Dram Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Dram isn't the best food in Birmingham, but the atmosphere makes it worth the visit. The food is OK, and a little overpriced. They have a great variety of mixed drinks and cocktails, including the infamous Bacon Infused Whiskey. It is what it sounds like, servced complete with a stick of bacon. The bacon infused whiskey drink is worth trying once (for me, just to say I did it). I have sampled the John Daly (an alcholic version of the Arnold Palmer drink) and it was very good.

Heard about this place from someone I had met on a flight from BHM a couple weeks ago and decided to try it out. A little hard to find as it is around the corner from where the address indicated it should be and the signage is not very prominent. Look for the "Avo" sign which is their other restaurant upstairs from Dram. My persistence paid off with an incredible burger just as my new friend promised. I had the Gatlinburger. How could I resist a burger topped with smoked sausage and a fried egg. A bit pricy at $14, but worth it. I chose the panko onion rings as my aside and they were okay but paled in comparison to the burger. They were cooked well but lacking in flavor. Atmosphere at this place was great with inside seating around the old world bar and comfortable outside seating out front as well as on multilevel decks out back. My business associate and I choose the back deck area and that was a good choice as it was quieter and more conducive to conversation. Fortunately the weather was fair. I was concerned the wait staff would ignore us back there but those concerns were not realized as multiple servers waited this area. Our server did a good job and others checked in on us as well. Not once did we have to try to get someone's attention, nor were we bothered we excessive attention. Very professional staff here. I knocked my rating down one star because of the whiskey list. Advertised as the most extensive in town, it was impressive, but they didn't have either of my two favorites, Forty Creek or Crown Royal Reserve, not obscure whiskeys by any account. Tried the Makers Mark 46 and it was good, but Forty Creek would have put this place over the top for me.

For the summertime, they have a beautiful seating area outback. Perfectly lit, and makes you feel as if you're in a different place. I've only been once, but didn't realize how much I missed this atmosphere. Quaint and lofty. The Highlander was the drink that I got. It was amazing. Very refreshing with a hint of cucumber. I tasted the dram sour of one of my friends, and it was awesome! Another friend ordered an extra dirty martini, which was spectacular as well. Not a bad drink there. Be careful when ordering whiskey, they make it stout. We all shared a appetizer of fries with the rosemary ketchup, and those were unbelievable. I got the salmon and spinach salad. Other than the salad given out at FIVE, in lake view, this was the best. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Overall, I give this place 4 stars. The reason for the missing star is that the service was really bad, and the restaurant at the time, was not very busy. But I will go back!

I've been so torn with this place. The regular crowd is definitely kind of obnoxious but the food and whiskey selection are really solid. The service has been decent and also horrendous or even completely nonexistent. My wife and I had a fairly good experience a few weeks ago on a Sunday and the server mentioned 1/2 price bottles of wine. We didn't take advantage that night but it was part of the reason we decided to go give it another shot this past Sunday. We were seated at a table outside with menus. No silverware, no water and after almost 15 minutes, no server. What a joke. There was a server in the area, she made 3 trips to the table behind and no one so much as acknowledged our existence. We actually got up and left! I have over 15 yes experience in the restaurant industry at ever position so I understand busy nights and accidents happen but I'm done wasting my time with this place. There are plenty of other places in town with a good burger and good bourbon, I feel no need to give this place any more of my money. Huge waste of time. If this is the direction the place is going I don't see them being in business long term. It may be a hot place now but at the end of the day as Bham's restaurant scene grows, the competition will put this place under. Best of luck.

Avo and Dram Whiskey Bar are located in the same building on the corner of the main intersection in Mountain Brook Village. You can sit downstairs or upstairs or outside and order from either menu. The menu is unique and very tasty. I recommend the kale salad, fried okra, chips and guacamole. They serve the best hamburger in town. Don't forget the fried onions. Sunday they offer half price bottles of wine. This is a great deal. Besides great food Dram offers outstanding service. The staff there is friendly and professional. Brett, Phyllis and Liz do an incredible job at Dram. Great bar scene, kinda like Cheers.

Had dinner at Avo/Dram tonight. It was delicious. We had to eat upstairs at Avo b/c it was full downstairs at Dram. We ate off the Dram menu. I had the Hot Brown - one of the best I've ever had. My husband had the Gatlinburger and Parmesan Truffle Fries. It was a little over cooked, but delicious. They have an extensive whiskey/bourbon menu. The wine list is limited but sufficient. Can't wait for it to warm up so we can eat on the patio.

Got run out of the house so I met up with my friends at Dram while the wives had some kind of function. Sat outside on the deck and I was fortunate to find two of my favorite food items combined in one dish: a pimento cheese on a burger with mustard and fantastic pickles. I ordered it medium-rare, and it felt a bit more like medium to me, but it was still delicious. The mashed sweet potato side made the whole meal complete, and my buddies and I left full and satisfied. Our waitress, Kendall, was awesome- I recommend her to anyone heading over to Dram. Cool thing is, no matter where you sit, you can order off either the Dram or the Avo menu, so the options are pretty big. When I am dragged out to brunch by my wife or daughter, I'm happy to end up at Dram because they serve real food: grits, biscuits, gravy, bacon- all my top picks for a weekend breakfast. I'll definitely be heading back over to Dram in the future.

Well, we found this place based on other Yelp reviews so we decided to give it a try. The downstairs was hopping but a little on the loud side so we decided to go upstairs and sit outside. It was very slow upstairs but considering we showed up at 945 on a Wed night that was expected. Not to worry though our Server Nick showed up and took great care of us! He made great recommendations, even saving me from attempting the Bacon infused Bourbon drink. (who knew that bacon wasn't that great with something?) I had the Gatlinburger (with Bacon instead of Sausage and some gouda for good measure) and my wife had the Bison burger. Both were cooked to Med rare perfection! For sides, I had the Gits (EXCELLENT!), and she had the fries (Acceptable) and while we were't offered any of the excellent sounding sauces, we really didn't need any! The drinks were good and though the Blackberry Winter was not to her liking they made a spot on Manhattan. Nick made awesome recommendations for every step of the meal and to top it all off the bourbon ice cream sandwich was not too shabby. I hope to make it back here again to sample the other Kentucky inspired delicacies and maybe see if they really know how to make a Hot Brown!

Food OK but over priced. Ordered the salmon but came out as a salad with a small piece of salmon on it. Again, overpriced. Very disappointed.

I honestly can't remember what I ate here, so I guess it wasn't that note worthy. Downtown Mountain Brook has always been lacking in restaurants due to the lack in parking spaces. However, this can be alleviated if one can offer a dining experience that merits the trouble. Dram...hmm, nice atmosphere/décor, but really caters to the uppity stereotypical MB trophy wives. All I noticed while there were a couple of suits having an afterwork pick-me-up and dolled-up first wives club women on the prowl for their next pool boy. This is essentially a MB place for MB people. Too bad really, it has the makings of a fine establishment, but fails in execution.

People who don't 100% enjoy the food must not have tried the pork chop on a bed of grit's w/a fried egg on top. Are you crazy? Also try the filet w/ some delicious okra on the side. I have been to Dram a handful of times and have always enjoyed my experience. While slightly pricey, it's better food and drink than I've had in some of the "finer" restaurants in B'ham. The MB uppity-ness doesn't bother me because my friends and I ignore it. I'm there for the great service and smooth drinks anyway. I give it a solid A.

I'm on the road quite a bit and enjoyed this place during a recent visit to Birmingham. Staff was super friendly and the food pretty good (much better than that Bottega place across town). The atmosphere is great if you're looking to hang out and have drinks -- not as noisy as a sports bar and nice enough to entertain a business client. I'll definitely go back again.

Overall a very "meh" experience. I had the burger with shoestring fries - burger was dry, fries were soggy with grease. Was seated outside and it started to rain, other tables were reseated by their servers, who didn't bother to recognize that my waiter was MIA and maybe I wanted to be reseated too...

Decided to have brunch here because Another Broken Egg was very busy. I wish i had been more patient. Our food was fine, but for cost--i would have preferred somewhere else. I had the eggs Benedict and david had the oyster egg dish. Both were ok---but for $12+ on each one, it could have at least had a side item... My father in law had the Egg salad sandwich. It was a sliced hard boiled egg on a sandwich. I don't think he was expecting it to come that way. Food took a long time to come out, too. Prob won't be back for brunch

My copilot and I stopped here for an early dinner and drinks after flying all day and through lunch. We were sitting at the bar and we must have gotten there at a good time because soon after this place was filling up with an after work crowd. Seemed like everyone in there was in business attire, men in suits and ties and women in pants-suits. The guys that come in here should consider leaving their ties in their cars because the scene started to look a little stuffy after a while. The food wasn't good. I had a bowl of their bison chili and some tempura haricots verts and we split a bottle of wine. The wine was excellent. My bison chili seemed to be missing the bison and any hint of flavor or spice. Perhaps their entrees are better. Who knows? I'd be willing to give them another shot next time I come to Birmingham.

Great food and excellent drinks every time, although I like to stick with the Frankfort Fizz. Only missing the 5th star due to inconsistent service, which really takes away from the experience at a place like this.

Maybe my favorite place in Birmingham. The food is always good and I love the atmosphere/decor. I really enjoy both the California burger off the Avo menu and the Gatlinburger from the Dram menu. Hot and juicy burgers with high quality ingredients every time! The scotch and bourbon selection is the best in the city.

Some friends and I came here just to try the bacon whiskey. I don't even like whiskey, but I just wanted to be able to say I tried it. Yeah so I had to hold down my puke response but whatev. Now I can join the bacon crowd. We are a really laid back group of folks, and I just wanted to throw my bacon whiskey drink in the faces of all the other people there. Ugh. But that is to be expected. I mean this is MB we are talkin about. So you will indeed be surrounded by little posh wannabes that think they own the world. Some stupid b pretty much made sure the door slammed in my face. I dunno, maybe it was because I was wearing my Choos instead of wearing my Manolos. My bad! I'll try to remember them next time! The only upside was that when we were joking around and asked for more bacon, the guy brought us a plate full.

I don't know what happened to the food but the place is now officially a bar. It's a cool place to hang out and if you must eat, I'd get the burgers. The last few times, even those have been ok. I really don't know what happened. They used to have a great menu and really good food but it's not the case anymore.

Food & Service are great. It can get cramped as Dram is on the bottom floor and a smaller space. Awesome outdoor patio. The burgers are delicious, as is the pimento cheese, and grilled cheese sandwich. Drinks are pricey. Overall excellent food and atmosphere!

It is almost 4AM & this will be my 1st Yelp review. Funny that I signed up for Yelp since I make fun of the BF constantly as he is addicted to this web community. After signing up, Dram is the 1st place I wanted to review bc it is the definition of awesome. I say this based on the drinks, not so much the food as I haven't tried many things on the menu. For the few items I have tried, I will say that their burgers are very well made---& I am not a burger-eating gal. I recently tried the Bison Burger ($12) with a side of grits. The burgers are comparable to those @ Flip Burger. The grits were DELICIOUS! Very fluffy & well seasoned. If you are just here for a drink & a snack, I highly recommend the fries. Yes, they are just fancy cut fries with skin still on them but what really makes it is the ketchup (I think it's rosemary/lavender/some herb-infused). Oh the ketchup. When you realized you've run out of fries it's a sad moment as now there is nothing to eat the rest of the ketchup with. It is that amazing. I read somewhere that Dram is a little piece of Kentucky that got dropped in Alabama. I've never been to Kentucky but am assuming they are big on whiskey, as Dram is a whiskey bar. I.LOVE.WHISKEY. Dram goes above & beyond the whiskey sour & jack+coke. The bar is stocked full of whiskey varieties. That being said they do make other spirit drinks, but why would you go to whiskey bar & order an appletini? The Blackberry Winter & Algonquin are just girly enough but packs a punch . For the cold weather right now they have a delicious Hot Tottie made with apple-cinnamon infused house whiskey. Prices range from $9-$12. They also have 1/2 price well & call drinks & beers (except high-gravity) on Tuesdays. Dram is a sister establishment to Jackson's Bar&Bistro in Soho, so they do some of the same specials. This review has run away with my delirious state of insomnia so I will just end it with the decor. There is a lot of wood & brick & comfy leather chairs. It's homey with two flat screen TVs @ the bars for singles. Their outdoor patio is very well set up, perfect for parties in the summer time. The service has always been very polite, nice, & helpful. Go here. Drink whiskey. It will make you merry--& warm. So very warm.

Tonight was my second visit to this restaurant. The Bison Burger was fantastic. The avocado and salsa dip was off and the lemon desert was not very good. The alcohol selection was excellent, especially if you're a bourbon fan. I would definitely eat here again.

Stopped here on another work trip. Sunday evening and the place is decently crowded. Avo and Dram share a space and menus. Menu was reasonably priced and service was excellent. Had the Dram burger which was cooked perfectly.

Wonderful layout with bar, regular, lounge, and outdoor patio seating. This has to be one of most lovely restaurants with a patio I've been to in a long while. Take advantage of it while you're here. It helps that this place doesn't seem to aim at a particular crowd. I saw groups of really young people in here, dinner parties, and older people all in different areas of the restaurant/bar that you shouldn't worry about feeling out of place here. The service was superb. The waiter did an excellent job in recommending a bourbon drink even though I don't prefer bourbon. Therefore, I can pass on this knowledge for non-Bourbon fans, give the blackberry winter drink a chance. It's sweet enough to make bourbon bearable and almost likable. The onion rings appetizer was good as long as you weren't expecting onion rings. I'm not sure what it was because it wasn't ring-shaped nor even onion. However, it was still delicious and will leave plenty of room for more. The hot brown entree stole show. I'm not sure what's in but it looked like a mess of bacon, cheese, and eggs on top of some slices of bread buried underneath.

I sat alone at the bar, so I spent most of my time observing. I must agree with a previous review that had both pros and cons; the place is very cute, it's a great 'after work' spot, the drinks are ok, but they DO have a disinterested wait staff. I waited a while before I was greeted at the door (the hostess was digging for something at her stand), then a very long time at the bar before being greeted (after 2 bartenders just stood there talking with each other). I even left and went to the restroom at one point and they were still talking to each other. Note: They weren't making drinks at this time, just having a conversation. I noticed a table across from me get neglected for the first 10 min of their visit. Finally, the bartender who took my order started fussing about how that table's server was nowhere to be found. He talked about bringing that table water but complained about how it 'wasn't his job/wasn't his table.' As a previous server myself, I've always felt like it's in the best interest of the restaurant for all servers to help each other. I do like the fact that you can order food from Avo even while sitting at Dram, the whiskey bar, but most of my experience involved listening to the servers and bartenders complain to each other about everything from dirty glasses to not being taught the menu changes. They also had an incident where the main bartender at Dram had to go upstairs and the 'makeshift' bartender didn't know what garnishes to put on the drinks. He kept asking other servers who also didn't know. On a lighter note, I had the lamb burger with feta cheese and mint jelly (very yummy) and the sour mash sweet potatoes (which left something to be desired). The drink I had was a blackberry winter (very sweet). When I got ready to leave I had to track down someone for a box, I was not acknowledged upon leaving (the hostesses were busy talking to each other), and I felt like I was more of a burden than a patron. All in all, the food was a good, but the experience was not. The staff needs more training from food, to drink ingredients, to common courtesy.

Dram is a fantastic location for a night out. Good place to begin or end the night. I met a girlfriend here to catch up. We sat at the bar and ordered cocktails. There are lounge chairs and tvs as well as a patio. This makes for a surprisingly good place for groups or a date. Having had dinner, and just cocktails on separate occasions I would say that the service is all around impressive.

One of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham, and probably one of my top 3 favorite burgers (and definitely my favorite buns). You can sit outside in the warmer months, or upstairs at Avo when Dram is full, and it can be pretty loud by the bar but the food is so worth it. Libby is my husband and my favorite server. Food & drinks are both top notch. Food-wise, high praise for the burgers, the matchstick fries, fried okra when it's in season, the pork belly poutine, the Memphis chicken sandwich, and the hot brown. I've tried and loved a lot more. I love that you can order from both Dram and Avo's menu and the burger prices are especially reasonable. Love it!

All I can comment on is the delicious house house drink made with blackberries and knob creek. The ambiance is earthy and candlelit. The patio is fantastic. Had great service in a quaint little bar tucked away in the tiny kingdom.

It's an interesting setup, with Dram partnered with the upstairs restaurant Avo. Two completely different menus and atmospheres. How I found this out was that when I arrived, Dram was so crowded I couldn't get a table, so they invited me to have a drink (on them) upstairs and review the menus until space opened up. Dram's menu is Southern-inspired, as opposed to Avo's California seafood focus. I had the pimento cheese & crackers with my cocktail, and it was good, but unremarkable. For dinner I had the fish & chips, which was not in the least greasy. I asked the waitress before I ordered it, and she assured me I'd be pleased, and I was. I'm a single malt drinker, and their selection was solid in that respect. If this place has a downside, it's the noise level. Too many hard surfaces makes this a tough place to enjoy a conversation. As the night went on, it got busier and noisier. It was an entertaining place for people-watching. I got a chuckle seeing the crowd trying to look sophisticated wearing what was fashionable in Manhattan 5 years ago. (I'm an ex-New Yorker, so I can say this.) A word of advice to these poseurs, though. You don't look sophisticated drinking the beer right out of the bottle, or sipping a cocktail with a slice of bacon sticking out of it. (Yes, that's the house drink - bacon infused bourbon.) In fact, half the menu had bacon involved in some fashion. I know it's a Southern thing, but the bacon fad is over.

Fabulous from head to toe! Decor, wait staff and food. It always floors me when I ask a server what they recommend and they can't give me an answer. Our server was so great at recommendations from the wine to the dessert. I will visit Dram again next time I am in Birmingham.

After wandering around Crestline last night my SO and I decided on Dram/Avo for dinner. For a Wednesday night it was rather busy, we were seated upstairs. The two restaurants are totally different, but both fantastic. We ended up ordering off the Dram menu. I had the Blackberry Winter and it was one of the best drinks I've ever had, and I am not a fan of sweet drinks usually. I ordered the lamb burger (mr) with fries and he ordered the bison burger (m) with greens. I wasn't terribly impressed with the greens, but that is more of a personal preference. The burgers were cooked perfectly and the rosemary ketchup was to die for. My second drink was Sassafrass Sazerac which was completely different and equally good. Service was good, we sat at a bar table at Avo and the bartender was attentive even though he was rather busy. The manager came over and greeted us, asked about our food and helped me decide on my second drink. Overall, fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back!!

Dram is really great for night time atmosphere, Whisky, & snacks. However when it comes to Brunch, they have a lot to work on. The mimosa's are way over priced especially since they are made with Sparkling Wine, which will always give you a headache. Opt for 1/2 off wines & get a good bottle of Champ age. Be careful though, the Veuve Clicquot is a split (half size) bottle. The Brunch menu is a complete joke. The grits were decent but that was about it. The biscuits looked like dolls food, the sliders were finger tip size, the eggs were sloppy & undercooked. Our bill came to over $40 for lackluster Barbie food.

I have been going to Dram ever since they opened last year. Yeah there are some pretentious patrons but if your concentrating on them instead of your delicious drink then you shouldn't come here anyway. I don't live in Birmingham but my fiance is in school there so I go one a month. The staff is some of the best in Birmingham why?...because all the management is from outside of Birmingham. Food...uhh where else in Birmingham can you get a bacon crab stuffed deviled egg and a bone in buffalo steak?...Nuf said. Drinks...the best old fashioned in town. Wine?...ok so I'm not usually drinking wine from a whiskey bar but the list is impressive with some hard to find wines (and I'm in San Francisco). To sum it up there really isn't a place in Birmingham like Dram and that suits me just fine. PS: Sunday is 1/2 price bottles of wine!

  • Mike S.

Solid whiskey bar. Some of the appetizers need work but overall, there's nothing really to complain about. The truffled fries with rosemary ketchup are a must. The onion rings and chicken and waffles arent; I'm not sure why they decided fried chicken beast would be smarter than a quarter but... Whatever. One bourbon, one scotch, one beer. Or was it two of e everything? It wasn't all that crowded for a a Saturday night in SEC football land, so to me... that's a plus. I'll be back.

They have a 1/2 price wine night. Everything was well prepared and timely. We ate a ton of oysters and had a grand time. The staff is friendly and a few of them quite funny. They have a great bourbon selection. No pappy when I was there but they do have other interesting bottles.

Been one of my favorite places to go and relax since I moved back 5 years ago. The service has always been exceptional. Aging myself but it feels like "Cheers"...everybody knows your name. I need to branch out food wise because I always have the Bison Burger. I go in every time with the intention of trying something new yet I always go back to this. It is fantastic! Side of truffle fries with Rosemary ketchup and I'm in heaven. Only downside is, it doesn't have many beers on draft. Not really an issue here because the drinks and bartenders are great. I'm a big Old Fashion fan and they may make the best in the city. Highly recommend the margarita too. Both are exceptional. Dram has a great full service outside patio area as well which really helps because Dram does tend to get crowded. It's a great spot and location so naturally it would. I have never had one service issue there even when it's at capacity. I highly recommend Dram for everything from a business meeting to an evening catching up with friends.

I get other folks complaints about this place getting too crowded, but I wasn't privy to that. There were lots of folks there, but we were immediately seated on the patio. The waiter was really nice and not too uptight. He checked on us regularly and overall, did a fantastic job. But, five stars? Yeah, and here's why. We had four people in our party. We had four different entrees, four different drinks, and two apps. Not being afraid of germs, I tried a little bit of everything. It was all so good. For apps, we got the Avo dip and Okra fries. Fantastic. Entrees included burgers, salads, fries, mashed sweet potatoes, and more. It was all ridiculously good. If you can catch this place when you can find a seat, sit down. The food is amazing.

Drinks were delish and their bourbon list was amazing! A nice laid back place to grab drinks after work or after dinner. I had the Yin-Yang martini and it was soooo good! The muddled strawberries made the drink! It was like tasting fresh strawberries right out of the carton! Definitely one of the sweet drinks on the menu. My husband said it was delicious but too fruity for him lol definitely a girlie drink. I also had the Blackberry Winter. It was really tasty but kinda strong. The bartenders were super nice and offered advice when asked. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because we didn't sample the food menu but it looked good from what the people around us were eating.

Great whiskey selection! My wife and I had dinner here one night and set up stairs. We each had a filet with different sides. The steak was decent and the sides were good. I tried several different bourbons and whiskeys that I have not tried before. It was nice to have the variety available.

I love this place and should really start going more often. They have a great drinks and food. I actually recommend their margarita's because they make a great one! My favorite item on the menu is actually an appetizer! I just can't get over the ham sliders. How can something so simple taste so amazing? They come with apple sauce to dip it in which is unique but taste great. I would give 5 stars but my one complaint is I feel like every time we go they are out of the Game of the Day. I would expect that if you were having a late dinner around 8 or so but when have been there early and they were already out. Great date night location or place to go with a small group of friends (no more then 6 though or it may be difficult to get a table)

Two words, people: Hot. Brown. Maybe we missed the elusive "brookie" crowd that's often discussed when Dram comes up, but I enjoyed the environment of this place. Dram is considered a whiskey bar and coincidentally, whiskey is my favorite liquor so I was in drink heaven. The old-fashioned and the Blackberry Winter mixed drinks were perfect, and I contemplated stealing my husband's Toronto (but didn't). I couldn't decide on what to order as my entree and our server basically insisted I get the hot brown. Thank you, wise waitress, for the amazing recommendation. The hot brown consists of layers of toast, thick slices of roasted turkey, an amazing cream sauce, and thick-cut bacon. I know it sounds weird, but this dish was amazing. My husband got the bluegrass burgers and I thought the Henry Bain's sauce really made an otherwise normal burger stand out. Our waitress convinced my husband to order the truffle fries from the Avo menu as his side and we were very pleased with this decision. The huge plate of fries were demolished and let me tell you, that is no small feat. We don't get over to this area of Birmingham very often, but maybe we'll have to make a point to every once in awhile for the hot brown.

Faith renewed...somewhat. It's been a year since my last visit and review of Dram. Bar service was better, although obvious there is one bartender that works and two others that tag along pretending, but ok. Truffle fries still soggy, maybe time to move on from this dish (everyone's doing them now anyway). My fish taco was outstanding, yes outstanding. $9 worth of deliciousness that will be remembered. Love the atmosphere of this place; skip the fries, have a drink and eat fish tacos. Done.

Great spot for an evening out. First off, Dram is located under Avo, and you can chose from both menus which adds a fun uniqueness to the experience. The inside was packed, due to the fact that it's a whiskey bar that also doubles as a restaurant. We chose to sit on the patio and only had to wait 5 minutes on a Friday night, a plus for me. I didn't order a drink, so my rating doesn't include that aspect. However, based on the activity inside, it's a popular place to frequent for a drink. I was very pleased with the location, atmosphere, and service. Our waiter was polite and attentive, though busy. As for the food, it was modestly priced and 4 star worthy-not one of Birmingham's top 10 but definitely worth frequenting. The Bison Burger was tasty, delicious beef, lean and not a wild flavor. But I'd say the Truffle Fries with Rosemary Ketchup from Avo's menu was the standout of our meal. Amazing flavor!

Sunday Brunch- As a treat, my boyfriend and I went for brunch after church. The atmosphere in Dram is quite warm and lovely. I would say I enjoyed everything just fine, the smoked bacon bourbon was quite delightful. My boyfriend had a burger, and I ordered from the brunch menu. At $11, my breakfast (eggs, bacon, two tiny biscuits and grits) was "OK".. Now, on the menu I saw "gravy" listed next to the ham, so I thought nothing of it when my waiter asked if I wanted gravy to go with my biscuits, and I said "yes". When the already high check arrived, I noticed an additional $3 was charged for a very small ramekin portion of gravy. So my brunch of 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, a normal portion of grits and two half-dollar sized biscuits with a small ramekin of gravy ended up costing $14. This was WAYYYYY too much for the quality and quantity of food I ordered. My boyfriend's burger, however, was amazing and full of flavor (thankfully he gave me two bites, because it was quite delicious).. At $14, for a really good burger, not completely outrageous. So all in all, after we left, he said "looks as though your experience was ruined by the $3 gravy". He was correct, my experience was ruined by the $3 gravy. The $12 glass of bacon infused bourbon was worthy.. Gravy was not..

You want whiskey??? They have it! I enjoy some good bourbon from time to time and they have the best selection in town. This place has a fantastic atmosphere downstairs called DRAM - all wood work made of old bourbon barrels, supposedly. The upstairs is called AVO - a bit more modern/contemporary style - which doesn't matter because you can get the same stuff in both places. A great place to drink after work or even for session boozing. You gotta try the whiskey cocktails and all of their crazy creations. If you get hungry the food is also great! Their burgers are the shit!!!!!!!

If you like whisky, Dram's is the place to go. Not too pricy, but upscale enough to foster an awesome crowd and great ambiance. The bison burger and bison chili were divine! Highly recommended. Service was great at both the restaurant and the bar. Was only visiting Birmingham, but if I return, I will definitely go back. Excellent.

Dram is my personal go-to for dinner. I know there are haters out there who dislike the mainly "Brookie" crowd that frequents the bar, but hey, it makes for great people watching if nothing else. Essentially, the food is on-point, the wine list stellar, the cocktails unique and the service impeccable. (Ask for Kendall as your waitress- she's the best so tip her well!) The decor is cozy and the outdoor patio is decked, with the lower section featuring couches and a table for a casual drink or two. My usual order includes the pimiento cheese burger (no bun) and the fries... oh those french fries. As a self-professed french fry expert/addict, I can tell you that these are divine. They often are made with duck fat or some truffle oil, so you foodies out there know how those tastes envelop your mouth and make you a little woozy (ok I need to take a break now....)... Ask for the rosemary ketchup- it is made in-house. Actually all of their sauces are good, so if you have a nice waiter you can ask for all of them so you can sample and see which you prefer. Brunch at Dram is another treat I indulge in every once in a while. Well-made bloody mary's complement the omelets, sausage, and bacon... and the pancakes (so I'm told). If you aren't in the mood for whiskey-bar southern fare, you can also always order off of the Avo menu (the restaurant upstairs that is muy modern and California style... if you do that I suggest the grilled cheese with tomato soup dipping sauce... oh lala). So, Dram = great food in a cool atmosphere. Then you can walk around the corner to the ice cream shop and get some Only 8 frozen yogurt to make up for the massive amount of fries or bourbon sweet potato mash you consumed. :)

I only had an opportunity to visit Dram twice, so I tasted very little of the menu. Limiting my experience even more, I enjoyed a superb burger there so much first visit that I ordered a different burger the second time. All I know there, then, is Dram's burgers and fries! But this is the best burger and bun I've had since the Blind Rabbit in Jacksonville FL. The burger is high-quality Angus beef, perfectly cooked and seasoned, and bursting with flavor (so many expensive burgers do not!). The ultra-thin shoestring fries also may be the best fries I've had in a long time. I sat at the large, comfortable bar to enjoy my meals and some excellent craft beer. Many diners clearly enjoyed the nice patio in the rear. If the rest of the menu is as tasty as the superb burgers would lead one to believe, this place must be a winner.

The atmosphere was super classy and trendy, drinks were good. I got the lamb burger and it was huge and delicious, the French fries were plentiful. All my friends ordered burgers and were all satisfied. The mashed sweat potatoes were to die for! Will definitely be back

I agree the with MB that the atmosphere is worth the visit. But I disagree that the food is just OK. Same Chef as the upstairs Avo and the food is just as good! The menu at Dram is very reasonablly priced. Great burgers and other items from the grill! I really enjoyed the "Breakfast for Dinner": a grilled Duroc pork chop served with grits and topped with a fried egg. They also have this sauce called Henry Baines, or something like that, which reminds me of a steak sauce and BBQ sauce married together. Get that sauce on your burger or steak, or even on the grits. The bar is lively and a great place to hang out after work, mid evening, or late night.

I'd been here before for drinks, but dined here for the first time last week. Sat outside, on the front patio in the shade. We tried a couple appetizers, the Nashville Hot Chicken (great flavor but tiny portion for the price) and the pimento cheese and crackers (recommend this app--good quantity and great flavor--so good one of the guys ordered the pimento cheeseburger!). For our entrees, 3 of the 4 in our party ordered burgers, which were all large and tasted great. The Henry Bain sauce that came on the side with my Bluegrass Burger was awesome, hard to describe it--a bit of a worcestershire taste, but a little fruity as well. Paired very well with my burger. The matchstick fries looked good, but my Maker's Mark bourbon mashed sweet potatoes were awesome. Two of my favorite things, bourbon and potatoes. WIN. I wish Dram was open for lunch, would hit it up more often.

The food here is really good and the drinks are on point. I have been here a few times and urge you to look no further than the great burger selection or my favorite, the Memphis chicken sandwich. When it comes to libations, if whiskey is your thing, you're in the right place. The whiskey menu is uniquely divided up by state and county, so you have a ton of choices and can even brush up on you "fancy whiskey talking points" which, in my circles, makes you cooler than knowing a Napa wine from a Sonoma wine. The ONLY drawbacks are limited parking and the tuxedo-clad self importance seminar taking place at the table next to me. I feel confident that they were the exception to the usual crowd, but I will sit on the patio if I see them there next time. Ok, I'm (kind of) kidding. All in all this is a good place for a reasonably priced meal that feels fancy-ish with a well crafted cocktail.

Great atmosphere! Stopped while driving back to ga. The kale Caesar salad was phenomenal, the tomato salad was good ( but I swear the cheese was not feta- taste like goat or something more strong- I pushed to side) my husband enjoyed the fish taco so much I didn't even get a bite. We got there in time for 1/2 beers - large selection and specialty drink list looked good. Definitely may stop here again.

I have to say that these other people complaining about the Mountain Brook crowd are judging based on appearance and not necessarily the quality of food or the atmosphere. Given it is in the middle of Mountain Brook, it still has fabulous food (try the okra or the amazing pimento cheese spread). I go there for the experience of good food and a way to take a load off after a long work day. So put aside the complaints from the people who talk about who goes there, the wait staff is fabulous and so is the food. Isn't that what this is about?

The only thing I didn't enjoy about my first time here was how busy it was. Remove the 50 other people crammed by the bar, and this place would have been five out of five stars. Every drink my girlfriend and I tried was perfect, and the food was unbelievable. The lamb burger with mint jelly was incredibly good and well worth the wait.

Never had bad service or food at this place! Me and the ladies frequent this spot for happy hour and dinner, normally during the warmer months to enjoy that deck. But we couldn't stay away from that pimento cheese and toasted pecans! Ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner which was exactly what I needed on this frigid day! Try the Yin yang martini, girly strawberry flavored drink!

I am torn between leaving a 3 and a 4. My husband and I have been to Dram (downstairs) about 3 times. Each time we went we sat at a small table by the front window. We were constantly bumped by servers and patrons standing/walking around the bar. So, our seating contributed to a poor experience. In addition to crowding, the environment was boisterous (kind of the loud drunk and slightly annoying variety). This made talking to my husband difficult because we essentially had to scream across the table to one another. Third, the drink delivery was slow. I remember our food coming out before our drinks! However, each time I ordered a burger and they cooked it perfectly. Finally, the service the last time was just "meh." We saw all the servers (except ours) about a hundred times--rushing orders, busing tables etc. Our server checked in with us 3 times: once to get our order, second to bring drinks, third to deliver the check. In summary, I would say if you plan to meet friends for drinks, that might be more appropriate. If you plan to go out for dinner, go upstairs to Avo. However, I probably wouldn't grab drinks at Dram because it just takes too long to get them!!!

Love it!

Ordered the shrimp cocktail. $14 for 4 shrimp that came out on a bread plate. TOTAL RIPOFF.

  • Jennifer M.
