I was visit Birmingham for work and stopped by this place for dinner based on previous rave reviews. I can honestly say I was a little apprehensive, thinking could this place really be this good? I can't sing it enough praise. I sat at the bar and had amazing service. The food was tremendous. I was "watching what I was eating" but How could I not get the chicken and waffles? It was well worth it "cheat meal", in fact it was so good I contemplated ordering a second one while I was still eating the first. I followed my amazing dinner up with the White Chocolate bread pudding. This sh$$ is out of this world good!! Without a doubt I will make this a stop every time I am in Birmingham.

This review is for their restaurant week menu. We arrived at 6PM on a Wednesday, and only 5 tables were occupied. Didn't expect that during a once a year event! The three course meal came with a small side salad (pretty standard: arugula, no iceberg!), and I ordered the famous meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The potatoes were the highlight of the meal. The meatloaf was pretty dry, and both the potatoes and meat were begging for more of the mushroom gravy. What a missed opportunity! Next came dessert: my friend and I split the dark chocolate bread pudding. It's bread pudding. I wasn't expecting much....I guess from bad experiences in my lifetime. I was pleasantly surprised... The chocolate elevated the dessert significantly! Would I order by itself if I return? Probably not. But it definitely fulfilled my sweet tooth. For $20, this was a pretty solid meal. Next time I'm getting the chicken and waffles!

We got all pumped up going to John's City Diner to try their chicken and waffle, but at the first bite, it was just... salty. And that was about it! The portion was large, a breast piece with a wing attached and a full leg quarter. The dark meat was moist, but the white meat was on the dry side. The breading was pure salt, tasted a bit burn actually. The waffle was good, though nothing special. The part under the chicken got squished and was soggy with syrup. The waiter asked if we wanted bacon, and we were all for it. Well, he forgot to mention that it would be bacon bits mixed in with the waffle, and by bits, he meant one bit or two, and it would be $2 extra. We also got the Rockefeller oysters, which were deep fried oysters on top of a bed of spinach. Now the spinach was good, but the oysters, again was drenched in salt and more salt. Overall we were disappointed.

This place was almost perfect. The atmosphere was great, the food was incredible, but their service was really slow. I don't know if it's because it was near the end of the day (8p) or of it was because I was with a group of people, but we were pretty much the only ones there. Would I go back? Yes, definitely. Would I recommend it? Yes, definitely. PS: The chicken & waffles were a-ma-zing.

Staying at the Tutwyler and our driveway er, Ryan recommended this place. Too many great things on the menu. Pork chops. Best I've ever had. Grits and corn. Who would have thought it could taste so good to a Yankee. Go here. Eat well.

The chicken and waffles were great! Very tender chicken with great crust and flavor. The waffle was moist and the flavor with the bacon added was on point.

Stopped here with my husband as we were passing through Birmingham on a long road trip. We didn't want typical fast food so we stopped at John's City Diner. Good fresh food. Quality ingredients. Cooked perfectly. Casual atmosphere. Good service. We are a foodie family and this place passed out test.

I find it so hard to believe that it took me this long to come to this Downtown Birmingham staple. Now granted, I have had their food at other events around town and always said I needed a trip. Well this past weekend, it was a dream no more! We first went in and asked if we had a reservation. I was taken back a little since I didn't think we really needed one. But after finding out there was a rehearsal dinner in the back and a party in the front, I understood why. We were happy to sit at the bar, and pretty glad we did. I was able to hear the nightly drink special and once had bourbon, tea, and mint simple syrup... Yes please! I don't remember the name of it, but it was delicious. We started with the Oysters Rock-a-fella, their twist on the classic. It was basically a bed of creamed spinach with lightly fried oysters on top. Incredible!! My wife doesn't like fried seafood, but it was light enough for her to enjoy. I then carried on to what is now their famous Chicken and Waffles. All of the pictures you see on here don't even do it justice. It is HUGE. I have had tastes of it before, like I said. But to get the whole thing, simply incredible. I am not a sweets person by any means. So when chicken and waffles already have the syrup on it, and threatens to be too sweet, I am very wary. But this was the perfect blend of sweet and savory with a strong pull to the savory side. Perfect for me. But unlike me, I couldn't even finish it. It was a half a chicken and a huge waffle. I couldn't finish either part. Not because it wasn't delicious. But because I wouldn't have been able to move! I will be back at John's time and time again. This is just the first trip of many.

Tonight I had the meatloaf which is their specialty. It was very good (4.5). The meatloaf had a crust on it with shoestring onions on top and mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy beneath it. For $15.50 it represented good value, was a large portion and tasted great. I also added a side salad for $3.50 and it was very good also (4). Quality ingredients with both items. Also my service was prompt and professional. This is an upscale diner and not typical of a regular city diner. Prices are very reasonable and the food is very good. Currently it has about 100 reviews and is averaging 4.5. I agree with that. If I lived here I would eat here often. I really liked my meal! I rarely ever give a restaurant a 5 my first time. This place deserves a 4.5 rating. If I get to come back and have another pleasant experience like this one I will raise to a 5. Come here for an excellent meal without busting the budget. I highly recommend!

Really good food and great service. Place is small and quite empty. Like others I am not sure why. Based on the reviews here I had the chicken and waffles and it was absolutely outstanding. The booth tables could be a bit larger... as a big guy I was really squeezed in there! I have tried other dishes aside from the chicken and waffles, the mac and cheese and the pork chops. Both were EXCELLENT! The pork is from a local farm which the guy raises the pigs better than his kids (lol) and brings the meats on his own pickup truck. You can't ask for something more local than that!!

Went here for the first time today, and was very pleased with the food at this Birmingham staple. We went around 1:30pm, so there wasn't really a crowded. Our server was good, but it seemed like his attention was a little divided, because there were a few times where he could've been more attentive. For apps, we had the tater tots and fried okra, and they were delicious. The tater tots were large and reminded me a little of hash browns. The tater tots were my favorite. The child's meal came out first, which was good, because the little guy was hungry, but the buttered noodles and beans came out VERY hot. Not only was the food very hot, but also the bowls were incredibly hot. We had to transfer the noodles to a small app plate to cool it down, and the bowl was too hot to put in front of a two year old. If our server had checked up on us, we would've asked for a small bowl to transfer the noodles instead of the app plate. To be honest, that is one of the major reasons why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4. For our entrees, we had the porkchops and meatloaf, and both were really good. However, it took a very, very long time before we got our meal. We were starving by the time we got our meals. That's the second reason why I'm giving this 3 stars instead of 4. All in all, we had a great experience, and we will return again.

Our first time here. Came from out of state, GA and AZ. Excellent service from Meagan. the Mac and Cheese (all 3 types) and Chicken and Waffles were wonderful. Give this place a shot when you're in Birmingham!

I had the oyster Rockefeller and it was delicious. I went with the trout and switched the mashed potatoes for fried green tomatoes. A great call. Then white bread pudding. Yummy. Plus hS their version of Moscow Mule called Monkey something. Mixed well as I make them myself. Great place well priced and not loud. I will return.

Such a cool atmosphere! It has the remnants of an old diner but you know that it's a lot more upscale. Everything you order is above and beyond what you'd expect. Of course, I ordered the chicken and waffles! Also, I ordered the pecan pie turnover dessert HEAVENLY! It's fried pecan pie topped with rich ice cream...that's all I'm going to say!

A rainy, cold Friday made perfect my John's chicken and waffles. I can't even put into words how delicious they were. Half of a chicken on top of a cheddar waffle covered in balsamic maple syrup. Made my mouth so happy. It was nearly a religious experience. I highly, highly recommend. My server was so friendly, and I had my food within 10 minutes. Two thumbs up. I will be back, especially when the fried green tomatoes return.

A great little slice of old Birmingham. On special occasions, my parents would bring us here in the 60s and 70s. And the place is still serving it up. In fact, with some new ownership, the place has new life. It's not haute cuisine, but it's something equally good: A reliable place downtown that's been around forever and the waiter really knows his stuff. Definitely worth a visit.

All you need to know.. Chicken and Waffles. Sure it isn't just fried chicken and waffles - it is a cheddar waffle, with a balsamic maple syrup covering the fried chicken. I was skeptical about these flavors.. then I took a bite. Then took about 15 more bites until I sat in the booth for 45 minutes wondering how the heck I was going to make it to the airport. It was worth it. The chicken pieces are massive. Definitely could have shared this meal as the portions were not what I am used to. The collard greens were spicy - thinking made with a hot sausage instead of ham. The waffle was crispy (ain't no one want no limp soggy waffle). Ralph our waiter was epic. He let us sample some of the beers before we decided on two local brews (a blonde and a rye beer). That southern hospitality is true.. he was so friendly and didn't make us feel like we were rushed at all. Kept making sure we had everything we needed, but not overbearing, and also talked with us about our visit. The space is modern but still has the old diner touch and subtle hints of it's roots. Darkly lit with spacious cozy booths. Would be a nice little dinner place to date a date. Thank you Southern comfort food provided by John's City Diner!

Had the South Pacific chicken salad. The chicken in the salad was excellent, the greens were fresh. The dressing....not so great. Had one of their draft beers. It was ok. And for the grand finally and saving grace the white chocolate pudding. Man is that dessert banging!!! I was here during the lunch crowd. Let's just say service was slow. Very very very slow. I will come back because the menu is interesting. I want to have something better than the salad next time. Maybe chicken and waffles.

I don't understand why this place isn't crowded. Every time I come, there's hardly anyone inside, but I just don't know why. The prices are fairly high, but for the portions and quality, I never feel cheated and always leave satisfied. The exterior may remind you of Birmingham's earlier years, but the interior is very modern and clean. I was surprised at the contrast from outside to inside. I've had the pork chop, which was the best I've ever had. Flavor was incredible, juicy and tender, and relatively no fat. I highly recommend it. I also had the burger, which had an unusual flavor that I wasn't sure about at first. But I finally decided that it was a unique and flavor packed take on the traditional burger that's at least worth trying once. As far as drinks go, I've only tried one, which is frankly all I need. The John Zombie is a fruity cocktail served in a classy skull glass. But the appearance isn't it's only appeal. The mixture of alcohols and juices balances out for an incredible taste. One of my favorite cocktails around, almost on par with Collins Bar's specialties. Almost. And finally, the Bread Pudding dessert was phenomenal. Such a large portion, and packed with flavor. Also very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night and the place wasn't packed, not dead either - good alternative to waiting an hour for a table at El Barrio a couple of blocks down. - ambience: welcoming, chic interior with a nice host and friendly waiter. We sat for dinner, not at the bar. - food: I got the chicken, which was cooked perfectly. Skin was herbed and crispy, dark meat and white meat were juicy. Potatoes were smashed w their skins and complemented the chicken well. Green beans were just slightly overcooked but fresh, not canned. My dinner companion got the tree hugger nym Mac and cheese, which he enjoyed. Not too heavy but plenty filling. We got a side of corn which was unimpressive. Portions were generous. - overall: would definitely go back!

I'm not sure I understand why this place is supposed to be so good. The layout is really in agreement with the place name, i.e. it is a diner. Service is nice, but not so professional and quiet slow. We had to ask for one of the drinks 3 times. Not a big deal, and that said, they try to do their work and in a nice way. The food is just ok. I didn't dislike anything, but neither liked anything. Limited selection of drinks, and quiet short menu, all based on few items. It's an OK place, you won't regret going, you won't crave for going back.

Went here on a weekday evening. The good: great appetizer--big bacon over some tasty grits. Certainly worth buying. The dessert was fairly good too--a chocolate bread pudding, not quite my favorite texture and a little too sugary, but ok. The bad: service was slow. And really, not much reason why--it wasn't a busy night. The entrees were not quite up to par. The fried oysters didn't taste fresh enough; the meatloaf was better, with a decent red wine sauce. So, overall a little disappointing given the quality of reviews on here.

Found on Yelp in search for a lunch spot upon our arrival (first time) to Birmingham. We met a guy on the plane after we found it that also recommended. He nor Yelp let us down! Great space and decor. Super helpful, friendly and attentive wait staff. Delicious food. Can't ask for more than that! I got the chicken and waffles (added bacon). I probably wouldn't add the bacon next time, because I couldn't really taste it, but overall delicious and the chicken was perfectly fried. I had a Bloody Mary as well. Nicely made and perfect brunch addition. My boyfriend ordered the Three Little Pigs mac and cheese. He's a nut for some M&C ...this was amazing! The waiter was great when explaining it to him about the portion size and even though he was a little worried it might not be enough, the meal was really filling and he wasn't able to finish it all. Definitely a must on the menu! They had some great local beers to choose from and the waiter was even nice enough to recommend another place around the downtown area (in walking distance) to try out for another drink.

John's is a solid if somewhat over-priced institution with somewhat upscale comfort food. Aside from one occasion, I have never left truly disappointed but definitely feel that their prices tend to be a little precious for comfort food. Don't get me wrong, they do what they do really well and their portions are typically pretty generous, which likely accounts largely for the price, but $15 for a small portion of trout, mashed potatoes and collards for lunch seems a bit steep. Likewise the pimento cheese app and mac and cheese mains are very good, stick to the bones comfort food but spendy. Service has always been good albeit sometimes slower for bigger groups. Will I return? Absolutely.

This review is based on a wedding rehearsal dinner, and boy was it fantastic. The bar is cool. The food is fabulous. The service is professional. The bar is pretty small, but that gives it a great feel. I'm not one to venture to mixed drinks often, but my fellow patrons were very pleased. The selection of beer was quite nice. Quite a few on tap, only one empty at the time. The prices on drinks weren't awful either. I recieved the fried chicken and waffles and it was breathtaking. I have never had the dish before served at a restaurant, but I can't imagine it could be better. The chicken was golden, moist on the inside, full of flavor, and served on a bed of waffle goodness. There wasn't alot of "syrup" but I don't think there was supposed to. A bunch of sugar would have just masked the savory goodness. The service was really nice. The support staff for the event was on the younger side, but so helpful and considerate. They didn't complain, argue, or disappear. They provided quality assistance for the entire room full of guests. The bartenders were also really nice and profesional. The only disapointment I could suggest was the restrooms. I know I know, the building is old and its difficult/expensive to renovate sometimes. They functioned flawlessly and were reasonably clean, however they did not accomodate a large number of guests simultaneously without wait. But its not bad at all. In conclusion, my experience at John's City Diner was wonderful. I was invited for a wedding rehearsal dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it. The bar is cool, service proffesional, and food so fabulous. I enjoyed the diner's appearance, however the restrooms could use some improvement. Overall, I would go back and encourage others to do so. Just invite me next time you go.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham and for the quality of food they serve, the prices couldn't be more reasonable. In the past I have visited John's during lunch hours and have usually gotten the club sandwich which is quite sizable with a side of fries that are presented nicely. On my most recent visit, I dined at John's for dinner and tried the trout that was also very delicious. The overall location couldn't be more perfect, with close proximity to downtown attractions and 2nd Ave N. It even has a painting of "It's nice to have you in Birmingham" on the side of the building which is perfect for photo opportunities.

I've always heard that this restaurant served delicious food.So I invited my sister and mother to join me and my granddaughter. Well that must have been back in the day. The crispy duck was small and dry. If the menu had stated it was a leg quarter I would have avoided it. You would think it would have been moist at least. My mother had the pork chop, it was a nice portion but dry and flavorless. My sister had the duck and hers was even smaller than mine. As I had never been there before I didn't realize the kid's menu was on the picture the host had given my granddaughter to color. So I ordered her the chicken and waffles which was half a chicken. That was fine the problem was that it was undercooked. So I sent it back and they dropped it back in the fryer. When the server brought it back it looked very unattractive. It was really nothing special about that entrée. As we were leaving when I discovered the kid's menu. I said to my family you would think the server would have made a point to let me know about the kid's menu when he saw that I ordered that for a six yr old. I guess I could have asked, too. The oyster Rockefeller was good.

Wasn't really wow'd by this place at all. We went during restaurant week and were hoping to try some really good food for the low! All I left with, was the low! I started with a Caesar salad. Nothing that made this stand out at all. Actually, a Caesar doesn't even have to stand out, but this one was just blah. For my entree I had Trout Almondine - Fresh rainbow trout crusted in almonds, pan fried and topped with lemon butter sauce. Served with smashed potatoes and baby green beans. Just a complete lack of flavor overall. Everything was prepared nicely, but didn't taste like much. Service was pretty good, however. The things that made my evening was the fact that we were celebrating my boy's birthday and the Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout that accompanied my dinner. Not sure I'd return, just because my first experience wasn't too hot. Granted, I only had 1 menu entree... but certainly this can't be yet another locale that the city of Birmingham has hyped above it's means can it? *shrugs*

I ordered the chicken and waffles...delicious! The chicken was moist/tender and packed with the right flavors, crispy waffle, with spiked balsamic maple syrup drizzled on it ...so good! My only regret, I ate so much I had no room for dessert :( I went back for dessert...had the White chocolate bread pudding...amazing! It has golden raisins, pecans, and white chocolate ganache...will not be disappointed. Surprisingly not a overly sweet dessert...well balanced and so satisfying!

I grew up on southern comfort food, and I like to think I know what's good and what isn't. And living in San Francisco has spoiled me when it comes to quality. This place does southern comfort food and does it better than just about any I've had anywhere. I had the chicken and waffles, which were so good I almost wept. My side of skillet corn was ridiculously good. Their "soon to be world famous" meatloaf didn't taste like meatloaf so much as chopped steak, but it was insanely delicious. It deserves to be famous just for flavor. And their mac-n-cheese was also ridiculously good. They had a pretty good selection of desserts. We ordered one of each for the table and shared, and I liked everything I tasted. I washed them all down with some nice Willett's bourbon, a nice surprise on an already impressive list of beverages. I'm trying to talk them into franchising to the West Coast!

I didn't have the opportunity to stay for dinner but I was there for drinks. The facility reserved a room for us and even gave us happy hour price for our first drink. I enjoyed several glasses of the pinot noir which hit the spot after a grueling day at the office. I paid around $28 for (2) glasses of wine and a Johnnie Walker Black scotch drink. The decor inside is what you would expect in a diner but in my opinion just a tad nicer. The parking can be a little tricky since it is downtown but after five it's not too bad. I am looking forward to having lunch or dinner there soon and will update my review after.

This place is such an awesome throwback to the diners of yore. The vibe is retro but still current, and the food is spot on. Definitely get the house made pork skins and the roasted corn grits! My only complaint is that they seemed very understaffed. While we still got great service from Phyliss behind the bar, she was also helping to wait on tables and all the servers seemed stretched thin. Again, our service did not suffer but I'm sure it's no fun to be pulled in twenty different directions at work.

John's is one of my favorite spots to eat in Birmingham. Good southern food, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere. I have tried multiple dishes and one of my favorites is the Three Little Piggies Mac n Cheese. Flavorful and filling. The bread pudding is one of my favorite desserts.

Bobby Humphry just left as I was being seated! The pork chop was good and the overall meal was good! Definitely worth coming back!

Great find! Stopped here for dinner on our way to Atlanta. Cool urban atmosphere and interesting menu. We ordered the pork chop and roasted chicken. They were both very tasty. Tried the sweet potatoes and green beans which were also very good. Very friendly staff!!!

It should have never taken me so long to try this place out! What a gem! We sat in the bar for one of the best happy hour experiences. 4p-7p, M-F. $3 beers, $5 for (all) wines, AND half price small plates! We tried the Oysters "Rock-a-Fella," Not Your Mama's Mac & Cheese, and the Fish and Chips - all of which we would get again. This was plenty for two people. John's proved to be a cozy place with good beers and wines. I really hope more people make it down to John's. I cannot wait to tey the meatloaf!

How this place isn't packed for dinner I'll never understand. I made a reservation for a Wednesday evening thinking by the looks of the photos and the ratings it would surely be necessary. We showed up at 6:30 and we were the only table in the dining room. I think two others came in while we were there but oh well, that's everyone else's loss. Also lowers the chances of receiving terrible service which seems to be the norm in Birmingham--not a problem at John's. We started off with the pork belly and grits app. The pork belly was a little drier than I like but it was an ample portion, had some maple syrup on it which is always a great touch and the grits were absolutely incredible. A winner. Drinks were also great. I can't remember what I had but it was a whisky specialty cocktail and it was really good. For dinner I had the pork chop and subbed for the sweet potatoes which were really good. Pork chop itself was nothing special but adequate, it a had a nice maple glaze which was tasty. My wife had the big winner. Chicken and waffles. The waffle was an enormous, fluffy, cheddar waffle--I've never tasted anything like it nor have I ever had anything with a texture like that. The chicken was juicy and amazing. Hands down one of the better meals I've had here in town. Although not the healthiest of choices--this is definitely comfort food with a chef's touch, they do seem to care about the source of their ingredients--chicken was local, free range and I believe the beef on the menu was grassfed. Will definitely try to get back to explore more of their interesting menu.

I can't say enough about this place. From the second we walk in the staff was exemplary. Having said that it could have been a barn with chimpanzees waiting on us and I would still go back for that Cubano and the bread pudding.

I love this place! I've only been here about 3 times but everytime I've had amazing food and service. I love the atmosphere too. First lets start with the chicken & waffles. The waffle is pretty large and actually has cheddar in it, you also have the option to add bacon bits. You better come hungry or be ready to share because on top of the waffle, which could be a meal by itself, is two delicious pieces of fried chicken. The Fish & Chips is a small plate and I think the portions are a little better on this because we didn't have any left overs. The fries are beer battered and are probably the best I've had in Birmingham. I haven't had a cocktail here yet but I hear good things about it so I'll be sure to check them out on my next visit...

After having a tiny teaser of chicken & waffles at Brewfest, I knew I would have to visit this place. I was a bit worried I might have to fight the business lunch crowd (did I put enough quarters in the parking meter!?), but I arrived before noon and had no problem being seated promptly. I had a rather tough time with the menu, because I wanted chicken & waffles.... no, wait..... the peacemaker..... no, wait..... that macaroni and cheese sounds fantastic....... but they have a Cuban sandwich!!!.... maybe the pork chop...... Aaaarrgghhhh! Entrees came out to the lawyer men at the table next to me, and I decided that the portion size of the chicken & waffles was just too much (good excuse to go for the Cuban). Now, I might fancy myself a connoisseur of Cuban sandwiches, but really, I don't think I've ever had a truly terrible one. Follow the basics, jazz it up if you wanna....I usually can't turn one down. No exception today. This baby came to the table in a snazzy little tray, piled high with meat, accompanied by a not-too- big, not-too-small, but juuuust right size can of beer-battered fries. Only thing to complain about was the cheese wasn't melted (which would've been my preference) and the pickles were served on the side (the Cuban sandwich must have pickles!!!). The sweet tea tasted like sweetened tea - exactly like good sweet tea should - and not tea-tinted sugar water. Throughout my meal, folks trickled in, but it did not get jam-packed like I kind of expected. It was busy enough to signify it's status as a downtown lunch staple, but didn't get too buzzy for me to think I needed to be in a bigger hurry. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere.... especially the Earth, Wind, & Fire and the Commodores piped through the PA. Nice little spot that I can see myself returning to on a regular basis, and bringing friends next time! (Okay, okay, so I didn't eat all of my fries... doesn't mean they're weren't delicious!)

Tasty food in an updated diner. Definitely some fun and delicious twists on classic dishes. Our service was subpar but I think that was a fluke based on the particular server. I would definitely go again, and recommend you do too!

I *love* the revamp of this restaurant. Miles above what it was before. The atmosphere is dark, modern, but a little romantic, making it a good spot for a date or a reunion with old friends. Service was very slow when I went but the food was well-worth the wait. I love the classy but still Southern comfort style menu. A great addition to the Birmingham food scene!

I wish 0 stars was an option. I was visiting from out of town for a race. We made reservations and arrived on time to a half empty restaurant. There was no hostess and we stood... and waited. Several minutes later someone came and told us it would be "a few minutes" because they had been slammed. I told her we had a reservation and was told it would still be a few minutes. We sat for 15 minutes, amidst empty tables and idle servers. Finally after having no one come over to check in, we left. Horrible service and the saddest part is the staff didn't seem to care.

One of my new favorite local dinner places with a pretty sweet bar. Service is excellent- food is amazing. - chicken & waffles were solid. Grey Goose martini was just right! Only thing misleading were the beautiful jars of picked hot peppers next to us in display but the restaurant doesn't offer any hot peppers or sauce except (store bought) vinegar pickled in not so spicy hot peppers (brining my own hot sauce/peppers next time)... Otherwise - this place ROCKS!

We had a great dinner here last week. We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and unique take on traditional menu items. I would strongly recommend the tater tots- sooo good! I had the meatloaf and while it was delicious, it didn't remind me of meat loaf at all- more Salisbury steak or chopped steak. Still good, just not what I was expecting. I look forward to going back and trying other items.

Best meatloaf I've ever had in my life. Sure it's the only meatloaf I've ever had, but it was pretty damned good. Don't skip on the Mac n cheese, but stick with the appetizer. It's rich and more than enough for one person.

Some friends of mine were visiting from Sacramento and we decided to have dinner here after we discovered that El Barrio had a two hour wait. I'm so glad that things worked out the way they did. We were seated immediately, service was fast but not pushy, the food was amazing. My friend is pregnant and she ordered the chicken and waffles. I've never seen a more contented pregnant lady in a restaurant.

Pork rinds were a great starter, but I was blown away by the chicken and waffles. Chicken was cooked perfectly...crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Balsamic syrup was a nice change as well. Coupled with very reasonable happy hour beer prices John's is hard to beat.

This was my first time in Birmingham and was brought to this place. Started with fancy bacon, roasted garlic hummus, and pimento cheese as appetizers. They were pretty good. My main entree was the mahi mahi special, which is not on the main menu. It was very bland even with the pesto sauce. I love my mahi mahi, but I could barely taste anything. The grits that came with the dish were actually very good, but they were more like "fancy grits." The fried pickles that were ordered on the side weren't bad. For dessert, I had the pecan pie sundae. It was okay. Nothing special, and I love my desserts. Maybe I didn't get the right entree and dessert.

Our meals were delicious (pork chop and meatloaf), the drinks weren't crazy expensive and there was no wait on a Friday night. We were pleasantly surprised with our experience and will definitely be returning to try more options! A great choice for switching things up when you want no fuss, yummy food and don't want to fight the crowds of the on trend spots.

Ok went back... It's better than we remembered! Service is outstanding! The drinks were tasty and stiff... The food even better! In a town raised in southern cooking I challenge you to find a better chicken and waffles! Best in town!

First time in Alabama, on business, and first time eating here. I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. When you first walk up to this place, it does not seem like much. Then when you walk in, you even feel a little more weary. Not that this place was horrible looking inside, but it was just basic. It looked like a little hole in the wall with family style seating as an older diner would. However, once the very knowledgable waiter came to us, I began to become a little more comfortable. The waiter began to describe some very appetizing food. I started with the sweet heat pork skins. As goofy as that sounded for an appetizer, it was excellent and not so much that you could not eat your meal later. It was a pleasant snack. For my entree I had the Springer Mountain Farms Chicken. Everything here seems to stress their hormone free, grass fed food in their menu. I think it definitely helped because my food was excellent. Food was served hot unlike another restaurant I went to recently that even cost a little more. Overall, I was very impressed with the food and service. I would definitely come here again!

My husband had the chicken and waffles which were delicious! I ordered the shrimp and fries. The shrimp was very greasy, probably wouldn't order it next time. We had the pecan pie turnover for dessert and it was amazing!!!

Atmosphere: Very much what you'd expect out of a city diner, located in the heart of downtown B'ham. A bit generic in the decor, not really hip but also not bland either, just kind of right in the middle. I came in for lunch and there was an good mix of people from business casual clothing to jeans and tshirts. I chose to sit at the bar for lunch bc I was dining alone. Drinks: The beer list was great and local, featuring local breweries such as Good People, Cahaba, and the newest to is lineup, Trim Tab. I had a Trim Tab IPA and a Cahaba IPL and both were excellent. The beer was the reason I came here, I was traveling through and wanted a lunch with some good craft beer and for this it did not disappoint. Wasn't all that impressed with liquor selection though, very generic spirits and cocktails, but it's rare I find a good cocktail bar with drinks worth paying good money for, so I usually stick with beer. Food: I ordered the Cubano sandwich and subbed the fries with the roasted corn grits, which I read a recommendation for on here. The grits were great, seasoned just right with bits of sweet roasted corn throughout. The Cuban was ok. My first problem with it was that it didn't have mustard of any kind. Instead, it had a cilantro herb aioli. The sandwich was classic in almost every way but this. The ham was supposedly smoked in house, and both the ham and pork were local, however both were drier than I like and in my opinion my least favorable thing about the sandwich and meal. Verdict: I'd give John's City Diner a 3.5 if I could, bit since I can only rate in whole numbers, it gets a 3. I would come back and order the same beers, but next time I'll try something different.

Joined some friends for dinner recently--and really enjoyed our John's City experience!! My husband and I had our first date here--and it was great to remember that wonderful time :) The four of us shared the Pimiento cheese appetizer and Potato chips appetizer. Both were very tasty, although I loved the pimiento cheese the best. YUM!! My hubby and I shared a Greek salad and the Chicken & waffle entree everyone raves about. The greek salad was good, but I wish I had requested the dressing on the side. The portions were a nice size and I would have enjoyed taking home the leftover salad, but it definitely wasn't going to be good the next day. I enjoyed the chicken and waffle entree. Tasty flavors and a unique dish in Birmingham. My hubby thought it was...ok. We decided to share the Dark chocolate bread pudding for our dessert. Hubs doesn't typically like bread pudding, so I was surprised. I think he'll be sticking with that. We were surprised at how dry it was...I'm used to bread pudding being a bit more moist. Honestly, it just wasn't that exciting. BUT, overall, we enjoyed our meals and experience. Loved the laughter shared at dinner--and look forward to returning to try something new ;)

I had a great time here for lunch with my sister. I had pork chops and they were fantastic. Very juicy!! Our server was very friendly and told us what was good on their menu. I have so much food I was able to take some home with me. The atmosphere was great with dim lights. This would be a perfect place for date night....

Oh my, y'all. I'm not sure I can even convey through words how good my lunch was at John's today. I'm from Alabama. I KNOW greens. These were the best I've ever had. Seriously- I feel like I just cheated on my grandmother. The fried oysters & sauce were perfect. I will be back every time I'm in Birmingham.

Chicken. And. Waffles. It's a dish that I would never order anywhere else, but would eat from John's City Diner all three meals a day, if it wouldn't kill me. If you haven't try it, do. Seriously. I only wish they have better hours.

I was in town for a day and wanted a taste of Birmingham, so after a quick search of the net, I decided John's diner was the place for me. Being unfamiliar with the area, I had a bit of a challenge finding the location. My GPS wanted me to go through an alley, when I could have very easily gone down the main street, but good thing I found it before giving up! I found parking right in front of the restaurant. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, this is a BIG deal in a downtown area! I was seated quickly and the wait staff was almost immediate in greeting me. She was very nice and helpful with the menu selection. I ordered the pork skins for an appetizer. Now I even surprised myself since this isn't something I normally order, but I was feeling adventurous and I am not disappointed that I went there! The were warm, spicy, and crispy! They were slightly sweet which gave them great contrast! I ate the WHOLE basket by myself even though I was expecting a full entree!! I also ordered the pork chop with extra green beans (I didn't want the smashed potatoes) and it was just incredible! I was facetiming with my husband while eating my lunch (Yes, I am one of those...) and he was ready to jump on a plane and come have lunch with me! I already told him that I am bringing him to John's Diner next time I have a business trip to the area!

Ok ... This place is awesome! Great vibe and atmosphere. Service was great! Sat in Ralph's section and he was top notch! I ordered the meatloaf and I was NOT disappointed. Sooo good! Hubby ordered 3 little pigs and he licked the plate clean! Great spot downtown with some nice local craft beers to pick from!

I've been to John's twice now and look forward to going back! The first time was within my first couple of weeks of moving to Bham, still a little overwhelmed and lost in a new city. I absolutely loved my experience here! My meal was lick-your-plate good, and my leftovers were equally delicious the next day. Our table got a pimento cheese appetizer - I'd consider myself a discerning judge for a good pimento, and John's stood up to the test! I ordered the pork chop entree for my dinner - tender, fabulous sauce, and perfect sides (I subbed grits for potatoes). Huge meal, enough for a full dinner the next day. Best part, very reasonably priced for a quality (and quantity!) dinner. I do think I ordered the best out of my table, the rest of the group enjoyed their food but wasn't raving quite as much. My only complaint is that John's is sort of off by itself in the downtown area. Perfectly safe, but just not much to wander around to afterwards. Will definitely go back and am really looking forward to returning to a great find downtown!

  • Kimberly A.

Upscale Southern food that does not disappoint. I'm a big fan of chicken and waffles and this lived up to my expectations. A savory waffle served with fried chicken with a great sauce. My only recommendation would be that they ramp up the heat in the sauce for just a little more kick. The vibe is very downtown. It's in a fairly non-nondescript building and the lighting is dark. There is a happy hour available in the afternoons, but only in the small bar section. The staff is friendly enough that you don't really notice the food takes a bit long to come out.

While staying in Birmingham, I asked staff at the Sheraton Hotel for good LOCAL food and was directed to John's. Boy, I'm glad they did. The food was fresh and fabulous and satisfied my urge for good food, southern food (at least my conception of it). Had to have the chicken and waffle. Crispy, juicy chicken over a cheddar waffle. To die for! Was convinced to have aside of fried okra, too. I love okra (fried or steamed) and this stuff was tabu. Had to have a complete calorie bomb so finished it off with peanut butter pie. If my travels (or yours) takes you to the "Magic City," give John's a try.

We were visiting for a couple of days in Birmingham and found this not too far from our lodging at the Tutwiler Hotel. (As a long-ago Birmingham resident, I remember this when it was the historic "John's.") On a Thursday evening at 8pm it was not crowded, so we got right in and had a delicious dinner of mac & cheese (a specialty--don't reject if you usually don't like mac & cheese) and fabulous, fabulous white chocolate bread pudding. Others in our group enjoyed a steak and the yummy mashed potatoes. We dined with our teen sons, and all four of us really liked this. It was a great casual place--easy, but attractive atmosphere (not really "diner" like, but a little more upscale), quiet, with attentive service. Price was reasonable. No complaints at all, and we will definitely be back next time we're in town.

This is always our go-to spot before heading to the Alabama Theater. Very surprised their gumbo is pretty tasteful...being from south Louisiana, I'm critical of anyone making Cajun cuisine! Haven't been to their huge dinner/beer event yet...it's $75 and a few hours long to partake in all kinds of food and libations

Awesome Restaurant! Very Cool Diner with a unique menu! Extremely friendly staff with excellent service! Delicious Food!! Rachel was a wonderful server!! Great eatery located in the heart of downtown. Central to Loft District and boasting some pretty stellar Southern flavor. Two words: Chicken n' Waffles. One more word: Meatloaf. Awesome craft beer selection. Great service. Ridiculous portions. Eat up, y'all!

Really disappointed in 3 out of 4 meals. I trolled through yelp reviews and was led to johns city diner. Not sure if it was a very off night, but I had to double check to be sure we were At the right place. Ordered the fried okra to start. Flavorless. Also had the pimiento cheese. Inedible. The gumbo was sent back. Husband had the meatloaf and it tasted like it was previously frozen and heated in a microwave. Didn't taste newly made at all. The Caesar salad was mediocre but edible. The only thing I liked was our waitress and the Mac n cheese. A thoroughly disappointing meal.

Came here with family tonight and loved it! Among us we shared the NYM's macaroni and cheese, the tomato salad (amazing; if it's tomato season, order this), Pimento Cheese, Crispy Duck, Chicken and Waffles, and Mangrove Snapper with Blueberry BBQ Sauce (very interesting and delicious sauce!) All the food is southern with an interesting chef's twist. I highly recommend the Pimento Cheese, and have heard great things about the meatloaf. As for those here complaining about the portions, I don't know what you're talking about. The portions are huge! Unless of course you're ordering something on the part of the menu that says "Small Plate"; in which case you shouldn't expect a huge platter. The food here is delicious, I'm surprised there's not more of a crowd! Come on down to John's and give it a try!

Dined here with a large group right at 5 pm on a weeknight. There was not another soul in the place. I assume it's busy for lunch and not so much for dinner when the business district is emptied out. Those who ordered chicken & waffles seemed disappointed, although I'd like to try them myself--looked delicious. I had the flat iron steak, which I regret after seeing some of the other entrees. My wife had the pork chops, and said they were awesome--but she doesn't meat (had to do it...sorry) many pork chops she doesn't like. Will definitely return and try to save room for bread pudding

  • Shella S.

Was not impressed. After reading all the rave reviews about the Chicken & Waffles, I thought I would try it. What a disappointment. Another example of a restaurant doing too much to add their own personal twist to a classic favorite. The cheddar waffled, should've been just a plain waffle, and the balsamic maple syrup....eeeeeck...should've been regular maple syrup. Call me old fashioned, but the changes to the original ruined the experience for me.

Well worth the stop!! We love a diner but this place has a for real chef. We had the free range chicken and the crispy duck. Absolutely delicious. We picked it clean. The service was superb- thank you Ralph! And the food arrived very quickly. We are on a cross country road trip and have eaten very well thanks to yelp- but this takes the cake. Would have tried the pecan turnover sundae but we were too stuffed.

Thank you Yelp ap and all the Yelpers. We got into town late, found our hotel, and used the ap to see places that were open with $ or $$. It was the closest one with a good rating. Yay! An excellent place. The chicken and grits were my favorite part of the meal, yet I believe you will be happy with whatever you might order. Nice ambiance. Friendly staff. Food comes out fast.

We found this on Yelp while driving from Atlanta to Memphis, and it's great. My husband had the chicken and waffles (and I tried some), and it was as awesome as everyone says. My chicken pot pie was great, too, and our server could not have been nicer. Very solid place.

I took my Mom here for lunch during a genealology conference at the BJCC. Mom had the the White BBQ Chicken and I ordered up some Chicken & Waffles with a side of Roasted Corn Grits; Mom had a side of the slaw. First of all, the ambience in the place is very nice. It would be a great place for date nite and I intend to take my Wife there one night soon, perhaps combined with a bit of Christmas shopping. The wait was a bit long for the sparse number of diners, but we came in just after the lunch rush at about 1 p.m. so I'm willing to write that off as the kitchen was in recovery mode. The food is really good here. The fried chicken that comes with the Chicken & Waffles is just outstanding. It's coated with what appears to be a corn flake style batter, but it's expertly fried. By that I mean crispy on the outside; moist and flavorful on the inside but not due to simply absorbing the cooking oil - not "greasy" due to improper frying like a lot of places wind up doing. The waffle was soft and flavorful, a perfect complement to the chicken. The only issue I had with the dish was the sauce. It's billed as a "balsamic spiked maple syrup". I think the sauce I got that day was a little more than "spiked" with balsamic vinegar. It imparted a somewhat displeasing odor to the waffle (think malt vinegar) and could have used a heavier dose of the maple syrup base, in my opinion. I'd call it minor to the overall taste experience, however, because the chicken is the real star here. Speaking of chicken, I got to sample a bit of Mom's White BBQ Chicken ('cuz Moms always share with their kid, ya know) and it was even better than the fried version. She ate just about every bite (that she could - it's a HUGE portion) and remarked several times that it was some of the best she's had. As far as sides go, we both were puzzled by the cut on the slaw, but that was really just a lack of understanding. I've since read that it's supposed to be a signature "angel hair" slaw. It was fresh and the sauce was outstanding, which I also understand to be a "John's original". I always wondered if the sauce I saw in stores in this area was from this place, and was pleased to find out it is. Try some on a burger, you'll be glad you did. The roasted corn grits were piping hot and a real treat also. I've never thought of putting roasted corn in grits but it really does elevate the side to something more savory and different than one usually associates with grits. It reminded me a lot of the "dried corn" side I got when I was in Lancaster, PA at the "Good and Plenty". By the way, if you're a transplant to the South and you turn your nose up at grits, let me take this opportunity to tell you that either you really haven't had good grits yet, or you're possibly an elitist who needs to get beyond stereotypes and understand the new South (and if you're still feeling superior... google "scrapple" before you say another word). Service was very attentive and pleasant; I've no complaints there. My glass never ran dry, which is my First Law of ServerDynamics: "Amount of tip is directly proportional to the derivative of liquid volume in my glass with respect to time." (Yeah, I know, terrible pun... but I'm an engineer and I try to work in as many technical references as I can in these reivews to justify all that money I spent on my education. It makes me feel warm inside. Well, a little anyway.) Even though John's is billed is a diner, don't go there expecting a $4 blue plate, or cheap food. And when I say cheap, I mean inferior. The prices are more elevated than an average diner, but so is the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking stuff yourself for a few bucks, go find a chain restaurant somewhere. If you're like me and willing to recognize exceptional, freshly prepared food and attentive service with your wallet, you'll be happy here. To borrow a phrase, "It's a classy joint." And you can expect the dining experience to be the same in all respects.

I'm from DC and my girlfriend is from Paris. We can't say enough great things about Johns Diner. The food has been excellent every time we have gone and the service equally professional. If you want great chicken and waffles, go to Johns!

Good laaaaaaaaaawd! This place is legit! The Chicken and Waffles is bananas. The chicken is unbelievably flavorful, and the green beans I ordered on the side were a great compliment. Plus my server Donna couldn't have been sweeter. Let me tell you one thing about Birmingham, the people here -- at least from what I've experienced --- are some of the nicest, most hospitable around. Places like Johns make enduring the heat and humidity more palatable. If you're in Birmingham and want some great southern cooking -- as judged by this California native -- come to Johns!

I've been going to John's for SO many years and have never had a bad meal! I love the corn bread! If you are in the Birmingham area make sure and try John's!

When I first moved to Birimingham, I was told that I should go to John's City Diner. I never did. But on a recent trip back, my boyfriend and I went. I wish I had gone sooner! The salads (I had Garden, he had Caesar) were delicious with ingredients that were clearly fresh. Our dinners (Meatloaf and Trout Amandine) were great. The desserts were my favorite part. My Peanut Butter Pie was fantastic, and his White Chocolate Bread Pudding was amazing. We couldn't decide which was better. The only thing we regret is that we did not try John's City Diner sooner. I know in future Birmingham trips, this will be a regular stop.

The food rocks. Great chicken &waffles, fried oysters. Good draft beer selection. We were visiting Birmingham on Valentine's day and decided to try John's. Great choice.

After seeing all the great reviews I'm hoping maybe my experience was atypical. Went with family for my birthday, and overall I was satisfied except for one fatal flaw--overcooked fried chicken. I mean it was literally black. I thought maybe at first they intended it to be this way because both me and my brother's came this way, and seriously who would serve something that black without intentionally doing it. But if it was intentional then my recommendation would be to stop. We were a bit taken aback by just how darkly it was cooked. And surprised any respectable (which I thought this place was) kitchen would serve something this obviously overcooked. The burning and overcooking didn't affect the dark meat as much as it did the white meat, which was just so dry, tough, and chewy that it was rather unpleasant. Further, we couldn't taste the balsamic that was supposedly in the maple syrup. But other than that, my mom enjoyed her fried oysters, my dad loved the meatloaf (though he thought his side of fried green tomatoes was just a bit too small--only 2). I also had a side of roasted corn grits which was really good and different than normal grits in a really good way. Finally I had their signature dessert, the white chocolate bread pudding and loved it, though I wish it had a little more white chocolate ganache. Aside from the food the wait staff was friendly and quick and attentive on everything, really great there, but I thought the booths were just a bit too small to comfortably sit 4 people, so go for a table if you have more than 2 people if possible. I'm not going to hurry back, but I wouldn't say no to going back as I still want to try some of the things on the menu, like the mac and cheese and some of their pies. So it was good not great, but I get the feeling this was an off night for the kitchen, so when I get the chance to try it again I'll revisit my review.

Amazing place. Great beer selection, apps were off the charts and the chicken and waffles was so good it was stupid. Our servers were so friendly and attentive. I'll be back.

The service was good. I wouldn't go back. Nothing spectacular. Food was VERY greasy, but is the south. Maybe that is normal here.

Dat food! Why is this place empty?! I realize it's Tuesday night, but this place oughta be packed.

Dropped in for dinner alone while visiting for business recently. The place was empty as it was almost 8pm. I will make a point to eat here at least once every time I visit Birmingham!!! Food was fresh and delicious, beer was cold. Only complaint was they need to upgrade their DirecTV subscription to cover more sports channels.

I spent a lot of time trying to find a place to eat in Birmingham and we finally decided on John's City Diner. It was the right choice. Make no mistake, this is not 'diner food'. Everything we ordered was well prepared and delicious. I will absolutely be back when I next find myself in Birmingham.

I have known about John's for ages, but have just never tried it because I thought it was only known for its famous slaw and dressing. Little did I know that everything on the menu was good. I guess I had never been there as well because it was downtown and we lived in Shelby County. I was hesitant to order the fish and chips, because I did not want to be disappointed in the quality. To my reassurance, my buddies kept telling me that they were good. They had been here before, but I was still questioning the order when I was telling our waitress that was what I wanted. They were not greasy, but battered just right. I also added the greens(out of this world) and another side of which I am not recalling(CHIPS, lol, french fries) as I went to this restaurant exactly one week ago. I sampled the fried green tomatoes from a friend and it was good. ONE thing that is the mark of a good restaurant is no matter what you order it tastes good. John's does this superbly. To finish we had a slice of peanut butter pie, which is tough to get right as well, but I was pleasantly surprised. I will go back to John's when I get a chance. Can't wait to try something else extra yummy or just go with the Fish and chips.

I have been to John's City Diner on several occasions and have also attended a couple of their beer dinners, which the chef/owner runs just about every month or so. The food is exceptional and the owner is passionate about his food and his menu. I highly recommend the roasted corn grits, the chicken and waffles and the cubano. I will also be attending the Back 40 Beer Dinner this weekend. It's a frickin 5 course dinner with a pint of locally brewed beer with every course. I've never been disappointed by John's and can't say enough about it.

Wow. Yes indeed this is great step back into foodville. Please note: the address will throw you off this place is in downtown BHM. On 112 Richard Arrington. Great menu, interesting selection. Fish n Chips great chips great meatloaf...wow! Even the burger was nice. As others have stated, go here versus most others as it is a treat. Btw, wait staff was fun friendly and knowledgable.

Stopped of in b-ham on our way to nashville and was looking for a nice, comfort food place with some character. A local intellectual at Metro Bistro suggested we go to John's, and it was exactly what we were looking for. He also suggested we get the duck, which is first roasted and then quickly fried to get it the perfect crispness, and it did not disappoint. A good selection of drinks and varied food items was perfect with a setting of a slightly used, but clean and elegant diner. The sides were all great and the waitstaff very friendly and pleasant. The intellectual also gave us a good tip: its never very crowded in there, but don't let the lack of a crowd dissuade you. Will keep this one in the back pocket for when we come to or pass thru birmingham again. Oh, and info on biz is incorrect on yelp. They do take credit cards.

In my constant pursuit of happiness, I sometimes consider moving closer to the parental units. Unfortunately, my Manhattan-bred father and San Francisco-ite mother found it necessary to move to Mountain Brook, Alabama several years ago. Something about my dad's company and money and country living and peace and quiet. Notsomuch. But there are golf courses, great shopping (Saks, Parisian, Tiffany, and all the other usual high-end greats), and excellent day spas/salons within about 10 minutes of their home. What there is not so much of is good California cuisine or upscale comfort food. Enter John's City Diner. Sleek, modern, and minimalistic, this John appears to have taken a cue from big city establishments. You wear it well, John. You're totally my type. I love this place. I think they have a height/weight/appearance requirement for working here, as the waitstaff are a regular bunch of Adonises and barbie dolls. This is much more than a diner. This is an attractive treasure trove of modern spins on standard diner fare. Their meatloaf is second only to Blue Plate in San Francisco and I would gladly cut a bitch for those creamy dreamy mashed potatoes, which I have been known to order numerous sides of and live off of for days when I'm in town. I've tried a bunch of their salads and they're all generously portioned and delicious but I can't justify straying from the meatloaf. The bread pudding is a house specialty and usually delicious (there was one off day but hey, we all make mistakes...). For a "diner" in Alabama, they have a pretty decent wine list, and the markup is fair. Service is excellent and (as I already stated) bordering on too good looking. But when I have ever turned my nose up at a good looking man? John himself is charming, accommodating, and very funny. I may know a married lady in Mountain Brook with a bit of a crush on him (but ssh! Don't tell my dad!). John's is definitely on my list of "pros" in terms of making the move to Alabama. John, if you see this, feel free to overnight me some of those mashed potatoes!

Great food! The meatloaf and Mac n cheese are my favorites. I love that they're one of the few restaurants located downtown that are open for dinner. The only reason I don't eat there every week (besides the saturated fat intake) is because of the prices. Even for how tasty the food is, I think the prices are a tad too steep.

Stopped by for an early dinner. Shared meatloaf and veggie plate. Too much food for two but really enjoyed the roasted grits and the rest. I prefer meatloaf with old fashion ketchup type glaze. This was a wine reduction that hubby loved. Very good altogether. Will return for the food and the music selections they played.

I love John's City! It is seriously one of the gems of Birmingham and I hope it continues to be successful. Every time I'm there it doesn't seem very crowded so I'm always suggesting it to people and hoping others will see how great it is. The food is outstanding (a little pricey, but worth it), the service is friendly and fast, and the atmosphere is nice too. It's great for a date or drinks after work. I've only lived in Birmingham for a few months now, but have noticed that downtown seems a little dead for a city this size. I hope people will spend a little more time downtown and take advantage of living in such a great city! I know John's City is trying to be a part of the revitalizing of downtown and I think that's awesome! Keep up the good work!

I'm in Birmingham for the week with a conference and the food at the hotel restaurants is terrible. So myself and a colleague went out walking in downtown birmingham to find a place to eat...the place we were trying to go to was closed on monday night so we kept walking till we found some county clerk deputy's. We asked if anybody was open they told us Johns was. So Johns we went. The menu was fun and we did have a little trouble picking a dish each. The menu touted a soon to be famous meatloaf which sounded good but so did the chicken and waffles. My buddy asked between the Meatloaf or the Mac and Cheese. The waitress said to go with the mac and cheese. I asked her about the meatloaf or chicken, she said the chicken and waffles. I guess the meatloaf isn't completely ready to be famous. Well this was my first ever chicken and waffles and I maybe completely spoiled because this was amazing. My plate and my friends bowl were both empty. We're here till friday, I have a feeling I'll be back here at least one more time before the end of this trip and when the other groups of people are talking about where to go I will be pointing them towards John's the rest of the week. And after getting back to the Hotel and looking at the menu I wish we got dessert.

We went for Dinner last night, and it was great. Although, it would be helpful if they had a please wait to be seated sign. Because we waited for a while, and finally had a server tell us that someone would be right with us when we opted to just find a seat. The service was terrific once we sat down, and our party had the Chicken & Waffles, Pork Chops and Meatloaf and everyone loved their food. I had never had Chicken & Waffles, and wasn't disappointed with my first taste. The restaurant was a bit slow, which was sad because the food is absolutely wonderful. This is one restaurant not to miss in Birmingham! It is not your typical diner fare. It is 100% better!

very good dinner at John's...everything was done very nicely. The staff, food, and atmosphere was exactly what we the food doctor ordered. So what did we eat? Gumbo (VG), meatloaf (EX), pot roast (EX), ALL sides were excellent, and we finished it off with a bit of bread pudding. The perfect ending to a well prepared, proportional meal. I feel very comfortable recommending and returning!

If you are in downtown Birmingham, do yourself a favor and stop here. The atmosphere is nice, the prices reasonable, the wait staff friendly, and the food fantastic. The chicken and waffles was probably one of the best things that I have ever eaten in my life...honestly. It is my new death row meal. Unbelievable!

Great food and service. On the inside it doesn't look like your typical city diner. Very open, clean and welcoming space. This diner was highly recommended by the locals and I was not disappointed by any means. I have been back three times already in less than a month. My favorite meal is the shrimp and the grouper (one of the daily specials). The portions are pretty big also so you should definitely bring an appetite.

Went in for lunch. The menu has some interesting takes on classic dishes. The food quality was pretty good, the portions a little less than typically expected but adequate. It got pretty busy during a weekday lunch hour but the service kept up.

Very good. Very good food and service. They had a great appetizer, blue cheese chips. House made chips and a great white cheese sauce covered in freshly crumbled imported blue cheese and a mess or green onions. Huge! It could feed an army. Most of their dishes are very generous. Just like a dinner should be. My wife had a great upscale mac and cheese that she ended up eating for at least three days. I had a great piece of fish. I will go back for sure.
