This is a good place to eat out food was ready it was kind of fast and good staff the price was a bit pricey and the place was clean even there a dog slad even a lot of stuff on the wall. There a lot of table and chair and there a menu of dessert cookie cost $1.00 and we pay for the food. First visit at 9/29/14.

Stopped in here because we were spending the night in Fairbanks. The owner is very outgoing and will gladly tell you the story of his family. In fact, I think he tells the story to the whole dining room every night. We heard all about Wise Mike and how he struck it rich mining for gold. We also learned that he was one of 13 kids in his family. While the stories were interesting and made for a memorable visit, he isn't too good at running a restaurant. They did not have the servers in sections. It seemed like they just picked up tables as the place filled up. We noticed our waiter taking food to a table in the back and then running up to the front of the restaurant to bring us a drink. The food is not that great. Our salads consisted of romaine lettuce that was badly bruised sitting in a wooden bowl with a puddle of water at the bottom of it along with grape tomatoes. My wife got the Dungeness crab sandwich. It was something they bought frozen and dropped in the fryer. My fish was ok. Overall, the beer was better than the food.

Convinently located behind Springhill Suites hotel, this place is awesome. We were there in the afternoon, probably around two o'clock. The place was quite busy, but there's only one person serving everyone in the room. He's very entertaining and served us well. They cooked our burger quite fast too and very delicious. I would go visit this place again next time I'm in Fairbanks.

Great Service, good food and one good experience: Alaskan Crab cake was delicious (a lil oily though) Salmon Sandwich was ok - salmon was a lil dry Fries are really good They have toys for Kids/babies - loved it!

Man, it's tough to do this, but I must. Service: 5+ stars Our waiter was funny, sweet, quirky, and charming. Super nice guy, packed with local knowledge and general concern. Ambiance: 4 stars Great, authentic, old-timey Alaska feel. Lots of old stuff on the walls to gawk at. Food: 1.5 stars Very plain, very pedestrian, and very expensive. Both of our meals tasted like they were frozen and then re-heated in a microwave. My ribs and my corn had "cold spots" in them. So did my dining partner's veggies. Very unimpressive (though not offensive) food that felt more TV dinner than dining out. Maybe we got the wrong things, but we were pretty puzzled by the Yelp reviews here. If the food were under 10 bucks it would be excusable, but for 20ish...it's unreal. Maybe folks were blinded by the exceptional service? By being on vacation in Alaska? I don't know. I probably won't be coming back though, unfortunately.

The server was so friendly. The environment was very welcoming. I ate alone because I was traveling for business but lots of the people inside were chatting to folks at other tables. I was invited to look around and there was a lot of meat artifacts and photos around. I enjoyed viewing the books while I dined. The food was tasty, though a bit expensive for what it is. I would definitely go back!

Had lunch here but could see the menu for many great dinner selections. Great atmosphere and service very busy spot. Our guide suggested this place and I'm so glad we chose it. Very memorable experience all around.

Server was very nice and obviously knew a lot about the area and background of items in the restaurant. However, the food was way to expensive for what you actually get. If I am leaving the restaurant paying upwards of $50, I expect real crab in the food, not fake crab (especially being in alaska). Overall, service was great, but could not make up for the lack of quality versus price in their food.

The head waiter here is amazing and if you meet the owner he loves to talk about the history of his family. There's so much to look at in the interior of the restaurant and I have really enjoyed all the food that I have gotten from soapys. I try to bring all my visiting friends and family here now.

Food was great. I got a Salmon sandwich which was served on very fresh bread and well-prepared fish. We also got a Halibut sandwich which was equally delicious. Afterwards we got a cherry pie and it was the highlight. Decor is gold-rush and Fairbanks memorabilia; but not at all the generic, pre-packaged, focus-group-approved, touristy junk you'd see at a claim-jumper, for example. Almost all of the other customers were locals and most of them were in one way or another, such as their ancestry, relations or political careers, featured in the decor. The server went out of his way to introduce us to the locals who where friendly and generous with their time and story and their connection to Soapy's walls. Service could not have been friendlier. Seriously, there is no way possible for the service to have been friendlier. Orders where taken quickly and efficiently, but still personalized. Food arrived quickly and well paced even though there was something of a mini-rush with five other tables all sitting at the same time as we arrived.

Nice local feel at Soapy's. Deco is very Alaskan, the owner is the grandson of an immigrant who settled in Alaska during the Gold rush. Artifacts everywhere about his story and his family. Very good range of Alaskan craft beer. Food menu looks alright - pub food type (I had a burger, it was ok) The waiter Bill is a great guy. Spent a lot of time chatting with him as the place was quiet when I was there.

Just so-so. It's got the feel of a Fisherman's Wharf tourist trap. I had the baked salmon sandwich with fries. The salmon was small and nothing to write home about. The fries were store bought frozen. The service was great. The meal (including two beers), was around $23, excluding tip.

I asked a few locals where to eat while in town. They stated they don't eat in town lol however they said our best bet was Soapy's. It's a cute restaurant but the best part was our waiter Bill. He was a fast talking, fast moving guy with a great sense of humor. Potato salad is great. Clam chowder is very good. One person had the tuna melt which was just like you would make at home. Pretty standard food, don't expect it to be the best you've ever had though. With the limited options here go for this one while you're in downtown Fairbanks and if you get the chance have Bill as your waiter.

I ate dinner at Soapy Smith's Pioneer Restaurant in Fairbanks, AK on 8/11/2014. I actually had the most expensive dinner on the menu, the halibut at market price. It was $37.95 that day and was from Valdez, AK. The Salmon dinner was quite a bit less at $24.95 but I'm getting a little tired of salmon. The jalapeño poppers were $8.95. My server did a good job. The place has a rustic (a la 1890's) decor as is appropriate for a place name after the infamous Soapy Smith. Sadly, my camera was no longer working.

Great service, convenient and the best salmon ever had, of course it's Alaska but hey sometimes can and do screw it up still but not here

I saw this restaurant from my window at the Spring Hill Suites (it is located directly behind the hotel), and got all excited because I was hungry, the onsite restaurant was not scheduled to open until 4pm and I did not want to walk far for lunch. I found out they were closed on Sundays, which drove me cray-cray! The sign on the door said they had a great crabcake sandwich, so I decided to go back the next day. The crabcake sandwich was good, but not nearly all it was hyped up to be. There are other places in Alaska that serve better King crab cakes. The honey-battered fried chicken was good too; the portion was small, which I didn't mind because I really should be eating small portions of fried food. The small size of the chicken was also a heartening reassurance (or at least I took it to be so) that it had not been treated with steriods or growth hormones! The service is friendly and attentive. Will I be back? Hmmm... well, I have been back a couple of times and probably will be back again, just because of the convenient location in relation to the hotel I normally stay at, and I really had no complaints about the food or service; all good but not outstanding (I don't always need outstanding food every single time I am hungry; simply good food will work just fine every now and again).

Waiter was snarky, trying to be funny but it fell flat. Food was overpriced and not very good. They stress the made from scratch, but I think they just scratch it out of a box or bag. Veggies were mushy and watery, probably frozen a little too long. French fries were hard, cod was soft and I've had better fish sticks from Gorton;s. Bad night? or just bad food.
(1)Michael T.
One star for the very friendly service. Great place to visit if you are looking for genuinely kind service. The food receives 0 stars. Ordered the cheesesteak sandwich & it was not good at all. Very overpriced for a small, poor quality sandwich. Very little substance to the sandwich, steak was tough & chewy, very few onions or peppers. It really was not a cheesesteak. Just a few strips of chewy, tough semi-thin cut steak pieces on a dry roll.

Alaskan king crab burger... If you like crab cakes and the McFish, then you will enjoy this. The tartar sauce is home made and delicious. Tip: ask for the Dijon mustard, put mustard on one side of the bun, mustard on the other. Only complaint is the crab could be in larger chunks. It's sort of finely diced into a breaded patty which in My opinion almost defeats the purpose of using king crab no? Potato salad made with egg, mustard, relish, and red potatoes was pretty darn good.

Bumped into this place on vacation. Loved it . Good food and wonderful service . Good price point. Check them out when you are in Fairbanks.
(5)Don P.
Fun and lively atmosphere with good selection of Alaska cuisine. Walls lined with frontier Alaska memorabilia.

We enjoyed a great baked salmon dinner and crab sandwich. Both great. Friendly service. Fantastic homemade strawberry rhubarb pie. Highly recommended!

Stopped here in Fairbanks because it was nearby where we had to meet our bus and while it looked touristy, supposedly they had a good crab cake burger so we went in. The service was HORRIBLE. It took forever for the waitress to even know we were there. The couple sitting next to us was also on our tour and in a hurry but everything - from drinks to food to check - took forever with this lady. The waitress also never brought us any water. This would have been nice considering the rate we had to scarf down our food because it took so long to come out. The crab cake burger was dry and had no flavor. Whoever says this is a good crab cake obviously doesn't eat many crab cakes. If you're in Fairbanks, don't bother with Soapy Smith's. It's a tourist trap with bad food and bad service.

Contrary to what others said: Excellent service and delicious food! We had a fresh salmon from the Copper river, a crab burger and a rhubarb pie ("a la mode"). Prices were very reasonable and our server Bill was adorable. The decor is really nice, the ambiance too :) At the end of the day this was our best lunch option during our stay in Fairbanks. Tip: try their local beer Coldfoot Pilsner

We had lunch here yesterday, and the meal was wonderful! I had a wonderfully seasoned salmon burger and a side salad with Italian dressing. The side salad was just okay, but the salmon burger--probably one of the best I've had in my life! The service was more than entertaining, especially when our charismatic waiter brought a third spoon for our brownie pie (al a mode) to make sure our six month old got a sample of the dessert. We gave our baby her first taste of any dessert here. What a treat. We'll go back to sample other items from the menu very soon.

The owner was a trip. The storys are better then the Food. I would come back again.

Very disappointed. Vegetables boiled/steamed till color gone. Baked cod gone cool when it reached the table. Fries not hand cut. However, prime rib was tender and horseradish was killer. Maybe Monday is not the best night?
(2)Erica M.
Loved this place. Greeted by the owner who was very outgoing, as soon as we walked in to this cute quaint restaurant. The walls are covered with old vintage photos of history of the town and the generations of those who lived there, books to read and browse while you wait for your meal, our server was very sweet and friendly and called me "baby" heeey! hah the food was great and its on a cute street to walk around and look at shops.

Great food and great service! Love the atmosphere. One of our favorite places to eat lunch!

Happened to drop by here while in Fairbanks. What a wonderful HOT meal! Our server was excellent, too!

I can't wait to go back! We stopped in for dessert and coffee. All desserts are made from scratch. The strawberry rhubarb pie ala mode was perfect. Sweet, tangy, and a flaky crust. I haven't tasted crust that good for years. During the summer, Fairbanks thankfully gets bus loads of visitors. This restaurant had just got done with the last of many "rushes" of the day. The wait staff was tired, but still smiling, good quick service. All of a sudden, "boom"! The kitchen door fell off the hinge, hit the waiter, who yelled "I told you this would happen!", @!#!, followed by a moment of total silence from the dining room. Life resumed when the waiter returned momentarily and continued to serve customers! I haven't seen anything like that since I was a kid.

Quaint local establishment with a lot of charm DT Fairbanks. I had the Baked Salmon Sandwich with potato salad and it was wonderful. I would recommend it if you are up in this neck of the woods!
(4)Danae M.
Great food many items home made but what made us return again was the service. We told Bill we would be back and he had our table waiting. There was a bit of a lunch rush when we were there but Bill tended to all ten tables and not one of them was wanting or waiting for anything and we were a party of 10! Way to go Bill.
(5)Jose F.
Great place, the walls are full of Alaska history, The food is delicious ( fried chicken, a must!) great beers and AMAZING service by Bill. Bill , thanks for an awesome service!!!
(5)Matthew W.
Food was pretty decent. my favorite thing about this restaurant was the enthusiasm and charisma of one of the waiters. that guy was a riot. Would definitely come back.
(5)J Z.
Over-hyped. The wait staff was friendly, but the food left a lot to be desired. We ordered a burger and fries and the raviolis, all of which had been previously frozen. Other restaurants in town serve the same type of food but of better quality.
(2)Linh N.
The interior design is very busy but unique. Keeps you interested while you wait. If you're a fan of crab cakes, the king crab burger is a good choice but ask them to go easy on the sauce. The fried cod was good as well although very greasy. One must dab the fillet with a napkin to absorb the excess oil. Fries were your normal everyday fries. Our waitress was very nice and provided good service.

Clean restaurant. Greeted at the door. Quick friendly service. Menu prices are high so get ready to open your wallet.
(3)Cyril K.
The waiter was great and funny. The place was clean and service was very good. My friend had the crab burger and thought it was really good. We both thought the potato salad was among the best we ever had. The patty melt was slightly better than average. The iced tea was actually as dark as the root beer and you could actually taste the tea! Prices were reasonable and lots of old memorabilia to entertain you while waiting. Truly worth going here!
(5)Rey T.
Ordered clam chowder, different but ok. Limited choices downtown. About 10 patrons, waiter is chatty.
(3)Willy S.
Food is good. But the best catch in Alaska is the waitress from NY.
(4)Allan N.
Great atmosphere... great staff... makes you feel at home... menu mediocre... will come back though to be proven wrong i hope.
(3)Junglist S.
Tasty clam chowder. Crab cake burger was decent. Lively atmosphere with a very friendly owner, we had a good time.

We had high hopes when we entered. The waiter was a hoot and provided great entertainment. It was almost worth going there just to joke around with him... but not quite. The fries are advertised as "best of..." ... not even close... more like frozen crinkled potatoes baked in the oven. The Caesar salad had too way much garlic & was overdressed... accompanying grilled chicken was dry and sparse. The salmon was too dry and taste was a bit off. The rueben & crab cakes were just OK, nothing special. The prices were probably in line for Fairbanks. Wouldn't recommend it unless you just want a drink and entertainment...
(1)Mike H.
It's an old diner. The food isn't bad and the service was fairly quick and pleasant. Prices were typically high. Expect from $9-13 for hot sandwiches to $18-25 for entrees.
