The food is ok, but what is really getting on my nerves with this place is the way they prioritize phone orders. The cashier will answer the phone instead of helping the person standing at the register. So then, even when you've been in line for ten minutes someone not even in the building gets their food started cooking before you can even order making you wait even longer. It rubs off on the customers too. Just because they call in they think they can skip the entire line, even though the time it takes for them in line is just about as long as anyone else. And this is constant. I give it at least 2 stars just because the food is better than fast food, but not great or anything. Its good for late night when everything else is closed as well. But for the style of food, there are better options and the whole phone order issue is just totally annoying.

It's 2:00 am and you're hungry? It's Christmas Day and everything is closed? Go to Al's. They are 24/7 365 days a year. They have a wonderful falafel and don't forget they have chicken fingers, french fries, cheese fries, an amazing cheeseburger, loaded giant baked potatoes, and mint sweet tea. Yum.

I returned tonight. Same place, but I tried the sampler plate. Although the tabouli seemed fresh and the pita bread was warm, the rest of it was not remarkable. So, I'm downgrading it to three stars.

I always get the Turkey Melt or BBQ Chicken Baker, which is the largest loaded potato you've ever seen. It's so fantastic! Their fries are fantastic. Their honey mustard dipping sauce is great, and this is coming from a honey mustard Connoisseur. It's great sitting outside, if you can find a table. It's very small inside, so just expect close quarters.

I basically lived here in college. Would walk from our dorm at UAB and study. Or would walk from 5 points to dorm after drinking all night and eat here at like 4am (unless we went to Marty's to continue drinking). Anyway. Every time I am in B'ham I go to Al's. Came back into town recently for a funeral. Took my wife here to show her where I went to school, yada yada. Had to bring her to Al's and let her try the tea. I've been trying to recreate it since I moved away in 2003 but I haven't quite nailed it yet. I'll keep working on it. I think the price for the gyro is the same price it was when I started UAB in 1999.

Food quaility: Excellent! Open kitchen lets you see you food being made. Even the tomatoes are cut fresh when you order. Taste: Excellent! We arrived here at about 2:30 P.M. on a beautiful Thursday. There were only a couple of people ahead of us in line, outside seating was empty and only one was at the inside seating. However, as we sat there, a steady stream of customers soon had quite a few outside places taken and a few inside. This place is highly popular. I ordered the kafta kabob entree with a Greek salad and the other accompanying sides. The kabob was not good. Lest it be assumed that I am not familiar with kafta, I have had this at other places and found it to be excellent. The hommos(hummus) was okay, but not seasoned with enough garlic or tahini for me. The small portion of salad was only mediocre and the rice was not a hit, either. The rice tasted like a mix with chicken broth, not like a house made dish. Pita bread was from Joujou's, and, was good. The restaurant itself gave off an aura of uncleanliness. This restaurant is in the middle of UAB, and, what appeals to students does not necessarily appeal to others. There is, though, an eclectic clientele here, and, it was a fun people watching place. My wife had a plain stuffed baked potato, and, it was a baked potato. The only other comments to make about it would be that it was huge and the bacon bits were fake bacon. I really liked the area and the interesting people, but I did not care for the food or the overall dining experience. I would not go back to this restaurant. That is not to say, however, that maybe another selection would not have been good, and, you might want to try it at least once for yourself, if you live in the area. I would not recommend it for people who have much driving to do to get to it.

I'm giving Al's 3 stars because it's super convenient that they're open 24/7, and they've filled my belly more than once after a late night out. But this is the kind of place that I only eat if nothing else is open... Better than fast food joints for sure, but not the best Mediterranean food in Birmingham by any means.

For the purpose of getting a bite to eat at any time of the day, Al's is the place to go. If I went to school in Bham, I'd prob go here on most late nights. Fairly cheap food, large menu selection, and open 24 hours. It's especially great sitting at the outside tables during the warmer months. I like the simple stuff here. My favorites are any of the kabobs and the chicken wings.

I like this little place as a late night stop for food and time with friends. The baked potatoes are so good and filling. The patio is a great place to relax with a small fountain and lots of seating. Try this alternative to the Purple Onion.

O Al's Deli. Where can I start. It has to be the only place with such a large variety of delicious food that is open 24 hrs. This place alone makes me envy the resident of greater Birmingham. I will give you this advice when trying to choose your order. If all else fails just get something with chicken, but if I had to get specific the chicken and steak combo baker is BOMB!!! just make sure you don't eat a couple hours before cause it's huge.

Seriously, my mouth is watering at just the thought of their chicken fingers...or their bakers...or their gyros...or their burgers right now. Al, whoever you are, thank you for feeding my late night munchies throughout High School and College. You are, in fact, THE man.

If you go to UAB, you go to Al's. If you live in Southside, you go to Al's. If you've been bar hopping-dance clubbing in 5 Points, you usually end up @ Al's. Al's holds so many memories for me. It's where I ate almost everyday in college. It's where, after many late nights out @ Zen, Club Red, 1150, or Banana Hoe's (I mean Joe's) I went with friends to satiate the drunken monsters that are borne from taking endless shots and dancing. If you go @ 3AM on a Friday or Saturday night, expect to stand in line. The chicken fingers plate is most popular. I remember when it cost $5.50. Honestly everything on the menu is worth trying. The wraps are huge. The vegetable soup is perfect spice and tomatoe-y-ness, served with pita bread. If you're ravenous, get a baker. I particularly love the broccoli baker. How much do I love this baker, you wonder? One night, after clubbing & completely inebriated, I DEMANDED to go to Al's. My friends, fearing for their lives, agreed that Al's was the best idea ever. While standing in the longest line imaginable, it was suggested that we leave. I loudly screamed no, that there was no way in hell we were leaving until I had my broccoli baker. In the car, I proceeded to demand to be given my baker to eat en route home. I was overtaken with drunken hunger & I felt as if I didn't eat right then, I would violently murder everyone in the car. My demands were not met. And that was when I decided to take the gum I was currently chewing and smear in on the passenger window.---THAT's how much I love the broccoli baker. That's also the night my friends learned to not let me go hungry.

In my opinion, Al's is the best of the 10th ave late night eateries. I have been here probably hundreds of times of my years Birmingham and have never been disappointed. The service is friendly and fast. The food is cheap and delicious. What more could you want at 2 am.? On my last trip I indulged in the chili baker. It was huge and packed with butter, sour cream, onions, cheese and of course, chili. Its comfort food and I love it. I am also partial to Al's gyro plate with hummus. It a ton of food for $10. The hummus is creamy and garlicky and they have this interesting sauce that is just plain awesome in a cup.

I have only eaten here once so I cannot speak for everything, but I can say that my food (the falafel plate) was excellent compared to many other places I have been - on par with the best places I go in the San Francisco bay area (my home turf). I ordered the falafel plate and Baklava. The falafel plate was so large - and so tasty that I ate every last bit - that I took the giant hunk of Baklava with me and I am eating it now - delicious! I stopped in at California's lunchtime (mid afternoon here) but I can imagine the place filling up quickly since there were only a handful of booths as someone else had indicated.

Moussaka rules everything around me, GREEK! get da grape leaves- drachma, drachma bills yallllll Ok, actually im not sure if this place is Greek, or rather just Mediterranean "other", but It is very similar style and set up to a NY/ New England style Greek- sub diner/ road stand burger shop DQ knock off. Unfortunetly, if you wanna play those games, you gotta produce- and its close, very very close to back east- I would say prob the best Gyros this side of the Appalachian Peloponnesus.

I love this place! The interior is tiny and seating is limited, so if the weather is not nice, get there early before the rush. The atmosphere is very much like a "hole-in-the-wall" diner, but in my opinion, those are usually the best places. The staff is very friendly and they have asked each time if we enjoyed everything. My favorite is the chicken salad wrap with cheese fries. The wrap is HUGE and they give you a large amount of fries. The chicken salad itself is seasoned beautifully - it's very different, but oh so good. The prices are very reasonable as well. It's only $9ish tax and all for the wrap combo (which includes unlimited drink) with cheese on the fries. That easily compares with fast food places these days and the portion sizes make it well worth it. If you're ever in the area, definitely give this place a try. You won't regret it!

I'll be honest and say Al's is kind a one stop shop for me. As a student I ate there because it was fast, cheap, and convenient to where I lived (southside) and went to school at UAB. And it's 24/7 and the best place to go if you've had one too many and need some sustenance. Now I eat there because it's fast, cheap, and convenient to where I live and work. And it's 24/7 so you can eat and for cheaps after your late movie or work party and its still the best place to go if you've had one too many and need some sustenance.

This is one of those places I always find myself at after a long night out. Since it's one of the the only places open 24 hours that isn't a fast food drive thru, I prefer it for late night food. They have a sizable menu so I haven't gotten around to everything yet, but it consists mostly of your standard Greek food. Personal favorite of mine are the bakers. Loaded baked potatoes that are so big you'll be eating on it for a couple of days. It is a really popular location (especially late night) so expect a bit of a line. Outside seating is great, but that damn fountain gets annoying.

Al's - friggin' love it - mostly for the atmosphere, but the food's pretty good too. My friends and I usually drop on the place during the warm months to sit outside and people-watch, shoot the shiz, grab a bite, and all-around chill. It's located in Southside so the clientele is generally UAB students and employees, but others from all over the city visit as well. As a result, you kinda get a college hangout-kinda feel to the joint, which is pretty cool for those of us moving well past the college years. lol The cuisine is Mediterranean/American, so you can do gyros, Falafel, burgers, potato bakers, chicken fingers, etc. - essentially something for everyone. And the later the better - 24/7 operation, and there's no such thing as too late. The staff is friendly, and despite some of the people looking kinda sketchy sometimes, Al's is pretty safe, with the occasional policeman hanging around sometimes for a meal during shift or just hanging to talk with the workers. Long story less long - Al's is a great late night spot for some good grub that's not deep-fried, or only suitable after 1am (I'm looking at you, Krystal's). Trust a night owl. See ya out there! ;)

I got food poisoning once, but obviously that didn't diminish my love. If you find yourself in need of greasy or Greek food at an ungodly hour, Al's has your back.

This place gets 4 stars for me because it is open 24/7. Very few restaurants are open 24/7 around here. I mean of course you have your fast food places, but Al's gives you the option of not going to Denny's or Waffle House. So yay for that. It doesn't matter if you come for lunch (check), around 2am because you are completely trashed and need greasy food (check) or if you get out of a late night movie and haven't had dinner yet (check). It is a great place to people watch. And let me tell you, if you come at the right time, you will definitely be entertained. You might even feel you're the only sane one around. But that's what's fun about everyone being different. The food is definitely not 4 or 5 star worthy, but it is pretty decent, and the portions are large. I am quite happy with their chicken fingers though. I tried their falafel for the first time last night, but I didn't like it at all. No flavor and incredibly dry. But the plate came with mixed rice, salad and hummus. So that made up for it. They also have mint tea, and I am a sucker for mint tea. My dining partner always gets the veggie burger, which is alright but it had way too much mustard. The only thing negative I have to say about this place is about the bathrooms. They are absolutely disgusting and smell horrible.

What time is right at Al's?? All the time!!! This is a Southside institution that is open 24hr's a day and provides some pretty tasty, cheap Mediterranean fare as well as some basic U S and A staples. From burgers to kabobs to shawarma to chicken tenders this is a wonderful place to go when you are working late or testing the limits of your liver till 4 am. Be prepared to stand in line if its stupid late, but it is definitely worth it.

Al's is one of the only places I genuinely miss in Birmingham. I began going to Al's when I was in high school and went there regularly for several years. I almost always ordered the veggie baker or veggie burger. Both are very delicious. Al's is open 24 hours, and I would say that it's bussier the later it gets. The next time I go back to Birmingham I will definitely be chowing down on a delicious veggie baker.

This place has a classic college town feel complete with no frills, cheap food, and an outdoor patio. Menu is plenty diverse even for the pickiest of eaters. Gyros are good especially if you get one between slicings when the meat has had time to brown on the spit for a few minutes. Their tzatziki is made with sour cream which makes it thicker and pretty tasty to boot. Always packed with college students so you know it's good!

My authentic Greek/Mediterranean friends even say it's "okay." That must be a good sign!! 4 stars for the building and seating appearance; otherwise it'd be 5 stars! UAB students favorite, especially since they offer a free drink with entree. Open 24/7 (scares me..the workers almost seem like they're slave labored! All very kind and efficient though. Some of the best food I have had has come from a small restaurant such as this. Located in the Birmingham Southside, it is located so very close to the UAB campus and it seems they are the majority of the restaurants business. The menu is varied but my favorite dishes are the Potato Baker (any kind), they are huge, and can easily feed two people, then they chicken finger plate. Such simple menu items but so full of flavor. The interior of the restaurant is a little dated, and the exterior eating area could surely use some updating as well. The staff isn't particularly friend but who cares at a place like this. Try it for yourself!

I love Al's, and it's one of the things I miss most about B'ham. Strangely enough, the chicken barbecue baked potato is my favorite thing on the menu, which is in no way Mediterranean... It's basically one giant baked potato (or two smaller potatoes crammed together to resemble a giant one), and then filled with all the good, bad for you stuff you'd like to find on your baked potato. So. Good. Also enjoy that it's 24 hours, that it has strawberry Fanta in the soda machine, and all the outdoor seating.

Oddly enough, Birmingham seems to be the capital of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean grills. There's all the Purple Onions, Sam's, Sinbad's, Pyramids, Mikaro's, Pita Stop, Nabeel's and the list goes on and on... In my opinion, Al's is the best of the bunch. The courtyard is great when the weather's nice, and you can bring your pets. Everyone who works here is so friendly, and it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Delicious! I have to say that one of the best thing about Al's is the fact that it's open ALL THE TIME. Not only is that hard to find (there's barely fast food that's open 24hrs) but it's GOOD FOOD. Last time I was in B'ham, I was dying for something besides BBQ and ended up at Al's Deli. So glad I did. I had a grilled chicken dish with rice and salad with a side of hummus. Everything was nicely cooked and tasted great. Be sure to save room for some baklava. It comes from a local bakery and is very good. The little courtyard is also a plus when it's nice out.

Al's is awesome. I've been away from home for a little while now and since have been craving a falafel. After our show a kid took us to this place and i couldn't have been happier. upon arrival i was slightly worried that it was going to take forever, the line was huge! much to my surprise it moved pretty rapidly and i very quickly found myself at the front the the line giving my order. after ordering my falafel i was even more surprised how quickly it came. it was delicious! the outdoor patio was great. we caught a break from the frequent rain showers and enjoyed the warm southern evening. overall this place was great. speedy service, great prices, great food, the out door seating, and best of all a good selection of american dishes as well so even my picky band mates could enjoy! if i ever come back to alabama i'm coming back to Al's for sure

Of all the 24 hour places to eat in Birmingham, Al's Deli is probably my favorite. This is because Al's is quick, clean and the food is amazing compared to what else is available all the time. Between all the limited options for food at 4 a.m. in the morning, the Al's Rib-eye Steak Pita with fries and a drink has got to be a reason to stay out. If I could find any problems with the place, I would probably only say that a lack of seating inside can be a drawback when its busy and raining outside. If its warm and clear though, the patio is a great place to eat late night.

The parentals and sibling arrived in town and after moving even more of my stuff, we were hungry and too tired to go out. Not wanting fast food or pizza, I knew AL's would be a winner. We got three bakers to share amongst the four of us: and still had plenty leftover! The bbq chicken baker, the gyro baker, and fried chicken baker were what we all sampled. Each one had plenty of meat, and even more cheese and buttery goodness. I called in the order, and was told 15-20 minutes. I arrived 15 minutes after calling, and they were almost done with the order, so everything was piping hot and fresh. My favorite was the fried chicken baker, with the gyro being my second favorite. One note: must love BBQ sauce to order these bakers. Though I guess you could ask them to hold the sauce if you aren't a fan.

Oh no no no. This place is no Bueno. For a late night snack I would drive 3 blocks over and go to Makarios. The gyro at Al's is more like a roll up situation with some type of non-tzatziki sauce. Not so yum. I was a little drunk so at the time it was ok. But not worth the calories. Best part, the patio is pup friendly.

Al's. What can I say about an old standby. The food is filling and good. If you haven't been outside for a while, they have a patio. I like the chicken special, but it's almost a secret menu item. Grilled chicken on a bed of wild rice, hummus, a salad with crispy veggies, and fruit garnish is pretty and tasty. They're open al the time. The potatoes are great. I also like their gyros and chick in a sack.The wait is variable, but usually not nuts. They are very generous to student groups and they used to give you a free drink with student id. I haven't been a student in a while, so I'm unsure. Good place to take a breather.

They're famous for their monstrous baked potatoes covered in mounds of cheese and meat. They're also famous for never, ever closing. Raining fire outside? Al's is open. Ten feet of snow? Al's is open. Al's burned down? You better believe there's going to be an awesome Middle Eastern man standing in the rubble by the flat top, grilling up some onions. Al's is most busy right after 2 AM when the bars close. The line reaches out the door and everyone in the place is drunk as a skunk. Please be nice to the person taking your order. Indoor seating is limited, so make your trip when it's warm enough to eat outside. The outdoor section is pretty cool and can be a lot of fun. Took off a star because I hate potatoes. Added it back because I realized the hell these workers go through every Friday and Saturday night. Go to Al's.

Want a good place to eat late at night? Then try out Al's. I had the gyro and it was delicious. They have seating inside and outside which is nice. Also, they have a wide menu to choose from and the prices are reasonable. I would recommend this place if you are out and need food and all the other places are closed.

I'd love to come back here again on our next trip to Birmingham! We stopped in for a quick lunch on our way back to the airport from a wedding weekend in Huntsville. The bride went to UAB and recommended for lunch, and said the cheesy ranch fries were a must! I wasn't feeling super great when we arrived, and was really upset because my food looked/smelled so great - but I just couldn't stomach anything at the moment, so I'll definitely be back. Started with the cheese fries: I don't think we ordered the fries she recommended, no taste of ranch...just cheese and some seasoning on top. I think we know to ask specifically for the "cheesy ranch fries" vs. just the cheese fries on the menu. Out-of-towner mistake! I ordered the chicken kabobs and like I said, they smelled amazing and from what I was able to eat tasted even better! Will definitely have to try again next time when I'm feeling better. My boyfriend got the BBQ gyro - my goodness this was the largest potato I've EVER seen! Basically a BBQ stuffed potato but with gyro meat instead of brisket or pulled pork. He got it all the way (sour cream, butter, chives, etc.). He demolished it. I didn't taste the sauce, but it looked really good! We sat outside under the covered area close to the building, and while the ambiance isn't the fanciest by any means, it was still a great spot for lunch on a pretty day! I can only image what it's like after the bars close...being that it's open 24/7 and right in the middle of a college campus. I would have loved that place in my college days! We'll be back for sure to try again!

A Birmingham, UAB, and South Side landmark, you're nobody until you've been here. Open 24/7, even on holidays, Al's has and remains to be the place to go for late night, or anytime, snacking. A combination Mediterranean/American joint, it has burgers & fries, potatoes-huge ones stuffed with BBQ chicken, gyros, hummus, and even nachos. For good food anytime, come to Al's.

Good ole Al's. Open 24/7/365. They don't close down for anything. It is hands down the best place in Birmingham for a late night meal. They got everything from loaded potatoes and gyros to hamburgers and cheese fries. Reasonably priced with excellent service. Would highly recommend.

First off...you can get their delicious food any time you want, because they are open all day and night! Inside is very small and crowded, but there is an awesome patio outside. Most everything on the menu is good, but the HUGE, loaded baked potatoes are awesome!

Based on yesterday's visit, I have to downgrade Al's big time. First of all, it was absolutely freezing inside the restaurant. I mean, the coldest building I've ever been to outside of a Vegas ice bar. Everybody was complaining while waiting in line. I mentioned it to the cashier and despite agreeing, he did not offer to lower the temperature. I could really not understand why they made the temperature so cold, their air conditioning cost must be through the roof. If I had to take a guess at the temperature, I would say 50-55 degrees inside. The food was really just not nearly as good as it was a few years back. I just cannot give Al's above two stars.

Absolutely one of my favorite places to go in Birmingham! Fair prices, open round the clock! It is the first place in Birmingham I want to go because it's open all night and we spontaneously go out without warning... I never have to worry about where to get good food. Their hummus is awesome with the grilled chicken!

When you first go in here you might not think anything special about this place, but it's surprisingly very good! I really like to order the hummus and fries and dip them in each other with hot sauce! My boyfriend loves the chicken bbq baker, they are huge! The chicken fingers and kabobs are very good too. Als is open 24/7 so it's a perfect late night spot, but don't go if you are too too hungry, because the line will be out the door.

This place holds a very special place in my heart. Being a musician you always want to find a good place to go out to eat after you're done playing your show. Most of the time it's late and your options grow slim. This place is open 24/7 and has been a Birmingham staple for a long time. I usually keep it simple when I eat here, chicken fingers & cheese fries. But I definitely suggest branching out with their menu. They have great tasting burgers and their baked potatoes are huge and insanely delicious. The authentic Mediterranean cuisine is just as good as anything else on the menu. The outdoor seating makes this place perfect if you happen to be with a large crew or if you want to embrace the sounds of the city. Whether you're eating here for lunch or at two in the morning you will not be disappointed.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I was in Birmingham for a month recently and everyone raves about this place, and the Yelp reviews seemed to agree- so I figured I'd give it a try. At first look, the plate I ordered (Kafta kabob plate) looked delicious, but something was strangely off. I gasped as I removed the pieces of pita bread covering the plate to reveal slices of cheap American cheese covering the Kabob meatballs. What in God's name have they done? It took me a few seconds to recuperate but I resolved to try this abomination of a Kabob- after all, this place is christened "Mediterranean-American" cuisine, but not quite yet. I first decided to try the hummus, which was surprisingly good, but again somehow just a little off- something was just not quite right with it... perhaps I've been spoiled by the ubiquitous presence of authentic mediterranean fare in Dallas. Finally, I decided to try the Kabob. I broke off a small piece and noted that it kind of crumbled off- not a good sign. I tasted the piece of the meat and my worst fears were immediately realized. The meatball was bland, dry and paired horribly with that cheap cheese. My tastebuds were saved by the side greek salad. A few more bites of those meatballs for fear of being wasteful and I was done. The wild rice pairing definitely didn't help me get through that meal- I mean really? Wild rice? With Middle Eastern food?? Certainly didn't help this place's case in my book. So, perhaps this is what Birmingham is looking for in a Mediterranean restaurant; or perhaps there is simply no better alternative in the city. Either way, I hope to one day see a more authentic Mediterranean option and let the people of the city decide!

Something weird just happened to me here. The guy running the cash register seemed like he was in charge. He swiped my credit card, but instead of handing it back to me, he laid it face up in the palm of his hand so that the front of my card was visible. He even lifted his hand somewhat. He had a sneaky look on his face. I looked up: there was a camera mounted in the low ceiling right over his hand holding my card. Now that camera is probably there to cut back on employee theft, but seems like it has multiple purposes. Maybe he wasn't trying to steal my CC info, but then again I've had enough life experiences that this just seemed as obvious as the proverbial duck. I cancelled my card right there outside the restaurant.

There aren't many places open 24 hours a day. I love knowing they are always open. The gyros, cheese fries, omelets, and bakers are amazing. Their portions are huge. Their chicken/tuna salad is a little too sweet for me. Even though I graduated two years ago, I still go back all the time lol.

This place is CRAAAAAAAZY!!!! There is a hot babe here in leather pants rn and I think I love her. She's on the phone and I'm trying to eaves drop to see if she has a boyfriend. Not sure. I poured my coffee into a large STYROFOAM cup intended for what the locals here call 'soda'. I can hardly understand what the guy behind the counter is saying, but, my orde came out correctly so that's tight. The hottie is off the phone now and drunkenly talking to a guy, I think he's her boyfriend. :-( My heart is broken. My belly is full. Get the falafel. Body mod freaks welcome.

Simply best food around late night if you're in the Southside area. Servings are big as well as the crowd there. Quick service and the food is right off the grill. Two thumbs up!

I don't totally get the appeal of this place. The food wasn't terrible, but I got the tuna pita sandwich and it lacked flavor had way too much mayo and later I had a stomach ache, maybe because the sandwich just left me feeling kinda blah. Also I tried to get an itemized receipt and you think I was asking for him to do calculus, like its not that hard to write the items next to the prices on the receipt and sign it... apparently doing so is a big deal. Which was irritating also. But the service was pretty quick and I got my meal pretty fast which is always a plus.

I recently checked this place out with a couple of friends. I enjoyed my chicken kabob and loved that it came with homemade hummus! Very delicious. My friend had this gigantic baked potato with cheese and chicken. He said that it looked gentically engineered and I agree completely. It is a nice location situated in the heart of the university side of UAB. I would definitely come again.

The food is mediocre. I gave it three stars because of its operating hours and crowd. It attracts a lot of people and has ample seating. I think the place could be a lot cleaner and really looks like something I would see along side a desolate highway on a motorcycle ride. Despite that, the food is ok, the service is fast and decent, and they usually have a nice group of people around enjoying things.

BBQ chicken baker. My favorite food item in Birmingham and possibly the world. I don't live in Southside anymore so I don't eat them nearly as much as I'd like but it's worth the trip every time. I've had a few other things off the menu and everything's been delicious but the baker is the star of the show.

Awesome awesome awesome food! That sums it up. Every thing we ordered tasted so good. We came in on Christmas eve, the place was busy and we weren't sure his the food will be, the wait was so worth it. We are coming back later this week to try out other foods. We ordered chicken kabob, shrimp kabob and an omelette. All the plates had large portions, we left full and satisfied. So pleased we came and tried this restaurant.

For whatever reason, I get nostalgic when I visit Al's. Too many times have I visited this Mediterranean food mecca for so many different reasons - grabbing a quick bite after classes, after a long night out, to meet up with friends for lunch, or even to witness a drag show (whom of which had come from Al's on Seventh, but that's another review for another time). Sitting on the patio and watching the sun set over Children's Hospital in the distance, UAB to your left and right, Lakeview district and Highland Avenue to your right...personally, I think it's a great place to reflect on how great of a city Birmingham is. Enough with the sap. Al's food is delicious, heavy, and does the trick when you're starving. The gyros are juicy and awesome tasting because of the tzatziki sauce. Hummus is my favorite in the city at this moment and the french fries couldn't be crispier. The cheeseburger is okay, but Al's isn't a burger joint so I'll forgive it.

My honey raves of this place. Late night all I hear is I'm going to Al's well......Upon my arrival I wanted to know what the hype was all about. I was very hungry and ready to chow down. He recommend the baker and I insisted I wanted my own potato because I was starving. Of course I gave in and decided to share well.......let's just say in this case the woman was not right because he came back with a HUGE baked potato on top was grilled bar-b-que chicken and inside the soft potato was sour cream, butter and cheese, he opted out of the bacon and onions however it was to perfection. Even splitting it in half I was still full. We sat outside to eat since I am an outdoorsy person and the atmosphere was really nice and welcoming. The wind blew perfect as the rays of sun bounced off of us. It is close to a college campus but there were a few people who appeared to be on lunch also. I enjoyed the setting as well as the food. I hope to visit again and try something different on the menu.

I was here when it first opened and loved it. Over the years it has gone up in price. Pita bread used to come with a baker and now it's extra. I figure if I pay that much you should kick in a few pieces of bread. I still patronize every once in a while but it just seems to get worse. The MAIN problem is when it first opened all the staff was really friendly and eager to help with any problem. Now I feel I'm imposing on them just by ordering. Always seems like I'm wasting their time.

There was a time in my life, when I had a standing middle of the night appointment at Al's. Sadly, but thankfully, those days are long gone. I now dream of my chicken fingers and fries on a nigh... weekly basis. As far as Mediterranean grills go, Al's is my favorite in town. Every now and then, I would venture away from my chicken fingers and fries with a side of buffalo sauce and get something authentic. Usually a gyro with tzatziki. It was always fantastic. You might have to put up with a couple of drunk college kids if you venture here late at night. Let's not kid ourselves, if you're here at 4am, you probably deserve it.

Their food is great whether you are having a casual lunch outside or you're stumbling in drunk at 2am. I have never had bad service or bad food here. I love everything I have ever gotten here, but one of my favorites is their chicken fingers! Last time I was a fatty and got their fries with chili and cheese and OMG. They were great. My best friend is a honey mustard snob and says they have the best anywhere. She even orders it with just fries sometimes. I love Al's!
