We stopped in here for lunch the other day and I really enjoyed it! It was my first time there so I had no idea what to order, but the lady at the counter was really helpful and suggested a lot of their popular items to us. It was lasagna day, meaning on every Thursday they have all you can eat lasagna, salad, and bread for like $7. However I was wearing white and had to be back at work soon so I was intimidated by anything with red sauce- it looked super delicious though. I got the chicken salad sandwich which I really enjoyed, and my boyfriend got the chicken Parmesan sandwich which he practically inhaled, so I'd say he liked it. The service was incredibly quick so if you're hungry and in a hurry, it's a great option for you.

Weird, I've never had Chicken Fettuccine that tastes like this. Not really creamy but way to much butter.. They give you a 3 sectioned plate with the meal in the main (no room for getting the noodles on your fork or mixing the chicken in and lay the bread over the other two. The place is a dive. Almost every chair is stained with something or another. Every chair is a different style from the next as well. They play some obscure 70's music with bands you've never heard from on XM. Ancient wood paneling everywhere. Records hanging, and a guitar on the wall. Nothing really saying if it's a Italian restaurant or a place with 50's and a couple 70's records hanging on the wall. Don't park in lot if your not going there. No clear no parking sign but on day after going there I parked on side and owner called the cops and I got a ticket. The sign was hidden in the corner of a rotted out gazebo behind a fence on the other far side of the building.

I fly to Birmingham every week usually spend 4 days in town. If I don't get lunch from Ranellis at least twice I feel cheated. Great food, inexpensive, what else can you ask for? I have had their: Roast beef Sandwich Meatball Parm Chicken Parm Olive Salad as close to flawless as you can get. Service is fast, people are nice, crowd is also nice. If you forced me to say something negative I would say their delicious Olive Salad is a little on the expensive side. Just as a follow up, today i tried the much lauded "Lil' Richman" and my feedback is, that you can take a great mixture of meats, cheeses, olives and such and put it on a roll and it can be delicious, but if you drown it in yellow (French's type) mustard, then you have a "mustard sandwich" and you can't taste anything else so unless you like yellow mustard and don't care what the rest of the thing tastes like, tell them to "hold the mustard" Just my two cents

Skanky ! Look at the attention they pay to the exterior. Same attention is paid to the food. After living my life in Birmingham NO ONE I know recommends this dive. How it stays in business is a miracle.

I am in Birmingham every 2 to 3 weeks and had no idea this restaurant was so close to my hotel, the Birmgham Doubletree!!! Let me just say I am delighted to have found such a delicious inexpensive lunch. We spent $24.00 for three people and it was worth two times that. The sandwiches were so good and so was the lasagna. Can't wait to get back to B'Ham for this....

We dropped in after seeing the building in the five points area and then looking it up on yelp. I had the chicken salad which was very good but nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the bite of my husband's Richman sandwich! Every other good thing you read about it is true... they are famous for it for a reason. The sandwich alone is worth you making it your destination. You must stop by! The location is awfully cool, too.

Was really pumped about this place during my latest visit to BHM having read the solid 5-star reviews and checked out the pics. Old-school as hell, college dive feel, paper tickets, styro-foam cups, the obligatory Nick Saban signed pic on the wall, handwritten menu--joint looked right up my alley. I ordered their specialty: the Richman with a drink. Came to over $13 but I figured it would be well worth the dough if it tasted half as good as it sounded. My hopes were high. My number was called and I was handed a tray with a colossal sub on it wrapped in deli paper. I sat down with my diet Dew and unwrapped the steaming package with great anticipation. It looked--okay. The "Italian loaf" appeared to be two hoagie rolls like the kind you can find on any grocery store shelf. The signature olive spread looked like a mix of jarred green and black olives tossed in a vinaigrette. The combo of meats and cheese appeared a little tired. First bite: I'm chewing waiting for some flavor, any flavor to emerge the dominant one whether it be salty, briny, sour, sweet...nothing. I took another bite. Still nothing. 12-15 bites later (I take big bites) I was done. Nothing. Meats and cheese were all flat and when piled up together were just a muddled tasteless mess. Olive salad did little to add flare or even contrasting flavor. Yellow mustard cheapened the whole experience. In the end I felt full yet not satisfied. I looked around the place trying to kill a little time before I shuffled back to the hotel defeated. There was a sign by the register that read "extras cost extra" followed by a nearly one page manifesto justifying the need to nickle and dime you for toppings. Another sign advertised a "customer appreciation card" with which you could get a free sub upon purchasing 12--yes 12--subs. That sounds like a lot more appreciation on the customer's part to me. The mom and pop behind the counter were courteous but not overly friendly. I realized in was noon and the place was relatively empty--another clue. Fresh quality ingredients would really be all this place needed. The other details would be charming if the food was the standout. Too bad.

A simple 'Dittos' to Don L.... Don't miss the 18" Richman (with $2 extra meat) and the Roast Beef with onions, garlic & rich beef gravy and extra provolone!!! Sarah has been taking my order for over 12 years. This place is a must!

Ranelli's is one of the best sub shops in the birmingham area. The bread is always soft and fresh, and the sandwiches are served with fresh, tasty ingredients. The place has been there 38 or so years, i mean, that's gotta speak for itself. The place is clean, and the staff is always cordial. Plus, there is a life-size Elvis poster, guitar and sequins and all. The music always seems to be at just the right volume, too. But the food. Good, hot, tasty. The dill pickles are worth a stop as well.

If I am craving an Italian Style Sub I steer as far away from a chain as possible and always turn to Ranelli's. They tout a 40 year history and in my mind as I bite into the best Meatball Sub in town I like to believe they use they same recipes from 40 years ago. Yes the interior of the place has a rundown appearance but don't let that deter you from eating here. Over the years they have tried expansion even at one point having a location off Hwy 280 but sadly those other locations closed. No worries though. If you're in the 5 Points area stop in for lunch or an early dinner, they close at 6:00. I assure you you won't be disappointed.

I second all the positive reviews, but feel one other sandwich should be highlighted: The pizza sub. It is my favorite sandwich in Birmingham hands down! Pizza sauce, mozzarella and parmesan, amazing bread, and a TON of pepperoni. If you like pizza or subs , this is better than either. Amazing!

Ranelli's is an old school sandwich shop that makes you feel like you're back in college. Don't go expecting anything fancy, and you won't be disappointed. It's a great destination for really good sandwiches in a laid back environment. They always have GREAT music playing.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
