Among traditional Japanese atmosphere you will find a friendly staff with experience from San Francisco. Traveling from Sacramento with an desire to find fresh Alaskan fish, I finally met my match. I ordered the Lunch Special C, which comes with a Miso soup, crunchy salad, five pieces of Nigiri, and a Spicy Salmon roll. The star of the dish was the rainbow assortment of Nigiri sushi which was fresh, well portioned, and on point. It's what sushi lovers dream of. The Spicy Salmon rolls were stuffed full of fresh salmon with a crunch of cucumber. Would have liked a light orange mayo sauce to balance out the spices. The special was well worth the $15.95.

It might be the fact that we're from California (where Sushi joints are just as bountiful as your local McD's), but we were told not to expect much from the food in Alaska--that being said, my husband and I would dare to say that this was as good, if not better than any of the Sushi bars we have ever been to. The prices were reasonable, but the staff and food were what really made the experience. Our waitress was extremely nice and had a smile that lit up the room. Sifu Sam is an excellent craftsman and artisan when it comes to his work! The only thing I would have to say is if they ask you if you like it spicy, they aren't joking. YOU BETTER REALLY LIKE SPICY FOOD. I love spicy food, wasabi and srirachi, but some of the spicier rolls will clear your sinuses! Aside from that though, this is an excellent sushi bar and I don't say that lightly. We will be back here!

I am from California up for a visit and some people suggested this place. Overall it was good but nothing amazing. The lunch specials are a good price and taste really good. Personally I got the "No Name" roll and it came really heavy with "Screaming O" sauce. It was really sweet and I couldn't really taste the fish. Saying this the Nigiri was fresh and came with some really big slices of fish, a big win in my book. Heads up though there spicy is not as spicy as people say.

Eh... Wife had chicken teriyaki. I had beef short ribs. Each came with salad, soup, white rice. Salad was kind of old iceberg lettuce with a little miso dressing. Soup tasted like canned chicken broth with a little miso. Ribs were sliced thin across the grain, pan fried, doused with teriyaki sauce. A little chewy. There's a reason short ribs a usually braised, not fried. Teriyaki chicken was typical. Everything lacked flavor. Maybe because everything (particularly the rice) needed salt -- and I'm usually a low salt guy. Nothing terrible, nothing very good. So three stars.

I really enjoy coming to this place on a Friday night and grabbing some sushi for dinner. It's never too busy and you generally get your food in a timely manner. I haven't had sushi I was not satisfied with, and dine in portions are generally larger than take out. Its decently priced and service is about average. Don't let the exterior fool you, it's fairly clean and nicely decorated. The specials don't seem to change much, they are usually the same every the ice been in. Having a more lively feel inside might make this a more welcoming place.

We are here on a tour and were searching for sushi restaurant . Thanks to Yelp we found this. We ordered Denali sashimi (22 pieces) crunchy munchy rolls, grilled mackerel , agedashi tofu and grilled hamachi collar. All was good and fresh . We enjoyed everything we ordered . Highly recommend this sushi place!

Short Story: A good place for sushi if you're a local... Long Story: I'll first say that I'm from San Francisco where sushi restaurants are a plenty and the quality is excellent. Having said that, it may be unfair to compare the two...therefore in comparing this sushi restaurant to other restaurants in general in Fairbanks, I'd say this place is good. The prices are good and the portions on some rolls are generous. The service can be lacking at times since they appear to be understaffed. Also, when we went they were out of many items...which is a huge disappointment. The decor and ambiance are average of surrounding places and could even pass for SF...all in all not bad. Verdict: Having been spoiled by phenomenal sushi in SF I probably won't be back the next time I'm in Fairbanks.

Came here for dinner. Decent sushi, and decent portions of meat on the sushi. The fish was fresh tasting and good quality. They are understaffed and therefore the service is a little slow. Waitstaff is very nice and seems to recognize that they will be slow and apologize for it. The place inside could use a fresh-up for sure. The bathrooms are a little rank looking but seem sanitary. BTW, if you sit near the door in the Winter it is VERY cold when people come in and out of the restaurant.

This place is not in the best location, but it was a very rainy day when we came so that was my perspective. The food was pretty good and good size. The place was nice and the server was not friendly at all! It seemed like she was staring us down the whole time, but I guess that's just her face and she seemed impatient. The food came out in about 15 min and we got small salads and miso soup with our meal. I'm not too familiar with Fairbanks, but I'll try many other spots before I come back here.

Average sushi that is over priced. I had way cheaper and better Japanese food in Santa Barbara, which is not known for good Japanese restaurants. Don't even try to compare with LA and SF. Weird location and we were literally the only ppl in here on a sat night. That should saying something.

One of the better sushi restaurant in Fairbanks. My husband and I have visited most of them in tow, and the services are always friendly and prompt. The outside isn't much to rave about nor the area but you will not be disappointed. The sushies are delicious and great favors. We always had a positive experience every time we gone there.

For the size and location of Fairbanks, I would consider this sushi place to be pretty top notch quality. The service was good, the portions were generous, and the food tasty. The best roll was the Orgasm roll. The sashimi you could tell was probably frozen at some point, but still delicious with a generous cut. Veggie tempura was also crispy and had a good tasting batter.

We just left this place and we were quite satisfied. We were originally put off by the location and appearance, but based on other reviews on here (and after peeking inside) we decided to give it a go. Our three kids (ages 5, 21 months and 19 months) were starving and our miso was brought out right away. There was a limited menu for kids, but ours are accustomed to eating Japanese food, so we found the selection to be good. The list of rolls was long and seemed creative, but if you like pictures, you'll be disappointed. Once we ordered, the food was brought out right away (I should hope so since we were the only Wednesday night diners) and the hostess/waitress even brought us an extra plate for the youngest without us asking. Their plates and cups for the kids were fantastic. But there is no changing table and only one high chair. I had the Hawaiian Roll (which is my go-to when I can't take the time I want to read a menu) and it was okay; fresh fish, hot crispy tempura, but a too-sweet sauce for my liking. My friend ordered Dake which is California roll, crispy California roll, and six nigiri pieces of the chef's choice. There was nothing special about the chef's choice (snapper, salmon, tuna, etc) and you could tell they were frozen/thawed. The rice was meh. But I usually rate a Japanese restaurant on their miso soup and ocean salad and both were excellent at Wasabi Bay. Ironically, the wasabi wasn't very spicy. We would go back for the miso and tempura for sure, and I might try udon or a dinner entree next time instead of a roll.

Not bad sushi, a big pricier than what I'm used to, but it's expected I guess in Fairbanks, due to the location. Restaurant seems a bit deceiving, it can be hard to find and it looks like its located in a deserted little stripe mall, but once inside the restaurant, it's pretty nice. Friendly staff. We were here on a Monday evening before closing (places in Alaska close so freakin early!) I ordered a speciality roll and a albacore sushi. Both were pretty tasty and fresh. Nothing spectacular. After we were done, we the parking lot was pitch black, a bit scary. Interesting location..

Our favorite place to get sushi in Fairbanks. I already miss this place. We went at least once a week on date night or as a group with friends. I often saw large groups of people there as well. Great sushi, vegetarian options and the staff is always friendly. Check out other veg friendly restaurants on my page here amandasamigos.com/can-ve… My husband recommends the white dragon and super 007 for sushi. I really liked the vegetable yakisoba, seaweed salad, tofu, and they will even make a vegetarian sushi if you request it. I'd go back, if I could!

Great little sushi joint on the side of a strange store off of Cushman. Came here with a co-worker and was sad that I hadn't been to this joint for as many times as I've been in town for work. It was even near the meh Sweet Basil, and I went there twice at a loss of where to go. I ordered the Yellow Dragon, and co-worker ordered the Screaming O and a calamari starter. He also ordered a bento lunch to go. He seems pretty well known there, so much so that he got all his food first, even the to-go bento. Kinda weird, but I'm not going to judge as he is a well known/ high paying customer. The yellow roll was basically a regular dragon roll with tempura flakes and unagi sauce all over it. Tasty and filling. Rolls came with miso starter soup, which was a pleasantly salty starter. Will come again and maybe try that "O".

The staff was very friendly. Greeting us immediately. The service was very fast, surprising for Fairbanks sad to say. The food was amazingly delicious!! We ordered the Caterpillar Roll and the Cherry Blossom roll. The food was so good that we ended up ordering another roll, the Dragon Roll. We will most defiantly be back to here again!!!

Looks shady from the outside but it was delicious and the service was great!! We even had left overs. If I had to pick one thing I didn't like it was that there were so many choices. :-)

Wasabi Bay is a gem among the coal mine that is S. Cushman in Fairbanks. The food is what you might expect to find in the swank part of some metropolis in a far more politically correct state. The prices are fair, but by no means cheap. Two people with a healthy appetite might pay between $60-$90 dollars if you choose to indulge in a full course experience. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is the service, which is non-existant. Your order will be taken and you will be left alone for the most part. Me? I kind of like it that way. This is a must for seafood and sushi lovers alike. Be adventurous! You just might discover your new favorite dish...I know I did.

Came here for lunch while on vacation. The sushi was a bit pricey (~$12 average for a roll) but I don't know if that might just be the going rate for sushi in Fairbanks. I got tempura udon noodle soup which was very good and more reasonably priced. Friendly staff and the ambiance was very good.

This is by far the BEST sushi place in Fairbanks! I'll get straight to the review and won't ramble on at all! ****Pros:**** 1. Food. Wasabi Bay has AMAZING sushi! And not just amazing sushi but a great variety of sushi for you to choose from. Their list just goes on and on and on! Every roll I've had here has been very fresh and tasty. I grew up in San Diego and have lived all over the Socal area and Wasabi Bay sushi does not disappoint! For those who don't like sushi, that's ok! They have various of rice dishes that would fill you up. My husband love getting their bento boxes with the terriyaki chicken or beef. I also have to say that I love their seaweed salad! All and all, five stars to Wasabi Bay for their amazing food! 2. Customer Service: Great service from Wasabi Bay. The moment I walked in, I was greeted and seated promptly. Server always came back to check in on us and promptly got us anything that we might needed. So A+ on service! 3. Atmosphere: The place is kept really nice and clean. There's always really nice people eating there. When there is a crowd, it can get noisy but not crazy. A good kind of background noise that keeps you energize as you eat. Or when it's not crowded, it's just a relaxing atmosphere where you feel like it's just you and the food. Overall, a great environment to eat good food. SOOOO, if you're ever in the Fairbanks area, I would highly recommend checking this place out! You won't be disappointed!

We went to Wasabi Bay for the first time two nights ago. Clean interior. Attentive waitress. It was pretty empty though. They served a decent miso soup when we were seated at a table. We ordered the gyosa (steamed) for a starter. I think it was the best I've ever had! Very happy with the freshness of them. We ordered the Las Vegas roll and the Lion King roll. The sauce on the Las Vegas roll was delicious. The Lion King was even better, just a tiny bite of spicy and a very nice sauce on there also. They had very interesting specials that I wish I had room for.. a pork cutlet and a beef dish in a stone bowl. So, to sum up, three items between two people made us comfortably full with a few pieces to take home. Price with tip.. $38.85. No drinks, just water. I would recommend and I am going back soon to try more! =) Update: 8/31/14 Still recommend. Added the Kiss Me roll to my fav Lion King roll. The beef yakisoba was very good. Thumbs up!

The garlic tuna sashimi is amazing, and this is the only place in town I'll order a spider roll. I wasn't thrilled with the salmon skin hand roll, or unagi nigiri, but everything else I've had here has been great!

They were out of unagi for the unagi bowl so I had the nabeyaki udon. Toughest seafood I've ever had and the udon was not fresh at all. For $15.95

absolutely amazing!!! we were blown away by their fresh food and friendly environment! They offered us many HUGE samplers. Their fish was among the freshest I have ever had in my life... At the end of the dinner, we were also offered a coupon..too bad we were only there for a short trip..if we lived in Fairbanks, we would go there every day!

Edamame, bowl good for 2-3 peeps. Crunch roll and spider roll The restaurant itself is very unassuming. From the outside you may be deterred, but definitely come inside and you'll be glad you did. The inside is clean, spacious, well decorated and very comfortable. I came alone for lunch (because I have no friends, sad panda). The hostess immediately greeted me and found me a table. I immediately ordered some edamame (because I love that shit!) and started browsing the menu. They have a wide array of rolls as well as bento and different teriyaki. I came for sushi, so that's what I concerned myself with. They have all the classics, as well as a large number of specialty rolls with funny names. I went for my old standby Spider Roll (soft shell crab) and tried the Crunch Roll (which had crab and shrimp if I recall correctly). When I ordered my rolls, the waitress brought my edamame and told me it would be about 15 min on the sushi due to the need to cook the crab. The edamame was good, not too salty, but was unfortunately also not too hot. I prefer it to come out with steam rolling off it, this was warm to lukewarm (as if it had been prepared and left out). All in all it was still good for munching. Next, they brought me some miso soup and three little shumai looking fried chicken chunks. The chunks were cool, which may have been the intent, but I would have preferred them warmer, so I plopped them in my soup. The soup was excellent; hot and delicate. Just as I finished up the rolls came out. Both were fantastic. I tore into them and was very happy with the selection. The crunch roll had a really nice sweet sauce, and each piece was a respectable mouthful. The Spider rolls were a bit thinner (except for the claw pieces which stood like monuments to the gods of sushi). The Spider rolls also had a darker sweet sauce hidden on the bottom of the roll (as if it was placed on the plate and topped with a roll). So if you think they look dry, or missing that familiar sauce, rest assured its under there. The waitress was attentive, very friendly, and despite me having to rush lunch a bit, it was great and I'd definitely return.

Do not judge a book by its cover. Wasabi Bay looks like a hole in wall, shady place. My coworkers and I almost did not walk in. We were pleasantly surprised. The sushi was awesome and tasted fresh. The rolls were large. Prices were reasonable for Alaska. Recommend the "kiss my ass" roll, which had a nice spice to it. The California roll was also great. We actually went there twice and it was not crowded either time. The only reason I gave it four stars and not 5, was because there was a little bit of a smell to the place. They need to clean and redo their bathrooms. The bathrooms are disgusting.

Like so many other places in Fairbanks, appearances can be deceiving. From the outside this place looks out of business, but inside it's pleasant. There is so much sushi to choose from. You'll spend at least 15 minutes reading the menu book. As an added bonus, the sushi roll names are quite comical. You'll even find a roll called the "screaming orgasm" It says it comes with orgasm sauce, but I didn't dare ask what that was!

As a Korean-American, I've been to countless sushi restaurants that have run the spectrum from stellar to absolutely dreadful, and this gem has pretty much conquered that list. The sushi chef ensures the premium quality of the fish and because it is highly frequented, the fish is ALWAYS FRESH! The deep pinks and oranges that I saw in my tuna and salmon sashimi were alluring testaments to their amazing taste. The chirashi sushi, basically various types of sushi mixed with fresh greens, onions, sesame oil, red pepper paste, over rice, was the best I've ever had! I've had this type of dish in Korea, Japan, Los Angeles, DC, NJ, and NYC, yet, it blows my mind that I've found the ultimate rendition in Fairbanks, Alaska! The chef's culinary skills were forged in the competitive fires of Las Vegas and the presentation of his entrees is immaculate. The ambiance of the place was nothing special, but if you want the best Japanese food in town, in Alaska, possibly in America, possibly in the world...go to Wasabi Bay. Hit it up if you're on this side of the equator. It's THAT GOOD. I'll be dreaming of the tender, smooth, melt-in-your mouth taste of their sashimi for a long time.

Like previous posts say, don't judge a book by its cover! The outside of the building is not very inviting but the inside is quite nice. The sushi, while I've had better, it could just be that I am somewhat of a sushi connoisseur and have eaten it at many other locations, this sushi what's definitely up to par! There is lots of variety to choose from and the taste was very fresh. I haven't tried any other places in Fairbanks but I would suggest if you want a safe bet to go here!

Fantastic sushi! I'm always amazed that not only is the sushi great but super fresh! Jay and his wife own the place and they're wonderful. Chef Don was recently brought on to give Jay a break and he brings a bit of Las Vegas flash to the rolls. The wasabi roll is my favorite - lots of fresh fish, seaweed, and minimal rice make it great. Hand rolls are amazing too. I go to sushi places when I travel for work and I'm always amazed how much I miss this place when I'm away. It's honestly the BEST sushi I've ever had. Go there NOW!

I moved from fairbanks and this is one thing i miss. I would order the tiger crunch roll and ask for a soy wrap instead of sea weed. Its the best. The bathroom is a must see it was painted lime green and just has to make you laugh when you walk in.

Good service, tasty bento boxes, unfortunately did not order many rolls, some were a bit pricey, so I truly cannot comment on the sushi, which is my favorite thing to eat for lunch or dinner.. I did order a las vegas roll, but it seem to be a bit skimpy on the fish,as it was suppose to be different one with cream cheese, I guess I should of looked over the menu better and order a better roll. It was tasty, but not overly impressed for the $ of the rolls...

Located in the former KFC building, Wasabi Bay is another delicious sushi addition to Fairbanks. The owners have done a great job in converting the space ... there is virtually no indication that the space was ever used in the fast food industry. The lighting is soft and the interior conveys a relaxed and pleasant mood. The service was very good. We received complimentary miso soup, which arrived hot but not scaldingly so. The rolls were delicious. Many of the rolls have interesting and often humorous names, such as the "Screaming Orgasm" roll. The calamari roll was fairly tasty but could have used more calamari. Although it was good, it was not outstanding. Another highlight was a complimentary sushi roll! =) The Las Vegas roll was my favorite ... shrimp and crab as well as vegetable. Overall, we were very pleased and satisfied with our meal. Although the traditional Japanese items are limited (however, there is Americanized Japanese food like teriyaki), the selection of sushi and rolls are fairly extensive, and very delicious.

Nothing to shout about...a friend and I went based on the fact that there were so many great reviews. I don't know what they were talking about - I've definitely been to better, but it's not horrible. Submarine roll has a good kick, but fairly small pieces. Pretty fresh and flavorful. Edamame was room temp - disappointing! It wasn't the best sushi I've had, but not the worst. Decent for Fairbanks.

We've eaten at a lot of sushi places and I've never not been able to eat something I've ordered until I came here. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon were too spicy to eat (I usually love these two rolls), and whatever my husband got wasn't that great, either. Nothing seemed very fresh. Service was friendly, though. You'll get better food at a few other places in town.

The best sushi in the WORLD! Always fresh always great. From traditional maki, rolls and specialty rolls it is all awesome. I eat here weekly. This is East meets West. Jay does traditional style sushi and Chef Don fresh from Las Vegas makes some awesome specialty rolls. They have teriyaki etc. for the non sushi lovers too. I don't hang out with those types but if you do they are set. Seriously, everywhere I go outside Fairbanks I find the best local sushi (so far Seattle, Austin, Honolulu, Kauai, Maui, Sacramento, San Diego) and none have lived up to Wasabi Bay.
