A lot of mixed reviews here: people either loved or hated their experience. Luckily, The Homestead turned out to be one of my favorite meals in Homer. I sat alone at the bar, and talked to the bartender/owner at length. Very friendly staff. Wonderful wine selection, good dinner (halibut with mushrooms), and amazing lemon-blueberry dessert. Yes, the decor is outdated. It could definitely be spruced up a bit. They are off the beaten path from Homer, and they could probably benefit from some marketing to let people know where they are, since nearby construction keeps people away. It's worth the drive, especially if you want to get away from the tourist spots in Homer.

This is the finest restaurant in Homer by far. White table cloths, large wine list (Europe and N. America), surf'n'turf, and more. I get more excited about appetizers than main courses usually, and Homestead has a great variety of my favorites: calamari, Kachemak Bay oysters on the half-shell, lamb lollipops and mussels in a spicy tomato broth. Speaking of broths, the sauces, reductions, and broths are really what separate restaurants in the fine dining category. The selection of ingredients and careful preparation of the food is what I crave when I'm dropping money on a nice restaurant. If I'm ever in the area again, this is the first place I'm eating. Also, the service was excellent with down-home character.

Wife and I have been spending summers in Homer for about the last 15 years' except for a few misses. The Homestead has been out first choice for special dining unless we want to try a new place. This still remains our first choice.

Delicious prime rib! A little more rare than medium rare I thought. The shaker margarita was spot on! *Requested Hornitos tequila

I have lived in Alaska off and on for the last decade, and have dined all over the state - anywhere from Nome to Bethel to Fairbanks to Juneau to Anchorage to Homer and more. I have also lived in DC/NYC/SEA and elsewhere. The Homestead Restaurant ranks at the very top of the list, without question. It is arguably better than anywhere else in the Kenai Peninsula, and probably even Anchorage. The view is incredible. There are not many places (even in Alaska) where you can afford such a vista, including fireweed, mountains, and glaciers. The elevation provides a ridgeline where bald eagles can be seen coasting about, which is already a Homer staple. The food is incredible. There are only a handful of farm-to-table restaurants in the entire state, and if there is anything true about Alaska, it is that it's a place of rugged self-sufficiency. This place emanates everything that is right about the Far North lifestyle. The salmon was superb, cooked perfectly, and the vegetables forced me to stop and consider why I had not been here before. I am not a frequent Yelper, but this place deserves far more praise than it gets. You can go down to the Spit and get the tourist surcharge on your food or you can go here and be part of the direct line of involvement in the food ecosystem. This restaurant is the real deal, and it is certainly the favorite place to dine for Homer locals, having asked several friends who live here where to go and they all mentioned here. The same commercial fishermen who caught the salmon and halibut also prefer this place - I know this because I am a former one myself. My compliments to the chef.

Really disappointed. Presentation was good, but the fresh fish was cooked to death! Certainly not what I would expected at this price point. Loved the view!

Fantastic Black Cod! Never had any thing like this. Recommended for fish lovers. Owner very nice and service fantastic. Wine flowing constantly no waiting for any thing long. Consistently serving 19 people and service was just perfect. Impressed with the restaurant. Definitely going there again before living Alaska.

We made reservations for 7 on a saturday night at 6:30. They sat us at a table for 6 and added a chair on the end. Many got the prime rib, one got the fish and two mac and cheeses. The prime ribs and fish had smoke flavor on everything even the potato. Food was good, service was totally disappointing. We waited over an hour for our food and when asked if our child could get her food instead of waiting was told no. After we ate, I had to go and find the waitress to get our check. Waiting over an hour for our food and having cold bread to munch on isn't my idea of a good time. Wife and I had several wonderful meals there previous years, but not going back.

From the beginning: the guy taking reservations over the phone was nice. We got there and realized that while trying to be fine dining, the place is very outdated... even for Alaska. Old carpet, old furniture, old wall hangings, and lace covered half the windows (blocking the gorgeous view). Just when we began to wonder if we had a waitress, she finally came. We ordered shrimp arancini for an appetizer and a glass of wine. The only person paying our table any attention was the woman refilling water. We were given cold bread with butter packets while we waited. The app came ten minutes after we were ready to order our mains and the wine had been forgotten. We got no new plates and ate the appetizer off the bread plates. There was an aioli on the plate but none over the food and not nearly enough. We ordered the halibut special and salmon special. They were around $30 a piece for market price. Both those tasted good but it took forever to get it ordered. Then, we asked to see a dessert menu but ten minutes later when we were finally asked what we wanted we just wanted to leave. Based on the reviews and them being the only restaurant in town with a website I had high hopes, but I would not return.

The food was devine....we had the scallops were grill to perfection, the Red Salmon was rare and just wonderful.....The King Crab was sweet and tender...The Ultimate salad was good but the amount of dressing was overkill for the size of salad... The only detractions from a food stand point was the coffee.....weak and bland... From a service stand point,I called to get there address to plug into my GPS and the bartender guy did not know it and told me my "Newfangeled gizmo" wont work ....never answering my question directly, impling they did not have one even though they are directly across the street from the post office....I don't know if he was being coy or just ignorant but the"gizmo' worked in the rest of the state....

The food was good, but we were a bit disappointed about the size of one of our plates. Even though the halibut special tasted delicious, the fish fillet was tiny! This was the second restaurant in Homer where we were served an appetizer size of a fish fillet... quite surprising since the city of Homer is referred to as the Halibut capital of the world. It was even more disappointing receiving such a small dish after seeing the same plate being served to another guest on our way to be seated; that guest's Halibut fillet was at least double the size of ours. Did they run out of the Halibut fillet and served us a half portion? Or was this the non-local-portion-size? Not sure, but for the price it was not worth it (even though the taste was great). The seafood pasta tasted good, and the size was decent. While the plate size of one of our dishes was on the small side, the wine glasses came filled pretty well. What disappointed us was that we went there thinking it was a seafood restaurant, instead it is more of a steak house. Not the restaurant's fault (we were sent there by our host after asking for a good seafood restaurant), but somehow we expected a lot more seafood dishes to choose from. The special was the only real seafood plate. Atmosphere was ok. You can tell that the owners try to make the place look fancy with white table cloth and all, but it does not reflect the upscale, classy atmosphere of a real steak house (nor was that to be expected in a small city like Homer). Service was good, waitress and restaurant manager were very friendly, waitress was knowledgeable about the food and wines. View would be nice, although it is outside of town and not right on the water. Unfortunately, once inside, the windows don't leave you much of a view.

The best meal we had in Alaska worth every penny. It seems like all entrees in Alaska fluctuate between $14 - $32 w/ just the quality changing. This place is on the higher but can be considered a true gourmet restaurant w/ good size portions.

Food isn't as good as the other reviews indicated. Food was very disappointing and way overpriced. Save your time and money! I suspect that most of the positive reviews were given by their own employees..

First the good stuff...the weekend prime rib special we each ordered on Sunday evening was tender, juicy, flavorful, with a nicely seasoned crust. The waitress was great. The Pavlova for dessert (we shared it) was delectable. Now, back to the beef: we each requested medium rare. It was well done...but we were hungry, it was late and chose not to make an issue of it. If they didn't have any truly medium rare, they should have fessed up and told us so, we might have ordered something else. No telling. Ambience, white tablecloths...with white butcher paper over them. Sort of diminishes the effect, I think. Anyway, in a tiny town like Homer, it wasn't bad, but comes up short just a bit.

We were visiting Homer, and I was wanting an excuse to head out East a bit, so my husband and I decided on celebrating our anniversary at the Homestead. The setting is nice -- a fairly good view even from the 2-person tables on the opposite side of the room from the view, white table cloths, etc. The wait staff wasn't professional in the same way a similar restaurant would have been in the lower 48, but it's Homer (and really, not even Homer), so it was fine. My husband had a seafood pasta dish that he really enjoyed, we shared a glass of house wine (pretty good, for house wine), and I had a not-impressive salmon special (the salmon was dry, which surprised me for a nice restaurant surrounded by fresh salmon) and it came doused in a creamy dill sauce. The sauce was good, but there was about 10 times more than the "right" amount. I could not get a bite of anything on my plate that wasn't mostly covered in the sauce. There were a few older children there while we were there, and they did fine, but it wouldn't be a good restaurant for small children.

The best prime rib I've ever had. Deserts were spectacular. The only thing that bothered me was the placement of the prime rib on top of the mashed potatoes. Why do you do this? It ruins the taters and makes for a messy plate! Aside from that you have my taste buds' highest rating.

This is a great restaurant for a date night or anniversary. It's pricey and not intended to be a family restaurant. the food is delicious and the service is great. It's a little out of the way, and you'll probably think you've driven too far before you get there, but it's worth it if you're looking for a nice steak dinner.
