My old roommate/ good friend is from Georgia, a few years ago, when she found out I was going to Birmingham she got all giddy and said, " You HAVE to keep a look out for a guy on the side of the road with a cauldron and pull over and buy some boiled peanuts. Trust me, they are amazing and it is not weird" (*raise eyebrow here) Assuming it is Birmingham's equivalent to a TJ dog/street taco stand in Tijuana, I was willing to give it a shot. It didn't happen, I guess Birmingham is a but more urban and I did not see such a cauldron on side of road. So I went to the very next best thing... The Peanut Depot. This brick warehouse is on a small cobblestone road off 20th which is part of the charm. Inside is very simple and almost bare, there are a couple of furnaces (assuming where they roast) and a counter showing the sizes of the peanuts in a 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (yes 5 lbs of peanuts!!) All the peanuts here are in the shell and, in a big crate and this thing that looks like where they keep the hot dogs in a hot dog stand (for the boiled peanuts). The boiled peanuts are put in a plastic ziploc bag which is a little weird as with the heat it kind of stretches the plastic and then I have thoughts of heat, plastic, BPA (or equivalent), but for my purposes of trying to be southern I was okay with that. Of more recent news the prices of peanuts have spiked (almost doubled) due to supply, so be prepared to pay a little more and still support this unique store. I also splurged today and bought cajun and salted roasted peanuts. To share. I think... Anyone want some peanuts before I eat them all?

This is a pretty fantabulous place! It is located on a side street downtown in the historic district, and you can definitely tell the age of the buildings. The architecture of the depot is pretty amazing. I could envision some really cool photo shoots happening here. The PD smells absolutely wonderful. I've never before been so fascinated with the smell of peanuts in my whole life. They offer fresh roasted, salted cajun and raw peanuts. I got a pound of cajun and two pounds of cajun boiled and only paid ten bucks. Can you believe it? Ten bucks. You would pay more for peanuts that have been sitting on a shelf forever in a store. I am extremely pleased with my peanuts. The cajun flavored had just the right amount of spice and saltiness. You can buy shirts, single servings of peanuts and even bulks and wholesale. You can also get your peanuts in a neat burlap bag if you wish. I'd definitely frequent this place often if I lived downtown. Oh, and they have been serving peanuts to people for over 100 years. =)

Got a hankerin' for a handful of peanuts? This is the place. You can get roasted natural, salted, or cajun spiced. You can also get raw. The place isn't shiny and new; it's old brick, worn wooden counters, and gas-powered roasters that look like they've been around longer than every single person alive today. (NOT combined.) Every time I've gotten the natural (my favourite), they've still been warm, filling my car with a fabulous aroma. The cajun were room temperature. (They're a bit spicy, and somewhat addictive.) This place is a one-of-a-kind. If you even mildly like peanuts, you definitely must get to the Depot.

Stopped in with the kiddos who enjoyed a sample and a fun run through the process of peanut roasting and the history of The Peanut Depot. I grew up in Birmingham and had no idea this little gem was there! The peanuts are yummy and prices are good! We will definitely visit again!!

I finally found this shop. I searched for it when I was in Birmingham before but I was definitely going to locate it this time...it is located on a 'orginal brick street" on Morris St down near the train tracks. . We parked on the street at a meter for only .25 cents for 30 minutes but I only need 10 minutes. We went inside.wow it was like walking back into time..it was dark inside but the old antique roasters were amazing.. The guys inside was really friendly..and we bought a pound of Cajun dry peanuts..and they smelled so good...!! I will definitely go here again and next time buy some extra for my daddy back home in West Virginia. Great shop and it has been around since 1907

the employees here are great. Always happy and helpful. Boiled peanuts were a bit weird for my taste - just didn't love the texture. I'll stick with roasted peanuts. Here I enjoy all three flavors - plain, salted, or Cajun. They usually allow samples. Well priced here too.

Checked this place out while downtown Birmingham. The aroma of roasted peanuts was sooo wonderful. They have three different styles; unsalted, salted and cajun. I liked cajun best. There are three roasting ovens which have been in use since 1900's. I also tried boiled peanuts.. Worker says it was an acquired taste and she was not wrong. It tasted more like a soft bean. Overall I enjoyed visiting this historic landmark!

Incredibly tasty, fresh peanuts, your choice of roasted (mild, medium, dark) natural, salted (sadly sold out when I got there half hour before closing), or Cajun. Also have boiled, either salted or canjun. I couldn't make up my mind so I ordered a little bit of everything to take back home. My personal favorite is the Cajun roasted - crunchy and definitely have some kick! The peanuts were incredibly fresh, still hot even!, and service is really friendly and relaxed. Beautiful building built in the late 1800s and cute albeit quiet old downtown area, wouldn't recommend walking here, especially at night, and I didn't see any public transportation in the area. Even more awesome, I accidentally left my iPhone there and when I came back the guy behind the counter ran out with it and said that he tried to call the cab company to find me! Good people, yummy snacks (that make perfect souvenirs to take back to family!), I'd definitely recommend and be back next time I'm in town.

Dude is on point with his peanuts. While walking through the city eating a bag, all I could think about was " how do I get my friends in Nashville to try these?!" I will stop by every time I cruise through town.

If you are allergic to peanuts, this may not be the place for you.

Is say this was a pretty cool place to check out. I loved the location with the cobblestone streets and the old architecture. The staff was very friendly and informative about the facility. We were able sample all the flavors and enjoyed the Cajun flavor most.

Gem of a place! simply the best roasted peanuts out there.

Since my fellow Yelpers have eloquently said everything I really wanted to tell you about this place, let me just say I stop by every time I'm in the downtown 'Ham. It's that good. The location on the cobblestone street, the aroma of the peanuts roasting in decades old roasters, the quick service, but most of all, the flavor and roast are just perfect. Peanut Depot is one of the most unique, cheap, tasty food experiences that Birmingham has to offer. It really takes you back to a simpler time, before drive thrus and hap-E-meals, when the quality of a snack mattered to people just as much as a steak dinner.

OMG what a cool Southern thing to do! Every time I have someone from out of town visit we take a trip (with cameras in hand) to the Peanut Depot. They have the freshest peanuts you have ever tasted as they roast them there. Often when you go they have hot peanuts right off the roast that you can buy. Love the spicy nuts - no, I love all of the nuts. Staff is always smiling and super friendly. Go with room in your tummy so you can munch your way through the free samples!!

Based on the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews, I stopped by on a drive back north from New Orleans a couple days ago. So glad I did. The shop is on a quiet brick street in downtown Birmingham with little else nearby. The storefront is simple, and the interior simpler yet. Inside, the shop is basically a single quaint, dimly lit room with several antique peanut roasters on one side and a wooden counter opposite them. We bought a half pound of roasted, non-salted ($2.50), a bag of cajun boiled ($4), and my parents bought a large burlap bag of salted. The roasted peanuts are the freshest I've ever tasted. This was the first time my girlfriend and I had tried boiled peanuts, and they were a surprise hit. We were coming fresh off of roasting chestnuts during the holidays, and the texture of the peanuts was definitely reminiscent of them. The cajun seasoning was tasty and not that spicy. More important to our experience than the peanuts, however, were the people selling them. The workers (owners?) were incredibly welcoming, informative, and engaging. Despite the few options, our group was slow to make choices and our indecision was quickly met with a sizable sample of every type of peanut and the history of the store. The entire experience was a pleasure, and if I ever drive through Birmingham I'll be sure to stop by again.

Found this place by accident a couple months ago, while in Birmingham for work trying to kill time before a meeting, and was absolutely amazed! I saw the sign on the exterior and thought to myself "Any place that has been roasting peanuts for over 100 years must be doing something right!" There is nothing fancy about this place... old brick building... old wood floors... a couple really old roasters and pallets and pallets of peanuts. They only have a couple offererings (see other reviews) but they are all fantastic! I had no idea how good a roasted peanut could be until I came here!!! They also work with local citizens (all of the ones I saw were in wheelchairs) and give them peanuts to sell on the street (presumably splitting profits). I thought that was pretty cool. I believe they also ship. I will definitely stop by here next time im in town and recommend it to anyone who goes to Birmingham!

This place is way too cool. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you've gone back 80 years. Both the cajun roasted peanuts and cajun boiled peanuts were AWESOME! Only regret is that I did not buy more. Each bag of boiled peanuts is $3 and a pound of roasted peanuts is $4. The dude working there was cool and chatted with us about all sorts of stuff. I hope everyone who gets a chance visits this place and buys up a ton of peanuts 'cause places like this don't exist much anymore.
