Crowded rainy day, and the Pioneer Café is full - with tourists and locals, fueling for a day of chilly wet weather. Best thing that happened was that the coffee refills were pretty much endless, and it wasn't toooo bad. Coffee, a little weak. Food, a little bland and not too special, though the hash browns were nice and crispy. But, it is a diner after all, and fine dining is not what one's after when sitting in a booth with salt, pepper, ketchup, and tiny containers of grape jelly on the table. For carbs, caffeine and warmth, the Pioneer Café will suit, now and again.

Like others have already said, it's a greasy spoon diner. We came here for breakfast and the portions were very large - four egg omelets, three eggs with my corned beef hash. The hash was from a can, but that should've been expected. Overall, for the type of restaurant it is, the food was on par, tasted good, and kept us full until dinner.

BLAH! We wanted a fresh fish sandwich. Fresh not fried...well it was fried. There is nothing special about this place at all! The waitress was incredibly friendly but the food is so boring. I wanted some fresh french fries like we had in Skagway but nope...frozen little potatoes is all they had. The place is clean.

It's a traditional greasy spoon cafe in Ketchikan. My husband and I came here for breakfast after our cruise ship docked. The plates are huge - I recommend getting a half size if it's available. My omelette was perfectly cooked and the toast was great. We tried the reindeer sausage but it wasn't that different from any other sausage I've had. Skip it. There were quite a few locals as well as tourists.

We ordered four meals and three of them had mistakes. Our waitress must have went on break as there was about a 20-minute break mid-meal where nobody came to our table. I finally took our empty glasses up to the main area just so we could get refills. Our waitress finally returned, just to set our bill down on the table. Without a word. She never came back to get our credit card, so I took it up to the cashier and again - not a word. Not a "thanks for eating her" or "have a good day." Just a really sour attitude from start to finish. I've never understood people who take customer service jobs that rely on TIPS if they are going to be rude to their customers. I don't know the waitresses name, but it wasn't the two blond ladies. The food was OK, exactly what you'd expect for a greasy spoon type café. The fries were actually pretty good, but everything else was just something to eat when you want a quick and easy meal. One of us had pancakes and they were horrible, tasted like rubber.

Came in for lunch one day. 50s diner vibe with a Route 66 map on the wall. Menu has good selection of breakfast items, burgers, sandwiches and seafood. Today I had the hot turkey sandwich, son the chili burger and wife the shrimp po boy. Portions are large but the food tasted like it came out of a can. My mashed tasted like box mash, the gravy like canned gravy, although the turkey was good. Typical for Alaska the prices were high and service Ok. Still, not many eating options in Ketchikan, so I'd come back to try the breakfast.

I give the food 3 stars but the service was just awful. I recently moved up to Ketchikan and was told this place had good breakfast and they served it all day. I walked in and thought it had a cool diner vibe and was excited to try it. The server had her head in her phone and greeted me by saying just sit wherever without even looking up. It then took 10 minutes for her to come back and get my drink order. After putting my order in she didn't come back until she dropped the check off. I mean someone else had to bring my food out because she was on her cell again. The eggs Benedict was OK but I wouldn't go back for it. Overall I would say just pass this place up and find somewhere else to get your grub on

    Typical greasy spoon!

Fish n chips were not real great, considering we are right next to the ocean. Stick to breakfast items, or better yet, don't bother.

Look, this is Ketchikan Alaska, it is not the Waldorf or the Fairmont. It is what it is, a greasy spoon. But it a very good greasy spoon. Service was attentive. My coffee never went dry. The food was very good and cooked the way I asked the first time.

Surprisingly good food. The burgers were really good. The service is not super friendly but it is a tourist town. Great for a quick bite.

After 5 days at sea -on a cruise ship- all we wanted was an authentic, greasy spoon, diner breakfast and Pioneer Cafe, didn't disappoint. The 50's style diner hits all the notes. Good coffee, healthy portions, local vibe and slow service. That last item wasn't meant to be a dig, it's just the way they seemed to operate. If the food is going to take a while, I'd definitely like to have the coffee flowing to wake me up. When the food finally arrived, you realize that it was worth the wait. My p.i.c.* had the chicken fried steak and you could tell that they created that masterpiece right there in house. I had the Country Breakfast and those biscuits and gravy didn't disappoint. My arteries probably cursed my name for the rest of the day, but hey, you only live once and you'll probably live long if you treat yourself to a decadent breakfast like this every once in a while. At the end of the day, I would definitely recommend Pioneer Cafe.

We were in town for the day early and went searching for a breakfast joint. We found this and thought it was outstanding. The best chicken fried steak and three egg plate I ever recall having. Really it was that good, I told them at the time and wanted to give them this shout out. Excellent jobs folks.

Good diner food,...comfort food. We were in port on a cruise, our 'cabbie' took us there for breakfast before a full day tour. Would eat there again,..seems like a 'locals' place.

A basic 1950s style diner, located between the waterfront and Creek Street. The food is basic, but hearty and good. I recommend this place for a no-nonsense breakfast. They're open early (before other places, before the cruise ship traffic arrives). Folks are friendly. They have the usual diner breakfast food - eggs, omelets, pancakes, bacon, sausage etc. There are no surprises, but it's a friendly little place that delivers exactly what you'd expect.

This is small town dining. After grazing at the buffet at sea, real home made corned beef, in all of its greasy salty form, can not be beat. The hash browns were spot on, crispy and a little bacon dripping taste. The breakfast menu was average and prices are what you expect when you are in place like this. The portion sizes were very good. Service was very deliberate, but I didn't come for fast food either. Oh yeah, they know you're tourists but they still will talk to you! This is were you can find the real highlights of town. Well, not the many highlights other than the book store.

Last day in town with my son, this is a good find. The place is friendly, clean and has a great selection to choose from. The breakfast menu is what we picked from, I had the eggs Benedict, my son got stuffed hash browns, Both very good. Price is reasonable and the service is great.

After 5 days of cruise buffet breakfast and a drink they claim is coffee I was ready for real food and coffee. There were a lot of locals on our visit. Service was good, servings were large, and the atmosphere was your typical diner.

It was the only place open for breakfast when I visited in February. The food wasn't bad and the portions were large. Pricing was a little high. Overall 3 out of 5. Would recommend. Definitely get the reindeer sausage. Take that Alaska wildlife!

The more I come here the more I wonder why I keep going back. I'm not one to normally bad mouth, the service is okay depending on who's there. The servers are friendly, but a lot of times I end up getting up to get my own condiments etc. The desserts get left in the case for WAY too long, which makes me wonder what's going on in the kitchen. The food is mediocre if you're in nursing a hangover but other than that, I probably wouldn't take my out-of-town friends or family there. I've been in there when they locked both the front doors (which can ONLY be locked and unlocked with a key on both sides) with customers still inside because they didn't want to serve anyone else.. Huge fire hazard! I'm not sure if they've halted this practice or not. I feel generous giving them 2 stars.

3rd reviews a charm...for Ketchikan. If you're ever in K-town, these are must trys: 1) Pioneer Pantry/Cafe, 2) Ocean View (the beef fajitas!) and 3) Burger Queen The Pioneer Pantry/Cafe used to be on the front street in Ketchikan facing the water but it was a smaller place and this place is always hoppin' with not only tourists but all the locals so they moved to a larger location around the corner. It's an typical old diner type and the old ladies that work have been there since the beginning of time. They are friendly (semi) but straight to the point with the occasional grouchiness. But hey, this only adds to the character of the place. Since it's a diner, they have all the regular stuff: breakfast, burgers/fries, shakes, pies, etc. If you're a local, or a regular visitor (ME), and you go to Pioneer Pantry, you definitely go for the breakfast and a slice of pie...ANY time of the day. Huge and filling breakfasts and homemade pies. Not to mention the old ladies with tons of character and stories...just don't catch 'em on a bad day or annoy them. Ha. Oh and they are open super early and super late. I think when I visited the first couple times they were open 24 hours...but hey, those little ladies need some rest! Anyway, awesome place to check out if you stop by the little town of Ketchikan, AK.

Pioneer Cafe always seemed to have a steady crowd of people on and off the peak hours, so I thought this may not be a bad choice. The food was mediocre and the service was slow around the lunch hour. My Cambridge burger had swiss cheese, fried onions, and mushrooms and was edible but not even close to the greatest burger I ever had. The bun was not very special and the fries had the harder outside shell with a gooey center that I enjoy in fast food fries. I would have paid half of what I did to be moderately satisfied. My lesson is not order burgers in Alaska so next time it will be a halibut entree.

Just the right spot for breakfast for us. Good coffee, pancakes, hash browns. Had the reindeer sausage. Enjoyed that quite a bit. Good service.

You know, being born and raised in a small town has its benefits and of course, the downfalls. Pro: Knowing everyone Con:Knowing everyone Con: Very limited choice of dining facilities Pro: Most are pretty good, plus you know the cooks (refer to pro/con #1) So on so forth, so when I write about a restaurant from my home town, take with a grain of salt. (hardy har) ANYWAYS, the pioneer pantry, (actually it's the pioneer cafe nowadays) is commonly referred to as the "P.P" Pretty much it's where you go to either A: Sober up B: Get the chicken fried steak. Or C: Watch the fire department cackle loudly and drink multiple thermos' of coffee over on there weekly visit where they take up 2+ booths. But it's okay, they "put out" the fires anyways, right? Yeah, right..... The service isn't to fantastic, the single server there is usually someone you know really well and like, or hate. If it's the second option, the service sucks. She (yes usually a she) will sit at the counter top, and take long drags on a cancer stick rather than take your order. HOWEVER, once you get your food, you should be fairly satisfied. It's pretty prompt, occasionally right and normally cooked thoroughly. Luckily for me, the cook was renting an apartment from my dad so my food was always safe to eat. Basically, it's supposed to portray a sort of "mom and pops" type restaurant (even down to the "route 66" decor, and the red booths with black/white checkered tiled floored) but the food isn't up to par with some other small, family owned business'. Coffee is fantastic though.
