Some friends of ours moved into a house a few blocks from this place and tried it. They loved it so much they invited us to go with them. Now it is our favorite Italian restaurant in Birmingham! The bread products were all fresh and bountiful. The cheeses used were tasty and plentiful. At some places the cheese feels like a melted block but not here. The sauces had a nice flavor, not too dull and not too tart. Just right. Portions were large enough that we could only eat half and had enough left for lunch the next day. It is located on a funky shaped block near the university. Parking can be challenging but it's location gives it added charm. I spoke to the owner and he and his staff were super friendly. Even if you aren't in the mood for Italian you should eat here!

This cozy little place is tucked away in the Glen Iris neighborhood. Me and my date had a wonderful experience. It's on the small side but that kind of adds some charm to it. I ordered the lasagna and it was very delicious and generously portioned. The marinara sauce on it truly made the dish and was full of flavor. The service was very prompt and nice as well. Another plus for this place was the prices. Your wallet won't be hurting and you will leave full and satisfied. Will be coming back.

Great neighborhood restaurant, the kind of place where you get the feel that the locals would prefer that it was still their little secret. The "standard" Italian dishes done like somebody's grandma Rosa had perfected them and served them to family. Lasagna and calzones so good they you wish you had ordered an extra serving so that there might have been leftovers to take home. Go when you need a soul - warming meal of comfort food that you can't duplicate at home!

Today was our first visit to Giuseppe's and it won't be our last. The cafe is quaint, the service was great and the food really darn good. The dining room is intimate and maybe seats 30 people. I went for spaghetti and meatballs and my wife got lasagna. Basic staples like these are a quick test of an Italian kitchen. Both were great. The spaghetti was a tad overcooked but the sauce was simply perfect. The lasagna couldn't have been better. Several tables were enjoying pizza that looked quite good.

I've seen this place several times when going to UAB with my husband. It looks like a hole in the wall that you really wouldn't consider going to for a good meal. Although I had never been before today, my husband had been here two or three times and said it was pretty good. I would definitely have to agree! We ordered the cheesy bread and the Giuseppe's Special 10" pizza. Both hit the spot. I think it's their marinara sauce. Between the two of us, we still had 3 slices of pizza and 1/4 of the cheesy bread left over and we went hungry. The service was great - very prompt, very polite. Lighting is dim, but bright enough to see your food.

We eat here often for lunch after a Pilates session. Their Cesar salad is the best I've found in Birmingham! The is Parmesan is freshly grated, the chicken is tender and plentiful and the dressing is outstanding! I'm addicted!

    One word = lasagna. Wow!

We were acknowledged right away and placed our order at the takeout counter. We were told that we could go sit anywhere we liked. The staff was very friendly. Restaurant was small and dimly lit. Windows had shades on them, making it even more dim in the restaurant. The emergency door was blocked by a table...weird. I ordered my first ever "real" Meatball sub (Subway doesn't count!) and it was absolutely delish! I was told that I could make mine a special and add a cold pasta side and a soda. I did. The bf tried to order a different sub with the special and was told that it didn't come with the special. Said okay and ordered a soda. Then the food comes and he has pasta on the side...? Thanks? I don't think we paid for it...! I would go back if I were in the area. Very tasty and friendly service.

I'll be bold here and say that, for the money, Giuseppe's Cafe has some of the best Italian food in Birmingham. Bettola is better. Bottega is better but you're paying 3x as much. Meatball sandwich is off the chain. Chicken Alfredo with pancetta is off the chain. Italian sub is off the chain. House calzone is hittin'. Didn't try the beer or wine (gotta' keep my figure), but I hear it's just fine. If you're visiting from a bigger city don't expect to be blown away, but you gotta' come here if you live in town and are Jonesin' for a go-to Italian spot. Boom. 4 stars. Well done.

My first time here was on Friday for lunch and it was fantastic! We sat outside and did not get much service, but when we did it was great. I will definitely be back here!

I always forget about this little place, then have to rediscover it every year. This is a wonderful little Italian restaurant. The pizza, calzones, and subs are great, as well as the dinner entrees. There is a limited, but varied wine list, as well decent selection of domestic and imported beer. Personally, I'd go for the Peroni here. Took my parents here tonight, they are picky about Italian, and both enjoyed their meals. I have to remember to visit more often.

Two pizzas, chicken marsala, and shrimp scampi. Perfect amount and subtle flavors. Real ingredients cooked superbly. Walking away happy.

I was in a mad dash to find some hearty food and this hit the spot. My date and I ordered a To-Go veggie pizza and some baked ziti. First, he was so impressed by how sweet they were on the phone to him. The order was ready on time, they checked us out with the same sweet and friendly attitude, and we chowed down. The baked ziti was not the best but the pizza was really good. You can dine there and the spot is pretty cute, so I am going to do that next time.

    Good stuff. Cheap, fantastic calzones.

  • carolyn h.

ok, it's cheap, the people that work there are really sweet and the food is good. It's not the best Italian you will ever have in the world. but for what you are spending and the fact that it's a hole in the wall, it's awesome. Their pasta dishes are huge so if you aren't super hungry you can share. Also, I recommend the baked feta. We loved it.

  • David W.

Had the Italian Stallion sub and pasta salad. Phenomenal! Can't wait to go back and try some of the entrees.

Best pizza in Birmingham, a little bit out of the way but worth the drive. I've been going for many years and it is always great.

Cozy Hole-in-the-wall near UAB. Wife and I had the meatball sub which I devoured and am still craving a week later. Kids enjoyed the pizza, which was average by my standard. The space could get crowded on a busy day but had a friendly atmosphere and better than average fare.

I went here with my boyfriend and it was really good. The fried feta is delicious but I did expect more out of their marinara sauce. All and all it was a good date night.

Doesn't look like much but was a Definatly a surprise. The food, atmosphere, and service were all amazing! We are from out of town just stopping through to visit family for the night and sure appreciate yelp and the reviewers for their advice.

Best pizza in Birmingham. I'm not kidding. And they'll walk it over to you if you'd like to go have a drink at the bar next door. What's not to love?

Great place that's been around for quite a while. I thought the food was pretty good, but the prices were great--dinner for two plus a glass of wine for under $30. The spaghetti was ok, but I'm not a lover of spaghetti anyway. The chicken pesto calzone was very good and pretty large, so I'd suggest that instead. There were all the typical Italian dishes, Manicotti, Pizza, Fetucinni, Tiramisu, and Cannoli. I'd love to go back and try some other dishes. Also, no waiting on a Friday night about 9 when we went. Check it out if you're an Italian lover.

Omg, is this place for real? Yes, it is. Delicious food at reasonable prices, right there in your neighborhood if you live in Glen Iris. Is it worthy of Michelin star? Maybe not. But it tastes better than Olive Garden, while being freshly made and much more delicious. The lasagna is enough to feed 2 people, but if you are like me you will still try to eat it all yourself in one sitting because it's just that god. Restaurant is small and has a homey feel. You may have to wait at popular times without a reservation. Definitely enjoyed this place!

Great Italian restaurant. A little hole in the wall with inexpensive, tasty food. Pizza and lasagna are delicious. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good, inexpensive Italian restaurant in Birmingham.

  • Daina M.

Calzones the size of your face and the best cheesecake I've ever had. I can't wait to go back! Everyone in my party enjoyed their meals. They also have decent prices and selections of beer and wine. I'm still dreaming about that tangy, soft cheesecake..

  • Marilyn P.

Place is cheap and delicious!! I have never had a bad meal! It's different than say Bottega or Amore but it is really good. Very casual and laid back. You can make reservations and you can take your own wine. They do charge to cork it but if you've got a really good bottle of wine then it's worth it. Just a caution to those watching their carbs, this is a pasta and pizza place. There really aren't any options for carb watchers.

    (5)
  • Brad H.

This is a hidden gem--I have not had a bad meal yet here, much the opposite--everything I've tried has been top notch. The meatball sub, the Italian Stallion, and one of the best cheesesteaks in town. Haven't even gotten around to pizza and calzones yet, but from other reviews it looks like everything here is legit. Did I mention the prices are incredible as well? 12-inch sandwiches with a side and drink for lunch special prices of $7-8, keeping you under $10 total after tax.

    (5)
  • Lucy T.

The atmosphere is great for lunch, but not that nice of a place for dinner. The pizza and calzones are absolutely amazing! Anything with cheese usually is though haha, but their cheese bread could have used more cheese on it. The sandwiches were kind of plain, so i would definitely recommend the pizza or calzone.

Giuseppe's has been our go-to for a number of years. The food is delicious, reasonably priced, and the staff is always friendly. Try the tiramisu!

We looked up reviews & menus. Saturday we arrive before 6pm told it would be a half hour wait. No problem, at 7pm we ordered ToGo. $50+ later we received a large pizza good flavor, a calzone good, 2 side salads and chicken pursuttio that was chicken broth with some powered garlic and milk. It did not stick to the pasta or even take like Alfredo. Now I am sick to my stomach. Stick to the pizza.

Let me start off by saying service is always great. I really have only one thing negative thing to say and that is I wish they served more than just beer and wine. Now, the food....i wish i could describe it to you.... I usually get manacotti.....huge portions and it taste so fresh. I can imagine an old itallian grandmother preparing sunday lunch putting all of her love into the food. This food is delicious... any of the dishes you will not be disappointed. The prices are cheap, the portions are big and the food is... divine!

This an ok place. Ordered the cheese bread, chicken Alfredo and baked ziti. Cheese bread was OK, the cheese they use is somewhat bland. Actually put a little salt on it and it tasted pretty good. Chicken parm was also bland. Guessing they used the same cheese. I asked for some butter for the bread that comes with the meal and we watched as a big bottle was taken out of the fridge and a yellow liquid was poured into a plastic cup. To be fair she told me that it wasn't real butter but it was terrible. Baked ziti was decent. A little garlic here and there would help a lot. Place was packed so I guess others like it.

Upon arriving in the magic city we decided Giuseppe's was a must. Ordered the large all meat, cheese bread, and a side of parmesan cheese. My 92 year old mother who has never eaten here proclaimed it won't be as good as Godfathers. She wolfed down 3 pcs of cheese bread with marinara sauce. After eating 2 slices of the all meat pizza she proclaimed it was her best pizza and cheese bread. She wants to go back and try the pasta dishes. We all had a great meal and look forward to a return visit.

Prepare to be in a carb coma. Their food is scrumptious, and the portion sizes generous. The staff if friendly and seem to genuinely care about their customers. They have lunch specials daily. I've had the cheese bread, baked feta, lasagna, pizza, and vegetable pasta and would highly recommend them all (just maybe not all in one trip). Oh and for dessert the cheesecake and tiramisu are good enough to save room for. It is a very small establishment, but they do take reservations (yay!). Disregard the crazy looking strip mall where it's located, and you'll be glad you decided to try it.

This place is another awesome Bham "hidden gem." UAB students get 10% off! Thank you very much! My two highest recommendations are the calzones and the tiramisu. I am so happy with the guiseppe's special calzone that I get it over and over. The lunch prices are right where they should be and I love the lunch manicotti. I recently branched out and tried the chicken marsala. It was not my favorite marsala sauce as I have a specific taste Im looking for in marsala dishes but it was a pretty good dish and I might get it again if I can tear myself away from the calzone. People gush over the bread and the freshly grated parmesan cheese...as they should. I agree with Erin's comment of "carb coma!"

Very casual restaurant. My fiancee and I went around lunch on a weekday and were the only people in the place. I had the Chicken and Prosciutto Penne and my fiancée had the Baked Ziti w/ marinara sauce. My dish was fantastic, the Alfredo sauce had a very good taste. Her dish however was just average. The marinara sauce lacked a lot of flavor. Our visit wasn't expensive and was just the type of lunch we were looking for. We will definitely return.

Small place with really nice employees who seemed to enjoy being there. Evi Rachel was very friendly and attentive. The customers all looked like regulars and were very content. I was disappointed with the Chicken Cacciatore and my husband was disappointed with his Spaghetti and Italian sausage. The pasta was overcooked, and the dishes were just okay. The grey Italian sausage was a little unappetizing looking, but my husband said it tasted okay. Our food seemed pre made without bold flavor and reheated in the microwave. To me, the uneven distribution of heat confirms the use of the microwave. The home made garlic bread was really good, the Tiramisu was excellent, though a little soggy on the bottom. The place had a wonderful Italian aroma.......pizza! The pizza looked authentic and smelled wonderful, I would try that if I returned. I realize everything is perspective, my Italian food is pretty good, but not nearly as much fun :-)

This place is fantastic!! I had the Shrimp Alfredo which was divine. The sauce was not too thick but was just the right amount of butteriness. The shrimp were very well cooked, not overdone at all and very juicy. The garlic bread was a little over cooked. My date enjoyed the Chicken Marsala, which was also very delicious. Very well made and good prices! We had the tiramisu for dessert which was AMAZING. Best tiramisu I've tried in Birmingham. Don't change a thing! And pay your cook more!!!

Okay so I have to admit when my fiancee said she knew a good authentic Italian place, I was skeptical to say the least. Being Sicilian and growing up with a Mom who scratch made everything, I knew it probably wouldn't be up to par until i tasted it. I had to put the fork down cause I felt transported to my Mom's kitchen. Yes, it was that good. I hate even putting that out on Yelp cause I think of Giuseppe's as my little hole in wall Italian place. I love it all. The sauce or as Mom would say gravy is incredible. The pizzas, calzones, homemade dressings, lasagna, and so on...i love'em all. We go frequently. The staff is great. Rachel makes sure you are taken care of...oh and get the Chianti~Cemura. Enjoy...you'll thank me later.

Giuseppe's is a quaint little hole in the wall of an Italian restaurant, but the food is fantastic. Went here with another couple for dinner. I got a pasta dish with chicken and a white wine cream sauce with a Peroni beer. My dinner companions got pizza, a meatball sub, and the biggest calzone I've ever seen. Everyone was extremely happy with their meals. However, it was the dessert that I keep dreaming about. The cheesecake and tiramisu alone are worth the visit! I love that it's a small, intimate restaurant, and at less than 40 dollars for the two of us to both have drinks, dinner, and dessert, it's an affordable date night. I'm already trying to plan my next visit!

First time I visit was because I had a buy one get one coupon in my Enjoy the City book. My daughter and I were starving when I pick her up after classes at UAB. She had heard that they had good food so we decided to give it a try. We have been several times since then their Philly cheesesteak, chicken Philly , lasagna and pizzas are very good. The place is extremely small and has very little parking but if you can find a space make sure you stop by.

  • Ee Vonn Y.

The reviews don't lie. The restaurant is located in a shady looking plaza with questionable individuals lingering around as you pull your car up into the parking lot. I was nearly convinced someone was going to smash my car window. Fortunately, the restaurant interior wasn't reflective of that. The service was courteous, polite, and cheery. The Chef's special had a layer of meat and toppings that delightfully tumbles over into your plate. The vegetable combination I customized was delicious. It tasted extra cheesy and and the marina sauce flavor lingers pleasantly. The marinara sauce sides were warm enough to dip your soft pizza crusts. Refrigerator Test: Still tastes great. Stick in the microwave for 30 seconds to return the cold pizza to its original taste. The resemblance is almost frightful.

  • Adam S.

There is nothing wrong with the food here, but it is nothing overly amazing either. We got a 16" pepperoni and black olive pizza and some cheese bread. The pizza reminded me a lot of Godfathers Pizza. It tasted similar and had a similar crust. The cheese bread was adequate. The prices were good. Not like Miami where a pizza and cheese bread cost you $40. Definitely serviceable pizza, but not something I would go out of my way to eat.

  • Roger W.

My wife and I had lunch here for the first time. We heard that this place had a very good meatball sub and I am a sucker for a good meatball. The meatballs were good but the sub roll was great. Fresh baked yeast roll sitting under the meatballs and cheese made my day. We ordered the lunch special which consisted of a 12 inch sub , pasta salad and a drink and both of us ate for around $8.

By far the best Italin food resturant I have ever been to considering the price and QUALITY. I just tried the lasagna and it was amazing. I would definetly recommend this resturant if you have never been!

  • Lori T.

My fiance and I love this joint. It is small and tucked away without flashiness, but that's what makes it cool. You don't need flash when you serve good food. Since the fiance is a full-blooded Sicilian who's Mom made everything fresh, most Italian eateries don't have a chance. Our first night there, he took a bite of the lasagna and said, "this is like my Mom's." We were sold. I suggest the lasagna..it is divine. Also, we enjoy the pizza. My man says it tastes like the places he ate at when growing up in upstate New York. The sauce is delicious. Meatballs are on point. Wait staff couldn't be better. If you haven't had a salad there you are seriously missing out. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation. Also, get the Boxhead wine. Delish!!

  • Riva B.

I love this place. It is good old fashioned Italian food. Like your grandma made. well not mine since my grandmother wasn't Italian but if she was this would be as good as all her other food. their cheese pizza is delicious. their spaghetti is awesome. The lasagna looks good but i haven't tried that yet since I love their spaghetti. Definitely worth any wait. Staff is friendly and efficient. I think this is on my top 3 places in Birmingham to eat.

They now have more calzone options. All of their specialty pizzas are now available as calzones. I had the ham and pineapple and it was delicious. Also, I finally tried something besides a calzone. Baked Ziti with meat sauce. And it. was. so . good! My husband ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce but liked my baked ziti much better. It's super cheesy! The reason it's on my Top 100 Dishes to Try list: calzone baked ziti List: The BEST calzone and baked ziti I've ever had.

Impeccable service every time I go. Truly one of Bhams best kept secrets, meatballs are homemade with a nice Italian beer selection. If I ever need a place for a casual date for reasonable cost, I go here.

  • Michael N.

One of the best kept secrets in the Birmingham/Homewood area. It looks really inconspicious from the road so it's easy to pass it by but I implore you to stop and check this place out. Some of the best pizza, calzones, pasta dishes, and sandwiches in town. I love their maranara sauce and their meatball sub is the best in town.

    (5)
  • Bill T.

The best Caesar salad in town. Good pastas, excellent sandwiches. I don't think of it as a pizza place and somehow, over years of eating here, I've never gotten a pizza, probably because I was looking for good inexpensive Italian. I've tried the tables outside and like them, as the only flaw to this joint is it sometimes seems a little too enclosed inside.

  • Diego G.

I Love This Place! I came here daily when I used to work around the block and loved every single meal I've chosen! From the Meatball sub to the Lasagna!

  • Massimo F.

I would rate this place a 4.5. Pizza is not a super-great-one, but the overall post-postprandial satisfaction it is. Went back 2 two times more... ...and I'm happy to say that our PIZZA was VERY ENJOYABLE! I'll keep on stating that their crust isn't a pizza crust, but whatever would be its proper definition the final result is a light, easy to digest, very good tasting pizza. DRINKS are FEW, but for my happiness the serve some LIMITED PRODUCTION ITALIAN BEERS that I love! If you guys find the please find the "Peroni Doppio Malto" (not to be confused with the Moretti Rossa)... I promise 3 visits a month! The 0.5 star is lost for the decor. The place looks mmhee... not so pretty . SERVICE is seriously GREAT; kind, polite, fast, and smiling. That's an add-on that makes your dinner smooth and relaxed. I don't often talk about PRICE in the review, but I need to say that the prices here are VERY REASONABLE for the quality you get. Good job Giuseppe!

  • Raye F.

I initially read/heard rants and raves about this place. On a rainy Friday night, I got my husband to agree for our pizza date, but after dinning wasn't really impressed. The parking is tight, the joint is very small and packed out! They must be doing something right, but not with the calzones. It was very doughy and unless you're a meat-eater, this is probably not the ideal thing on the menu for you to order. We're not in any rush to give it another try but, I wouldn't be completely be against it for something else on the menu. The waitresses hustle to make sure customers are served and that was a plus; however, on the downside, since the place is small...the bathrooms are right in diners faces. I mean, I could tell if someone didn't wash their hands after a flush- no good. That being said I've found happier eats around town.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
