We have yet to find something to complain about the food is the best!!!! I love the citrus and the traditional menu!!! My husband loves the fish!!! If you want to try good food in Birmingham go here!!! It won't disappoint!!!!

Not bad at all. Stay within the first page of the menu and get an authentic dish. You will not be disappointed. Outside of that the rest of the menu is going to be your typical asain American food. The servers are very nice and stay on top of everything.

This family-run gem has been open since 2013. The restaurant is quaint, and has a triangular shaped dining room with approximately 12 tables. The decor is modern and clean. The menu includes the typical Americanized dishes, and also offers an authentic Chinese section. There is a wide variety of choices, and the menu is well organized. Lunch is served with your choice of soup and egg roll. I had the Hot and Sour soup and it was very good. Ingredients were fresh, and I especially noticed the mushrooms and firm tofu. The soup had a great flavor, and was very peppery. We ordered Sautéed String Beans, Orange Chicken, Guang Dong Style Braised Pork, Boiled Fish in Hot Oil, and Shrimp Fried Rice. Everything was quite good, and the highlights that I would recommend were the green beans and the braised pork dishes. The green beans were fresh and sautéed with ground pork. The beans were cooked to perfection: still firm and a little crunchy. The pork sauce was tasty. The Guang Dong Style Braised Pork is a Cantonese style dish. The thin slices of pork are braised with sliced carrots, onions, and cabbage. The seasoning uses a generous helping of Sichuan peppers, and the dish is very spicy.

Hands down, best ethnic Chinese in Bham. We've always been partial to the traditional eggplant dish. My husband and I usually make a few meals of the dish, we just cool some extra rice for leftovers. Mom ordered in and added the traditional eggplant garlic and spicy chicken dishes. WOW. Bham, if you want spicy chicken--this is the place to go. Little scrumptious spicy, fried chicken pieces. This wasn't a good thing to be introduced to while I'm on Weight Watchers. But you know what, at least I enjoyed it!!!!! I highly recommend visiting Black Pearl for their traditional Chinese cuisine. Now that I've tried a few more items, I realize I need to try the others.

I was craving some Chinese food with excellent service and that's exactly what my husband and I received here. Ordered the salt and pepper shrimp with shell on and it's amazing. Came with rice / fried rice and soup &egg roll. Service was great.

$3 delivery fee i understand but I don't understand the $3 telephone fee that was snuck in on my bill. It's not on my email invoice but was on the receipt they brought with the food. The odd thing is I used the app to order and not the phone.

If you want authentic Chinese food with a variety of other options of sushi, Korean food, and Thai because Chinese isn't just cutting it for the night, go to Black Pearl. In the waiting area, they have a Keurig machine to help yourself with some coffee and cookies on the table. I ordered the shrimp in lobster sauce to test the authenticity of the Chinese food (so I can't speak for the quality of the other Asian foods) and I was missing a bit of home. Even though I asked to not have fried rice included, they gave it to me anyway just like the Asian restaurant employees back home would. The shrimp in lobster sauce was everything like I would expect and they did not hold back. The shrimp was fresh, delicious, succulent, and plump. I probably had at least 12 pieces in mine, which made the total of $12.50 absolutely worth it.

Excellent food and excellent service!! I usually don't try Asian food when passing through an unfamiliar city, but this was truly a great experience. - Jacksonville, Florida

Excellent Chinese food in Birmingham. Staff is attentive and courteous very much different from New York style Chinese service. Food is fresh and tasty try it.

Ate at the Black Pearl today, really on a whim. I have to say the food was fantastic, and the service was absolutely first rate. I love, and I do mean love, food that is spicy and flavorful--the food here is all that and then some. I'm not one for favorite restaurants or anything like that, but this is my exception. I'll eat here regularly. The prices are great and the portions are fantastic. You've got to give this place a try if you're looking for flavor. One word, yummy!

I am pleasantly surprised with our take out meal. The Singapore Rice Noodles are excellent! Filled with beef, chicken, and shrimp and just the right amount of curry spice. The salt and pepper Chinese pork remained crispy and was well seasoned. Great portion sizes - my husband and I are stuffed and we have enough for lunch leftovers. Eat here - save money AND get excellent food! Much better than the big name chain at The Summit. Definitely adding Black Pearl to our take out rotation. I can't wait to try their other Asian fare. My one hope is that they add Filipino Cuisine so that they can be even more of a pan Asian restaurant.

My mother and I ate here unintentionally. We were looking for a burger joint, but apparently the lovely Yelpers of Yelp have decided not to help a girl out and update the address. So, with time wasted walking around, we just decided to try this place out. I am very glad we did, because for a fast food Asian joint, it was pretty good! We had egg rolls to start. They were not bad, but they were not really anything special. We also had hot and sour soup, which came with the meal. It was nice and tasty. No complaints. The real bonus was the entree. My mom had the beef lo mein, which was really delicious. Plenty of it for seconds, too. I had the honey crispy chicken, and it was mighty good. It came with fried rice, which was probably the best fried rice I have eaten from a not fancy restaurant. We spent maybe 20 bucks, and both of us had a leftover meal. So good food for a good price. The staff is friendly. You can watch tv while you eat. It is clean, and you don't have to bother going back up to the counter for a togo box. All you have to do is go to the counter with the drinks and napkins, etc. Definitely would return.

This is a great restaurant. One friend told me this place. I'm glad I followed his suggestions. The essence was the secret menu. If you asked at the front desk for special menu, they would hand you a list with about 20 dishes. I ordered belt fish and pork rib with salted soybean. I must say, as a Chinese who lived in Birmingham for 5 years, these were the best dishes I had tasted. After asking why the dishes were so authentic, the owner said the special menu was created under strong demands of Chinese students from Samford University, including a different Cantonese soup everyday. Compare to it's peers such as Red Pearl or Mr. Chen's, the environment is much better with higher hygienic rating. Furthermore, the food is plentiful. I will definitely come back to this place regularly in the future.

I CRAVE real Chinese food. I grew up in LA and went to college in San Francisco and i wake up some days smelling salt pepper squid in my nose! On one such day after relocating to Birmingham, I dared to research until I found a down home Chinese restaurant that was not going to insult me with crappy sweet and sour dishes or tacky sweet glazey fried chicken nuggets. Halleluia I found Black Pearl. There food made this Asian girls heart melt. Just like being home! Black Bean ANYTHING is great. Two people can eat here family style for under $25 and get variety and filled tummies! The sweet owner at the front was so humble and eager to impress, that I labored to explain each detail of appreciation I had for the chefs choices. GREAT JOB. If Alabamaians don't know it, I do. This is delicious Chinese at a great price. Service was energetic and happy to serve as well.

For lunch I ask for the Chinese traditional menu and tried some authentic Chinese food. For some reason you have to ask for it, they don't give it to you otherwise. We tried the jalapeño tripe & shrimp with lobster sauce. Both dishes were tasty. I enjoyed the tripe but will get real beef, chicken or seafood next trip. Both dishes we're hearty and plentiful The shrimp w/lobster sauce was very good. There was a little confusion and some timing issues but overall a very nice experience.

Good food, exceptional hot and sour soup. Egg roll & spring roll weak. Price high for not having table service. Update: New Owners. Food was off a little. Added side salad which was nice and cold. Back to table service. Better than the typical strip mall Chinese place. New owner friendly.

Ordered three dishes. Only the vegie was good. I got the so-called secret Chinese menu, but the dishes on it are not typical Chinese... There was one dish which was very weird taste, or I should say very bad taste. (pork with a kind of sauce, don't know how to call it). but.. very disappointed. oh and the soup (sour and spicy soup tastes weird too), maybe Americanized...

Just discovered this restaurant through www.The TakeOutBham.com . I tried the Pad Thai, fried dumplings and coconut soup. All three were delicious and definitely a step up from the typical strip mall restaurant fare. As an extra bonus, they deliver. You can't beat that!

Since moving to Birmingham, I have eaten here regularly. I can honestly say, I have not found better peppered steak in Birmingham. My wife (and I) are also quite fond of the Sesame Chicken... Above all, I have to say - The Cool Lettuce Wraps are where it's at... These things are consistently excellent. If there is one con I can list for Black Pearl, its that anytime we eat here, I am forced to order these due to my wife and my addiction to them now. The Crab Won Tons are great - had them tonight for the first time... They are what inspired me to write this review... For $6, got 6 overstuffed large won tons - very nice... Cup of sweet and sour to dip them in... I hope this place sticks around... Please, for the love of all that is good and fluffy in the Universe... If you want Asian food and are going in the 280 area, go here or Surin 280... Waaaayyyy better than PF's... Any day of the week - any dish on the menu.

This place has the absolute best noodle bowl I have had anywhere. Depending what I am in the mood for dictates which Chinese restaurant I patronize. When it comes to noodles, this is the place to go. I am also a fan of their spring rolls, and no complaints with their special hot and sour soup. Prices are great, especially for lunch. (My last visit was before the "reopening", so I have not yet rendered a verdict on the new format.)
