This place seems good, but not amazing. I had the spicy tuna sushi and my friends had sushi or the tokyo bowl. We all agreed that it was decent, but nothing special.

Not the best sushi I have had... fish was not very fresh and I wish the portions were bigger! But I guess you get what you pay for. They have some unique combination I'm not sure if I am daring enough to try (I will eat raw ANYTHING but strawberries in sushi seems strange to me :). But this place is fine for a quick sushi fix.

Yeah! Used the handy phone to unearth this month old sushi spot. Definitely thought it was a chain - had that very well put together feel and heckofa graphic designer, but doing an internet search, it looks like this is the only one! There's a pay yourself station with sushi in the front, so if you're in a hurry, you can swipe your card and go. This is set up similar to a quickie burrito joint - go through line and pay at the front. Brightly lit, modern and extra friendly, too. If you're looking for authentic, where there are lots of Japanese workers, and kimono paraphernalia, you won't find it here. Americanized and targeted to those ok with the selection of rolls and rice bowls. Props to their friendly service, and a tasty and quick meal to boot! Go forth, Birmingham! I'm waiting on the Atlanta location!

Great variety of sushi and very fresh! Will definitely go back next time I'm in Birmingham!

Decided to try this place for lunch today. Always go to Newk's and Nothing but Noodles and manage to skip over this place. I ordered the Tokyo Bowl and the cashier guy was nice enough to suggest the Lite Bowl Combo which is the lunch portion and comes with a drink. Total came to $6.48 - very reasonable! The lunch portion was more than enough to fill me up! I chose brown rice and it was mixed with pieces of steak, chicken, baby tomato halves, corn, shredded carrots, and cilantro. Very flavorful and the rice was not dry at all! I'm thinking they used teriyaki sauce but not sure. Very tasty and will definitely go back and try some of the rolls next time!

OH MY GOODNESS. So, I just returned from a japanese restaurant in Upper West Side Manhattan. When they brought out my miso soup, I recognized that not only was it in the exact same bowl they give you at Maki Fresh, the soup also tasted shockingly similar. The sushi rolls were also of comparable quality. I've eaten at Maki many times for lunch, and for the price, what you get is incredible, and the sushi quality rivals fancy restaurants in New York City. The crunch roll is my favorite and the dipping sauce is heavenly. The way Maki Fresh is set up though, it's very difficult to eat with more than 4 people, so definitely reserve it for two-person lunch date. Always quick, friendly service too :) Definitely one of my favorites.

Great reasonably priced sushi place. Go with kodoma tuna or Kyoto.

Pretty good quick innovative sushi. I'd go back for some quick Sushi anytime.

I really like this place and wish I live closer to it. I had the tuna dish. The fish tasted fresh and big chunk. The fried coconut = yum! I would ask for the sauce on the side next time them. It's too salty and too much for my liking. But overall, it's a great alternative for a quick lunch instead of going to a fast food places.

I've been to this place several times since it opened and the food has always been pretty respectable. Unfortunately, this place seems as if its going steadily downhill. These days, the sushi is not any different than what I can get at Publix and the staff doesnt seem to care at all about doing a good job. There are many good alternatives to this place which I intend to frequent rather than going back to Maki Fresh.

Never has an issue with this place. The door is always ! We enjoy the salmon bowl, edamame, the Brussels sprouts are delicioso, & the tide roll is more favorite. The tide roll has a little cream cheese and it's a tempura roll! We've been here numerous times & we've yet to be disappointed!

For some quick and fresh sushi this is a great place to go. I always stop by to get stuff to pack my bento (Japanese lunch box). Their miso soup is always good too. They have a lot of different sushi to pick from. My favorite is unagi (eel). If your really in a hurry you can also get prepackage sushi made fresh that morning. Just get you a bottle of ramune soda and your good to go.

I went to Maki Fresh last night to get sushi to go. I had been several times before and it was always very fast. Last night they were packed and there was a 25 - 30 minute wait on all orders. They were also out of white sushi rice. Although it was a little frustrating to wait so long, the manager was very apologetic and gave me a free drink while I waited and a coupon for a free entree for my next visit. Several of the customers were frustrated, but the staff handled it with grace. The sushi was good (though my order was slightly different than what I had requested). I'm always please by the freshness and quality of the food. Hopefully next time I go they won't be quite so slammed!

I stopped at Maki Fresh for the first time a couple of nights ago because my friends and I were looking for a healthy, super-quick meal for a good price -- and this is definitely the place for that. I had a Samurai Roll and a Blossom Roll (the first was my choice and the second was recommended by the staff), and they were both fantastic. The service was very good and friendly, our meals were served almost immediately, and the sushi was incredibly tasty. Maki Fresh is certainly fast food -- it's fast, for one thing, and they're definitely geared more toward quick meals than a sit-down dining experience -- but they do seem to take extra care with making things special. The sushi tasted fresh (even though we stopped by pretty late in the evening), and it was presented with nice little extra details that made the food taste even better. Can you find more authentic sushi places in Birmingham? Of course you can. But Maki Fresh isn't trying to be fine dining. They're trying to be a good new option for a quick lunch or dinner, and I think they excel at that goal.

The restaurant decor and outdoor patio seating were probably the only good things about this place. It screams Asian fusion but at least it's pretty. For people who want a grab-and-go, there are entrees conveniently located at the entrance and you can pay immediately. The service was rude. I wasn't staring at the menu for more than 2 minutes when the waitress had this impatient look. When I asked her for recommendations, her reply was "anything you want" in a very sarcastic tone. Stick to the sushi rolls. The presentations for each sushi dish are fun and interesting to look at, making each order a pleasant surprise. Stay away from any dish with sauce. The hibachi bowl had rice and meat drowned in an ocean of chipotle mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce. It was almost difficult to lift the bowl. I couldn't taste any of the steak through this newly created soup. The caramel layer cake is seven layers of caramel creamy goodness. I enjoyed every bite of it but couldn't finish it. I felt sick after leaving because the food here was so rich. I had no appetite for dinner. Any time someone mentions this place, I can feel my heart and stomach grow heavy.

Went a couple of days ago with coworkers and was very impressed. The hibachi bowl was delicious and filling. The rolls were well made, especially the California and Kyoto rolls. The miso soup was warm on a dreary day. Can't wait to go back.

The sushi was really good, but the lady at the cash register didn't seem to like me. I feel like she was making fun of how broke I am because I thought I was going to come up short. I didn't expect what I ordered to cost as much as it did, but I was trying to get everything together. My boyfriend and I sat down for a moment to eat our sushi, then decided that it was way too loud and full of sweaty kids, so we left. The sushi was FANTASTIC. But, the atmosphere was a let down. I still feel embarrassed about the whole cashier thing. A cringe worthy moment in my life.

What a treat for "fast-food" sushi! Sit outside and enjoy the sunshine while you try the Ringo "eel, strawberry and cream cheese roll". Surprisingly tasty. My husband ordered the Blitz Bowl fall special and with bites of beef, mushrooms and crispy brussesl sprouts to fill each mouthful with flavor was larger enough to share or take 1/2 home for another meal. My other roll was the crunch crunch and it had perfect flavor in each bite. I do wish the rolls were a little bit less expensive so I could order 3 and try more a variety. OR a better "fall special" for 2 rolls & 1 signature - only $1 in savings. This is a place I'll enjoy again after church.

Like all the places I like for lunch, Maki Fresh serves fresh, made to order food. I generally stick with the sushi and edamame, but I have had the seared ahi tuna sashimi, the miso, and nearly all of the maki rolls and signature rolls. I have never been disappointed. The staff are always friendly. The restaurant is clean. There are kids selections, as well. Enjoyable, quick, fresh.

Service not particularly friendly... Employees def didn't seem to like their job that much. Had Kyoto roll and tasted average. Mushy sticky rice and too much of it. Other rolls I say looked much better. As for mine it was a disappointment. Kinda lame.

For the price (under $10), you can get some really tasty sushi rolls here for very little. The California Rolls are especially good if you're in a hurry, thanks to the fresh supply always stocked upfront. I recently tried the Eel & Strawberry rolls (like $8) and man - it was DELICIOUS. Then again, eel is always good - but the strawberry was a great idea. I wish they offered full pieces of sushi as well and the food was a tad more filling (maybe throw in a small cup of soup if you spend $8 or more) but overall, this a good place to eat at. Parking nearby in the crowded shopping area can be a pain though at times.

A favorite stop for "fast food" sushi - which is all I really get here! They do a half-off price at the end of the day too, which is an awesome deal with whichever rolls are already available -- my favorite being the Samurai roll. Yum. Also, they've got the freestyle coke machine that makes it worth getting a uniquely-flavored soft drink, even if you're like me and never really drink sodas! Worth it.
(4)Brian C.
Fast serve sushi rolls with far too much rice which totally masks the flavor of the fish. The seaweed salad was nicely seasoned. It's a good place for someone new to sushi to dip their toe in the water but will leave those more familiar wanting more.

I love sushi and coming from NY its hard to find a decent Sushi place in Bham. This place offers sticky sushi for moderate price. Don't get sushi here not sure what all the fuss is about from other reviewers but I ate here several times and every time the sushi disappoints.
(2)JanieMac D.
If you want delicious, fast sushi skip the supermarket and come here. There professional chefs know what they are doing! You could have a healthier quicker lunch or dinner in bham, with still being absolutely delicious!!!

Maki Fresh is fantastic! I always get the Ahi Tuna Sashimi and a Kirin. I notice a lot of people also enjoying the Maki sliders or 'minis' as they call them. The Burger and Grilled Salmon 'minis' seem very popular. Fresh Sushi and Japanese grill done quick. What a concept! Highly recommended restaurant. I leave there feeling great every time.

Maki Fresh's eclectic, healthy, and delicious menu was a welcome change for this out-of-towner from the normal deli and fast food fare up and down 280 near my hotel. The edamame was perfectly steamed and salted, and the blossom roll was a surprising combination of flavors that each stood out individually but then somehow melded into singular satisfaction. The staff was pleasant and helpful, and the prices and portions were extremely reasonable. There are indoor and outdoor tables. If you're in a hurry, the restaurant offers prepackaged sushi products in a refrigeration unit up front, similar to the sushi areas in grocery stores. The layout of the restaurant, similar to a sub or burrito place with an ordering counter, may be off-putting to those who prefer a more upscale Japanese restaurant experience, but the quality of the food and service far outweigh any such concerns in my book.

Yum :) Met Mom for lunch and she'd never eaten at Make Fresh! We ordered a few items so she could taste a little of everthing: Chop salad with tuna, Makidoma roll, and tempura green beans. The salad was a big portion for the two of us--and they have healthy, nutritional items in it. The Makidoma was delicious! Even better than I expected--I love spicy and it was right up my alley. The green beans were ok. They look really tasty, but I could have done without. Mom enjoyed it and I'm sure I'll be back!

I'm a big fan. This is owned by the same people as Jinsei, but is a more "fast casual" type atmosphere. Where Jinsei is expensive and pretentious, Maki-Fresh is quick, easy and always delicious. I know this is out of the box for a sushi place, but the tempura onion rings are amazingly light & topped with spicy mayo & at $2.95, they can't be beat. The Ringo roll has bbq'd eel, cream cheese, jalapeno & strawberries & is great. I'm a big fan of the chicken rice bowl, which is great if you have someone in your group that isn't a sushi fan. Highly recommended.

This place is fantastic. I've never gotten anything even average and the Crispy Brussels are a must have. Other highlights include the Crunch Crunch roll, the Thaiphon bowl, and the Classic Cali roll. Food is fresh, staff is great, service is fast, and most importantly, everything is delicious.

Great food...good daily lunch special around $9. Haven't tried anything other than their rolls, but the rolls are very good.
