This is a great pizza/pasta place with a fun atmosphere. The Davinci pasta was piping hot and delicious. My husband went with pizza and got the Teamster, which was pretty much perfect. The meats were cooked perfectly and the crust was crispy. We also shared the Tony for an appetizer, and we will definitely get it when we go back. It was everything that cheesy bread should be, and you get three dipping different sauces to try. We went on a Saturday when they were doing $5 margaritas, which was nice. It could've been a little stronger, but we were happy with it for $5. Finally, our server was friendly and we didn't have to wait on a table, so we'll back. You can also enjoy sitting on the patio if it's not too hot for you.

Been in Birmingham for two years. FINALLY!! Found the best pizza in the area. The quest has ended. Over two years of sampling conveyor belt pizza, pizza made on pre-formed dough, with sauce from a can...ugh THIS IS NOT THAT PLACE! They have the right ovens, the right dough, the right cheese. Oh Pizza Gods thanks for bringing MAFIAoZA's to Birmingham!! I have suffered so, pizzas cut into postage stamp size squares. UGH!! Pizza with burnt cheese oh Lord!! MAFIAoZA's pizza is as close to any pizza you could get in New York. They use Bakers Pride deck ovens, heated to 600+ degrees with the right cheese. Soft thin crust rescues me from the garbage that is passed off as pizza in this town. Lightly charred crust, oh how I have missed you!!

Love the pizza and the atmosphere my family and I eat here often. They always have drink specials happy hour and a great selection beers(which I dont drink) Every pizza I've tried has been extremely delicious!! Their fried ravioli and salad are great. Staff is very polite and friendly. Have seen families eat here in large groups during sporting events. If you love pizza you must give them a visit!!

There's a lot more than just pizza here! However, that's what I came here for and got half Thompson and half All Hail Caesar but with alfredo sauce. Don't get the All Hail Caesar. There's not much going on here. However, the Thompson is carb hell made in a pizza pie. They had the nerve to cut up steak fries and use that as toppings. It's delicious and needs to be eaten fresh. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really lovely. It's way nicer than any pizzeria I've been to. Their outdoor seating is what had me sold. Refrigerator Test: Absolutely tasteless. Don't do it.

We were looking for something local in the area and tried here. We were not dissatisfied one bit. Even though a ball team came In Just before us and there were only two servers, they were spot on. Food was great. We will try again

Great dinner at MAFIAoZas. I think one of the best outdoor dining areas in Birmingham and covered so if a stray rain storm hits, you are good! Plenty of TV's inside and out to watch your favorite game. Service was excellent with nice servers and bartenders. Food wise, you really can't go wrong. I have been here multiple times and never been disappointed. Plus you can get one slice with any topping rather than a whole pie if it is just two of you. Great wine selection too! Kid and dog friendly. Definitely one of my favorite dining destinations. Highly recommended!!

I love the neighborhood and family friendly vibe going here as well as the location. It's really nice to stroll around Crestline Village after dinner! The pizza is always delicious and I'm a big fan of their salads. We have watched a sports game here on a few occasions and had a lot of fun. That being said, the service has always been the downfall. On two separate occasions it has taken us nearly 15 minutes to get our drinks and our appetizers took nearly 45 minutes. I understand the wait for the pizza but not a side salad and garlic knots. However, I would still recommend Mafiaoza's for large groups, families, and a great place to eat on the patio because theirs is huge! And all of the pizzas I've had have been fantastic.

Yet another great pizza place in the Bham Metro area. And although it isn't just a local place, it has that local feel. Since it is in the heart of Crestline Village, parking can get a little dicey from time to time. But there is a ton of seating inside and out. So I have never had a long wait for a table there. If you are going to try this place, Tuesday is the night to do it. It is REALLY crowded those nights. But there is a reason for that. BOGO slices of pizza. With ANY amount of toppings. Cheap draft beer prices to accompany that, and you've got a great weekday night coming your way. And the slices aren't small. Getting one slice (and your one for free) can usually be enough. Unless you are real hungry. They have a wide selection of toppings. And not just your pepperoni and sausage. But a whole ton of unique, fresh toppings. The crust is thin under the toppings. And the outside crust has a crunch to it, with a soft center. My kind of crust. Overall a great atmosphere and slice of pizza. The only complaint is that the prices can get a little high. Especially if you custom make a pizza. But definitely worth it.

Grading the pizza here. The pizza that I got was not particularly good, but I see the potential here. Ordered it late and had it delivered by grub hub, so I suspect they did a rush job on it.The crust is paperthin, which is my preference. Probably will go with the extra cheese next time. Also got the dry wings. Decent, but nothing to write home about.

My cousin brought me here when a friend of hers suggested it because of its gluten free pizza options. I've had the same GF crust at other pizza places (not sure what brand) but it was really good with "The Greek" toppings. It has a good sized patio outside, great for cooler weather. The interior has an open view of the kitchens pizza oven and a very clear "mafia" theme and décor. Great place for families or groups.

I've been here twice. First time my husband and I came just for beverages and sat at the bar. It was not busy and we got pretty good service and awesome drinks. The second time we came it was not very busy and we ate dinner. We had the Tony bread and a pizza and a drink. The drinks were great and the food was amazing. I don't know why they aren't very busy, unless people just don't go out past 9:00. Anyway, it was pretty good so I'd recommend giving it a try.

I'm a big fan of Mafiozas. They have very good pizza, a great selection of quality drafts, and a fun atmosphere. Yes the crowd is....well you know what it is. But the overall experience is fun. Tuesday's are 2 for 1 on slices of pizza and half price adult refreshments. Plus they have live Jazz. This is definitely the time to go, though get here early as it will be very crowded. This is also the time to try out some of the premium toppings, Their handmade mozzarella is delicious, get the Mahgerita pizza!

This place is great, especially on a Tuesday! It's packed -- the wait was about 1 hour but totally worth it. The BOGO free slice plus 1/2 off drinks make it a great place to hang out! I love the atmosphere also. The pizza was pretty good, but for the price, heck you can't beat it! Will go again!

Mafiaoza's is a fun Italian restaurant located in Crestline Village. On Tuesdays they have half-priced pizza and beer which is especially nice. In fact, it's so nice that those are the only times I've visited Mafiaoza's. It is clear that I am not the only one who enjoy's going on Tuesdays because there is usually some waiting involved, however this waiting isn't so bad when you consider they have a two man soft-rock/jazz band and a bar to kill some time. As for the pizza, the slices are large and tasty and I always end up leaving with leftovers. Also, most of the items on the menu have mafia names such as the informant, the associate , etc. Perhaps one day I will visit when its not half-price pizza and beer, but until then I will continue to enjoy my Tuesday night tradition.

After living in Birmingham for over a year and searching high and low...I have finally found the REAL New York Style Pizza! Mafiaoza's is tucked down a side street in Mountain Brook and well worth the ride from Hoover. I decided to get the plain cheese pizza to get the real flavor of the pizza and I was amazed how much I felt like I was back in New York! Everything about the pizza was delicious! I had to stop myself at 2 slices. Mafiaoza's just go 2 new customers!

I love this place for take out! Their salads are extremely fresh and different! I also recommend lasagna ( red) , the soups are good, too. I haven't tried the wings but hear they are the best in town! I have had different type service though when I dine in, once the waiter was very strange & jittery , but other times it's been fine- also the child friendly atmosphere is annoying to me bc toddlers running about makes me nervous! I am glad they are child friendly though! I still give it A+ for the sports bar atmosphere & being family friendly! I order take out 75% of time - it's always fast!

I've been here a couple of times and each time it's been average. I will say that going on a Tuesday is worth it since it's BOGO on pizza slices and they have specials on practically all the alcohol. I got two slices of pepperoni pizza for $3.50 and they were so big I could only eat one. They also have a live band on Tuesday, so it can get pretty loud if you sit outside. I've noticed that the service after you get seated is kind of sluggish. The crust is a little too thin for my taste, but like I said, on a Tuesday, it's all good. Pretty cool date spot if you're looking for one..

10/2013 I'm going to have to give these guys another try. This place has all the makings to be a great place, though pricy. I got 3 pies and a brushetta. One of the pies was burned. I think they call it the "Last Request". It's their version of the "Supreme" it's got everything I've ever seen on a pizza. Everything but the burned pizza was good. If they make this good, I will be ready to give them another shot. 12-6-13 Ok, here we go again, We got the The Mona Lisa- a Cannelloni dish $11.00, The Consigliere- Lasagna $12.00 . Both were good with smaller than expected portions. We'll we tried it again and once again got three 18" pies. The DeMartino - Sun Dried tomatoes, Arugula, Salmi Toscana, goat cheese Basal Chiffonade $29.50 The Last Request (Supreme EVERYTHING I've ever seen on a pizza) $26.00 The Long Vacation (Hawaiian -Mozzarella, Ham & Pineapple. $18.00 Both the DeMartino & the Last Request were good but way to expensive, the "Long Vacation" had a all the makings to be good, but just like before they had burned at least 1 of my 3 pies to the point the taste was horrible. I just don't get it. For the prices I paid, I could have gotten a 5 star meal - even a pizza for instance "Wood Fried Pizza" with the finest ingredients from Bottega's. I'm really all about doing business within your neighbor hood or getting I good pie from your neighborhood pizzeria at a reasonable price. Since we really don't have one close enough for delivery that I like I'm still on the hunt. If anyone has a recommendation close to Liberty Park that's not your typical fast food pizza or yankee pizza I would like to hear it. So far I usually have to drive to Davenports for consistently good pizza. I really wish Cosmo's would open a place close!

If I was able to rate just for the food then it would get five stars, however the service brought it down. When we entered the hostess gave us a glare and walked away. We stood up at the hostess stand for at least 10 minutes while two waiters had a conversation at the stand while they stared at us. When the hostess came back she huffed at us in irritation and said we can seat ourselves. When we sat down the restaurant was empty except for people watching games at the bar. When the waitress showed up, yet another ten minutes later, she asked us when the rest of our party was coming. It was just the two of us, so she asked us why we decided to take up such a big table. It was only a four person table, the only two person tables we saw were bar height tables, and we were the only people ordering food, so what was the big deal. If it was really a problem than why didn't the hostess take time out of her busy day to seat us. The pizza was pretty amazing. There have a great selection of interesting combinations, not your typical pizza. The crust is really good, not dry, so they are no "pizza bones' leftover. We tried this place on the way to the airport to get back home to Houston, TX. We were lucky we had extra time, because we spent an hour and half in the restaurant because of the bad service. It seriously took the waitress 20 minutes to get our check. So the food and atmosphere is great, just don't come here if you have plans right after.

Went here with a friend when I was in town and was very pleased, it was a night where they offered specials like 2 slices for the price of 1. We took advantage of the special and had 2 great pieces of pizza. We also had a few of the appetizers, I love the way they let you pick and choose to create your own combo for ordering small plates/apps. Overall great place, it was busy on a Tuesday night, live music and good food. What a nice find!

Atmosphere: pleasant enough. There are quite a few tables near the doors, which I don't like since I don't like being blown by cold air periodically. I was here on a Saturday night and kids galore. It seems the kind of place you take a date in the neighborhood in this awkward junior high years of 'hey, there are people of the opposite sex!'. Also, it's in Mtn brook, so anticipate a disproportionate number of sweatervests and Northface jackets. We were seated near the bar and it was entirely too loud to have a reasonable conversation. I left with a headache. Hostess and seating: there are two benches for folks waiting to be seated an some room to stand, though when it gets crowded, those waiting are creepy on a couple of tables. This place is trying too hard. The food (we ordered pizza and pasta) was pretty good, but nowhere near good enough to justify the prices placed upon it. I was pretty pleased with the wine selection, however, and the server's ability to steer me towards something that would go well with my food selection. I heard a lot of hype about the place before going, but it failed to achieve what was promised.

The brick oven pizzas are quite good and tasty, but there are several issues that detract from this place. When there is live music it is unbearably loud in the main room. The service is reliably slow, and on one occasion when we asked to be moved due to the noise, the waiter ignored our request. On another occasion the waiter knew very little about the beer selection. There are always families here, which is fun, but which also means long waits between 6-8. May want to skip the restaurant and just take out.

I like this place, especially on Tuesdays because of the buy one get one slices and 1/2 price draft beer (even the high gravity stuff). The pizza is pretty good, but not the best pizza in the world. Their full pizza tastes much better than the slices, but the slices are so cheap on Tuesdays that it ends up being a great deal. Even though we know it's just ok, my friends and I will go there on Tuesdays to have drinks and enjoy the atmosphere. it is a pretty cool place to hang out.

So I have been to Mafioza's about 4 times since moving to Birmingham. The food is always decent, the atmosphere is VERY family friendly, and the wait staff is just ok. My issue with this place is that the total bill is always more than I think I should spend on pizza or a salad. I love their Pucetti salad, but come on, 15.75 for a Spinach Salad with Chicken and Goat cheese? Especially when you add a side of kids running around the restaurant playing tag. Plus they nickle and dime you on everything. Once I ordered an appetizer of wings and the waitress asked if we wanted ranch or blue cheese. The whole table was anticipating sharing the appetizer so we asked for both. When our bill came she had actually charged us for the ranch dressing. Seems a little bit unnecessary to me but if they make ends meet by charging $1.50 for ranch then I guess that's what has to happen. I just wish we had been informed that it would be an additional cost. If the price point wasn't as high as it is for a neighborhood, family pizza restaurant then I probably would be giving it more stars. I should also note that I'm not against eating at restaurants where kids are a part of the mix, just go here expecting to have it be extremely kid friendly environment and you will enjoy yourself. For just about the same price, you can head down to Bettola and get a MUCH better meal from an award winning chef.

My husband and I found this great little place by accident. We are from San Antonio, TX and oh my this place is out of this world. Their meatballs melt in your mouth. The pizza, atmosphere, and service are deserving of five stars. If you are in a rush don't bother this is a place where you come to enjoy good friends, quality time with your spouse, and savor the food.

This place has a lot of children running around like Zoo animals. We tried to enjoy our pizza but it was a little loud. The pizza was ok but we like Davenports a lot better even with the square cut slices. I hope they get an adult only room as that is the only way we will be going back

I went here on a double date two weeks ago and it was dead on a Saturday night, then again we didn't show up until 9:30 so maybe that makes a difference. I debated giving this place three stars but the fact that I've been craving their thin crust, lightly sauced pizza made me realize I liked it better than I thought. It's definitely worth a second try. Not to mention you can order it by the slice, something I haven't done since the last time I was on the East Coast. I'll have to try it on a different night however to get a real feel for the place. Overall for the price (and the Hoegaarden) I'd definitely head back.

Mafioza's is an upscale pizza restaurant and bar that serves a spattering of other Italian food. It can get pricy for a pizza, but the quality is as good as you will find in Birmingham. Depending on the hour you come, you will either find the place overrun by families with children, or a yuppie crowd enjoying the bar and live music. When it is crowded, it is quite noisy, especially with the live indoor music so close to the tables. Why many of these live musicians feel like they need to amplify their sound in a neighborhood restaurant I'll never know. I prefer to be sat outside or the opposite side of the restaurant when a live band is playing because sitting at the tables near the music is uncomfortably loud and it will be impossible to carry on a conversation. The food itself is excellent. The selection of toppings is second to none. You can stick to typical toppings like mushrooms, pepperoni, and onions, or you can step outside of the box a bit and try shrimp, drunken goat cheese, taleggio, olive tapenade, eggplant, or artichoke. There are literally dozens of toppings to choose from. There's quite a few house specialty pizzas and of course you can design a pizza (or a slice) tailored exactly as you like. The same applies to their pastas. Feel free to try a house specialty, or pick your noodle, pick a sauce, and then add any of the pizza toppings you'd like to it. I should also mention that they have an outstanding antipasti dish "Piccolo Morsi" which are small bites of unique cheeses, meats, and sauces. I typically leave it up to my server to recommend 3 or 5 to try. I've never been disappointed with these. Tuesdays is a great night to visit. 2 for 1 Pizza slices (and these pizza slices are huge), and the alcohol is highly discounted as well. Be aware Tuesdays draw crowds like a Friday or Saturday though!

This is some good pizza, and their take on garlic bread's not half bad either. My office ordered a few pizzas in for lunch, so I didn't get to enjoy them hot out of the oven, but even so, the veggie and pepperoni pizzas were excellent. The garlic bread wedges were substantial but not too dense, wonderfully complementing the pizza slices. Definitely need to try this food out on-site next time.

Easily one of the best pizza places in Birmingham. Great atmosphere and better ingredients. Sometimes it can take a bit to get your food, but it's definitely worth it. With pizza names like "The Scarface" and "The fall guy" or even "The Irate Italian" what's not to love?

  • David R.

Good atmosphere, and quality food makes Mafiaoza's a good place to "meet and eat". Family friendly, there is a dough bar to keep the young ones occupied while you enjoy a nice meal. Friday night was a bit crowded, and service speed suffered a bit, but this is to expected when that busy. (wait time for pizza was about 45mins). Very cool that you can order by the slice, with a WIDE variety of toppings. The slices were about $2.50 + $0.50 per topping. Being able to order by the slice really does free you up to try something different without buying a whole pie. For something other than pizza, there is plenty to choose from. Would I go back?: "I Would go back with friends as a good place to meet up, but wouldn't be top of my list to just grab a quick diner."

This is a great neighborhood hangout with excellent food and bar selections (24 premium beers on tap plus a great wine list). The menu has everything from apps, salads, sandwiches, pizza and pasta dishes. Its a casual place where you can hang out, meet friends, watch a ballgame or listen to live music. The staff is very friendly. Maf's is about a mile from my house so I average going about 3 nights a week when I am in town. Tuesday's are huge with drink specials, 2 for 1 pizza slices and live music. They also have a privarte room that you can reserve for large parties and they do catering. When you go please don't drag in a bunch of friends and sit at the bar becasue you'll be in my way.

I ate here on a Tuesday night in November. There was a line out the door at 7:30 and a crowd in the bar. They had a jazz combo playing in the bar and a good scene happening all night. I ordered several interesting beers and a Brass Knuckles pizza. The beer was tasty, the pizza great, and the scene fun! I'll definitely be back.

    (4)
  • Sean M.

The pizza was pretty decent but I do have a complaint. If I pay $3/topping on a large pizza, then I expect to actually get the toppings and not a small dab on a few slices. They need to fix this if they want to be considered a top pizza place in town.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
