Friendly staff and good food. Only giving it four stars because they were playing explicit music while we were eating. Not sure if that is an everyday occurrence or not. Besides that it was a great experience. Got the cinnamon swirl sourdough French toast with reindeer sausage. Was delicious and would go back for sure!

Organic, seasonal ingredients, interesting specials, and attentive service. Great for brunch and to-go baked goods.

This place is awesome. Really good breakfast I had the grilled salmon benidect and I couldnt even finish it because I was so full. Everything is fresh here too.

Fresh Sourdough Express, how do I love thee. Let me count the ways!!! 1. Your many organic offerings. 2. I can eat here and not worry about what's in my food. 3. Your locally-sourced ingredients, whenever possible. 4. Your specials. 5. Your hospitality. 6. The fresh juices you serve! 7. Your bakery is FABULOUS. 8. The ambiance is warm and inviting. 9. The regular live music. 10. The original owners! 11. I could go on and on and on..... Bottom line: When I'm in Homer, I attempt to eat every single meal there. I wish there were more restaurants like this one. It's that special.

I had a fantastic breakfast here this morning. Service was prompt, attentive and very friendly. The coffee was fresh & hot. My pancakes** with wild berries could not have been more delicious. I will definitely be returning to try other items on the menu! Thank you Fresh Sourdough Express for serving breakfast all day. (**I ordered a short stack of "Howling Hotcakes".) I especially appreciated the fact that when I told my waitress my car was being serviced nearby, she replied that I was welcome to stay as long as I wanted (she did not rush me out of my comfortable booth). I did stay a bit longer than I ordinarily would have, and she kept my water & coffee filled the entire time.

Another delightful breakfast. I love stopping by whenever I'm in Homer. The organic cinnamon swirl French toast was delicious and the reindeer sausage added a very nice touch.

Wonderful discovery in Homer! Had great breakfast of eggs, sourdough pancakes and reindeer sausage. Would go again for tomorrow's breakfast before we leave town but they will be closed.

We had planned to go to Two Sisters during our one morning in Homer, but luckily for us it was closed early in the morning so we ended up at Fresh Sourdough Express and how happy were were that we did! Breakfast was absolutely fantastic - local fresh ingredients in delicious dishes with endless choices of pastries and excellent coffee. Service was friendly and fast. I wish that I could start my day off here every morning.

One of our to-do items in Alaska was to try sourdough pancakes and reindeer sausage, and we are so glad we did so at Sourdough Express. We stopped in for breakfast around 8am on a Tuesday as we were heading out of Homer. When we pulled up we saw a tour bus and figured it'd be a super long wait to both be seated and to eat - but we were wrong on both counts. We sat immediately at a counter looking out the window. We ordered a stack of sourdough pancakes with a side of reindeer sausage, a latte and a cappuccino. It was brought out pretty quickly by Alaska standards, maybe 15 minutes after we ordered, even though the entire restaurant was filled with the tour bus crowd. It came with three large pancakes and a butterflied sausage link, which was more than enough for the two of us to share (and my boyfriend is 6ft 6 inches and known to sometimes order two entrees). Neither of us are big on sweet breakfast foods and this totally hit the spot. I'd never had sourdough pancakes before and will find it hard to ever eat a regular pancake again. They weren't sweet at all but pleasantly sour and savory, which was well balanced with a light dousing of maple syrup. The real star of the meal was the reindeer sausage which I will dream about forevermore. It was super crispy and on first taste was deliciously gamey in a positive way (think: this morning a hunter went into the crisp morning wooded air and shot a reindeer [which is sad, yes] and the stuffed it into a sausage and put it on your plate). Upon chewing, it had a completely unique spicy flavor (spices, not hot spicy). I asked the waitress about it and she said it is custom made for Sourdough Express. Bummer I can't buy a case of it. Both the latte and cappuccino were good and what you would expect. We were in and out in about 45 minutes, yet both the owner and waitress thanked us for our patience. I would have waited a lot longer for this breakfast, and have done so for far less delicious meals in Alaska. One note, we saw signs inside saying the restaurant is for sale after 33 years . So, be sure to find out if it is still under the same ownership before hitting it up because it may not be the same in the future. Lastly, Sourdough Express has a rather large collection of local art and books on sale, which I thought was really cool and made for a fun way to pass the time while waiting for food.

Great food and local if possible. Make a reservation, they get busy quick. What holds them from 5 stars is that they do everything good/great but nothing amazing. They are a solid home restaurant and experience. I hope the new owner they find keeps it or builds on this place.

Fantastic service. Great food. Perfect atmosphere. We loved it. Kid friendly. Stroller accommodating.

This is my favorite place to eat in Homer! Every meal is divine. All of the ingredients are locally grown/caught/raised and organic. It's run by a great family and often employs young locals who are friendly and happy. My favorite dish is the salad with seared halibut on top and the raspberry dressing.

Lots of people recommended this place so we thought we'd check it out for breakfast on a Sunday day morning. We arrived before 9:30 and were able to be seated almost immediately. Upon entering there's a beautiful and mouth watering display of sweets. The place was pretty active and lively. The service was pretty friendly and this entire place appeared to be very family - oriented. The big hype here is that all their food is organic. While I admire this, I can't taste the difference (maybe my taste buds aren't so sophisticated). I ordered the "Down home breakfast". I wanted my breakfast to have hard - boiled eggs (menu suggests the eggs can be made your way) but the waiter insisted that it takes too long to make and their kitchen is too busy. As much as I wanted that I can tell it wasn't going to happen so I settled for poached eggs. By the time we got our food it would have been ample time to boil an egg. I was not too impressed with the food. It appeared greasy and I honestly felt that my local IHOP could deliver the same, if not better quality for half the price. The portion was abundant but I felt my food was on the greasy side and wasn't too flavorful. The reindeer sausage was probably my favorite part of the entire meal. On a side note, the waiter kept telling us to remind of things we asked for or wanted, and I thought to myself that's not why I'm here. I go to a restaurant to be stress-free and enjoy my experience, I don't go to a restaurant to repeat my order or remind others of it..that's what paper is for. We tried their cinnamon roll and we were very pleased with it. Overall I doubt I'll be able to drive all the way down here again and I would like to try other places.

This was our go to place for breakfast /lunch in homer for couple of days. Yummy and fresh food made from organic local ingredients . Our favorite : 1. Scramble Salmon omelette ( they replace potatoes by garlic vegetables on request :) ) 2. Garden omelette 3. Blueberry poppy seed muffin & carrot cake 4. Juice - kale, carrot n cerely Prices are bit on expensive side but for the beautiful ambiance , good service and DELICIOUS food. Worth it!

Best food I have ever eaten in my entire life! Love the gluten free options and organic everything

Nice. I particularly liked reading the creation story of this restaurant, which involved a young hippie couple driving around in 1973 and deciding to stay in Homer and make organic-70s-hippie-breakfasts for a living. The original van is out of commission but is still out front on the grounds of the restaurant. Open 6 days. Which day are they closed? Thursday. WTF? Anyway, we went back on Friday and were able to get ourselves a decent breakfast before leaving town. Large portions. I got a big potatoes-and-vegetables dish. It was okay--the vegetables were really unspectacular. A nice selection of baked goods--we picked up a cinnamon roll for the road and it was sweet and delicious without being grossly sugary like cinnamon rolls tend to be. Despite the hippie vibe, I was stared down by some of the most menacing looking locals I saw anywhere in Alaska during this meal. Kind of unsettling, but I guess that could happen anywhere. Maybe they could read my mind. . .they knew I was thinking bad thoughts about their town and wanted to get home.

We love this place, it's good southern style food!
(5)Jonathan C.
The seafood chowder was great. Sandwich was good too, though I don't remember what I had! I would go back.
(4)Amy E.
This restaurant uses a lot of organic ingredients, which makes me feel better about the food I'm eating. The quality of the food itself is excellent, especially their breakfasts. Occasionally they offer all-you-can-eat king crab, which is pricey, but worth it if you eat more than about a pound and a half. The only downside is that, like many restaurants in Homer, the food takes a while to come out. So expect to be here well over an hour, even if they don't seem very busy (which is rare). I do wish they were open year round.
(4)Anna H.
GREAT FOOD! Okay service. If the wait staff had been a little nicer, more positive, it would be a 5 STAR! Very unfortunate for such a great restaurant to have a "Debbie Downer" wait on you. Loved the food so much we ate here 4 times within a 5 day span of our stay in Homer, AK. Love the Halibut Sandwich! They serve it with homemade Mustard Tartar Sauce, which I'm not a fan of mustard, but I enjoyed the sandwich with the sauce. With the bread, it compliments the fish and isn't very strong, I was surprised that I liked it! Love the daily crisp! Love the organic and healthy food options. ENJOY!! When in Homer - dine here!

After a full day of driving (from Anchorage), we pulled in to "Sourdough" at about 7pm. About half-filled with some families and a couple of couples, we sat down and ordered a beer. Then, we met Donna (the owner) and her husband/partner Kevin walked by. Loved the Bella Dona salad with Halibut. Donna also made up a full-on veggie plate for Jodi with some great produce straight from the farmer's market that morning! The restaurant is very "green," not just on the menu, but in the way they go about their business...Low impact, small footprint, sustained joy!

If I could give negative stars I would. The waitress was rude. We ordered biscuits and gravy to split. I ordered an egg separately. The egg came out on top of the biscuits and gravy. So basically they put our separate orders together on one plate. That's easily fixable by moving the egg. However the egg white was running and ran all over the biscuits and gravy. If I wanted egg covered biscuits and gravy I would have ordered it that way. When I said oh I didn't want the egg on top the rude waitress said "that's just how they do things here." Excuse me you typically put two peoples orders together? I ordered the egg separately. The biscuits and gravy were not edible. The egg was disgusting as well. The waitress never came to ask how it was. We got up and went to the register, where most people would say, how was your food? This waitress was just rude with an awful attitude and charged us for the meal. Which again was not edible. Don't waste your time going to this place. Stay far away. As an owner I would be ashamed of this employee and either terminate her or give her a lesson in customer service. AGAIN STAY AWAY FROM THIS HORRIBLE PLACE.

We went on Father's Day morning around 9am and were seated right away. The food was great and I noticed lots of options for people with dietary restrictions (organic, gluten free, dairy free). Overall the food options seemed healthy and local. Nice menu for the kids, too. The highlight of the day was the guy playing guitar near the bakery side who was taking requests. We made a request by James Taylor that he didn't know, but he looked it up on his tablet and played and sang an amazing rendition. It was a truly memorable day.
(5)Ashley D.
Looks like they might have good food but I wouldn't know for sure considering they wouldn't let us choose from 70% of the menu. We came in and sat down, got ignored for a good bit by our server who was chatting with the table in front of us (her family) Finally a second server came along and asked what we would like. My girlfriend ordered and the guy informed us, "oh no one told you? We are only serving breakfast and burgers today." Uh what? There was no sign anywhere, they gave us a full menu and no one said anything. Really shabby and randomly annoying service. We were really hungry and already had to wait forever. Probably won't go back
(2)Alicia R.
Everything there is amazing! I know it's not always easy to source local and organic foods but they've done just that without hiking up the cost of food. You definitely get a full meal! and try their fresh jam, probably the best I've ever had.

I stopped for desert after dinner. I had a chocolate and peanut butter shake. It was great. I also bought a pinwheel. It was was a pastry with reindeer sausage, veggies, and cheese. I bought it for my lunch for the next day halibut fishing trip. It was fantastic. It was a great savory snack. When I was waiting for my shake I saw a couple at a table with a large plate of king crab. It looked so good I wanted to invite myself to their table. I will visit them again next year's fishing trip.

Organic Yummyness. I love when I can eat out and it not only tastes good but feels good too. The place is clean! oh how i love clean places. And nice easy location - not too far from airport, before you get to the busyness of the SPIT. Good breakfast menu with all the usual stuff - just grown and prepared in a much healthier way. Lunch starts at 11. Good selection of soup, salads, sandwiches. (And other stuff - my friend went crazy for the burrito) Oh - and organic smoothie and juice bars! Outdoor eating area with big sandbox for kids. Service just the way I like it - friendly, attentive, willing to help with special requests, but not hovering or pushing you out the door as you take your last bite.
(5)Manuela K.
The service was really friendly. We lucked out because we got the last table inside since a tour bus was coming in and most of the restaurant was reserved. I appreciate their fresh, local, and organic ingredients. We came for breakfast and I ordered Fisherman's Biscuit and Sausage Gravy. It was really good! I also ordered to go spinach and salmon pastry and that was pretty good as well. I would've loved to try more from there.
(4)Christy A.
Each time I visit, I'm glad I did. Great selection of food items. Can accommodate gluten-free requests (but remember it's a bakery). If you eat dairy, the shakes look amazing.
(5)Kayla D.
As many traveling through Homer for fishing, a hearty breakfast was just what we wanted. We were told about this place by someone who sat by us on our flight into Anchorage. The service and atmosphere was great! We're from Chicago and I would choose this over many of our brunch places in the city. The sticky bun was so good and all the breakfast food at our table was wonderful. Highly recommend it!
(5)Ryan K.
Great service and incredible food. Highly recommend the salmon scramble. Many gluten free options and had local and organic ingredients. If you're looking for a good local and healthy breakfast with a smile...this is your place.

The best place to eat in homer! Not only is the food creative, fresh and healthy, the staff are nice too. One early morning we asked for lunch boxes to take on our bear viewing excursion, and even though they take orders the day before, were more than accommodating. We got our lunch boxes and what a treat they were. Super good food & people.

I only wish we were lucky enough to have this place in Anchorage; this was seriously my favorite part about Homer. We stopped here for breakfast one morning, drawn in by all the rave reviews here on Yelp about their fresh, local, organic ingredients. We loved it so much, we came back later that day and got lunch to go and some pastries for breakfast the next morning! I had the cinnamon swirl French toast and I was blown away. I don't even like French toast, but couldn't resist the appeal of the cinnamon swirl, and oh my word was it gooooood! I didn't even use the accompanying syrup or butter, it was perfect all on its own. I also got a glass of their organic chocolate milk which was a perfect accompaniment. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy, which were just as delectable. Fresh biscuits, creamy gravy full of flavor. It was such a completely satisfying meal! For lunch we got the smoked brisket sandwich and the Ruben with housemate sauerkraut, on fresh baked whole wheat bread...equally delicious as breakfast! We also grabbed some peanut butter cookies for lunch and they were perfectly golden and soft, just as a cookie should be! For breakfast the next day I grabbed the chocolate cinnamon sticky bun and my husband had the pecan sticky bun, both were absolutely superb. Such a treat! This place has it all down...quality meals, quality ingredients, top notch service. We were recognized by the staff each time we returned and they treated us like they had known us for years. This is a true gem in Homer, a place not to be missed!

Friendly staff, fast service, excellent food from local sources when possible. Highly recommend!

Having lived in Homer for almost two years now, I had only eaten at Sourdough once before, I believe under previous owners. It was good, but nothing special. After seeing that they are now open year round and have better hours, I figured management must have changed and figured I would check it out. I'm glad I did. From the get go I had a great experience. The staff graciously greeted me as soon as I walked in the door and got me a delicious cup of coffee. Once I figured out my order, the waitress recommended having the special (which was almost the same as what I wanted) to save some money, which I certainly appreciated. I ended up getting a delicious scramble with a more than healthy portion of crisp, fresh vegetables scrambled with some of the best reindeer sausage I've ever had and an equally large serving of phenomenal peppercorned potatoes. Topping it off was two huge, delicious slices of whole-wheat sourdough and some great raspberry jam. Though not busy, the staff interacted just the right amount, not preying over me nor forgetting about me. It was certainly one of the more enjoyable breakfasts I've had in Homer and I'll certainly be coming back a few times before the end of the summer.

A couple of fisherman (tourist type) driving around looking for breakfast; drove by this place and thought 'dang, they're busy! And I'll bet it's mostly locals'. Boom. Glad we stopped! Had the 'Sourdough Jack' skillet with Reindeer sausage- awesome. The home-style spuds were cooked and seasoned PERFECT! The toast was a bit dry, but they give you a nice little side dish of berry preserves to moisten it up, and easily enough for all slices of toast. Good coffee, not your standard restaurant fare (you know what I'm talking about). Last but certainly not least the service was GREAT, and everyone we came in contact with was friendly. They have a cute little bakery but we were too full to look at it. It was so good we actually went a 2nd time (for breakfast), the pancakes were so-so...a little chewy and not much flavor, but everything else including the service was as good as the first time, A+. Next time we're in Homer we're definitely coming back for lunch or dinner....

They are closed for the season. I wanted stop here so badly! They won't let me post this review until I add something more :-/

Gluten-free, vegan gingersnap cookie!!!!! YUMMMMYYYY!!!!!!!
(4)Cindy B.
YUM! We picked this place on whim during a get-out-of-town weekend that found us in Homer. I was pleasantly surprised that they offer your choice of sourdoughs along with quite a few gluten-free items. Breakfast was really good - our his-and-hers Sourdough Jane and Joe plates were hot, delicious, and on the table quickly, the coffee was smooth and plentiful, and the dinner menu had us wishing we had another 8 hours to spend down on the peninsula.
(5)Doug C.
Loved it. Fresh, fast, wholesome breakfast in a friendly laid back local insider favorite. Highly recommend.
(5)Alex M.
What a great breakfast option. All the food is organic and largely locally grown. The portions are ample and delicious. The service is quick and friendly. You won't regret dining here. The reindeer sausage, pancakes, and salmon scrambled eggs are wonderful.
(5)Jamie M.
Good baked goods and coffee. Friendly service
(4)Ryan R.
Great organic and healthy food. Everything from sandwiches, burgers, dinners, seafood, and pastries...and much more. We had the King Crab Pot, Salmon Dinner, and the Mt. Augustine nachos....and all very great!!!! These people also run the A Memorable Experience Bed & Breakfast, and it rounds out the overall Homer experience.
(5)Benjamin H.
One of the best places to eat in Homer, especially for breakfast. Just really really good pancakes. The wait staff are always super attentive and friendly. I could do without the tie-dye everywhere, but where else can you get Alaska Birch syrup as an option on your hotcakes. Amber always gets the french toast with fresh picked raspberry compote. Alaskan potatoes. Scrambles have feta and Parmesan. Delicious.
(4)RA F.
Our server was not friendly and seemed more interested in the locals in the restaurant. We planned to eat breakfast but were informed they were no longer serving any breakfast items when we were seated. We ordered salad and clam chowder off the lunch menu. We have eaten clam chowder all over the US and this was the worst we've ever eaten. The garlic salad dressing was over powering. Either we hit an off day, or we ordered the wrong thing, but we can't recommend our meal.
