Only got to eat here once while working at UAB but I will stop by again if I return. Staff was friendly and the place had a nice atmosphere to it. The menu had all kinds of items I wanted to try but I went with the Hawaiian chicken burger with sweet potato fries. Both were very good.

This review is only for their baklava. Horrible. Worst baklava ever. Here's the warning-- contains peanuts. The owner orders it from Chicago, and they get it from a bakery in California. With all the amazing baklava bakers in town, this owner is ordering it from the same company that makes baklava for Sam's club. That's a crime against Birmingham culture. Please source your baklava locally, and from someone who knows you don't put peanuts in it, but you DO put in honey o_0. Bad, just bad.

Great typical college diner--the turkey bacon wrap & fries are delish! And they have Strawberry Soda!

Love their Hawaiian burger, their baklava, and the fact that they're open 24 hours.

Great place for late-night comfort food! The felafel isn't awful!

I remember this place was our go-to after getting out of work well past midnight back in '06. Always busy but cheap and quick decent food.

This place has a large menu. Seems to stay pretty busy, The food is decent after a night of drinking. I personally think it is a little pricey for what you get and the quality. You are only allowed 1 refill on your drink to. But they serve about every type of burger, gyro, you can think of. Beats waffle house.

I really like Mediterranean/Greek food. I feel this place always gets compared to Al's, and honestly the only complaint is that they charge more and give you a smaller portion here. Because it is never crowded, and the service is always good is why my friend always chooses it though.

okay....if you're new to Birmingham or visiting, a college student would probably suggest Purple Onion. It''s not your average burger/mediterranean meal. It's the good ol nasty food that you know probably isn't the healthiest, but SO damn good! Cheeseburgers, Kafta & Chili/Cheese/Ranch fries are great! The fries are sure to clog your arteries, but it's an indulgence that you should try in your 20's.....you haven't lived until you're tried such foolery. All jokes aside, Purple Onion is a Birmingham favorite. It is frequented by UAB students and alumni. They have several locations around the city. Late night snack time is the best-- open 24 hours for the young at heart! You won't be disappointed. happy(unhealthy) eat...if that makes sense to you. live on the edge for your eats at least once!

I've been back in Bham for 1 week, and where do my colleagues suggest we go one day for lunch? The purple onion of course! Quick, good food! I got the gyro salad ( a decent amount of meat), but then managed to dribble some of the vinaigrette dressing on my white blouse (great first impression, right?!). But back to the food. All in all, a good place to grab a quick lunch. Plenty of outdoor seating on those cooler days (not today!), and several booths inside to enjoy your meal.

Loved this spot since I was young. Classic Mediterranean American style food that always satisfies. Their burgers are good, especially the Kafta. And the gyros are always a go to. If you're feeling a chicken baker, I'd go to Al's, otherwise the two places are pretty much equal in taste and price.

Disgusting food. Horrible service. Baklava was old. The girl acted as if we were interrupting her when I asked questions, never smiled. We got the food the rice was cold, the salad tasted nasty. My daughter found a long black hair in her fries...I could go on but it was nauseating.

Everything that I have had here, frozen tasting chicken fingers excluded, is really good. A bit of something for everyone...burgers, Mediterranean, etc. Love the patio, and that they are open 'round the clock...so you can grab some any time you want!

This food is so disgusting. I have been here on the few times my boyfriend wants to go because he doesn't want to wait in line at Als. Well guess what, no line here! I ordered the veggie kabobs, they were okay, they may or may not have been sprinkled with MSG. The hummus was so bad I couldn't even eat it, very watery and plain tasting. I didn't eat the rice or salad either. Nothing special about the rice and the salad looked questionable. Do yourself a favor and go to Als instead, it's even cheaper!

Wasn't the cleanest place I've eaten, by any means. I've eaten there once-- ordered the falafel. It was mediocre, the place was a little roach-y, and I saw a cook touch the same tongs to cooking meat and vegetables. Talk about contamination!

Terrific alternative to a late night run to Krystal or IHOP.

I waver betwixt three and four stars, but given the Birminghamian alternatives during the wee hours of whenever, this can go four-ish. I see comments here on the burgers are this and the whatever's are that...for me, it's a late-night, ethnic eatery - and even after hitting up the Greek Fest, Melkite Fest, Maronite Fest, Cheesecake Factory, or Bottega (or, as of late, when you can't AFFORD Bottega), the beaming lights of the P.O. are a beacon to my pseudo-Arabic-Greco-Mediterranean cravings. The cravings, that is, not me. I go from Irish to Polish to German to French, but my chromosomes have missed any influence from Spain to Italy to the Far East. Nevertheless, my tastebuds have never been told. Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, Kebabs, Gyros...all reasonably priced and "right good." Not spectacular, but you don't go to an Elk's meeting expecting the Red Carpet, flashing bulbs, and interviewers from E!...know what I mean? I only wish this had been here when I was still at UAB. I could have walked here from Twin Towers...instead of wasting time throwing eggs and Bisquick bombs from the tenth floor onto hapless passersby. Who am I kidding? Bisquick bombing and Baba Ghanouj were made for one another. I'd have had my cake and thrown it, too. Unless you're a researcher that's just appeared on the planet and never seen an IHOP or Awful House except in scientific journals, skip them and race to the Purp. Don't bother telling them I sent you, as they don't know me. And savor the ethnicity. I don't go to Krystal's for Egg Drop Soup, nor should you.

I love eating here when I come back to Birmingham. I wished there were more of them. I love the food.

I eat authentic Greek rather often and for the Deep South this was quite the find! Fresh ingredients and amazing hummus and wild rice. Great for lunch.

I was reading the reviews on Yelp on how good Purple Onion is. I thought let me try them out. I went into the place, it is so clean, people are courteous. I ordered the Philly cheese steak and I heard their ranch fries were good so I tried it. It was soooo goooood. I loved it. And I will order from them again. Only complaint no dessert. Strawberry cheesecake or something.

The WORST purple onion in the area. Higher prices for less food. And the African girl with braids has the worst attitude EVER. I've been eating purple onion since 1998 and I will gladly drive up the highway to the Homewood location to get the quality food and service I'm looking for. This purple onion is HORRIBLE!!!

It is a college dive, but worth trekking off the beaten path to have a falafel or a Gyro.

Sub par "diner food", the place could be cleaner.

BBQ chicken potato was great. Took a little long for food to be served with little crowd. Overall very good place.

The Purple Onion is one of those places that you are glad to see open...but you still drive by it looking for something else. Whenever I end up there it is almost always by surprise. I might be downtown with the boys throwing back shots and beers while shooting drunken billiards and we stumble past and it seems to be a good idea at the time... like sleeping with your bosses daughter at the company holiday party. Its delicious and oh so right but so awkward 5 hours later... "did I really do that? My Gawd..what was I thinking? The Purple Onion is a guilty pleasure from time to time with its mix of American and Middle Eastern or Mediterranean food (although here I get confused at the difference even though I thought I knew the difference). The chili cheese fries are a good culinary slumming experience and the cheeseburgers are surprisingly good. You really can't miss with the gyro platter if you are a meat eater but they make you pay extra for a side of tziki sauce. Last time I ate there they were stingy with the tomatoes and one time they did not put them on my gyro at all. The salad dressing for the Greek Salad is not very flavorful and it seems they would just do better giving you some Paul Newman Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar dressing and just quit pretending that they know how to make dressing. As far as french fries are concerned I believe for a fast food establishment that they make some of the best fries in the city and dust them with a special mixture of paprika and salt.Again I found myself here by accident because it was 3pm and there was nothing else close by between lunch time and supper, but I was disappointed when I order their version of "Wings and Things" for $8.50 with a drink. I got 4 scrawny pre-frozen wings and two over breaded pre-frozen chicken tenders. I could not tell if these tenders were made of compressed mystery chicken meat or not. Next time I will go to Zaxby's if I want to get the REAL wings & things meal. The fries were good though! Vegetarians whether late night drunk or sober will feel satiated at the falafel platter or the garden burger but go ahead and just junk out with the fries because the rice they use tastes like boxed Rice-R-Roni. I give them 3 stars because they are a 24 hour establishment but they are also fast food. Despite my bitching about the menu, I am sure I will find myself here by accident again at some point. Oh Purple Onion..your late night lavender neon lights "had me at hello"...then again..perhaps the decision to embrace you had to do with the alcohol...and I suppose we all have made similar decisions under similar circumstances....

24 hours this place will keep you alive. If your parents show up unannounced and you need comfort food or you have been drinking for 10 days and you need nourishment, this is the place for you. This is as great a place to take someone on a date as it is a place to meet someone you would like to date. Only 4 stars though, because I have been here and the door has been locked (in all fairness it was like 7 a.m. and they don't serve "breakfast" food, so the workers could have been doing something in the back) but it was a tragic and unforgettable morning. I needed my fix like a newborn needs a nipple.

Pretty awesome place to grab lunch and they have just about everything from gryos to burgers to chicken fingers. Definitely worth the price and if you're a UAB student, you can get a free drink with anything over $6
