I did not stay here so I can't comment on that. I did eat there a couple of times and was completely satisfied with my meals. It was the more upscale option for Yakutat. Sort of spendy but the food was good and hey, everything in Yakutat is spendy. The other service I used these guys for was delivery of fish back home after a day on the water. They met our boat at the docks and carried the fish back to the lodge. They hung the halibut up on the display and allowed us to take our obligatory photos of the great fishermen and our quarry. They held if for me until I returned home and a day later I received it. It was very efficient and surprisingly affordable and folks were nice. Pete did the paperwork for us and was friendly and efficient. He notified me when it was on the way and supplied the tracking number. I think Pete has done this a few times. I didn't catch the name of the young man who picked up the fish and filleted it but he was very personable. He even recognized us at the airport the next day as we were leaving and said hello.

The worst meal and lodging ever in Yakutat. The best part of Glacier Bear is when you're driving out of their parking lot. We order their halibut and chips, they served us Costco beer battered halibut. When you're in Yakutat, you expect to be served fresh fish (especially during halibut season). My other friends ordered other items and had a similar experience. The bar reminded me of walking into the bar in Star Wars where Luke Skywalker meets HansSolo, the characters and entertainment were something to behold. The smoke filled the restaurant and not pleasant.

The first thing you new to know about GBL is that it's a fishing lodge. Okay? There's no concierge, the cell service is spotty, the WiFi has a short range, and the carpet in the rooms is straight out of 1975. That said... The people are very nice, the location (smack in the middle of the 36 miles of road Yakutat boasts) is convenient, every room I saw had 2 beds and a third rollaway, and they meet every flight at the airport with a van to bring you and your gear in. The food and drink prices are very reasonable, and while the food isn't worthy of Emeril it's still hearty, ample, well-prepared, and tastes great. If you come expecting a swanky hotel, you're going to be very disappointed. If you're coming up to spend all day in the river or on the ocean fishing, this is the right place for you. the people will take good care of you and show you a great time.

Stayed at the mostly remodeled Glacier Bear Lodge. I have stayed in Yakutat before and this was a first at the Glacier Bear. It was a work trip and I spent 2 nights. The remodeling following an episode of Hotel Impossible isn't quite complete, but I stayed in a room that had been done. It was comfortable, clean, and nice. Decorations were really nice. This is an older inn and the noise can be a bit much. They even provide ear plugs in the room. The downsides are no TV in the room, the cell coverage is terrible at best(Yakutat has only had cell service for less than a year), and the wifi is very weak(it is satellite fed and very slow anyway). Breakfast was include with the room and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Definately a place for fisherman and outdoor types, but very comfortable.

My husband has wanted to Steelhead fish the Situk River for eons, so this was the year we did it. River fishing wasn't ideal because of low clear water, but was still incredible. We spent two days on the ocean as well, catching Chinook, Halibut and a variety of rock fish. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The staff was helpful and friendly. The food was amazing. Talks of hooking upwards of 100 salmon in day might lure us back up to try another world-class Alaska fishery. If you are considering Glacier Bear Lodge, put any concerns you have to rest, book your trip, and prepare for a memorable adventure!
