settle in if you have change for the parking meters!

This is a cool little coffee shop, and I'm glad it was good because it was the ONLY place to get a coffee on a Saturday morning in this neighborhood. The service was quick and friendly, the coffee hit the spot, they had almond milk, and they were even giving out free mini cupcakes with all purchases. The space itself has a very modern look and leans more towards the hard edges than the big comfy chair aesthetic of a lot of coffee shops. It wouldn't be a spot I'd want to relax with a book for a few hours, but I bet the stools would keep you awake if you really had to get some work done.
